EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Epsom Downs for our Season Finale, our last meeting of 2022

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for today, the Federation of Bloodstock Agents for their generous support. The last of our ‘Derby’s’ take place today, the Darby Dennis Apprentices’ Derby Handicap at 3.25pm. This race is limited to jockeys who have not ridden more than 95 winners and is run over the full Derby course of 1 mile and 4 furlongs. This year we are delighted to re-name the race after Darby Dennis, who is sadly leaving the Epsom Downs Committee after 12 years.

The second race on today’s card is the Derby ‘Wild Card’ EBF Conditions Stakes. This is a chance for a two year old to win a ‘Wild Card’ entry into the 2023 Derby on Saturday 3rd June 2023

Looking back, it has been an excellent 2022 season, from the Cazoo Derby in June, won by Desert Crown giving jockey Richard Kingscote his first win in the Classic, to our Thursday music nights which took a trip through the decades We’ve enjoyed welcoming racegoers to all our various meetings and hope you’ve enjoyed your time with us

With our season drawing to a close we are looking ahead to the 2023 Season, with the highlight of our year, Ladies Day on Friday 2nd June, followed by the Derby on Saturday 3rd June. You can sign up to be the first to know when tickets are on sale via our website, or book your hospitality spaces now.

I do hope you have a very enjoyable afternoon with us, and I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES THE RIO FERDINAND FOUNDATION TO EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE

“Day in, day out we work with community centres, education providers and a whole host of industries with the goal of helping young people realise their true potential and it’s fantastic that we’re now able to do the same in horseracing through this collaboration with The Jockey Club.”

The Jockey Club the largest employer in British horseracing announced in June 2022 that it has teamed up with the charity to give young people from some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities the chance to learn more about the sport as a pastime and an industry they can work in

Today’s visit is designed to educate 16 to 24 year olds about the sport as part of a series of racecourse visits and open days, with The Jockey Club showcasing the wide variety of employment which horseracing offers, from sales and IT through to turf management and operational roles.

Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United footballer who played 81 times for England, is founder of the youth and community development charity.

He said: “I’m really excited that we’re going to be working with The Jockey Club to demonstrate to so many young people everything horseracing has to offer, both as a career path and a sport.

“Ten years ago we set up the Rio Ferdinand Foundation with the aim of supporting and empowering 16 to 24 year olds from some of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities, whilst also tackling racism and inequality head on

“Ever since then we’ve helped thousands of young people through education and employment, opening their eyes to the opportunities that are out there and helping them make the most of the skills and talent they have

Nevin Truesdale, Chief Executive of The Jockey Club, added: “We want young people and people from all backgrounds to look on horseracing as a sport and an industry which is full of opportunities for them

“My colleagues across The Jockey Club come from a significant range of backgrounds and this initiative will help highlight that it’s not essential to want to work directly with animals or to have a racing background to have a career in the sport.

“We’re just as passionate about the work the Rio Ferdinand Foundation is doing in the community as those who have helped make it the huge success it is today.”

Other partners involved in the #NotBoxed initiative investing in young people's skills and future pathways include Warner Music UK, The Gym Group, multi-media entertainment brand KISS and the Guinness Partnership and their suppliers in the construction industry

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME THE RIO FERDINAND FOUNDATION TO EPSOM DOWNS TODAY AS PART OF THE EXCITING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE JOCKEY CLUB AND THE RIO FERDINAND FOUNDATION #NOTBOXED PROGRAMME.

1926-2022

Racing and royalty have been intertwined throughout the sport’s history, but never as closely and as intimately as during the lifetime of Queen Elizabeth II. Only her great grandfather, Edward VII, comes close to matching her level of enthusiasm.

Horses and in particular, racehorses were her passion, ranking closely behind “country, Commonwealth and family,” as Brough Scott put it in a programme about her wide-ranging equine interests. Within the racing and bloodstock worlds she was greatly respected as an instinctive horsewoman with a superb depth of knowledge of all aspects of the industry, and through the obvious delight she took in victories on the track, the wider public glimpsed what Sir Peter O’Sullevan called “the very human being” her racing friends knew her to be.

