As a bookmaker, the Derby has always been one of my favourite days of the year and being headline sponsor makes it even more special.
It is also an honour to once again have His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen in attendance at Epsom this afternoon.
This is my fourth year of sponsoring the world’s greatest race, and I have enjoyed three of my best working days of my life.
Presenting Aidan O’Brien with his ninth, tenth and eleventh Betfred Derby winners’ prizes over those years shows how hard he is to beat, and after his 1-2-3 in the French Derby last week, could he do the same in the Betfred Derby this afternoon?
As I approach my 60th year as a bookmaker, the Derby still gives me the same buzz as my first one back in 1968 when Sir Ivor won. He was an odds-on favourite ridden by Lester Piggott and trained by Vincent O’Brien. Everyone backed him, and it was a shocker of a result for my first Derby.
Nijinsky (1970) and Shergar (1981) also stick in the memory as bad results for the book but creating legends is priceless and more recently we have had exceptional winners like Galileo (2001) and Sea The Stars (2009).
We used to take on extra staff to cope with the demand of Derby Day and this year we have brought people to the famous Hill on the buses in a throwback to yesteryear to try and bring the buzz back.
I would like to express thanks also to Jim Allen and all of the management and staff here at Epsom Downs Racecourse, The Jockey Club, ITV Racing and Racing TV, the press, all the jockeys, trainers and everyone who contributes to the great sport of horseracing.
My final thank you is to you, the racegoer, for joining us here today for Betfred Derby Day and creating such a brilliant atmosphere at one of the great institutions on the sporting calendar.

One of our new concepts is Galileo’s, where O Beach Ibiza is hosting an all-day activation. There are also new bars and food concessions for you to enjoy across the racecourse, along with Gaucho, a walk-in restaurant for those wanting to combine a thrilling day of racing with a fantastic dining experience.
The Betfred Derby, the fourth Classic of the British Flat season and the world’s most famous race, is our feature today and worth £2 million in prize money. Run over a mile and a half, it is the ultimate test of the Thoroughbred. The roll of honour includes some of the greatest names in racing history and today’s renewal promises to be another compelling

Alongside the Betfred Derby, today now features the £1 million Coolmore Coronation Cup, which moves to Saturday and forms part of a thrilling sequence of top-class racing in the build-up to the Betfred Derby itself.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. We owe legendary Epsom trainer, Stanley Wootton MC, a great debt of gratitude In 1969 he secured The Derby’s home at Epsom with his gift, to the nation, of the 250 acres of Six Mile Hill gallops on Walton Downs, the backdrop for racing’s Blue Riband event, The Derby. ‘In handing over the gallops, I have very much in mind what the people of England have given the Wootton family.’
Epsom had become Stanley’s home when his father, Dick, relocated his wife, and two sons, from Australia, and success soon came knocking. Training from Treadwell House, Dick’s bargain-basement horses were skilfully trained, cunningly placed and heavily backed Meantime, Stanley’s elder brother Frank became champion Flat jockey in Britain four times, before he was 20, whilst Stanley rode his first winner aged 11, going on to win the Chester Cup when he was 14. He lied about his age at the outbreak of The Great War in order to join the Royal Fusiliers and fought at the Battle of the Somme Shipwrecked on his way there, in Palestine, he was decorated for ‘conspicuous gallantry, repeatedly attempting to force his way, single-handedly, into enemy trenches’. Queen Alexandra presented him with his MC at Buckingham Palace on August 8th, 1916. When hostilities ceased, Stanley took over his father’s yard.
As a trainer he won several big handicaps, including the Cambridgeshire and on three occasions, between 1921 and 1926, he trained more winners in a season than any other trainer By the 1930’s, he owned all the horses himself and when asked if he had the largest stable in Britain, his reply was: ‘I know of none larger.’
Possibly, too, he was the greatest trainer of jockeys. At one time he had 24 apprentices indentured to him simultaneously. One season 17 rode winners, three became champion Flat jockey; five became champion National Hunt jockey and one of them, Charlie Smirke, went on to ride 20 Classic winners. In 1939, Stanley ceased training in Epsom and concentrated on his breeding operation in Australia, to where he imported such stallions as Noholme and Star Kingdom, who sired the first five Golden Slipper winners.
He returned to Epsom in 1950, training again until handing in his licence in 1962, dispersing his horses to former pupils, particularly to the far-famed Staff Ingham. On Staff’s death in 1977, Stanley gave up owning horses altogether and concentrated on his duties as a JP, a director of Kempton Park Racecourse and chairman, at various times, of both the Owners Association and the Trainers Association. Racing’s great benefactor died in 1986. A devout catholic, he is buried in Epsom, 200 yards from the old family stables at Treadwell. Once dubbed ‘The Emperor of Epsom’, Stanley was ever mindful of how much the town meant to his family, and we, in turn, need to remember how much the sport of kings owe to him to this very day.

