Virgin Bet Race Previews

1.50pm- Impose Toi set the standard here in this 2-mile maiden hurdle. The French recruit for Nicky Henderson was a close second last time out to Egbert and is expected to go one place better here today.

Knowwhentoholdem is an interesting alternative in this race for Milton Harris. The 8 year-old has not been seen on course since November 2021 but may be worth a market check after a 466 day absence.

2.25pm- Caspers Court looks the most solid horse in the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle ran over 2 miles 5 furlongs. He holds some good course form at Exeter and was a nice winner last time out at Wincanton. Ben Godfrey will take 3lbs off again today and the selection looks the most reliable on current form. Dark Duomo may be worth a market check on handicap debut for Philip Hobbs, getting the first time tongue tie and cheek pieces applied.

3.00pm- Sabrina (NAP) should be suited to this track. She was an impressive winner in her maiden hurdle race here and steps down today from class 2 to class 3 company. She looks the big danger here. American Sniper might be worth having another go with. He came very close to winning last time out at Newton Abbot off today’s same mark of 127 and today’s ground should also suit. Judicial Law is interesting now stepping back up to a longer trip. He probably found the 2 miles a bit on the sharp side last time out and seems to be more suited to a stamina test.

3.35pm- Red Dirt Road ran a good race over Christmas on heavy ground at Leicester. The better spring ground however may be more to his liking and is tipped today on handicap debut for the Jonjo O’Neill team. Shallow River disappointed last time out when going off 5/4 favourite in a Southwell handicap but was eye-catching in his Wincanton run on New Years Day before that poor run. He may be worth giving another chance after a 40 day break for Fergal O’Brien.

4.10pm- Top Weight Langley Hundred was pulled up in his last run but today’s better ground should suit the Philip Hobbs 6-year-old better Seymour Promise has been hitting the crossbar recently and remains a big danger in this race, still running off a mark of 94. Blue Shark is going for his 6th win on the bounce for Jonjo O’Neill. A mark of 105 sees him go in the weights and it’s possible the handicapper has caught up with him now

4.40pm- A tricky handicap to figure out. Flamenco De Kerser may be worth a market check having his first run back since having a wind-op Port Or Starboard may be returning to form after a good performance last time out at Taunton. Preference in this race however is for Gorcombe Moonshine who has shown previous signs of potential on better ground in December at Fontwell and a mark of 75 might see him go close today.

An excellent opportunity for dual-bumper winner IMPOSE TOI, who shaped well on his first try over hurdles when runner-up at Ludlow in January Roccovango is better judged on his Haydock third having made a bad mistake 3 out at Southwell last time and is preferred to the returning Knowwhentoholdem for forecast purposes.

Probable S.P’s: 3-1 American Sniper (IRE), 4-1 Hititi (FR), 9-2 Sabrina (IRE), 11-2 Iberio (GER), 7-1 Gladiateur Allen (FR), 17-2 Judicial Law (IRE), 28-1 Brazos (USA)

PLAY SMARTER

Strong cases can be made for the majority of these Preference is for AMERICAN SNIPER, who is officially 2lb ‘well-in’ on the back of a solid effort in a novice event at Newbury last week where he pulled miles clear of the rest with the useful winner, Twig. Judicial Law will be a threat if fully tuned-up following a break but the consistent Hititi, who proved that this trip is within his range when going close at Wincanton, is feared most. Gladiateur Allen is also accorded respect.

DECLARED RUNNERS 16

2022: IMPERIAL JOE (IRE) 6 10 7 Sean Houlihan 2-1 (Tim Dennis) 14 ran

Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No 5.

Stewards Note:

CLAY: Following its run on 7/2/2023 it was reported that the horse stopped quickly

Probable S.P’s: 6-1 Mutual Respect (IRE), 13-2 Prince Rhinegold (IRE), 7-1 Port Or Starboard (IRE), 17-2 Clay (GB), 10-1 Gorcombe Moonshine (GB), 12-1 Watchoutitscookie (IRE), 16-1 Jacks Orchard (IRE), 18-1 Ballygoe (IRE), 20-1 Wells Glory (IRE), 22-1 Presgrave (IRE), 25-1 Talimar Pearl (FR), 28-1 Girandole (FR), 33-1 Looking For Larry (IRE), Army of One (GER), 50-1 Flamenco de Kerser (FR), 150-1 Tally’s Son (GB)

Though he needs to brush up on his jumping, MUTUAL RESPECT is clearly up to winning off this sort of mark judged on his latest effort at Huntingdon (probably would’ve won had he not unseated rider 2 out). He gets the nod ahead of Clay, who should appreciate returning to this trip after finding 19f too much of a test at Taunton. Recent C&D scorer Prince Rhinegold and Port Or Starboard are other likely players, while Jacks Orchard is worth a second look in the betting.

Racehorse and Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials ensure that racecourses deliver these standards. In addition Exeter Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
