Sir David Prosser Trophy

to be awarded to most successful Epsom trainer

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2023 racing season.

The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020.

Simon Dow leads the way so far with 9 winners.

Standings as of 21st April 2023.

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2023 runs from 5th November 2022 to 4th November 2023.

Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future.

PLAY SMARTER

DIG TWO made an excellent start for his new trainer when third under Oisin Murphy in a stronger race at Kempton a fortnight ago and he could be the way to go from the same mark. Kape Moss was value for extra for her taking Southwell victory and is feared most. Lihou, having a belated first start at Epsom, is also interesting

DIGITAL SOLUTIONS

WEATHERBYS DIGITAL SOLUTIONS BLUE RIBAND TRIAL

The second race on today’s card is the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Blue Riband Trial, a Listed contest over an extended 10 furlongs, in which six three-year-olds go to post.

The Harry Eustace-trained Cite d’Or is the sole filly among the half-dozen and the daughter of Galiway is the only runner in the field to have been in action this year. Following a busy juvenile campaign, she ran twice in Meydan and more recently, finished last of eight in a Group 3 contest at Saint-Cloud. Whilst she holds a fitness edge on her five rivals, it will still be a surprise if she proved up to landing this valuable prize.

The winner of another Weatherbys-sponsored contest on debut, at Newmarket’s July meeting last summer, Epictetus sets the standard for John & Thady Gosden. The Kingman colt went on to finish a neck behind Silver Knott (subsequently finished a nose second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf) in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes and then finished runner-up behind 2000 Guineas and Derby favourite, Auguste Rodin, in the Group 1 Vertem Futurity at Doncaster last October

Whilst he had little chance with the winner in the closing stages, he ran on well and both running style and pedigree would suggest that this longer trip should suit as a three-year-old. Interestingly, John Gosden and Frankie Dettori teamed up to win this race in four successive years between 2016 and 2019 – including with Cracksman in 2017 – and in total, the trainer has won the Blue Riband on six occasions since 2007. Epictetus would appear to set a very good standard and is likely to prove difficult to beat.

Andrew Balding’s Stormbuster finished last of eight in the Doncaster Group 1 and has 8¼ lengths to make up with Epictetus. He had earlier won a conditions event at Newbury, when he was allowed to dominate from the front. Having won just once from five starts at two, the Dubawi colt needs to take a big step forward.

Think First won a brace of Chelmsford novice contests last season and proved his stamina over this trip on the second of those occasions. Rated just 92, he is another who looks to face a stiff task.

The least-exposed pairing in the field are Hadrianus and Intricacy, with both shedding their respective maiden tags on their second and final starts at two. The former belied odds of 50-1 when shaping with considerable promise at Newcastle in November and soon went one better, when successful over 1m3f at Kempton. Visibility was pretty poor that evening, but the Galileo colt came out of the mist in control of the race and stayed on really strongly. He looks to be a typically tough runner from the stable of Charlie & Mark Johnston, but probably only ran to mark in the low-mid 80s at Kempton, so again, needs to have improved considerably over the winter. Given the fact that he has run just twice, there is every chance that improvement is forthcoming.

Likewise, Intricacy ran just twice an all-weather surface, for Simon & Ed Crisford. Runner-up on debut at Wolverhampton, the Dubawi colt returned to the same venue to win in mid-December and the placed horses won three times between them subsequently. The third was well-beaten off a mark of 90 at the Craven meeting, however, so similar comments apply, in that plenty of improvement is required if he is to challenge Epictetus.

PLAY SMARTER

A dual winner on all-weather last year, NEANDRA shaped betterthan the distance beaten suggests when finishing midfield in a stronger race over further at York in October and, from what rates a workable mark, she earns the vote to come out on top returned to action. Kempton eye-catcher Open Champion similarly remains low-mileage and he’s feared, along with Lingfield-scorer Wonder Starelzaam and Sir Rumi.

STEPHEN WALLIS – A TRUE LOVE FOR THE SPORT AND THE PEOPLE WITHIN IT –A LOVE & A LEGACY THAT LASTS FOREVER

Next week The Jockey Club will bid a fond farewell to one of its most loyal, longstanding and integral team members, Stephen Wallis

From a racing family, steeped in racing heritage, his father Tommy was the Managing Director of Racecourse Holdings Trust and a leading figure in forming The Jockey Club of today and in saving the Grand National and Aintree Racecourse Stephen, having started out working in advertising, financial services and even setting up a private postal service was set to continue the family legacy.

Always a tremendous enthusiast of the turf, the lure of continuing the family tradition and working in racing proved too strong and Stephen would go to become managing director of two of The Jockey Club’s most iconic Flat racing venues

Epsom Downs and Newmarket Racecourses.

During his 14 years at Epsom Downs up to 2007, Stephen’s irascible enthusiasm and unwavering commitment saw The Derby thrive in its position as the worlds most famous flat race and move successfully to its current Saturday slot in 1995

He made the move to the Home of Horseracing in 2007 and successfully guided Newmarket into a new era. His time at Newmarket reached a fitting climax when the mighty Frankel cemented his unbeatable position as the worlds best thoroughbred in the 2011 QIPCO 2000 Guineas

Since 2012, Stephen has been the man to represent The Jockey Club around the world in his role as Group Director of International and Racing Relations. From Europe, the Americas to the Middle East, Asia and Australasia, Stephen has more than ably represented The Jockey Club on the international stage and forged deep, long-lasting relationships which have proved a great help in securing sponsorship deals. On home turf he has invested a significant amount of passion and time in his quest to work with the industry to improve the experience for all. He has led improved owner and trainer experience, as well as the introduction of complimentary meals for all racing staff. Stephen has also been instrumental in the creation and ongoing success of the Henry Cecil Newmarket Open Weekend, which continues to go from strength to strength

Throughout his time working at The Jockey Club, Stephen was a familiar sight on the racecourse and as he once remarked, he was very much hands on in his approach to working through the constant challenges of holding a senior position in racing

STEPHEN WALLIS

He said: “I love going racing and I find that more problems are solved leaning on a rail looking at a horse in the paddock than through any amount of emails and meetings.”

In an interview with Alan Lee, the late and much-missed racing correspondent of The Times, Stephen remarked: “Racedays are like a theatrical production to me.”

Those who have met Stephen would almost certainly concur that Stephen has had a significant impact in shaping the fabric of our sport and the experiences that racecourses deliver to all customers. They will also cite extraordinary kindness and being one of those people that always had time for everyone

Alongside his extraordinary dedication to the Jockey Club, horseracing and all the people within it, Stephen is a committed, much loved family man. Sophie, Mikey, Tarzie, Lulu and Emsie are all immensely proud of him and how he has carried himself throughout his time at The Jockey Club Sophie said “he values integrity and kindness and believes you should have a bit of fun along the way. He has built strong international relationships but has always had time for his colleagues and made an effort to ensure that he visited them regularly to ensure their wellbeing”

Sophie went on to say “Like modern day working families, his job meant that he missed various family events but he always tried to make up for it Even to the point, on the Sunday after the Derby undertook to tackle the garden at home, obviously exhausted but felt guilty at not being at home in the build-up to the event and wanted to show his commitment to his family and the family home”.

Thank you Stephen, The Jockey Club, the sport and everyone within it is immensely grateful for everything that you have done during your 30 year tenure The love and passion is palpable and we are committed to building on your legacy. This is not goodbye but it is a BIG THANK YOU.

Enjoy making precious memories going forwards doing all the things you love – your family, Arsenal FC, horseracing, Swinley Forest Golf Club and lets not forget – The Garden.