Laine Theatre Arts is extremely proud to once again be singing the national anthem for His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen. Today’s anthem will be performed by a Dectet (10) of singers, further joined by the LTA choir before the Betfred Derby this afternoon.
Laine Theatre Arts is a world-renowned Musical Theatre College based in Epsom with an enviable list of graduates which include Oscar award winning directors, Olivier and Tony award winning choreographers and performers to name a few.
Today’s singers include: Lawrie Banks, Reece Christian, Kiera Espey, Milla Hawkins, Julian Jackson, Lauren Carter, Marisa Hall, Clodach Murphy, Mikey Stovold and Lewis Buhagiar All of the performers are studying for their qualifications in Professional Musical Theatre in Epsom and hope to graduate into one of the West End’s many incredible shows.
We are delighted to welcome the Executive Director of the College, Harry Hughes here today. He and the singers are extremely honoured to have been given the opportunity to perform at such a prestigious national event for Their Majesties and patrons of the 2026 Betfred Derby Festival.

10 YEARS AGO – The late Aga Khan IV equalled his grandfather’s total of five winners when Harzand was successful, following on from the successes of Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988) and Sinndar (2000). Harzand became the first Derby winner sired by 2009 hero Sea The Stars. The winning jockey, Pat Smullen, tragically passed away from cancer aged just 43 in September 2020.
20 YEARS AGO – A multi-horse finish rivalled that of 1913 as the closest ever. In a four-way photo, Sir Percy beat Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas and Hala Bek a short-head, a head and a short-head. Eight winners have had the prefix Sir: Sir Peter Teazle (1787), Sir Thomas (1788), Sir Harry (1798), Sir Bevys (1879), Sir Hugo (1892), Sir Visto (1895), Sir Ivor (1968), and most recently Sir Percy.
30 YEARS AGO – Alex Greaves became the first woman to ride in the race, finishing last on 500-1 outsider Portuguese Lil. Shaamit won for trainer William Haggas –his first runner in the race.
40 YEARS AGO – One of the most famous finishes to the Derby of all-time saw Shahrastani hold off the strong late challenge of Dancing Brave. Bold Arrangement became the first horse to contest both America’s Kentucky Derby and The Derby, finishing second at Churchill Downs to Ferdinand and 14th at Epsom Downs.
50 YEARS AGO – Lester Piggott enjoyed the seventh of his record nine Derby winners aboard Empery, trained in France by Maurice Zilber and owned by American Nelson Bunker Hunt.
60 YEARS AGO – It was a second victory for ace Australian jockey Scobie Breasley aboard Charlottown.
70 YEARS AGO – For the first time, overseas-trained horses – Lavandin (France), Montaval (France) and Roistar (Ireland) – occupied the first three places.
80 YEARS AGO – The Derby returned to Epsom Downs following Word War II and a 50-1 chance, Airborne, became the most recent of four grey winners.
90 YEARS AGO – The 3rd Aga Khan became the second man to own and breed both the winner and runner-up, Mahmoud and Taj Akbar. Jonathan Peel in 1844 was the first. Mahmoud, the third of the four grey winners, set a new record time of 2m 33.8s which stood until Lammtarra’s victory in 1995.
100 YEARS AGO – Coronach became the third of trainer Fred Darling’s seven Derby winners.
200 YEARS AGO – Owner the 3rd Earl of Egremont won his fifth and final Derby courtesy of Lap-Dog.

