I am delighted to once again be associated with such an historic event and an exciting renewal of the fillies’ classic, the Betfred Oaks this afternoon, the highlight of today’s eight-race card

Having been a high street bookmaker for the last 59 years, Oaks Day is full of memories, some good ones, some painful. Dunfermline was owned by the much-missed HM Queen Elizabeth II and it cost me an absolute fortune when winning in the Silver Jubilee year of 1977. Oh So Sharp (1985) was a very special filly who went on to win the fillies’ triple crown, while Enable (2017) was another impressive winner that I’ll never forget

Last year, we witnessed the Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O’Brien take home both classics, an eleventh Betfred Oaks courtesy of Minnie Hauk and an eleventh Betfred Derby with Lambourn. He has a great chance of doing the same again.

This afternoon O’Brien saddles impressive Chester winner Amelia Earhart, who looks to follow the same route as Minnie Hauk, as well as Lingfield scorer Cameo.

This will be the fourth year of sponsoring these historic races as I continue my pledge to put the British Classics back at the forefront of Horse Racing in this country and the world!

I would like to express thanks also to Jim Allen and all of the management and staff here at Epsom Downs Racecourse, The Jockey Club, ITV Racing and Racing TV, the press, all the jockeys, trainers and everyone who contributes to the great sport of horseracing.

This year marks an exciting new chapter for this event I hope as you walk around the racecourse you will notice a range of new initiatives and, whether this is your first visit to Epsom Downs or you have been many times before, I would encourage you to explore the site. While there are some familiar areas that we know are popular with racegoers, there is also so much more we have added to improve the experience in 2026. In addition, we are delighted to be welcoming under 18s for free in all General Admission areas and introducing free parking for all, as well as increasing prize money across our cards both today and tomorrow

One of our new concepts is Galileo’s, where O Beach Ibiza will be hosting an all-day activation. There are also new bars and food concessions for you to enjoy across the racecourse, along with Gaucho, a walk-in restaurant for those wanting to combine a thrilling day of racing with a fantastic dining experience.

The Betfred Oaks, the third Classic of the British Flat season, is our feature race today. Run over a mile and a half, this race has been the ultimate test for three-year-old fillies since 1779. The roll of honour includes some of the greatest names in racing history and today’s renewal promises to provide another compelling chapter in that story We wish the very best of luck to all owners, trainers, jockeys and connections taking part

Ladies Day also welcomes the return of the Style Awards in partnership with Debenhams, celebrating the very best in raceday fashion. Open to everyone, the awards champion individuality, confidence and creativity, with no set dress code or rules on style To enter, racegoers simply need to visit the Style Awards on the Hyperion Lawn and have their photograph taken by the event team. You can find out more about the amazing prizes we have on offer on pages 10-11.

We owe legendary Epsom trainer, Stanley Wootton MC, a great debt of gratitude In 1969 he secured The Derby’s home at Epsom with his gift, to the nation, of the 250 acres of Six Mile Hill gallops on Walton Downs, the backdrop for racing’s Blue Riband event, The Derby. ‘In handing over the gallops, I have very much in mind what the people of England have given the Wootton family.’

Epsom had become Stanley’s home when his father, Dick, relocated his wife, and two sons, from Australia, and success soon came knocking. Training from Treadwell House, Dick’s bargain-basement horses were skilfully trained, cunningly placed and heavily backed Meantime, Stanley’s elder brother Frank became champion Flat jockey in Britain four times, before he was 20, whilst Stanley rode his first winner aged 11, going on to win the Chester Cup when he was 14. He lied about his age at the outbreak of The Great War in order to join the Royal Fusiliers and fought at the Battle of the Somme Shipwrecked on his way there, in Palestine, he was decorated for ‘conspicuous gallantry, repeatedly attempting to force his way, single-handedly, into enemy trenches’. Queen Alexandra presented him with his MC at Buckingham Palace on August 8th, 1916. When hostilities ceased, Stanley took over his father’s yard.

As a trainer he won several big handicaps, including the Cambridgeshire and on three occasions, between 1921 and 1926, he trained more winners in a season than any other trainer By the 1930’s, he owned all the horses himself and when asked if he had the largest stable in Britain, his reply was: ‘I know of none larger.’

