We even have ex-racehorse ‘Vieux Lion Rouge’ joining us for you to come and say hello to!

And of course ... thrilling jump racing!

Please note, in light of the recent weather, we have made the decision to cancel the children’s races on the track due to the risk of participants getting muddy and ruining their fancy dress costumes!

VIEUX LION ROUGE

Come and say hello to Vieux Lion Rouge in the stable outside the office! Vieux Lion Rouge retired from racing in January 2022 a few days after his thirteenth birthday. HehasbeenatremendoushorseforthePondHouseteamandthe‘horseofa lifetime’ for owners Professor Caroline Tisdall and John Gent. During his 41 racecareer he won thirteen times, including two Becher Chases over Aintree’s Grand National fences and a Grand National Trial at Haydock and amassed over £344,000 in prize money.

Of Vieux Lion Rouge, ProfessorTisdall said, “He has been amazing for us, the horse of a lifetime. He has given us so many memorable moments and the fact that he was able to remain sound and happy for ten years of racing is testament not just to his toughness, but to the care and attention given to him by the trainer and the whole team at Pond House”

Vieux Lion Rouge became something of an Aintree legend, contesting five Grand Nationals and six Becher Chases over the famous fences, setting a modern dayrecord byjumping 242 consecutivelywithout issue. He jumped 254 ofthe fences in total and aside from his two Becher wins, he finished runner-up on another occasion, whilst his best National finish came in 2017when an honourable sixth behind One For Arthur

Purchased as an unraced horse from the Arqana Sales in France in 2012, he spent his entire racing career at Pond House and retires safe and sound. He was one of Caroline’s first purchases, along with fellow teenager, Dell’ Arca.

Since he has retired he spent a bit of time hunting on Exmoor before coming back to Pond House where he is still ridden out daily by Julie Bellamy who has looked after him for nearly all his career He is a cheeky character full of life and is a horse who makes you smile every morning. He will do anything for a carrot!

PLAY SMARTER

This is really tricky without the benefit for market clues but GO JOHNNY GO arrives with a solid record in point bumpers and takes marginal preference over Prophesa, who was also successful on his last start in that sphere. Pyleigh Master is also of interest but it’s an open race

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Exeter Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in

the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
