Sir David Prosser Trophy

to be awarded to most successful Epsom trainer

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2023 racing season.

The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.

Michael Attwater has the top spot with 12 winners, followed closely by Simon Dow on 11 and Adam West on 9 winners.

Standings as of 2nd August 2023.

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2023 runs from 5th November 2022 to 4th November 2023.

Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.

For more information on the trainers and training facilities at Epsom Downs please visit: www.jockeyclubestates.co.uk/epsom

The British EBF will allocate £2 million to prize money in 2023, thanks to the contributions of our British Stallion studs:

SERIOUS LOOK got back on track after a breathing operation when fifth at Yarmouth last time and he has the potential to do better with cheekpieces applied back up in trip Desfondado is a danger following his clear-cut C&D win recently and Cobalt Blue can’t be ruled out.

Tommy Harrigan was a highly valued and extremely experienced horseman, who for most of his adult life was Assistant to Simon Dow at Clear Height Stables in Epsom.

He had grown up in Langley Vale and was the grandson of a hugely respected horseman, Tommy Lee, who whilst working for John Sutcliffe Jr, looked after the dual Guineas winner, Right Tack. Tommy worked at the local stables of Michael Attwater, before moving to Newmarket where he held an Apprentice Licence and rode a winner in 2014. He later returned to Epsom where he joined Clear Height that Summer

He was well respected, and many of the jockeys riding today got to know him well, with Eoin Walsh sending a text last year saying: “It seems like only yesterday we were doing our apprentice course together in 2013. Thanks to Tommy it was not nearly as dull as it should have been. He always had a way of lighting up the dullest of rooms.”

It is a wonderful tribute but only tells a bit of the story as Tommy impacted so many of our lives, from his close family and friends to people he only met once. He had a natural way with people and life to him was pure theatre. He also had a wonderful sense of humour and in a competitive sport like horseracing, you need someone to keep you smiling.

Tommy saw the good in everybody and although he was a very strong character and could be outspoken, he spoke from the heart.

Tommy’s horsemanship skills were considerable and a great asset to any stable He had a great eye for a horse at the sales and also on the gallops. He would notice the things that might be glossed over or appear to have no value but were so significant in that horse’s career

It goes without saying that he is enormously missed and has left a massive hole in our hearts and lives. He taught us, among many things, that life must be lived because it is often too short, and that family and friends must be treasured.

Today we will continue to celebrate Tommy’s life at his home track and at a sport that he loved with so much passion.

OPTIVA STAR is on a handy mark and would have gone close with a clear run at Lingfield last time, so he’s worth taking a chance on for all that Twilight Dancer was a comfortable winner over C&D last time. Lahina Bay had been in good form prior to an excusable run 16 days ago, so she’s also worth respect.
