Focus On... GALVIN
Galvin looks a strong favourite in the feature race, the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, and can put his stamina to good use.
A winner on his first start under Rules in a bumper at Roscommon, there was clear signs of ability straight away when he bolted home by seven and a half lengths under Lisa O’Neill. Galvin then went on to land his next 4 starts, with three of them coming over hurdles, before contesting the Ballymore at Cheltenham, running a respectable sixth of 16 under Day Russell.
After a quiet season in 2019/2020, it was the next year that really excelled Galvin as a force over fences and prove a valuable in-mate to Gordon Elliott’s yard. A brilliant novice, he made it a perfect five out of 5 over fences, including the National Hunt Challenge Cup at The Festival™, when trained by Ian Ferguson.
Last season saw the magnificent chaser take a further step forward, landing a Grade 3 at Punchestown, shortly followed by the Grade 1Savills Chase at Leopardstown. Sent off second favourite for the Gold Cup, he ran a very respectable race in fourth, and may have found the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup too much shortly after.
He could be a horse to keep on side with again this season and could get favourite backers back on cloud nine in this race.
Quote Marks
“Galvin ran a blinder. He just lacks that little bit of gear. He stayed on well and gave us everything”
Davy Russell speaking about Galvin after his Gold Cup run last season at Cheltenham.
What’s In The Name?
Running in our first is Uberrima Fides for trainer S R B Crawford.
It’s literal translation from Latin is ‘Utmost good faith’. Will the unraced three-year-old repay the faith of those who back him today?

GORDON ELLIOTT GALVIN DAVY RUSSELL
Davy Russell ACareer In Profile
Davy Russell grew up on his parent`s farm in County Cork, one of six siblings, and all he dreamt of was riding horses and becoming a successful jockey.
He began riding in point-to-points, whilst juggling a job in a fish factory, and rode his first winner in Ireland in 1999. He rode his first race at the Cheltenham Festival as an amateur in 2000, finishing sixth in the Kim Muir for Ferdy Murphy. The favourite in that race, who was brought down, was ridden by none other than Gordon Elliott. Nobody watching the race that day could have imagined the partnership that would later be formed between the two, winning the biggest races together in both Britain and Ireland.
Russell moved to England in 2002 to join Ferdy Murphy, and rode his first winner as a professional at Sedgefield, but would return to his home country after spending two seasons in the UK. He would spend time with horseracing legend Edward O`Grady and also as a freelance jockey but would ultimately land his big job when named the retained jockey for the powerful Gigginstown House Stud in 2007.
The famous maroon and white silks would give Russell some of his best days in the saddle, riding into the winners’ enclosure on a long list of equine superstars such as Sir Des Champs, Apple’s Jade, Don Cossack and many more. None more renowned though than Tiger Roll, the dual Grand National hero, who Russell would partner to glory in the race the world is watching.
Russell has proved himself to be one of Ireland’s top jockeys for the past two decades, and collected the Irish Jockeys` Championship in consecutive years in 2012 and 2013 He is also fourth in the all-time list for Cheltenham Festival winners, notching up 25 in his illustrious career. The highlight of them all though is no doubt his dramatic, battling win on Lord Windermere in the Gold Cup that still lives long in the memory.
A true testament to the character of Davy Russell, though, has been his return from a shocking fall in the 2020 Munster National. Many jockeys, especially given all Russell has already achieved in the game, may have contemplated retirement in this moment but not Davy Russell. He couldn’t give up the game he loves and returned to the saddle after eleven months on the sidelines. It was clear he hadn’t lost a step in his rehabilitation either, as he returned with magnificent victories in the Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup within two months of his long-awaited return.
Russell had two winners at the meeting here last year, aboard Hollow Games and Fil Dor, and has a good record here at Down Royal that he will be looking to add to this weekend. He landed today’s showpiece Ladbrokes Champion Chase back in 2011 aboard Quito De La Roque in a vintage renewal, outstaying that year’s Champion Chase winner Sizing Europe on the run-in.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE
Win: COUGAR
Next Best: Old Victoria
COUGAR made a pleasing start for Padraig Roche when scoring by half a length on his hurdling bow at Gowran Park last month and looks set to follow that up, despite having to shoulder a penalty. He is related to some smart Flat types and can give another good account, as can Old Victoria, who has shown plenty on both career starts this year New Year Honours could also be in the mix.
