OFFICIAL RACECARD - £3.00

TUESDAY 23 APRIL
OFFICIAL RACECARD - £3.00
We are absolutely delighted to welcome you back to Epsom Downs today for the launch of our 2024 season.
We’ve got a fantastic day of racing in store for you today with the feature race being the Betfred Blue Riband Trial at 2:45pm, which is not only worth £50,000 but is also one of only three races that offers the winner automatic entry into The Betfred Derby itself The card also boasts a number of valuable and competitive handicaps from which the winners are often horses to follow over the season.
We’ve been busy over the winter making a number of improvements to our racecourse, with detail on the stables investment on Page 8 of the racecard being one of the highlights. We’ve also launched our own vegetable garden, and for guests in our hospitality suites you may get a taste of our home-grown produce from the garden of the racecourse! The Betfred Derby Festival is now only 38 days away, and as you’ll see construction has already begun on site to build our temporary facilities. There are many new features this year, and if you haven’t secured your tickets yet I’d strongly recommend buying before the 30th April to secure the best price – it’s not one to miss!
I hope you have a fabulous day today, and please don’t hesitate to ask any of our staff if you have a question this afternoon. We’re delighted to have you back!

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.
Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2024 racing season.
The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.
The award for the 2022/23 season was given to Adam West, with 20 winners across the 12 month period. He was closely followed in second by Michael Attwater, with 18 wins and in third was Simon Dow with 17 winners. The award was presented at the Epsom Owners & Trainers’ Ball in November 2023.
The 2023/24 award started on the 5th November last year, and current standings as of 19th April are:
The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2024 runs from 5th November 2023 to 4th November 2024.
Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.
For more information on the trainers and training facilities at Epsom Downs please visit: www.jockeyclubestates.co.uk/epsom
It’s been 205 days since our last race here at Epsom, but we have been busy!
Behind the scenes we have been improving our facilities to give all stakeholders the best experience. One of the most important projects has been our stable yard, where we transformed the horse walk with a new continuous rubberised surface throughout the yard to improve the safety for our equine athletes
As part of this redevelopment, we have installed a new trot-up strip, which is part of an enhanced requirement from Racing’s Authorities to allow Veterinary Officers to carry out pre-race checks on horses in a controlled environment.
The aim is to ensure that all horses are in the best possible health following their journey to the racecourse – providing an additional layer of protection and further reducing the risk of avoidable injury.
Horse welfare is at the heart of everything we do here at Epsom, so we are really excited about the investment and the benefit to our athletes Horse Welfare is also the core of the future in our industry, with the recent launch of the HorsePWR campaign Thiscampaignisdesignedtoinformandpromotefactsaroundwelfare in our sport and the Thoroughbred, sharing information about their purpose, the lives they lead, and the high welfare & safety standards that underpin British racing. We highly recommend a visit to www.horsepwr.co.uk to find out more!

CHIEF LITTLE ROCK isn’t entered for the Derby but he sets a high standard for this race having finished second in the Beresford Stakes at the Curragh and Autumn Stakes at Newmarket Feigning Madness has the makings of a smart middle-distance performer so rates a big threat, while Arabic Legend is worth another chance for his new yard

DECLARED RUNNERS 13 2023: SIR RUMI (IRE) 5 9 9 William Buick 11-2 (Richard Hannon) 10 ran Tongue Strap worn by No 8. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 2, 9.
Running for the first time since Gelding No 5, 9, 12.
Stewards Note:
WYNTER WILDES: Following its run on 9/12/2023 it was reported that the horse ran flat.
VAYNOR: Following its run on 23/9/2023 it was reported that the horse would prefer a faster surface.
Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Champagne Piaff (FR), 6-1 The Goat (GB), 8-1 Hope You Can Run (IRE), 10-1 There’s The Door (IRE), 11-1 Splendent (IRE), 12-1 Vaynor (IRE), Western Stars (FR), 14-1 Duke of Verona (IRE), 18-1 Wynter Wildes (GB), 22-1 Greysful Storm (IRE), 25-1 Saratoga Gold (GB), 28-1 Think First (IRE), 66-1 Green Team (FR)
It’s likely that CHAMPAGNE PIAFF will be well found in the market with Ryan Moore booked on the back of an encouraging return from a monster absence at Bath. However, that’s just about the only negative mark against this lightly-raced 6-y-o, who was a winner here off this mark on his sole previous visit in September 2021 and he shaped at Bath as though this step back up in trip would be ideal. Splendent and Hope You Can Run are put forward as the main dangers given doubts surrounding The Goat.

At Epsom Downs Racecourse we believe racing should be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. And one thing is certainly true, the more relaxed and comfortable we feel, the more likely we are to have a great time. So that’s why we’ve created one very simple piece of guidance, to come “dressed to feel your best”. Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. So wear what feels right for you and will keep you feeling your best from start to finish, whatever the weather.
In the event of an emergency please be guided by our safety stewards and by the messages you will see and hear around the racecourse. We advise that you keep your personal belongings with you at all times
In the event of an evacuation please do not attempt to regain access to buildings to collect your personal belongings
If a total evacuation of the racecourse becomes necessary we will keep you updated on developments via our Public Address system The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Epsom Downs Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the Grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located at the Entrance Pavilion
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £68,636 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from September to December 2023.
All lost and found property is dealt with at the Queen’s Stand Security Desk or Entrance Pavilion All property found should be handed into one of these areas, and all enquiries about lost property should be made here also
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to
British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
