WELCOME & OFFICIALS

Fakenham RACECOURSE

WELCOME All of us at Fakenham are delighted we are able to welcome you to today’s race meeting, despite the testing times we currently live in. It has been great to have racegoers back since October – long may it last. None of us can afford to be complacent about the challenges of Covid, so please comply with the national policy and guidelines. Respect people’s personal space; wash your hands frequently and thoroughly; wear a face covering if you wish – and have FUN. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone caught up in the dreadful war in Ukraine. Lets hope that peace comes soon and to all racegoers I ask you to help the people of Ukraine in whatever way you can. Finally, I would like to thank The Country Food Trust for their support of today’s race meeting. They provide a truly valuable service in getting high protein, nutritious game food to those who most deserve it – the homeless and recipients of food bank produce. Please visit their information stand here at today’s race meeting to find out more about the work they do and how you can help. I also want to thank today’s generous race sponsors, The Case Family and Hellesdon Leather & Cloth Furniture Company. LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Wednesday 9th February 2022

It was an excellent day for Cillin Leonard and Dr Richard Newland. The pair teamed up with an excellent double last Friday in our first and fourth race.

Our six-race card kicked off with the Brisley Primary Academy Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Young claimer Cillin Leonard fired in his first of the day aboard Thirtyfourstitches. A simple ride, he aimed to make all and didn’t see a rival until making a bad mistake three out. Sainte Doctor looked to be travelling all over the winner for Richie Mclernon but didn’t find much when asked the question and Thirtyfourstitches would have been thankful for the short run in. Radetzky March was a quite emphatic winner of our next race and unlike our second in the first, found plenty for pressure. Vinnie’s Getaway and Mister Robbo had been battling it out a long way from home and clearly felt the effects of that early duel. They were sitting ducks for the eventual winner Radetzsky March, who was subject to an excellent ride by jockey David Noonan. The punters went to collect their winning feeling smug as the short priced favourite Swinging London became the first favourite to win on

the card. It wasn’t the strongest of maiden hurdles and Swinging London clearly has some class about him to win with such ease despite being keen in the early stages. Making his British debut for Olly Murphy, Aidan Coleman knew he had a classy animal underneath him and they clearly think he could be good, as he has a triumph entry. He might not be good enough for that, but another good run could see him appear in the Boodles. Rostello was held up in the two-mile handicap chase by Cillin Leonard, who

DON’T M IS S O U R N E X T M E ETI NG

MONDAY 18TH APRIL SEE YOU THERE!

was in search of his second winner on the day. He was clearly suited by the strong gallop set by Court Judo, who ran the race out of all but the eventual winner and you could see Rostello stepping up in trip on his next start. The 2016 Champion bumper winner Ballyandy came here on a bit of a redemption mission and despite it only being a Class three event, it was a competitive four runner field. There was an abundance of Cheltenham form between Ballyandy and Kansas City Chief and the two have a combined age of 24, which is rather impressive! Kansas City Chief exhibited his usual front running tactics but like our previous two races, in front was not the place to be. He quickly surrendered the lead to

Ballyandy two fences from home and under 10lb claimer Finn Lambert, he could be called the winner a long way from home. Our final race of the day was the Mares’ Handicap Hurdle, run over three miles. It was by far our most exciting finish of the day and three horses had every chance jumping the last. Lily Glitters came flying home from the back of the field and despite being four lengths down jumping the last, she was only beaten a neck. River Tyne had been involved in a battle with Midnight Mary and although she tried to rally late, the winning post came right on cue for Midnight Mary and Ciaran Gethings.

LEADING FAKENHAM JOCKEY (2021-22): Bryony Frost (5 wins)

BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

VAUBAN won the Spring Juvenile in impressive fashion on just his second start over hurdles, and that looks the best piece of form in the division on either side of the Irish Sea, so he’s fancied to prove too strong with further improvement on the cards. The Elliott-trained pair Pied Piper and Fil Dor are fancied to follow him home in that order, while Doctor Parnassus makes appeal at bigger odds.

Unsurprisingly, claims can be made for a host, including Nigel Twiston Davies’ I LIKE TO MOVE IT. Already a 3-time winner over hurdles, he improved again and shaped really well when second in the Befair Hurdle latest, going down by a short head. This stiffer test will suit and he earns the vote. Irish raiders Top Bandit and State Man are next best, ahead of West Cork and Surprise Package.

GINTO made light of the further step up in grade when completing the hat-trick in a Grade 1 at Naas in January, maintaining his unbeaten record over hurdles in the process. There’s a good chance that this longer trip will bring out further improvement, so he makes plenty of appeal. Hillcrest and Minella Cocooner are both highly progressive so rate the main threats.

BOB AND CO was still going well when unseating 3 out in this last year and he went on to make amends when edging out Billaway in the Champion Hunters at Punchestown in April. Paul Nicholls charge made a respectable return when second in a steadilyrun race at Haydock and shades the vote over Billaway, who’s been second in the last 2 renewals. The up-and-coming Winged Leader is another to consider.

FAKENHAM

D UBLE P BONUS RACE

This race forms part of the Fakenham Double Up Bonus. Full details to be found at www.fakenhamracecourse.co.uk/racing/owners-trainers/ If the winning horses in races 3 and 6 are trained by the same trainer, the winning owner of each race will get an extra £2000 added to their prize money. There must be at least eight horses that go to post in each of the two races for the bonus to be paid.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

PLAY SMARTER

ELIMAY had to settle for second behind a very classy stablemate in the inaugural running of this but can go one better now. Mount Ida beat the selection at Fairyhouse in January but there is a worry she’ll jump out to her right back on a left-handed track. She got away with it in the Kim Muir last year but may not do so against an opponent of Elimay’s calibre. Concertista is best of the rest.

PLAY SMARTER

ADAMANTLY CHOSEN is highly progressive and goes through his races like one who will be suited by the nature of this event, so he gets the nod in front of Chemical Energy, who fits a similar mould. Needless to say, there’s a whole host of other interesting contenders from Ireland, while Langer Dan (second in last year’s renewal) looks the pick of the British contingent.