BEST TURNED OUT
Ladbrokes & Down Royal Racecourse are pleased to sponsor the Best Turned Out prize for today’s races.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE
Win: FOXFIRE GLOW
Next Best: Themanintheboots
Gordon Elliott won this last year with subsequent Grade 1 scorer Mighty Potter and he could have another smart performer on his hands with French recruit FOXFIRE GLOW. Narrowly denied at Compiegne on his latest start, the son of Vadamos can gain compensation at the main expense of stablemate Themanintheboots, who performed creditably in bumpers during the summer. Owner J P McManus has a strong hand in this contest and his newcomers Hands Of Gold and Invictus Machin must also enter calculations.

Fact File Leading Trainer
Just like the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, Paul Nicholls also excels in this contest too. With 7 victories in 18 renewals, his success at Down Royal is almost something of a miracle for a British trainer. He won back-to-back renewals with Cristal Bonus (2012) and Rolling Aces (2013), with his lastest win coming with odds-on shot Ptit Zig (2015). Noel Meade has been the trainer to follow recently with Disko (2017) and Snow Falcon (2018) and is also worth noting.
Leading Jockey
With Nicholls often changing his rider, there is no standout jockey in this race. Barry Geraghty is no stranger to the Winners’ Enclosure and has been successful twice in this race, winning on Spendour (2003) in the first ever renewal and In Compliance (2006). Another retired face, Ruby Walsh makes his way onto list with two wins, matched by Sean Flanagan who is without a ride this year.
Today’s Runners &Riders
Although only four runners head down to the start, it looks an exciting, tactical and thrilling race on paper. All relatively unexposed over fences, Fury Road must give weight to all his other 3 rivals but there is no doubt he is the class act of the field. From one end of the weights to the other, the mare Delvino could make use of her weight under Darragh O’Keefe. Paul Townend is back in action for Willie Mullins on Fighter Allen and that pair can never be dismissed, while Gavin Cromwell saddles Vanillier who also has leading claims in this field, albeit having a penalty.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE
Win: NIBIRU Next Best: Pinkerton
There could be more to come from Pinkerton now entering the handicap ranks, while Charli Parcs and Ebasari should appreciate this drop in trip after running better than the bare form at Punchestown. However, NIBIRU shaped like a horse who had a fair bit in hand when winning at Navan and the Tony Martin inmate could make light of an 8lb rise. Pats Choice ran with promise when second on his handicap debut and may give the selection most to think about.

Gordon Elliott ACareer In Profile
Unlike many in the industry, Gordon Elliott hailed from no racing background, or a family steeped in racing history but is in fact a great example of someone who has made his own way in the sport. His introduction to racing came when working weekends and summers for Tony Martin, who had stables near Elliott’s childhood home in County Meath.
A young Gordon Elliott was gripped immediately by the world of racing and would take out an amateur riding license at the age of 16, going on to ride 200 point-to-point winners as well as 46 racecourse victories, mainly for Tony Martin in Ireland and Martin Pipe in England. He enjoyed his first success on the racecourse in a Ballinrobe bumper, but the highlight would no doubt be landing the lucrative Punchestown Champion Bumper in 1998 aboard King’s Road for Nigel Twiston-Davies.
Elliott would eventually be forced to retire through injury, but this would set him on the path to building the Irish training powerhouse we know today. He took out his training license in 2006, aged just 28, and what happened next would shock the racing world and help propel Gordon’s new career. Despite not being able to train a winner in Ireland up to this point, Elliott would become the youngest trainer to land the Grand National when his Silver Birch, ridden by Robbie Power, would take home the Aintree showpiece with the whole word watching.
That would not be Gordon’s only success in the Grand National either, as just over a decade later his stable superstar, Tiger Roll, would capture the hearts of the nation when landing back-to-back victories in the contest, the first horse to do so since Red Rum. The horse of lifetime, Tiger Roll not only won two Grand Nationals but also won at the Cheltenham Festival an extraordinary five times during his career, before he was retired at that racecourse in March of this year to much fanfare from racegoers.
There aren’t many races now, in Ireland or Britain, that Elliott hasn’t won from his strong base at Cullentra House, and he even came close to halting the dominance of Willie Mullins in 2016/17, leading in the Irish Trainers’ Championship up to the penultimate day but losing out due to prize money despite having totalled more winners. He has though been leading trainer at the Cheltenham Festival on two occasions, a credit to the wealth of talent that is built at Cullentra House year on year.
