Fact Book
Weatherbys GSB
Fact Book 2023 Executive Summary There are more than 80 countries worldwide that breed Thoroughbreds and even more that conduct Thoroughbred horseracing. The combined
British
and
Irish
Thoroughbred breeding industries rank second in the world on total foal crop, only behind the United States. Taking the British and Irish Thoroughbred industry and all its components, breeding remains one of its strongest stimulators of economic impact. It is the ‘supply chain’ to the racing industry. This is particularly so of the breeding industry in Ireland from which more than 60% of its foal crop each year are sold across the Irish Sea to supply the British racing industry. The two markets remain global leaders in bloodstock sales, with sales per capita outperforming many other leading breeding and racing territories. It is estimated that more than £2bn was generated by public and private sales, and nomination and boarding fees across the two jurisdictions. This latest edition of the annual Weatherbys Fact Book, provides a summary of breeding statistics for foals, mares and stallions, including imports and exports, age profiles, gestation ranges, breeders by county, foal colours and other information covering the British and Irish breeding sectors in 2023. Gestation Range (Days) Broodmares can vary greatly in the length of time they carry their foal. This graph reflects the spread of the gestation dates of British domiciled broodmares based on reported 2022 coverings for 2023 foals. From the standard 11 month (330-350 days) gestation period, Thoroughbred mares carried successfully for a range of between 10 to over 13 months.
