BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A sunny afternoon greeted racegoers on Friday 15th October as the course staged a six-race card, producing a couple of notable novice performances, some impressive winning distances, and a very dramatic ﬁnish to the feature.

The big race on the card was the Download The At The Races App Handicap Chase, which saw four closely matched rivals head to post for the 3m Class 3 contest. The race began to unfold in earnest following the departure of long-time leader Canyon City after the eight-year-old unshipped partner Jack Quinlan with a circuit left to run. Shortly after, the topweight Rocky’s Treasure began to fade as Minella Encore and Larry looked set to battle out the ﬁnish. Rounding the home bend, Sam Twiston-Davies vitally held a one-length advantage aboard the Dr Richard Newland-trained Minella Encore as Larry and his partner Jamie Moore stalked the leader in behind. And although what unfolded next would have surprised Twiston-Davies out in front, he did at least see it coming, as the riderless Canyon City inadvertently greeted the two protagonists at the beginning of the home straight, badly hampering the leader and completely wiping out the unfortunate Larry-Moore partnership in the process. Despite losing his irons, Twiston-Davies successfully negotiated the ﬁnal obstacle to give himself a 29th birthday present he certainly won’t forget in a hurry. The other Class 3 on the card also took place over the 3m chase course in the shape of the Breeders’ Cup On Sky Sports Racing Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

The mare Go Millie Go had attracted plenty of market support before the off but parted company with partner Ciaran Gethings two out, leaving the seven-year-old grey Eaglehill to confirm his superiority for jockey Aidan Coleman and trainer Olly Murphy by beating the game Lord Schnapps by eight lengths. That win secured a double for Coleman and Murphy after the pair had earlier teamed up to land the opening 2m4f Maiden Hurdle with the impressive Italian Spirit. The five-year-old had previously won a Market Rasen bumper and followed that effort up with an encouraging debut over hurdles at Newbury in March, finishing off his race in eye-catching fashion that day.

The market certainly agreed as the Fame And Glory gelding was eventually sent off an 8/13 shot to get the job done and duly obliged, going clear approaching the last to beat the Evan Williams-trained Loved Out by 11 lengths. The Welsh trainer didn’t have to wait long to turn the tables, however, as the wellsupported Howdyalikemenow dug deep under Adam Wedge to rally back and beat Olly Murphy’s four-year-old ﬁlly Auditoria in the Hollie Doyle’s Blog on attheraces. com Novices’ Hurdle. Defying a winners’ penalty and giving just over a stone to his main market rival in the process, the winner appears to be relishing life at his new yard and could be one to follow over the coming months. Replays On attheraces.com Novices’ Handicap Hurdle. Sent off at much bigger odds before landing an 11-runner handicap at Fontwell a fortnight ago, the six-year-old proved that effort was no ﬂuke in beating the odds-on favourite Midnight Jewel by a little over six lengths at the line. Not to be outdone, arguably the most impressive performance of the day came in the ﬁnal Class 4 Handicap Hurdle contest over the same trip, where Neil King and Daryl Jacob teamed up to great effect with The Knot Is Tied. Coming into this contest having won just one of his 16 races over hurdles previously, there would have been few who would have predicted the 24-length demolition job that followed. A respectable third-placed effort at Aintree over slightly further and off a 10lb higher mark soon followed, and connections will be hoping there’s still plenty more to come from their improving six-year-old.

VISITORS AGREE TO: • Submit to a search of their persons, bags and vehicles; • Comply at all times with the instructions of the officers and management of the Company, the officers and stewards of the British Horseracing Authority, security staff and police. • Observe the racecourse rules of betting: only visitors carrying valid betting badges and occupying an authorised pitch may offer or lay bets. • Observe the rules and terms and conditions governing other commercial activities on the racecourse: only authorised vendors are permitted to trade. • Abide by the racecourse dress code which is as follows: smart casual attire for hospitality guests (e.g. no trainers) and for others to dress respectfully (e.g. no bare chests). The management of the racecourse reserve the right to refuse entry to any person it regards, at its sole discretion, is in breach of the dress code. THE FOLLOWING ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED: • Drunken and abusive behaviour, foul language or the possession of illegal substances; • The display of any signage or branding and the distribution of any promotional or advertising material; • Obstruction of any of the racecourse’s gangways, stairways, entrances and exits and unauthorised climbing on any structure within the racecourse; • Access to unauthorised areas of the racecourse; • Bringing on to the racecourse any of the following: - Any items of food or drink including picnics. The exception is that these items can be consumed in the car parks, but not in the enclosures; - Any flags, banners or other such articles which may distract visitors or the horses; - Tents or gazebos without prior consent of Fakenham Racecourse. - Any dangerous chemicals or substances hazardous to health or machinery; - Ball games i.e. football or rugby; LIMITATION OF LIABILITY To the maximum extent permissible by law the Company shall not, nor shall any of its officers, managers or staff, in any circumstances, be liable for any loss, damage, cost or expense or any consequential or indirect loss or damage of any kind suffered by visitors to the racecourse, including but not limited to any loss or damage to personal items and vehicles belonging to visitors while on or about the racecourse. This does not affect our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence; nor any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