Possibly, too, he was the greatest trainer of jockeys. At one time he had 24 apprentices indentured to him simultaneously. One season 17 rode winners, three became champion Flat jockey; five became champion National Hunt jockey and one of them, Charlie Smirke, went on to ride 20 Classic winners. In 1939, Stanley ceased training in Epsom and concentrated on his breeding operation in Australia, to where he imported such stallions as Noholme and Star Kingdom, who sired the first five Golden Slipper winners.

He returned to Epsom in 1950, training again until handing in his licence in 1962, dispersing his horses to former pupils, particularly to the far-famed Staff Ingham. On Staff’s death in 1977, Stanley gave up owning horses altogether and concentrated on his duties as a JP, a director of Kempton Park Racecourse and chairman, at various times, of both the Owners Association and the Trainers Association. Racing’s great benefactor died in 1986. A devout catholic, he is buried in Epsom, 200 yards from the old family stables at Treadwell. Once dubbed ‘The Emperor of Epsom’, Stanley was ever mindful of how much the town meant to his family, and we, in turn, need to remember how much the sport of kings owe to him to this very day.

RACE ONE

Naana’s Shadow shows a lot of early speed and that will help Oisin Murphy get a good position, but the standside is the place to be in sprints at Epsom on soft ground. SHES GOT A BROTHER is drawn one off the rail and was just behind Naana’s Shadow at York but can turn that form around here and claim victory.

Fancied runners usually come to the fore in the Woodcote while a low draw is ideal although ground may make it more of a level playing field if they decide to head to the standside. A lot of the market leaders this year have wide draws, other than Possessive whodiditnicelyatYork.Hedidflashhistaillateonandthefavouritedisappointedinthatrace,soitmaybeworthlookingelsewhere.

RLASTHOPE has an eye-catching jockey booking in Colin Keane, has fair form with his second to Adonious at Musselburgh well advertised since and the third at York in a big field looking solid. Crucially, he is well drawn in stall five and is a decent each way price. Also at a bigger price, I’d give a chance to Ardad Steve if stall 14 didn’t prove a barrier Although only fourth on debut at Yarmouth, he was unlucky in running and trainer Eve Johnson Houghton won the race in 2023 and went close last year too.

RACE THREE

A cracking renewal of the Betfred Diomed Stakes Qirat sprung a surprise when winning the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood last summer but hasn’t performed since while Seagulls Eleven won well in France recently and can give the Brighton footballers who own him a good day out. It has to be PERSICA though to maintain his 100% record at Epsom having won a handicap in 2024 and then this race twelve months ago. He had a penalty to carry last year too and was still too good for Ice Max in second and that could be the same result in 2026.

RACE FOUR

A fascinating contest. Sallaal went into many notebooks when second at Epsom five weeks ago, but he has been given a 5lb rise for not winning. He could still go close while Respond got a 9lb rise for an impressive Chester win so this demands more. Hand Of God may prefer quicker ground but also was impressive last time while Let’s Dream has his conditions and is another last time out winner. The pick is ALPHA CRUCIS who was a brilliant fifth in the Lincoln at Doncaster on his return. He was second in this race last year under Jason Watson and also runner-up on his only other visit to the track, likes soft ground and is a decent each way price.

RACE SIX

RACE FIVE

Aidan O’Brien has three darts at claiming a twelfth Betfred Oaks with Amelia Earhart looking to take the same route as last years heroine Minnie Hauk by coming here via winning the Cheshire Oaks with A La Prochaine and Sugar Island behind. She has all he attributes but can be quirky, so A LA PROCHAINE can be fancied to turn the form around She is a big filly who was still learning on just her second start at Chester, staying on well and the mush softer conditions here will suit her Her stablemate On Message is improving fast and can outrun her big price, especially having experience of the track when winning two starts ago at Epsom. Legacy Link took the Musidora in battling style and got a taste of Epsom last week at the gallops morning where she handled it well. She will be popular but was behind Venetian Lace in the Fillies’ Mile last year, and that one ran a cracker to be third in the Betfred 1000 Guineas. She will appreciate the distance more than most but there is a slight going concern for her on soft ground

Anothercracking big field handicap where a low draw is usually key, but again ground conditions may dictate otherwise Two of the last four winners were drawn in stall 1 including last years winner Mirsky who is back for more. This time he is out in ten and has 6lb more to carry after a win two starts ago. Stall 1 this time goes to Sterling Knight who ran up the standside golden highway at Newmarket to beat Jimmy Speaking last time Jamie Spencer is an eye catching booking for Bragbor in stall 3 while Asmen Warrior from 5 may want drier ground Principality got up in the dying strides at Nottingham and has a chance, but the vote goes to MAN OF LA MANCHA who has run two solid races in good handicaps this season, has soft form ground on his CV and looks likely to continue to improve as a 4yo.