On becoming Queen in 1952, she inherited the Royal Studs and her father’s bloodstock interests, but she had already tasted success as an owner she had her first runner when she was 23 in October 1949, when Astrakhan, given to her as a foal as a wedding present by the Aga Khan, finished second at Ascot. In April the following year the filly became the then Princess Elizabeth’s first winner, at Hurst Park, and the only one to carry her own registered silks of scarlet, purple hooped sleeves and black cap, rather than the royal colours. The Queen enjoyed over 500 winners as an owner

As Queen, significant success on the racecourse came quickly; King George VI had bred a colt called Aureole, runner-up in the Derby in her coronation year of 1953, and the following year winner of Ascot’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes named after her parents and the Coronation Cup at Epsom. The Queen was champion owner in 1953 and again in 1957 and, after being sent to stud at Wolferton, Aureole was leading sire in 1960 and 1961.

The first of The Queen’s five British Classic winners arrived in 1957, when the Noel Murless-trained Carrozza, whom she had leased from The National Stud, took the Oaks by a short-head under Lester Piggott. A year later her home-bred Pall Mall, trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Doug Smith, won the 2000 Guineas.

While the Royal colours were carried to victory by plenty of good horses in the 1960s, including the 1961 Coronation Stakes winner Aiming High and Hopeful Venture, who took the 1968 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, it wasn’t until 1974 that The Queen enjoyed further Classic triumph with Highclere like Aureole, a descendant of the outstanding broodmare Feola, bought and raced by George V. Highclere, trained by Major Dick Hern and ridden by Joe Mercer, won the 1000 Guineas by a short-head from Polygamy, and then the Prix de Diane the French Oaks by two lengths.

In 1977, the year of her silver jubilee, Major Hern handled a second Classic winner for The Queen when Dunfermline scored in The Oaks, staying on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length under Willie Carson, who later that season rode her to beat Alleged and Lester Piggott in the St Leger. She was the champion three-year-old filly in Europe that year

HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II

Although The Queen enjoyed many more successes in major races, including 23 Royal Ascot winners headed by Estimate in the 2013 Gold Cup, of whom there is a huge sculpture at Sandringham House the Derby continued to elude her In 2011 all the pre-race publicity surrounded the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Carlton House, given to her by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed. The colt was sent off the 5/2 favourite for the world’s most famous Flat race under Ryan Moore but could only finish third.

Undoubtedly a source of great pleasure to The Queen and her primary leisure activity, her racing and breeding operation was, however, also a commercial one, and in 1982 the top-class filly Height Of Fashion a daughter of Highclere was sold to Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum for £1.2million and went on to produce the 1989 2000 Guineas, Derby and Coral-Eclipse winner, Nashwan and four-time G1 scorer Nayef.

Flat racing and breeding was The Queen’s love, but she appreciated Jump racing as well. She and her mother Queen Elizabeth shared the ownership of Monaveen, who gave her a first winner over fences at Fontwell in October 1949, and she inherited her mother’s jumps horses on the Queen Mother’s death in 2001. She continued to own a handful of horses under that code, and scored a first winner at Cheltenham with the Nicky Henderson-trained Sunshade in April 2019.

John Warren was her bloodstock and racing advisor from 2001, when he took over from his father-in-law, The Queen’s childhood friend Lord Carnarvon, who had held the reins since 1969.

She took great joy in spending time with her horses, at the Royal Studs and at their training yards, to which she was a relaxed and frequent visitor Her horses are foaled at Sandringham, and go as yearlings to Polhampton Stud near Newbury before joining one of her trainers, who recently included Sir Michael Stoute, John & Thady Gosden, Richard Hannon, Andrew Balding, Michael Bell, Harry & Roger Charlton, William Haggas, Clive Cox, Nicky Henderson, Jamie Snowden and Gai Waterhouse in Australia.

She was a patron of both The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. The Queen also received two of the most prestigious awards in racing, taking the Cartier Millennium Award of Merit in 2000, and the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust Award in 2002

The Queen’s involvement in the horse world stretched far beyond racing. As well as thoroughbreds, she bred Highland ponies, Cleveland Bays, polo ponies and sports horses including Doublet, who carried her daughter Princess Anne to victory in the 1971 European Eventing Championships.

