WELCOME All of us at Fakenham racecourse are over joyed to welcome back our loyal racegoers, new racegoers, friends, supporters, sponsors and annual members to today’s race meeting after such a long spell of disruption and uncertainty. It has been a challenging time for everyone over the past 18 months but none of us can afford to be complacent as restrictions ease and life returns to normality. So please continue to follow the guidelines of protocol for reducing the spread of Covid 19 – respect people’s personal space; wash you hands frequently and thoroughly; wear a mask when inside (except when eating or drinking); wear a mask outside if you wish – and have FUN. I would like to thank today’s sponsors Sky Sports Racing and all of our dedicated casual staff who’s help and support is vital to the smooth running of today’s race meeting. I wish you all an enjoyable and successful day and have a safe journey home. BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

LAST TIME AT FAKENHAM

Fakenham RACECOURSE

Sunday 23rd May 2021

Our last meeting took place on 23rd May and boy was it an action packed day. Six races on perfect summer ground it threw up some brilliant racing and some suprising results!

Our last meeting was sponsored by Jarrold’s raceday and boy was it an action packed day. Seven races on good to soft ground it threw up some brilliant racing! The day kicked off with a Novices Handicap Hurdle. Run over two miles and seven furlongs, Tommie Beau set a steady gallop under Micheal Nolan. He tracked the leader strongly throughout before making a strong challenge after the tenth fence. He stayed on strongly to win by a length-and-a-half from Kielan Woods aboard Say Nothing, who had led throughout but was no match for the winner in the home turn. Race two saw a longer victory enjoyed by Bryony Frost aboard Top Beak. The pair led after the second fence and finished a comfortable four-and-a-half lengths in front of Tabitha Worsley and Mawlood. The favourite, Neil Mulholland’s Dynamic Kate, was held up behind the leaders in the opening stages and never really made progress; she finished fourth after dropping over twelve lengths behind the winner when quickly losing steam two flights from home. The Prince of Wales Cup saw a very interesting contest with ten runners going to post. 7/2 Favourite Barden Bella finished a disappointing ninth out of the field after becoming tailed off four from home. However, the race was still in favour of Christian Williams’ other horse Joey Steel and Nick Williams. The pair finished three and-a-quarter lengths in

front of Etat Major Aulmes and Gavin Sheehan, despite being held up during the opening stages of the race. He led after the last and was soon clear; a very comfortable victory for the two of them. The fourth race of the afternoon saw short-priced Storm Rising, trained by Dr. Richard Newland, come out on top of four runners. It was a very comfortable victory for him, and he outjumped The Three Wizards following the first fence where the horse was prominent. An awkward jump at the last sealed his fate, and Storm Rising ran on by six lengths to win in an impressive style. It was the turn of Adam Wedge aboard Thomas Todd in the fifth race of the meeting. The pair travelled strongly and

consistently throughout and were niggled on by a length wo win the Handicap from Diligent and David Noonan. Diligent appeared prominent during the start of the race and was niggled along three from home, but Thomas Todd stayed on despite a mistake at the last to take his second victory of the season. Paddy Brennan and Castel Gandolfo secured their first win of the season in the sixth race, after leading three from the finish and clearing off up the home turn. The pair denied Dr RIchard Newland of his second victory of the meeting with Dynamite Kentucky, who was ridden out

two from home but proved no match for the winner. David Bass and Ed de Giles claimed victory in the final race of the afternoon with 7/1 shot Roar, by a comfortable four lengths from Phoenix Dawn- another from Dr Richard Newland’s stable. It was the horse’s first win since October 2020 and kept on strongly under the hands of David Bass. The favourite, Begin The Luck, finished a distant third behind Roar; he seemed to keep on but did not have the pace to challenge the winner.

Tongue Strap worn by No. 6. Visor, Tongue Strap worn by No. 5. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 3.

Stewards Note: MALIBOO: Following its run on 17/5/2021 it was reported that the horse stopped quickly. BALKARDY: Following its run on 10/5/2021 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.

Probable S.P’s: 11-8 Midnight Jewel (GB), 11-4 Jumping Cats (GB), 9-2 Maliboo (IRE), 12-1 Balkardy (FR), 20-1 Tigray (USA), 66-1 Wendreda (GB)

MIDNIGHT JEWEL is on a roll and had a fair bit up his sleeve when scoring at Huntingdon recently, so he’s an obvious choice to go in again under a penalty. The reappearing Maliboo is a PLAY SMARTER danger if back on the up, while Jumping Cats could pose a threat if in the same form as when successful at Fontwell a fortnight ago. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.MIDNIGHT JEWEL 2.MALIBOO (IRE) 3.JUMPING CATS

It’s easier to make cases against, rather than for, each member of the quartet. That said, LARRY proved that he retains a good deal of ability when mid-field in a valuable end-of-season Sandown handicap chase in April, on what was just his second run following a lengthy absence.
