DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Win: AMERICAN MIKE Next Best: Letsbeclearaboutit

AMERICAN MIKE was far from disgraced in second behind Facile Vega in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. He finished a distant third behind the aforementioned rival at Punchestown but that could have been the result of a long season and he boasts leading credentials in this. Letsbeclearaboutit won three from five bumper starts and is feared on his return, while Cocoplum completes the shortlist.

BEST TURNED OUT

Down Royal Racecourse is pleased to sponsor the Best Turned Out prize for today’s races.

Willie Mullins ACareer In Profile

Born in County Kilkenny, Willie Mullins hails from a family steeped in racing that have played an enormous role in National Hunt Racing for decades now. The great trainer we know now was initially a successful amateur jockey, landing the amateur jockey championship in Ireland six times. He initiated his training career as an assistant to Jim Bolger before teaming up with his father Paddy. Just like Willie now, his father was no stranger to big race winners with none more famous and recognisable as the great mare Dawn Run, who still to this day is the only horse to complete the prestigious Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup double.

Willie eventually flew the nest and took out his own training license in 1988, still multi-tasking as a jockey whilst juggling his training duties. He would taste his first success as a trainer with Silver -Bachelor at Thurles, the sign of things to come for the now-powerful Irish trainer. It was Florida Pearl though that really put the racing world on notice for this up and coming trainer, the first major star in his storied career. This jumping sensation would collect nine Grade 1 prizes including the Champion Bumper, King George VI Chase and no less than four Irish Gold Cups in an illustrious career. Unfortunately, he could never land the Cheltenham Gold Cup for his trainer though, with a second and third to his name in the Cheltenham showpiece.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup would be a race that long eluded him, despite his magnificent success at the meeting; Mullins is the leading trainer at the meeting with a whopping 88 winners owing to the ever-increasing strength of the battalion he takes across the Irish Sea each year. He would succeed in his quest for the Gold Cup in 2019 however with Al Boum Photo landing the spoils, and just for good measure would back that up again the next year and retain the prize he had waited so long for. So many of these big-race wins came through the magnificent partnership with Ruby Walsh before the baton was passed to Paul Townend as the current number one at Closutton Stables.

Mullins has been building his powerhouse at Closutton for over three decades now and his sheer dominance is no more apparent than in the Irish Trainers` Championship, a title he has won every year since 2008/09. Like at most tracks, Willie Mullins has had plenty of success here at Down Royal in recent years including in today’s WKD Hurdle back in 2017 with loveable fan-favourite Melon. Over the years, Mullins has proved himself to be an excellent trainer of racemares and it is therefore no surprise that he has trained the winner of the Grade 3 Mares` Novice Hurdles four times in the past eight years.

Stats That Matter

Focus On... PIED PIPER

Pied Piper is one of the five runners declared for this year’s WKD hurdle and he looks set to battle it out with stablemate Fil Dor, who also has leading claims.

He began life on the flat where he won his final start at Leicester in a class 3 handicap in eye-catching success, achieving an official rating of 96. He then found his way into Gordon Elliott’s stable after being bought by Caldwell Construction Ltd for 225,000gns and made a significant impact on yard debut, landing a hot maiden at Punchestown and fended off the Triumph Hurdle winner Vauban.

Albeit not looking the deepest of renewals, he immediately stepped up in grade to take the Grade 2 Triumph Trial at Cheltenham, demolishing his rivals by 9 lengths effortlessly under Davy Russell.

He ran respectably at both the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Festival, placing second and third, but this WKD hurdle could be the perfect opportunity for him to follow up his recent Cheltenham success and kick on further this season as expected.

Quote Marks

““He’s got a lot stronger since last season and I love the way he put his head down and galloped to the line”

Gordon Elliott speaking about Pied Piper after his victory over Knight Salute at Cheltenham last month.

Feathard Lady Mares Novice Hurdle

In our third race today, Willie Mullins saddles Champagne Problem, Nikini, Carrigmoorna Queen and Saylavee.

He has won the race 4 times in the last 10 years and could add to his impressive record today.

Brian Hayes took the race by storm last year and teams up with the champion trainer, riding Carrigmoorna Queen.

