PROSSER TROPHY TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER
The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Adam West leads the way with 24 winners so far. Michael Attwater is his closest pursuer in second place with 17 winners. Jim Boyle has raced into third with 3 recent winners bringing his total to 13, overtaking Brett Johnson who has 12. Standings as of 26th August 2022.

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2022 racing season.
The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2022 runs from 5th November 2021 to 4th November 2022. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. John also worked tirelessly representing the Epsom training industry on numerous bodies and projects for many years. He was an Epsom and Walton Downs Conservator, and in that role devoted a huge amount of time and effort to what ultimately became The Epsom and Walton Downs Regulation Act of 1984, which gives the legislative framework to so many of the activities on the Downs.
John Benstead trained in the Epsom area throughout his long an illustrious career initially in Ashtead in 1954, and for the bulk of his training life from The Limes in Shepherd’s Walk until his retirement in 1998.

Born in Fulham, Mick Haynes was the last apprentice signed by Epsom trainer and landowner Stanley Wootton. He rode on the Flat and over Jumps, gaining the biggest of over 100 winners when winning the 1955 Imperial Cup at Sandown Park for Wootton on ‘Bon Mot II’. Mick took out a trainer’s licence from Tattenham Corner Stables in 1974 and his first winner came the following year with ‘Some Jewel’ at Windsor His two best horses were ‘Popsi’s Joy’, winner of the 1980 Cesarewitch and 17 races in total, and the Group 3-winning sprinter Vorvados, on both of whom Lester Piggott excelled.

Terry started his working life in the scrap metal business in South London and built his company into one of the largest waste disposal businesses in the country
His first major win came with Bobzao in the 1994 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and in 2002 he won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Where Or When.

John trained Group and Listed race winners as well as numerous major handicaps, including the 2002 Wokingham at Royal Ascot with Capricho John was always a great supporter of Epsom as both a racecourse and training centre and was Chairman of the Epsom Trainers Association at the time of his sad passing in March 2012.
Previously a racehorse owner, Terry took out a trainer’s licence in 1993 and trained throughout his career from Loretta Lodge in Headley.
John rode winners as an Amateur Jockey before first taking out a licence to train in 1990 from South Hatch Stables in Epsom. He moved to Lambourn for several years before returning to Epsom to take over when his father retired.
MILLS 1939-2010
John spent his entire life amongst racehorses. He was head lad before becoming assistant to his father Reg where he learnt first-hand his father’s talent for preparing horses for big handicaps.
Top handicappers from the yard included Norton who won the 2002 Royal Hunt Cup Terry improved the facilities and gallops at Loretta Lodge and invested considerably in well-bred horses.