RACE SEVEN

Stall 2 has been the place to be in this with half of the last eight winners coming from there. Postmodern is housed in that stall here but has ground to make up on NORTHERN CHAMPION on their Meydan meeting in February Northern Champion has been talked of as a Commonwealth Cup hope so will need to win here to earn a date at Royal Ascot. His latest run can be forgiven against the older Group 1 sprinters as circumstances were against him. He has the plum draw in stall 1 and acts well on soft ground. Oisin Murphy has ridden the last two winners of this race and Stellar Sunrise will be popular, but he did run a rare poor race on his only soft ground effort to date so that is a concern while the lightly raced Greek Mythology is interesting for Joseph O’Brien.

RACE EIGHT

The finale on Betfred Oaks Day looks ultra-competitive with sixteen runners set to go to post. Dance In The Strom will be all the rage after she did so well to win at Chester. She has a good draw in two and is a bona fide seven furlong performer. She’ll be hard to beat but the final vote has to go to race specialist RHOSCOLYN. He won his race as a 3yo back in 2021 and again in 2024 before a close third last year so loves the track, acts well with give in the ground and ran a blinder on his comeback this season. The draw could have been kinder but he likes to arrive late and as previously stated, the fields have been known to edge standsside in softer conditions. Zarathos is a hat-trick seeker worth considering while Monarch’s Gold was caught by a potential god one at Chester and can go well at a price despite the draw in 15.

BETFREDOAKS AnniversariesIn2026

10 YEARS AGO – It was a sixth Oaks for trainer Aidan O’Brien and a second for jockey Ryan Moore as Minding prevailed. The daughter of Galileo won a further three Group One events in 2016, ending the year as the world’s joint-best three-year-old filly and Cartier Horse of the Year.

20 YEARS AGO – Aidan O’Brien saddled his third Oaks heroine courtesy of Alexandrova. She went on to complete an Oaks treble with success later in the year in the Irish and Yorkshire versions.

30 YEARS AGO – The late Sir Henry Cecil enjoyed the fourth of his eight Oaks victories with Lady Carla, who won by an impressive nine lengths.

40 YEARS AGO – Midway Lady, trained by Ben Hanbury and ridden by Ray Cochrane, followed up on her 1000 Guineas success with a second Classic triumph in the Oaks As a broodmare, she produced the 2005 Oaks winner Eswarah.

50 YEARS AGO –The Oaks went to France with Pawneese winning in the hands of Yves Saint-Martin She subsequently won the Prix de Diane (French Oaks) just nine days later before defeating all-aged opposition in Ascot’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

60 YEARS AGO – Lester Piggott rode the third of his six Oaks winners aboard the Vincent O’Brien-trained Valoris.

70 YEARS AGO – It was a 1-2-3 for French-trained horses as Sicarelle led home Janiari and Yasmin.

80 YEARS AGO – After six runnings at Newmarket during World War II, the Oaks returned to Epsom Downs and was won by Steady Aim, who scored easily by three lengths under jockey Harry Wragg.

90 YEARS AGO – Considered by many to be the luckiest Oaks winner of all-time, Lovely Rosa sprung a 33-1 surprise. The runner-up Barrowby Gem was repeatedly denied a clear run.

100 YEARS AGO – For the second year in succession, the Oaks was won by a horse owned by Viscount Astor and trained by Alec Taylor Jr as Short Story followed up on the 1925 victory of Saucy Sue.

200 YEARS AGO – Lilias won for owner-trainer John Forth. Returned at 15-1, she defeated 1000 Guineas winner and 5-4 Favourite Problem by a length.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY

This is open and only a tentative vote can be afforded to NAANA’S SHADOW, who followed up her Catterick win with a creditable third in a similar event to this at York three weeks ago. She had the measure of Shes Got A Brother (fourth) that day and is now 1lb worse off, but Oisin Murphy gets aboard for the first time and that might be a tip in itself. Wedonttelllies recorded a cosy success at Goodwood recently and must be respected, while Riley Rocks and Coyy are others to watch out for.