2022 AT EPSOM DOWNS

From breath-taking performances to poignant successes, the 2022 campaign at Epsom Downs has been one to remember ahead of the curtain coming down on what has been another fantastic season of racing at the world-famous venue on Sunday 25th September,

Back where it all began in April the Listed Cazoo Blue Riband Trial, which is the first recognised trial for the Cazoo Derby, served up a thriller with the Charlie Appleby trained Nahanni edging out Grand Alliance and Zain Sarinda in a pulsating threeway finish

It was then on to The Cazoo Derby, which formed part of the official celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II The Royal party, which included The Princess Royal, was greeted by the amazing sight of 40 jockeys, past and present, wearing the Royal silks and forming a guard of honour For the first time since 2019 capacity crowds were welcomed back for the two-day meeting, which got underway with a minute’s applause for nine-times Derby winning rider Lester Piggott who sadly passed away aged 86 on May 29

One man who will remember the meeting more than most is trainer Owen Burrows who secured his first Group One victory with Hukum in the DahlBury Coronation Cup.

The son of 2009 Derby hero Sea The Stars finally gained the top level success he had long threatened when defeating last year’s Coronation Cup hero Pyledriver by a resounding four and a quarter lengths.

Moments of drama often come in the biggest races and this year’s Cazoo Oaks was no exception.

All eyes were focused on impressive Musidora winner Emily Upjohn, however after making a slow start the 6-4 favourite was unable to quite reel in Tuesday, who provided trainer Aidan O’Brien with a record-breaking 41st British Classic success

Outside of the Group One prizes a special mention goes to Epsom based trainer Laura Mongan who finally celebrated a winner at her home town track after Bowman sprung an 80-1 surprise in the Cazoo Derby Festival Handicap

The decibel levels increased 24 hours later as the roof was raised following the emphatic success of Desert Crown in the 2022 Cazoo Derby, which was a sixth in the world’s most famous Flat race for Sir Michael Stoute and a first for winning rider Richard Kingscote.

Entering the mile and a half contest with a perfect record after following up his debut success at Nottingham with victory in the Dante Stakes at York the son of was sent off the 5-2 favourite to add to that tally which he proceeded to do in the manner of a high-class colt

Moving strongly into contention under Kingscote, who was having just his second ride in the race, Desert Crown moved through the gears in impressive fashion before crossing the line two and a half lengths clear of Hoo Ya Mal to the delight of the majority packed in the stands.

After the buzz of the Derby it was the turn of the female amateur riders to enjoy a moment centre stage over the very same course and distance in the Coral “Get Closer To The Action” Ladies’ Derby Handicap which was claimed by Becky Smith and Miss Mulligan.

Bank Holiday Monday in August saw the turn of the gentleman amateur riders receive their chance of ‘Derby’ success in the Garden Cider Amateurs’ Derby Handicap, which this year was won by Daniel Kyne aboard the Charlie Hillstrained Saratoga Gold.

While the victory provided a first win under rules for Kyne it also proved to be a poignant success for the triumphant rider whose brother, and former jockey, Jamie Kyne died in a flat fire in September 2009

It was then on to the Bohle Jump Jockeys Derby Handicap, which fittingly was run in weather more likely to be found at a midwinter card at Wincanton than an autumn afternoon at the iconic Surrey venue.

Having endured several luckless spins around the track during a brief stint as a flat jockey Brendan Powell was not to be denied a first winner on this occasion when teaming up with local trainer Jim Boyle to strike gold with Bad Company.

And that brings us to this afternoon’s meeting which while will bring an end to racing at the track in 2022 could potentially unearth a Classic contender for next year in the Derby ‘Wild Card’ EBF Conditions Stakes, so it is a case of watch this space.

PLAY SMARTER

This looks wide-open but WODETON is one who has already fully confirmed his effectiveness around here and, with the step back up in trip expected to suit on the back of a good third over 7f here 4 weeks ago, he could be the way to go There doesn’t appear to be a massive amount of pace on though, and Tribal Wisdom may prove difficult to dislodge if granted his own way on the front end back from a break/now handicapping. Tickets completes the shortlist.
