The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2024
Welcome to Epsom Downs this afternoon for our last raceday of the 2024 season, we’ve got 7 exciting races in store this afternoon for you this afternoon as we bring a fantastic 2024 to a close. We are very grateful to Betfred and the EBF for their support across this afternoon’s card Amongst the races this afternoon we’ve got the Betfred Derby ‘Wild Card’ EBF Conditions Stakes as our second race, with the winner getting an automatic entry into The 2025 Betfred Derby. We’ve also got the Betfred Apprentices’ Derby as our fourth race, which is a once-a-year opportunity for apprentice jockeys to experience the unique contours and undulations of our historic racecourse Despite the significant rain over the last few days the course is in great condition and will allow for some competitive, albeit wet, racing!
We’re also hosting our inaugural beer festival this afternoon in Oaks Hall, featuring an impressive selection of quality ales from Cask London, allowing everyone to indulge in diverse flavours while enjoying the exhilarating atmosphere of an exciting raceday. Don’t miss your complimentary beer glass upon exit as a memento of your day while they are available!
For the final time I hope you have a wonderful afternoon and thank you for all your support throughout this season. It’s been a fantastic year for Epsom Downs and I’ve got no doubt that next year will continue to be better, we hope to see you again soon If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask one of our helpful team members across the site.
Tom Sammes
Brian Finch General Manager Epsom Downs Chairman Epsom Downs
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETINGTUESDAY 22ND APRIL 2025
SPRING MEETING
Our season opener on Tuesday 22 April 2025 sees high-class, quality racing at Epsom Downs.
Whilst today we celebrate the end of another spectacular racing season at Epsom Downs, our happiness is tinged with sadness as it marks the final race day for General Manager Tom Sammes, who will be leaving Epsom and The Jockey Club in October for pastures new.
Tom could not have picked a more daunting time to take up his role at Epsom Downs, starting during the week of the 2023 Betfred Derby Festival Tom faced a swift track handover with his predecessor, the launch of a new sponsor in Betfred and of course, the looming train strikes that impacted our racegoer’s ability to get to the racecourse.
If we have learned anything about Tom during that challenging period, it is his amazing ability to remain calm, learn quickly, get the best out of people, and set high standards - traits he has demonstrated in abundance during his time at Epsom Downs Tom’s tenure has come to an end far sooner than we would have liked, but we can say with absolute conviction that Epsom Downs racecourse and the estate it supports are all significantly better for Tom’s hard work and efforts.
Please join me in wishing Tom and family, all the very best for their next chapter.
We wish you all much success and happiness, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Epsom Downs in the future.
Brian

Sir David Prosser Trophy to be awarded to most successful Epsom trainer
The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2024 racing season.
The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.
The award for the 2022/23 season was given to Adam West, with 20 winners across the 12 month period. He was closely followed in second by Michael Attwater, with 18 wins and in third was Simon Dow with 17 winners. The award was presented at the Epsom Owners & Trainers’ Ball in November 2023.
The 2023/24 award started on the 5th November last year, and current standings as of 29th September are:
The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2024 runs from 5th November 2023 to 4th November 2024.
Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.

PLAY SMARTER
HODLER ended his losing spell in emphatic fashion over this C&D 17 days ago, and given he retains plenty of handicap scope, a subsequent 6lb rise looks within his range. The selection may have most to fear from the last-time-out winning 3-y-os Miguel and Come On You Spurs.

At Epsom Downs Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to
British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
