Fakenham RA CECOURS E

WELCOME

All of us at Fakenham are delighted to welcome you to today’s Paddy Power Race Day, the first race meeting of the new season. We are especially grateful to Paddy Power for their generous sponsorship of today’s race meeting and five races and to Anglia Car Auctions for their race sponsorship.

A lot of building work has been going on at Fakenham over the summer and as you can see the New Long Bar is not yet finished. Please bear with the temporary marquee bar for the next couple of race meetings. We hope to have the new bar up and running for the December race meeting. We have also upgraded the jockeys’ changing rooms, weighing room and increased the size of the Owners’ and Trainers’ Cool Roxy Bar For those of you with eagle eyes you will note that all the chase fences and hurdles have been changed from orange tops and bottoms to white and the hurdles are now made of foam pads and not birch. These are very positive changes that should benefit the welfare of the horses.

We have recently started Fakenham Race Club which has two horses in training both of which are running today There is still availability for membership. To find out more about this exciting and fun initiative please look at the advertisement in this race card or go and see Zoe who has an information stand in the foyer of The Prince of Wales Stand.

Finally, we are hugely honoured and proud that this is the first Fakenham race meeting with His Majesty The King as our Patron Long Live The King.

Best Wishes, David Hunter Chief Executive

Fakenham RA CECOURS E WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Sunday 22nd May

The final raceday of the season saw the Jarrold Handicap Chase steal the show after an excellent performance from Al Roc.

The opener of the day was a Female Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle where Gillian Boanas’ Guidedbythescience ran out an easy winner. Jockey Miss Becky Smith gave a convincing performance, holding her mare near the rear before storming clear of her rivals approaching the last hurdle. Olympic Honour was no match for the winner in second.

The next race was a touch closer with the 2/1 second favourite, Arbennig clutching the win in a hard-fought contest. Jamie Snowden’s gelding made a mistake on the 6th but stayed on well under late pressure from the second placed Getaway Jewel, while the favourite on the day, Ar Mest found nothing late on and was unable to contest the finish. It was a good performance from Arbenning who had flattered to deceive previously at Fontwell.

Jubilee Gold broke his maiden in the third race under Charlie Hammond for trainer Dr Richard Newland, beating his co-favourite on the day, Pure Bubbles late on.

They were neck and neck going into the home turn, but a superb jump from Jubilee Gold on the last made all the difference and he was able to pull 2 lengths clear. Sweet Moon ran in third and would have been disappointed not to do better after a spirited showing at Newton Abbot a couple of weeks before.

The shock of the day came in the fourth, where Miami Present picked up the surprise victory.

DON’T MISS OUR NEXT MEETING

Harriet Bethell’s veteran gelding had floundered previously when pulled up at Hexham but looked considerably better here. The improvement in form was credited to a combination of the quicker surface, reapplication of blinkers and having his second run since a wind operation. Fellow veteran Orchestrated certainly didn’t disgrace himself in second, comfortably dispatching the favourite Dubai Guest in third, but despite keeping on well was unable to challenge the victor

Fine By Her finally notched her first victory after two years of trying in the fifth race of the day. She wasn’t too fancied in the betting, going off at 11/2 but an intelligent ride from jockey Harry Bannister saw her go clear over the last before keeping on strongly to secure the win. Post No Bills was running on well before a trio of mistakes over the final three hurdles cost the gelding and he was only able to get second with the Neil Mulholland trained Milanese Rose rounding out the places in third.

The penultimate race of the day saw an excellent performance from David Pipe’s Al Roc, who made it two wins on the bounce. He was hampered three out but was soon able to push clear and rode out a comfortable winner ahead of the favourite Percussion in second. It looked to be a smart ride from Adam Wedge on board Percussion, but he was outpaced late on.

The finale of the day was a threerunner handicap and there was a surprise of sorts here too as Fergal O’Brien’s 8/13 favourite Oslo was well beaten. Glimpse Of Gold led most of the way and went clear after a fantastic jump over the last, keeping on well as Oslo weakened. Grand Revival was unable to keep up with the others after making a mistake 2 out, but still managed to finish. The win here was Glimpse Of Gold’s second in a row at this course and he went on to score again at Stratford the next month. Oslo also got back to winning ways at Worcester next time out.

horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race.

Good chance of being placed.

no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating.

ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed.

Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