Elliott has a fantastic record here at Down Royal and has been dominant at the meeting in recent years, often setting future stars and prospects on their journey from this very point. The likes of Samcro, Delta Work, Envoi Allen and Felix Desjy have all spent time in the winners’ enclosure at Down Royal in the early parts of their career. He has also won the feature race today, the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, four times in the past ten years with none more notable than Gold Cup winner Don Cossack back in 2015.

English trainer Paul Nicholls loves to take this early season target back to Ditcheat with him and has done so successfully on five occasions. Taranis got the ball rolling in 2007, followed by the dominant Kauto Star in 2008 and 2010 and namesake Kauto Stone in 2012. Frodon ended a nine-year hiatus with his victory last year.
Leading Jockey
Ruby Walsh enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Paul Nicholls and partnered three of his winners -Taranis and twice on Kauto Star. Valseur Lido was Ruby’s other winner, riding for Henry De Bromhead and Gigginstown in 2016. Sean Flanagan showed his class on Road To Respect in back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019, for trainer Noel Meade.
BRITAIN
This contest is one of the few Irish Grade 1races where the British challengers do well.
Courtesy of Paul Nicholls, the British have taken the trophy back across the Irish sea a few times, however in recent years the home contingent have been firmly on top.
IRELAND
VThe Irish training contingent kept Paul Nicholls out of the winners enclosure for eight years until Frodon rolled back the years in the 2021 renewal.
Gordon Elliott, Noel Meade and Henry De Bromhead have all had winners, while Willie Mullins is without a victory since Florida Pearl in 1999.
10 Year Roll Of Honour
Notable Winners
Plenty of well-known names feature on the roll of honour for this Grade 1. Looks Like Trouble is a famous name to win the race. After landing the Cheltenham Gold Cup the previous year, he returned to Down Royal in style to score by an impressive 15 lengths.
The almighty Kauto Star is a fan favourite and is no stranger to this race, winning in 2008 and 2010 under Ruby Walsh. The superstar won 16 Grade 1’s in total, including two Gold Cups at Cheltenham. The classy Don Cossack jumped to victory in 2015 under Bryan Cooper and was an outstanding in-mate for Gordon Elliott, going on to win the Gold Cup the same season.
Today’s Runners &Riders
Another cracking renewal of the Ladbrokes Champion Chase, 5 runners head to post, led by the strong market leader Galvin. His prep run at Punchestown should have him raring to go, as he looks to improve on his second in this last year behind Frodon.
Stablemate and last year’s Irish Gold Cup winner Conflated looks the main danger under Jack Kennedy, while the other Gigginstown runner Beacon Edge is ridden by Bryan Cooper. 10 -year-old Kemboy still looks a class act and is always hard to dismiss for Willie Mullins and the field is rounded up by Envoi Allen who is set for another big season ahead for Cheveley Park.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE Win: CONFLATED Next Best: Galvin
Second to Frodon in this last year, Galvin returned to action with a comfortable Grade 3 success at Punchestown. Gordon Elliott’s gelding ought to be capable of another bold showing, but he might come off second best to stablemate CONFLATED. The Irish Gold Cup hero progressed well last season, rounding it off with a good second in the Betway Bowl at Aintree, and official ratings suggest he’s the one to beat. Envoi Allen can follow them home, ahead of the admirable veteran Kemboy.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE Win: FURY ROAD Next Best: Fighter Allen
A small field for this Grade 2 but still very competitive, as a case can be made for all four runners. Although conceding weight all round, FURY ROAD has won on his only visit to this track and has gone well when fresh in the past, so he edges the vote. Fighter Allen fell at the first at the Punchestown Festival when last seen and, given a clear round this time, he looks the biggest threat. Vanillier is respected but may want further.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE
Win: FINAL ORDERS
Next Best: Arctic Ambition
FINAL ORDERS arrives on a hat-trick after victories at Killarney and Cork, and this looks a nice opportunity to continue the winning thread. Gavin Cromwell’s charge is having his first handicap start over the larger obstacles and an opening mark of 120 could be within his range. Arctic Ambition has been off the track since January, but has been switched to Gordon Elliott so has to be feared. Union Park does have the benefit of recent match practice and he heads the remainder.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE
Win: KING OF KINGSFIELD
Next Best: Honky Tonk
KING OF KINGSFIELD won his sole start in the point-to-point sphere by a wide margin in March and, having subsequently joined Gordon Elliott, he could take all of the beating Willie Mullins’ Honky Tonk makes plenty of appeal on paper and he’s the one expected to put up most resistance. Although he failed to complete in two point-to-points, Faulty has plenty of winners in his pedigree and he’s another who could put up a bold showing.