Number Crunching

3

The number of winning favourites of the WKD Hurdle in the last five years. 5

The number of times a horse has carried less than 11st in the Lough Construction Ltd Handicap Hurdle.

Win: TYRE KICKER

Next Best: Menindee

TYRE KICKER didn’t show much in maiden hurdles, but he took a step forward on his handicap debut when successful at Punchestown in May. Gavin Cromwell’s charge is 8lb higher on his return to action, but he’s fancied to make light of that in a first-time tongue-tie. Menindee has been running to a consistent level in recent starts and looks set for another bold bid, while Jungle Prose and True Destiny are also taken seriously. Golas Tiep shouldn’t be underestimated either.

Jack Kennedy ACareer In Profile

You would be forgiven for thinking that Jack Kennedy was an experienced veteran of the weighing room when reading through his extensive honours list, but the Kerry-born jockey is just 23 years of age. A graduate of the pony racing circuit and winner of the Dingle Derby in 2014, Gordon Elliott struck gold when a young Jack Kennedy joined his stable back in 2015, where he has been ever since.

He had his first ride at Clonmel in 2015 and just two weeks later, on only his seventh ride, rode his first winner in, surprisingly, a seven furlong handicap at Cork. Then another week later, he would experience his first success over hurdles for his boss by a dominating eleven lengths. A sign of things to come, and a demonstration of Jack`s ability to perform on the biggest occasions at such a young age, his first success over the larger obstacles would be in the lucrative Troytown Handicap later that year, worth €100,000. Jack Kennedy would ride out his claim just a year after his first victory over hurdles, marking his name as the rising star in Irish racing.

Kennedy was just 17-years-old when he landed his first Grade 1success aboard Outlander in the Lexus Chase at the end of 2016 and, now he had the taste for it, landed a second Grade 1success just two weeks later aboard Death Duty for the same owners. Those owners are the powerful Gigginstown House Stud, for whom Jack has flown their famous maroon and white silks to an impressive 23 Grade 1victories. The formidable alliance of Kennedy, Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown have enjoyed some glorious days in the winners` enclosure with the likes of Apple`s Jade, Delta Work, Abracadabras and Samcro.

Jack Kennedy has already achieved an impressive ten winners at the Cheltenham festival in his young career, riding his first when he was still just 17-years-old. That first winner was aboard the renowned Labaik, who shocked punters and bookmakers alike when he landed the 2017 Supreme Novices` Hurdle at odds of 25/1, having refused to race on three occasions earlier in the season. His Cheltenham Festival success would only skyrocket from that moment, and just four years later he would reach the pinnacle of the festival when he lifted the Gold Cup after landing the showpiece with Minella Indo in 2021.

Despite being in the saddle for just over seven years, Kennedy has endured his fair share of injuries that has kept him on the side-lines at times. He has often been reminded of the dangerous nature of the sport and has been marred with injuries ranging from leg breaks to broken collarbones. It has therefore been a true testament to his character and resilience that he has bounced back from every harsh setback without losing a beat.

Down Royal is a place that holds special memories for Jack Kennedy as the place he achieved his first Grade 1victory, and he has continued to enjoy great success at the meeting. He rode three winners here last year which included a dominant eight-length victory in the Grade 2 WKD Hurdle aboard Zanahiyr. He has also won the 2m1f Maiden Hurdle on Saturday for the past two years, aboard future Grade 1 winners Ballyadam and Mighty Potter, so will be hoping for the hattrick this year with yet another smart prospect in the making.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE Win: THE MODEL KINGDOM Next Best: Nikini

In a race stacked with potential stars at this level, THE MODEL KINGDOM strikes as one highly likely to continue to make an impact. It’s hard to know how much she still had in the locker as she was eased down to win on her hurdles debut at Tipperary last month, but she showed enough determination in her previous outings in bumpers to suggest she has a willingness to dig deep. Improving individuals such as Nikini, Carrigmoorna Queen and Magical Zoe are expected to be thereabouts as well.

Fact File

Leading Trainer

Noel Meade has saddled six winners of this race but hasn’t had one since Monksland led the field home in 2012. All the other usual faces have tasted success in this recently, with Gordon Elliott training Coeur Sublime and Zanahiyr to victory in 2019 and 2021 respectively. Jessica Harrington saddled Jezki to victory in 2013, three years after her Gimli’s Rock won the race.