Ten Bob Tony won last year’s renewal at Haydock but has been in indifferent form since and was well beaten there a month ago. Never So Brave will be popular but he may not relish the expected overnight rain unlike ALCANTOR He looked like he needed his return at Leopardstown, the market said the same and expect to see a much different horse this afternoon.
It’s hard to believe She’s Perfect has still only won a maiden having been disqualified form the French 1000 Guineas last year and going so close in other top races. Sparks Fly was third in this race last year but the vote goes to the improving PINA SONATA She has a win on softer ground on her CV and was very impressive at Kempton on her return.
RACE THREE
Calandagan was rated the best racehorse in the World for 2025. There were some concerns from connections about all the rain forecast despite him handling some give, but it may tilt the scales in favour of 2024 Betfred St Leger JAN BRUEGHEL retaining his title. With Coolmore sponsoring the race, they will want to secure a success and they have thrown Lambourn into the mix as he returns to the scene of his finest hour Convergent looked very good in victory at Newbury recently and isn’t discounted, although he still has a bit to find with the leading players
RACE FOUR
Stormy Impact won the 3yo version last year and has fared well in the draw where high numbers are usually best. His stablemate Vintage Clarets has run well in a previous edition of this race and has also fared well with the draw, he could run a big race at a decent price if putting his best foot forward. Kinswoman is lightly raced and progressive and will be a popular selection but DYONISOS has been chinned twice by two horses in the same ownership this season, the form working out well, and can have his day to shine

Last year’s winning trainer, Aidan O’Brien, saddles four including likely favourite Benvenuto Cellini, who bids to follow in the hoofprints of last years winner Lambourn, both winning the same Killarney maiden and heading here after Chester Vase victory The pick though is stablemate PIERRE BONNARD who was winter favourite after his Group 1 success in France and the rain that has fallen this week is certainly in his favour. The unbeaten Item heads the home challenge afterhis Dante win at York forAndrew Balding and Colin Keane while the Lingfield Derby Trial first two, Maltese Cross and Bay Of Brilliance also hold leading claims
Folk Pageant made it two from two upped to this ten furlong trip when winning at Chester recently and could land the hat-trick while Andrew Blading has won three of the last eight running’s and saddles Allegresse in an attempt to extend that record HELL YEAH HE DID signed off with a victory on his fourth start last season on soft ground at Nottingham, has had a gelding operation over the winter and he could be well handicapped on his return to action.
RACE SEVEN
Spinning Wheel bumped into one last time on his seasonal return at Goodwood, could still be improving as a lightly raced 4yo and hails from stall one like two of the last three winners. Night Breeze was an impressive winner of the Great Met over track and trip when last seen at the Spring Meeting and looks set to go well once more. Gary & Josh Moore could strike again with GIVE IT TO ME OJ with Ryan’s son Toby Moore in the saddle. He won over track and trip in September.
RACE EIGHT
Two of the last three winners head here with last year’s scorer Sondad and 2023 winner Badri back for more. Fine Interview has a tremendous strike rate, winning three of his last four, some on soft ground and could easily be group class standard Twilight Jet is on a hat-trick but has been clobbered by the handicapper for a pair of Lingfield victories The final vote goes to old boy APOLLO ONE who, despite being a long time between drinks, was second in 2023 and third in 2024 and looked a rapid improver at Newmarket on his seasonal return.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
NEVER SO BRAVE ought to take a bit of beating on the class drop Progressive last year and winner of the Group 1 City Of York Stakes in August, Andrew Balding’s charge was deemed good enough for the QEII at Ascot and then shaped as though he was in need of the run in the Bet365 Mile on his Sandown return. Rated 116, he should be winning a race like this. Ten Bob Tony won this contest when run at Haydock in 2025 and would make some each-way appeal if bouncing back from his latest effort at the same venue, but the main danger is Joseph O’Brien’s French recruit Alcantor.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
First past the post before being controversially demoted to second in last year’s French 1,000 Guineas, Shes Perfect boasts every chance on that form but needs to improve on her returning Goodwood third. Pacific Mission makes some appeal as the sole three-year-old in the race, but it could be worth chancing SPARKS FLY. EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
This is a fascinating renewal and the rematch is on between last year’s first and second JAN BRUEGHEL and Calandagan. It was the last time Calandagan tasted defeat as he’s been on a remarkable winning streak which has included top races such as the King George, Champion Stakes and Japan Cup Also a winner on his seasonal return in the Dubai Sheema Classic, the French raider is expected to go well here again but may just come up short if Ryan Moore can give Jan Brueghel another inspired ride like 12 months ago. He looked to be on good terms with himself on his Chester return and, with three runners in the race, Ballydoyle could dominate this tactically, just like they did in the Prix du Jockey Club last weekend. Last year’s Derby winner Lambourn also made a pleasing return at Chester in the Huxley Stakes and isn’t out of this

