BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

ALCEDO left his reappearance effort well behind when making his second chase start a winning one at Ffos Las 15 days ago, knuckling down well to edge ahead in the dying strides. Looking the type to progress further and still unexposed at this sort of trip, he looks to hold sound claims again from this 4lb higher mark. C&D winner Stans The Man did well returned to this sphere late last year and he, along with chase debutant Largy Poet, can provide chief resistance.

PLAY SMARTER

Nick Ansell

After leaving the Army as a Major General, Nick Ansell was clerk of the course at Exeter from 1995 to 2002 and then a director during the period when the ownership of the racecourse changed from Haldon Steeplechase Co to Jockey Club Racecourses.

Throughout his life, racing was ed to winner and ughout e, cing s Nick Ansell’s big passion. Aged ck s 17, he had both his first point 17 point ride and his first t fi t for the renowned Devonian r wned nian Olympic horseman, Bertie Hill. ympic horseman, Bertie Hill.

Over 21 years from that first ride, he rode in 266 races, with 45 winners and 40 falls, breaking his collar bone 4 times. His greatest achievement was owning, training and riding Threepwood (above) to win the Grand Military Gold Cup in 1964 – shortly after he had been at Cheltenham with his wife Viv to witness the great Arkle beat Mill House the day before their second son was born – and hence christened Julian Threepwood Ansell.

He was in his element as clerk ofthe course, as it took him back into the racing world that he had had to leave during the latter half of his military career He was at his happiest on race days, totally absorbed bythe action and the joy oftalking to trainers and jockeys in the weighing room or the paddock.

He took great pleasure in designing races to attract the best horses – on his watch, three times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate won his first steeplechase at Exeter and returned regularly while he was clerk, something that gave him enormous pleasure.
