The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2023 racing season.
The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.
Adam West has top spot with 17 winners, followed by Michael Attwater on 16 and Simon Dow on 15 winners.
Standings as of 29 September 2023.
The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2023 runs from 5th November 2022 to 4th November 2023.
Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.

As the 2023 season draws to a close at Epsom Downs Racecourse this afternoon, it has been another year to remember
There was added significance at The Spring Meeting in April when a 52ft by 23ft artwork on the side of the Duchess Stand, depicting Frankie Dettori in the colours of his 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, was unveiled
Dettori, who had previously announced that 2023 would be his last year in the saddle, had no idea the bespoke and unique mural had been commissioned by The Jockey Club and created by leading street art specialist MurWalls He was left speechless when it was unveiled
He said: “It was a big surprise! I was quite embarrassed when I first saw it, actually I love it It is amazing, I’m gobsmacked really. Marc and the team at MurWalls have done a great job
“It’s the young me and the older me It was my biggest thrill in my racing career - the Derby in 2015 on Golden Horn I’m glad it is there forever now. It looks great
“I have mixed feelings It’s the end of an era, and it’s nice to be recognised with something as big as this Epsom is a special place for me I’ve had some great memories, lots of nice winners
“To be honoured with something like this at one of the most famous racetracks in the world is quite something.”
Frankie was out of luck in his attempt to win a third Betfred Derby as his mount, the 4-1 Favourite Arrest, could only muster 10th The winner, Auguste Rodin, handed his trainer Aidan O’Brien a record-extending ninth success in the premier Classic.
Sired by leading Japanese stallion Deep Impact and out of 2017 Oaks runner-up Rhododendron, Auguste Rodin came out on top after wearing down King Of Steel in the final furlong to win by half a length in the hands of Ryan Moore, who was riding his third Derby winner.
Even if Frankie couldn’t end his riding days at Epsom Downs with a dream third Betfred Derby winner, he did enjoy a Group One double 24 hours earlier on Ladies Day courtesy of Soul Sister in the Betfred Oaks and Emily Upjohn in the DahlBury Coronation Cup Both horses were trained by John and Thady Gosden
The 52 year old Italian also recorded a victory on his very last ride at Epsom Downs when Prosperous Voyage landed Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes on Derby Day.
Dettori said afterwards: “I feel good I’m relaxed. I’m a bit disappointed about the Derby, but to finish on a winner after over 30 years riding here is brilliant
“I’m going to enjoy it and I’m going to eat a bit of grass from the winner’s enclosure I think I own it!”

Australian-born Stanley Wootton arrived in Epsom as a boy in 1906 with his racehorse trainer father Richard and the rest of his family.
He first took out a training licence in Epsom in 1915 before serving in the Battle of the Somme, earning the Military Cross.
His entire training career took place in Epsom, finally retiring in 1962. Not only did he train numerous big race winners on the flat and over jumps, he was also renowned as a great mentor of apprentice jockeys, including Charlie Smirke and Frenchie Nicholson.
In 1926 Wootton purchased the Six Mile Hill gallops on Walton Downs from the Epsom Grand Stand Association for £35,000, and at the same time took a lease on the Winter/Epsom Downs gallops in the centre of the racecourse.
In 1967 Wootton gave the gallops at Epsom to the Horserace Betting Levy Board on a 999 year lease, thus helping to secure the long term future of the training industry at Epsom

NAXOS is on the up and might get his own way in front, so he’s preferred to Terwada (engaged Newmarket Saturday) who shaped nicely in a competitive event at York last time. Burglar is another one with potential and a case can be made for all of the remainder

This year sees Epsom Downs’ Season Finale take place on the same day as Europe’s most valuable all-aged race – the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in France.
Staged over a mile and a half, there is a strong link between the French Group One and the three Group One races staged over the same distance at Epsom Downs
Indeed, the last time the Season Finale and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe took place on the same day in 2017, it was the great Enable who came out on top in Paris Enable became the first Oaks winner to go on to Arc success in the same season and went on to annex the Arc again in 2018
Two horses fly the flag for Epsom Downs in the 2023 Arc – Hukum and Westover.
Hukum won the Group One Dahlbury Coronation Cup impressively at The Derby Festival in 2022 and is unbeaten in two starts in 2023
Shadwell’s homebred six year old will be bidding to follow in the footsteps of Tantieme, Nuccio, Ballymoss, Exbury, Mill Reef and Rainbow Quest – all of whom won both the Arc and Coronation Cup during their careers
Westover has very good form at Epsom Downs, coming home a fastfinishing third in the 2022 Derby and runner-up in this year’s Dahlbury Coronation Cup He will be attempting to improve on his sixth in last year’s Arc behind Alpinista, who herself won at Epsom Downs on her debut back in 2019
ARC WINNERS WHO ALSO WON THE DERBY
Golden Horn (2015), Workforce (2010), Sea The Stars (2009), Sinndar (2000), Lammtarra (1995), Mill Reef (1971), Sea-Bird (1965)
ARC WINNERS WHO ALSO WON THE OAKS
Enable (2017, 2018)
ARC WINNERS WHO ALSO WON THE CORONATION CUP
Tantieme (1951), Nuccio (1952), Ballymoss (1958), Exbury (1963), Mill Reef (1971) and Rainbow Quest (1985)
NB: All won the Coronation Cup and Arc in the same season expect Mill Reef, who won the Arc as a three year old in 1971 and the Coronation Cup as a four year old in 1972

OVERNIGHT OATS finished just behind Shot of Love over C&D last month but the Muir & Grassick gelding is slightly better off at the weights this time and is narrowly fancied to turn the tables Shot of Love made full use of an uncontested lead on that occasion but is clearly in top form and should prove a stern rival forthe selection once more, whilst Hi Clare also ran well over C&D last time and merits respect.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to
British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
