CUE CARD It was 10 years ago that dual Cheltenham Festival™ winner Cue Card tasted success in today’s feature, the Betway Haldon Gold Cup. Owned by the Bishop’s he propelled the Tizzard operation to the greatest of heights and became a real fan favourite during his eight years of racing. A first start at Fontwell was a mere taste of the things to come and his next start saw him line-up in the Cheltenham bumper at odds of 40/1. No-one could have predicted he would have won in the style he did that day and you couldn’t help but be impressed.

As in racing, nothing is ever simple and despite a couple of excellent hurdling wins, he couldn’t quite manage back-toback Cheltenham success and finished a valiant fourth in the Supreme novices’ hurdle.

He always shaped as though chasing would be his game and he didn’t disappoint, spending the next eight seasons over the larger obstacles.

He registered another two wins before finishing second behind Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle, who as we all know turned out to be some horse himself!

Cue Card was put away for the summer and returned at Exeter on the 12th November 2012. He faced four rivals on that day, being sent off the eventual 5/6 favourite. It was a jumping performance to savour, and he fairly routed the opposition to win by an eased down 26 lengths.

He went onto win two Grade 1’s that season and despite him being unable to win it the following year his performance in 2021 will live long in the memory.

In 2015/16 he enjoyed arguably his best season to date winning three Grade 1’s, that included the prestigious King George at Kempton. He unfortunately fell in the Cheltenham Gold Cup when holding every chance but redeemed himself at Aintree when winning by nine lengths in the Bowl Chase.

He’d go onto win two more Graded races before retiring in 2018. We look forward to welcoming him back today.

Fifth Race

PLAY SMARTER

THE HISTORIC HALDON GOLD CUP The first Haldon Gold Cup was run in October 1982 as a weight-for-age race and is now celebrated as the ‘jewel in Exeter’s Crown.’ This is a race steeped in rich racing history.

The feature fixture is an early season highlight at Exeter Racecourse and typically attracts some of the country’s best two mile chasers.

It is also considered a stepping-stone to the world’s most prestigious race over this distance, the Queen Mother Champion Chase which takes place at The Festival™ the following March.

Henrietta Knight has enjoyed numerous successes in the renowned Grade 2 chase winning a record four times with Best Mate (2001), Edredon Bleu (2002 and 2003) and Impek (2006). She reflects: “It is always exciting to win that particular race. You get a tremendous reception and everyone is so welcoming. It’s at the beginning of the season and a prestigious race to win. If you do well, you really look forward to the rest of the season.”

Paul Nicholls has saddled seven winners to date in Haldon Hill’s most esteemed stage and he speaks fondly of it as ‘one of the early chasing highlights of the season’. He agrees: “I’II try and save a nice horse for it.

It’s a very good start for two-mile horses. Kauto Star finished second in the race in 2005 before he went on to win the Tingle Creek, and we’ve won it with Lake Kariba, Flagship Uberalles, Azertyuiop, Tchico Polos, Vibrato Valtat and in 2017, Politologue.” In 2020 Greaneteen added his name to the roll of honour and went onto win the Celebration Chase at Sandown and the Tingle Creek in 2021.

This race has acted as a benchmark early on in the career of many iconic racehorses who have then gone on to make history. The likes of Cue Card and Sabin du Loir have claimed this title and the 2021 Haldon Gold Cup is set to be just as exhilarating.

Last year the race went the way of the then Colin and Joe Tizzard-trained Eldorado Allen. Brendan Powell anchored the seven-year-old in last place and was happy to let the race play out in front of him. Coming into the straight he made his move and brought the son of Khalkevi alongside market favourite Hitman. The pair settled down to fight it out and despite Hitman looking like he was getting the better of the argument, Eldorado Allen kept finding and ran down Hitman inside the final furlong This year Joe Tizzard is represented by another grey. War Lord will be looking to make it back-to-back successes in the race for the Tizzard Powell combination but in his way stands a couple of more than worthy rivals.

Paul Nicholls once again returns with Dolos and double seeking Greaneteen, who is giving away over a stone to all his rivals.

Dan Skelton goes in search of his first win in the race with Third Time Lucki, while the Alan Jones trained and 2019 Arkle second Us And Them completes the field.

THE BETWAY HALDON GOLD CUP TODAY’S HORSES AND JOCKEYS GREANETEEN

The first of two by trained by the champion trainer Paul Nicholls. Greaneteen is the mount of Harry Cobden and goes in search of a second Betway Haldon Gold Cup. He will be bidding to follow in the footsteps of God’s Own by winning it for a second time. Nicholls has an excellent record in the race, wining it three times in the last ten years.

THIRD TIME LUCKI

At only seven, Third Time Lucki is still very much unexposed and traditionally this race has gone the way of an improving type. He got off to a flying start over fences, winning twice before being beaten at Sandown by this year’s Arkle winner Edwardstone. He’ll be looking to recapture some of that winning form today under Harry Skelton.

WAR LORD

Joe Tizzard has been enjoying a fine time of things since taking over from his father Colin Tizzard and he’ll be hoping War Lord can take advantage of this fine form on seasonal debut. The striking grey is looking to register a fourth success over the larger obstacles and did win on his first start after a break last year.

DOLOS

Nicholls other runner in the field is one of two nine-yearolds to take their place. Dolos has mixed it with the best of them over the years and certainly brings a lot of experience to the race. He signed off last season at Warwick when finishing second in a Handicap Chase and earlier in the year had won at Sandown. Lorcan Williams takes the ride.

US AND THEM

Our final runner in this year’s renewal is Us And Them for Alan Jones. Tom O’Brien retains the ride aboard the former Joseph O’Brien trained runner and the pair go in search of a first win together. This will be no easy task but he has run well in some big races before but may be lacking a bit of confidence after he failed to finish on his last two starts.