THEHISTORYOF The Betfred Oaks

Older than The Derby by a year, The Oaks was the brainchild of Johnny Burgoyne, a soldier, playwright and politician who married into Lord Derby’s family.

Burgoyne had passed on the lease for his Surrey mansion, the Oaks, to his nephew, the 12th Earl of Derby, and persuaded the nobleman to create a race over a mile and a half for three-year-old fillies in response to the St Leger, which had been founded at Doncaster as a two-mile contest for colts of the same age in 1776.

The first Oaks, named after the nearby house, took place in 1779. The winner was Lord Derby’s Bridget, whose sire Herod was also responsible for Faith, successful in the fillies’ Classic two years later, and the 1783 victor Maid Of The Oaks.

In 1801, Eleanor was the first horse to win The Derby and triumph in the Oaks the very next day. The filly’s trainer, Mr Cox, died shortly before both Classics and his last words were recorded as “Depend `on it, that Eleanor is a hell of a mare”.

Fully 56 years after Eleanor, Blink Bonny became the second filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double when she prevailed in 1857.

In 1902, Sceptre captured both the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket before finishing fourth in The Derby following an interrupted preparation. Trained by owner, journalist and adventurer Robert Sievier, the very talented filly returned to form with a resounding victory in the Oaks two days later. She went on to capture the St Leger, becoming the only horse to win four British Classics.

Pretty Polly triumphed on all nine of her starts as a two-year-old and started the 1904 campaign with victory in the 1,000 Guineas before going on to succeed in both the Oaks - when the shortest-priced winner ever at 8/100 - and the St Leger for the fillies’ Triple Crown One of the greatest-ever fillies, Pretty Polly was victorious 22 times from 24 races and had a huge impact on the thoroughbred in career as a broodmare.

Signorinetta became the third filly to complete the Derby-Oaks double in 1908, belying a starting price of 100/1 against the colts, while

Fifinella was the last filly to manage the Classic double in 1916, when both races were held at Newmarket due to the First World War.

Sun Chariot triumphed in the 1942 Oaks, run at Newmarket during World War II, despite giving the rest of the field a furlong start when slowly away. The filly, leased to the monarch King George VI for her racing career by the Irish National Stud, won both the 1,000 Guineas and the St Leger in impressive fashion to claim the fillies’ Triple Crown. This feat was emulated by Meld in 1955 and Oh So Sharp in 1985.

The 100/8 chance Carrozza, trained by Sir Noel Murless and partnered by Lester Piggott who had combined to win the Derby with Crepello two days beforehand, became the initial Classic winner for Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when successful in the 1957 renewal of the Oaks The Queen enjoyed a tremendous second Oaks success in her Silver Jubilee year of 1977, when Dunfermline triumphed before going on to win the final Classic, the St Leger.

There were emotional scenes in the winner’s enclosure in 2007 when the Ted Durcanridden Light Shift provided the late Sir Henry Cecil an eighth victory in the Oaks. The 2014 Oaks was run in memory of Sir Henry, one of British racing’s most influential and successful trainers of all time, who died on June 11, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.

In recent years, Enable was a brilliant winner in 2017 for John Gosden, Frankie Dettori and Khalid Abdullah. Her Epsom Downs success was the beginning of a five-race winning streak at Group One level in 2017 that included impressive victories in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, making her the first Oaks winner to land Europe’s premier all-aged race.

In 2018, Enable went on to win a second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe while she also became the first Oaks heroine to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf when successful at Churchill Downs in November. She also won the Ascot King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes a record three times in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Joey Sheridan positioned the daughter of Frankel on the inside rail, one behind leader Bloom, who set fair fractions throughout the contest She was caught a little short of room at the two-furlong pole when looking to make her challenge but Sheridan was patient and once the gap appeared, she showed an excellent turn of foot to move into the lead. Cameo took a marked step forward from her comeback run over a mile at the Curragh where she finished fifth. She didn’t look fully fit for that effort and had obviously come on plenty for that outing. In the final furlong she did edge slightly left under pressure but the manner of her four-and-a-half length victory would allow this minor negative to be overlooked Softening conditions would definitely play to her strengths and, while she is not the mount of Ryan Moore, there is plenty of reason to fancy her from an each-way perspective