On June 3, 2006, racehorse trainer Marcus Tregoning and owners Anthony and Victoria Pakenham enjoyed the greatest day in their racing lives when their star three-year-old colt Sir Percy won a thrilling renewal of the Derby.
It was one of the closest finishes to the middledistance Classic with just two short heads and a neck separating the first four. UsetheQRcodeto watchtherace.
“I didn’t stand in a good place to watch, so when he crossed the line, I thought he was second!” laughed Tregoning. “I couldn’t believe it when his number was called, and it was just a feeling of relief, and then elation.”
But despite the close finish, there was no fluke about the result, the horse already having some brilliant form to his name The market also spoke in his favour, as he was sent off the 6/1 second favourite for the Classic.
A highly talented two-year-old, Sir Percy had romped through a victorious unbeaten juvenile campaign, rounding off that first racing year with a splendid Group 1 win in the Dewhurst Stakes His first run as a three-year-old came in the 2000 Guineas when he put in a brilliant performance to finish two-lengths second to George Washington.
Losing nothing in defeat at Newmarket, the son of Mark Of Esteem was then installed as one of the market leaders for the Epsom Classic, but preparation for the first Saturday in June proved to be a challenging time for Tregoning and his team.
“We couldn’t ride him after the Guineas, he’d come back from Newmarket a bit jarred, and it was only until 10 days before the Derby that we got a saddle on his back,” recalled the trainer “We couldn’t even swim him because he was sore through his hamstrings and his back.
Just three days after we started riding him again, we galloped him at Lingfield and he absolutely flew. We knew that if he came out of that work sound, he would win the Derby!”
Asked why he thinks Sir Percy was so talented, Tregoning said, “He had such guts and determination, he wanted to do it. You don’t see it in many horses, that real determination to win, and he was like that.”
The colt’s physique and action played its part too, and his unique attributes stood out to Tregoning right from when he first saw the colt as an unbroken yearling at Tattersalls
“Even as a yearling, he was a lovely-topped horse, and he had a wonderful head and eye, and this most amazing walk,” said the trainer on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Epsom win. “We got him home and I had him sold, but a month later the guy called with second thoughts I told him to leave it – I needed an owner for him as I was footing the bills!
“Amazingly, the next call I got was from Victoria, who asked if she could take a share in the colt, and I said, ‘You can buy the whole horse!’ “It was for luck – the Pakenhams are lovely people, we had an amazing journey together, and they still have horses with me.”
The 23-year-old Sir Percy is alive and thriving at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket where he stood throughout his stallion career He finished in the covering shed three years ago, and when Tregoning is in Newmarket he regularly spends time with his comrade of 2006.
“He still looks fabulous and has that amazing walk. I like to look at him as an individual, look at his confirmation, see why he was such a good racehorse, remind myself just how good he was.”
He concluded: “The Derby is the greatest test of a three-year-old, it is the greatest race in the world, we were so lucky to have a horse as good as Sir Percy.”
THEHISTORYOF The Betfred Derby
In 1776, ‘Gentleman’ Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into The Derby family and had passed on the lease of his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley, urged his friend to introduce a race for three-year-old fillies over a mile and a half to emulate old comrade in arms Anthony St Leger, founder of the St Leger at Doncaster.
Three years later, on May 14th 1779, the Downs above the spa town of Epsom hosted the initial Oaks and, appropriately, Lord Derby’s Bridget was victorious. At a celebratory party that evening, Burgoyne proposed that, because the Oaks had been such a great success, a similar race should be founded for both colts and fillies.
Sir Charles Bunbury, a distinguished figure in the world of horseracing, was behind the concept of racing over a mile or a mile and a half. Legend has it that Bunbury and Derby discussed the possibility and all that was left to do was name the race. Apparently, it was the toss of a coin in the latter’s favour that secured the race title, which started a worldwide franchise and lives on as strongly as ever.
On May 4th 1780, the inaugural Derby Stakes was run for £1,065 15s. Despite losing the flip of the coin, Bunbury gained some compensation when Diomed carried his pink and white silks to success over a mile. The distance was changed to the present mile and a half in 1784
Lord Derby had to wait until 1787 before he saw his colours triumph in the Classic, when the previously unraced Sir Peter Teazle scored under Sam Arnull. Sir Peter Teazle was retired to stud in October 1789 and developed into a great sire.
By the middle of the 19th Century, The Derby had established itself as the most important race of the year in Britain, with many thousands flocking to Epsom Downs where there was also a huge fair.
The Classic used to be run on the first Wednesday in June, but since 1995 has taken place on the first Saturday of that month. The British Parliament did not sit on Derby Day for many years, such was the prestige of the premier Classic.
Copies of the race were spawned around the world and there are now well over 100 different Derbys, some very illustrious like the Kentucky Derby and others less so.
After the American Civil War, the Kentucky thoroughbred industry experienced hard times and Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark represented a group interested in reviving racing in the US state. He travelled to England and France in 1872 to study European horseracing. While in England, Colonel Clark saw the famous Derby at Epsom Downs and, when he returned to Louisville, he made plans to create a race like the one he had witnessed.
The Kentucky Derby, which was first run at Churchill Downs in 1875, takes place on dirt rather than turf and is contested over a mile and a quarter rather than a mile and a half. The name Derby was used in America and many other countries to denote the best race for three-year-olds.
Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey has always been the stage for the premier British Classic, except during both World Wars (1915-1918, 1940-1945) when the course was used to house prisoners of war. A substitute race, the New Derby, was staged at Newmarket instead.
The Betfred Derby, a supreme challenge for three-year-olds over the unique undulating Epsom Downs track, remains the most prestigious Flat race in the world. It is staged for the 247th time in 2026 and sponsored for the fourth time by Betfred. In 2026 it will have record prize money of £2 million.
The Derby boasts an illustrious roll of honour, which includes Bay Middleton, Ormonde, Isinglass, Hyperion and Bahram, while the last 60 years alone have seen such luminaries prevail as Sea-Bird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Shergar, Nashwan, Generous, Lammtarra, Galileo, High Chaparral, New Approach, Sea The Stars and Golden Horn.
Such names contribute to The Derby’s rich history, partly through their outstanding performances at Epsom Downs but also, for some, through their legacy as leading stallions. Galileo, European champion sire in 2008 thanks largely to his Derby winner New Approach and Coronation Cup victor Soldier Of Fortune and again from 2010 to 2020 inclusive, demonstrated his prowess over the course in 2001. Galileo has since sired a record five winners of the Betfred Derby, most recently Serpentine in 2020.
As recently as 2024, the Betfred Derby winner City Of Troy went on to be named the world’s joint-best horse of the year at the Longines World Racing Awards.

