Sir David Prosser Trophy to be awarded to

most successful Epsom trainer

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2025 racing season.

The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.

The award for the 2023/24 season was given to Jim Boyle and Simon Dow, both with 18 winners across the 12 month period. They were closely followed by Michael Atwater with 17 winners. The award was presented at the Epsom Owners and Trainers’ Ball in November 2024.

The 2024/25 award started on the 5th November last year, and current standings as of 17th April 2025.

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2025 runs from 5th November 2024 to 4th November 2025.

Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. For more information on the trainers and training facilities at Epsom Downs please visit: www.jockeyclubestates.co.uk/epsom

CORAZON ESPINADO

Epsom Downs Racecourse are delighted to today announce the appointment of CORAZON ESPINADO as our Horses for Courses ambassador.

Meet Jim Allen

Jim Allen took up the mantle as Epsom Downs General Manager in October 2024 and is heading into his first season at Epsom Downs. A true racing lover, Jim’s fascination with the great sport started at a young age and a fantastic career sees him now at the helm of the racecourse delivering the greatest flat race in the world

Jim’s life has revolved around horse racing, right from his early years all the way through to his new role! “As a toddler, I would ride my rocking horse while the races were on, and I would cry if Lester Piggott lost a race—apparently! Growing up in an Irish family, I was immersed in the culture of watching races and placing bets By the age of ten, I could write and calculate any bet, and I even managed to place my first wager in the shop by the age of twelve!”

Inspired by the movie Phar Lap during his youth, Jim decided he wanted to trainhisownracehorseoneday.Topursuethisdream, hewenttoEpsomto work for Roger Curtis on weekends and during holidays andlater attended university to study equine science. His early career involved the successful management of two UK racecourses, Huntingdon and Sedgefield, before serving as Racing Director at Arena Racing Company (ARC) between 2006 and 2015. In this role he oversaw the operational running of more than 500 fixtures a year and his accomplishments included the innovation of the All-Weather Championships, the introduction of the new Tapeta racing surface at Newcastle and Wolverhampton racecourses and launch of sectional timing at all ARC tracks.

Jim went on to train racehorses across the US and in France between 2016 and2022,beforejoiningTapetaFootingsasitsOperationsDirectorin2023 to create new racing surfaces at iconic US racecourses such as Belmont Park and Santa Anita. His return to the UK saw a stint as Operations Director at British Champions Series before joining team Epsom Downs after the successful delivery of British Champions Day.

As the 2025 seaon approaches, Jim is filled with excitement and anticipation. “I guess what I’m looking forward to most is putting on a successfulshowthateveryonecanenjoy,bothon-courseandontelevision, in the UK and internationally I’m hoping to introduce a few changes that will elevate The Betfred Derby back to where it belongs: The greatest Flat race in the world.”

STRESSFREE: Following its run on 30/3/2025 it was reported that the horse suffered interference late-on. MAGICO: Following its run on 30/3/2025 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed under pressure.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 City of Delight (USA), 7-2 Magico (IRE), 9-2 King’s Code (GB), 11-2 Stressfree (FR), 9-1 Rathgar (GB), 11-1 Warda Jamila (IRE), 16-1 Sean (GER)

CITY OF DELIGHT had a number of today’s rivals behind when striking fast and late to make it 5 wins from his last 6 starts on return at Doncaster 23 days ago, overcoming a less-than-ideal passage in the process to win going away. He’s not done improving yet on that evidence and earns the vote in the hope he’s as effective at this track. Magico and Stressfree, who finished 2-4 respectively, rate next best, ahead of facile Pontefract scorer King’s Code in a smashing contest.

David Menuisier’s Master Builder must bounce back from a belowpareffortintheNovemberHandicap when last seen but was an excellent third in the always-competitive Melrose Handicap at York last term before scoring impressively at Haydock and remains with plenty of potential. Tryfan makes his stable debut for Harry Charlton and looks well treated from a mark of 77 but his best form has come on the AllWeather, whilst Arqoob arrives here on the back of a victory at Kempton

and has race fitness on side over plenty of these. Asgard’s Captain was third here on Derby Day last season for Dylan Cunha and steps backupintripfromthesamemark.

Andrew Balding has landed the Weatherbys Digital Solutions NoviceStakes in three of the last six years and saddles Topteam for King Power here. The Oasis Dream colt is related to impressive London Gold Cup winner King’s Gambit but must improveonwhathehasshownintwo startsthisyear.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to

British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