Leading Jockey

With Noel Meade leading trainer, it comes as little surprise that Paul Carberry has lifted home the most winners from the saddle in this race. He and Meade teamed up with Scottish Memories (2002), Khetaam (2003) Ikitiaf (2006), Aitmatov (2007) and Monksland in 2012. Barry Geraghty also enjoyed great success in this contest, riding Macs Joy, Voler La Vedette and The Real Article to victory. Rachael Blackmore is the most successful jockey of recent years, winning the race on Bedrock and Aspire Tower.

BRITAIN

Like many of the races when Britain and Ireland clash head-to-head, Ireland seem to have the measure. To date, there has only been one British-trained winner, coming from the Iain Jardine stable.

A shock winner of this competitive hurdle, Bedrock fended off the almighty Samcro under Rachael Blackmore to score a point for Britain.

IRELAND

Another race that is dominated by the Irish trainers and has kept Britain out of the scope for almost 20 years.

VHenry De Bromhead, Gordon Elliott, Noel Meade and Jessica Harrington have all enjoyed at least two successes in this race, with Willie Mullins only having the one claim to fame in 2017 with Melon.

Distance

10 Year Roll Of Honour

Noteable Winners

Many of well-known faces feature on this smart list.

The first winner of this race, Ned Kelly, proved to be a smart hurdler who went on to win the Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

The 2004 winner Macs Joy went on to enjoy multiple Grade 1 glory and is best known for his multiple race rivalry against the Champion Hurdler Brave Inca.

Willie Mullins sole winner of the race has proved to be a very smart type and has been rated as high as 164 over fences.

Last year’s winner Zanahiyr must also not be forgotten about after placing only behind Honeysuckle and Epatante at the Cheltenham Festival last season.

Today’s Runners &Riders

A battle of the two powerhouse hurdlers that Gordon Elliott holds in his firepower, Fil Dor and Pied Piper both line up to bring the prize back to Cullentra House.

John Ryan also saddles two runners, with Gaelic Arc having stronger claims than his stablemate Bonarc, who will need to pull out all the stops under Danny Mullins.

The 5 runner field is concluded by David Garrick, with Rachael Blackmore looking to improve on her impressive strike rate in this classy contest.

Win: PIED PIPER Next Best: Fil Dor

This looks to be a match between Gordon Elliott’s two promising four-year-olds and fitness on the side of PIED PIPER may just win the day. A comfortable winner on his return at Cheltenham last month, the son of New Approach has always had plenty of ability and this may be the season that he puts it all together. Stablemate Fil Dor would have been a multiple Grade One winner last season but for the presence of Vauban and he is sure to go close on his return. Gaelic Arc rates best of the rest.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE Win: GEVREY Next Best: The Greek

Gordon Elliott looks to have a couple of solid chances here, with GEVREY fancied to give weight and a beating to his rivals. He gamely beat subsequent winner Optional Mix over an extended 2m3f at Limerick recently and a 6lb rise might not be enough to anchor him if he’s in the same mood. His stablemate The Greek arrives following a win at Perth and he is respected, although Now Where Or When and Gladiatorial are feared most.

Win: MIGHTY POTTER

Next Best: Largy Debut

It is difficult to look past MIGHTY POTTER, who made quite the impression as a novice hurdler last season despite looking like a horse who was crying out for a fence. He gets that opportunity here, at a track where he won so easily on this card last year, and he can take this en route to bigger assignments. Largy Debut may not have lived up to expectations after an impressive maiden hurdle win at Cork last December but fences could reignite him, while Hascoeur Clermont is another to note.

Win: BETTER DAYS AHEAD

Next Best: Carnfunnock

With just three heading to post, it is easiest to side with BETTER DAYS AHEAD, who makes his Rules debut following a comfortable victory in a point-to-point in February and has to be respected on his return to action. He makes his stable debut for powerful connections and shades the vote ahead of Carnfunnock, who was last seen finishing well beaten in a Grade 1bumper at Punchestown. Do As Your Told completes the line-up.