Benvenuto Cellini was installed as favourite for this year’s renewal after routing the field in the Chester Vase back in May. He was entitled to win in the manner that he did under a penalty but there was no getting away from just how impressive he was. Aidan O’Brien has always been extremely complimentary about his chances and it’s easy to see why, with plenty of improvement almost certain to come The race also served as a trial for last year’s victor Lambourn, so Benvenuto Cellini is easy to make the case for.

On seasonal reappearance he won in spite of not looking fully tuned up and at Lingfield he looked much more the finished article The son of 2009 Derby winner Sea The Stars quickened up nicely last time out at Lingfield before then battling on gamely to hold the determined challenge of Bay Of Brilliance. There looked to be plenty left in the tank at the finish and you’d fancy him to be in the finish.

Last year’s Betfred Derby winning jockey, Wayne Lordan, will lay a wreath at the statue of Leser Piggott today at 1:10PM
Piggott, who died aged 86 on May 29, 2022, rode in The Derby an unsurpassed 36 times between 1951 and 1994, winning on a record nine occasions aboard Never Say Die (1954), Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983).
Nicknamed ‘The Long Fellow’, Lester also partnered six Oaks winners and recorded a record nine victories in the Coronation Cup.
The wreath-laying ceremony first took place in 2022 when Ryan Moore performed the honour. Frankie Dettori performed the duty in 2023, in 2024 the wreath was laid by Lester’s daughter Maureen Haggas. Betfred boss Fred Done laid the wreath last year
In every year going forward, a floral wreath in the colours of Piggott’s 1970 Derby winner Nijinsky, the last horse to win the English Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger), will be laid at the Lester Piggott statue on the Queen Elizabeth II Stand lawn.
Additionally, today’s Cherryfield (Croydon) Lester Piggott Handicap is staged in commemoration of the great man.
