WELCOME

Emma Meehan, CEO

I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming you all to our Ladbrokes Festival 2021; I don’t think any of us could of envisaged when we moved Behind Closed Doors in March 2020 it would be almost two years before we welcomed you back on mass to enjoy the full Down Royal festival experience. We have been overwhelmed by your support since we have been able to reintroduce public to the racecourse. The patience and resilience you have shown as we have navigated the road back has been so very much appreciated and has allowed us to get to where we are today! We are very grateful to our sponsors who have shown their unwavering support of the continuity of top-quality racing at Down Royal by supporting us during the pandemic and continuing to do so as we remerge. We are incredibly proud to have the support of so many top brands across both days and a special mention must go to both WKD who lead out on Friday and of course Ladbrokes our headline sponsor. Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who make racing happen here at Down Royal, across industry, suppliers and staff all of whom have done their upmost to ensure the successful continuation of our sport through the pandemic. Your help, support, and effort has been the rock on which we built our successful return and for that I thank you. All that remains for me to say is to have a fantastic day of racing! Yours in Sport, Emma Meehan

Horse Welfare – A Priority

At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

Membership

In recent years Down Royal Racecourse has been proactive in maintaining and improving their existing facilities and track. No wonder it is now known as one of Ireland’s finest Racecourses. DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Next Best: Sea Sessions

Win: FIL DOR

Gordon Elliott is no stranger to sending exciting prospects to this race and FIL DOR can add his name to the illustrious role of honour on his stable debut. The son of Doctor Dino showed plenty of encouraging signs when second in France on his sole start and, considering he is related to plenty of successful hurdlers, he may relish the switch to timber. Sea Sessions made a solid start to his life over obstacles with a gallant second behind an in-form rival and he rates the most immediate danger. Inca Prince completes the shortlist.

Bottles, Glasses & Cans Patrons please do not take drinks outside bar areas as they cause accidents. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares Novice Hurdle (Grade 3) Colm Murphy took home the second race on our card and the first Graded race of the two days. Party Central was sent off the 11/10 favourite after winning her

1st Impervious 2nd Sit Down Lucy 3rd Glan

first start over hurdles at Listowel. Annie G took them along with Rachael Blackmore setting quick fractions. Impervious was happy to wait 4/5 lengths behind, at the head of the chasing pack. Gordon Elliott’s other runner Glan wasn’t jumping with quite the same fluency as the rest and found herself surrendering a few lengths at multiple hurdles. At the seven pole, Annie G’s early exertions told and she was swallowed up, leaving Party Central in front. She looked to be travelling well but found very little and quickly faded away. Impervious on the other hand found more than enough and jumped the last hurdle excellently to win going away.

Impervious

The WKD Hurdle (Grade 2) Zanahiyr was a real talking horse last season but couldn’t quite deliver in the top Graded races. He came here looking to get his season off to a flying start but Cask Mate would prove to be a worthy rival.

1st Zanahiyr 2nd Cask Mate 3rd Bonarc

Jack Kennedy chose to keep things simple on Zanahiyr and went from the front. Cask Mate was content to sit in behind and stalk the leader with the rest of the field around two lengths behind. At the seven pole, Jack began to up the tempo and it soon began to develop into a two horse race. His jumping was excellent throughout but it was by no means straightforward and turning for home Cask Mate ranged alongside Zanahiyr but the favourite was more than up to the challenge and coming to the second last he produced much the better jump.

Cask Mate on the other hand almost ran straight through it and threw all chance of winning the race. Zanahiyr began to pull clear and won quite impressively in the end. Bonarc plugged on to take third, but it was Zanahiyr who will be earning all the praise.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Win: MIGHTY POTTER

Next Best: Onlyhuman

MIGHTY POTTER looked a decent prospect when scoring on his debut at Punchestown in March and he bids to follow on from Envoi Allen (2019) and Ballyadam (2020) by making it a hat-trick of victories for Gordon Elliott. Onlyhuman has shown promise on both starts over timber and this useful Flat performer is likely to enter calculations along with The Greek, who boasts a consistent level of form, and Luke Short.

Race 2

Her half-sister was a useful chaser for Hughie Morrison. May lack experience

It’s safe to say Henry De Bromhead has assembled one of the finest stables in Ireland. He added the likes of Envoi Allen and Ballyadam to his already formidable team and won last seasons Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle and Champion Chase at Cheltenham. This was then followed by the icing on the cake as Minella Times won the Aintree Grand National. In de Bromhead’s 21 years as a trainer – he took over the reins from his father at the family’s Co. Waterford base in 1999 – no-one has done more to advertise his skills as a handler than the famous Sizing Europe. After all, the now 17-year-old earned de Bromhead his first Grade 1 accolade when triumphing in the Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown in 2008. It had looked a possibility that the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle would be added that season, only for Sizing Europe to suffer a back injury two obstacles from home as his chance of Festival glory went begging. Clearly a talented hurdler, it was over fences that de Bromhead got an even better tune out of Sizing Europe. Five successive wins at the start of his life over the larger obstacles culminated in Grade 1 successes in the Bord na Mona with the Nature Novice Chase at Leopardstown and the Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase at Cheltenham. De Bromhead was in for more glory with a consistent 2010/11 season for Sizing Europe, in which he finished second in the Ladbrokes Champion Steeplechase and was rewarded with a mightily impressive victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He won a further ten Grade 1 and Grade 2 races for his master trainer and will always be regarded as one of the very best. Here at Down Royal, he’s had plenty of success over the years, including when winning the 2016 renewal of the Ladbrokes Champion Steeplechase with Valseur Lido putting in the performance of his life on his very first start for de Bromhead after moving from Willie Mullins’ yard. He sluiced away from multiple Grade 1-winner Silviniaco Conti to win by eleven lengths. Henry also boasts a fine record at Down Royal and Friday’s Grade 2 WKD Hurdle has gone his way twice since 2015, the ill-fated Identity Thief took the 2015 running while last year saw him take home yet more glory in the race with Aspire Tower. The latter overcame the short priced favourite Abacadabras to win by an impressive 4 1/2 lengths. He went onto finish second in the Matheson Hurdle at Leopardstown.

PAUL NICHOLLS

MINELLA INDO

HENRY DE BROMHEAD

Focus On... Minella Indo 2021 Gold Cup hero Minella Indo will be hoping to make a winning reappearance in todays Ladbrokes Champion Steeplechase. The Henry De Bromhead trained gelding topped off an excellent season when winning the Gold Cup and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Al Boum Photo and make it back-to-back wins in the race. Last season saw him win first at Wexford in a Grade Three by an emphatic 25 lengths before going on to to win at Navan in similar style, beating the Willie Mullins trained Brahma Bull. He was sent off a well-supported favourite in the Savills chase but unfortunately fell at the eighth fence. It seemed to really knock his confidence and at Punchestown he could only manage a remote fourth behind Kemboy and previous Ladbrokes Chase winner The Storyteller. Cheltenham however bought him back to life and he denied stablemate A Plus Tard to win the Gold Cup.

Quote Marks

“I heard Rachael coming and he took off “again, It’s unbelievable Stuff.” ”

Jack Kennedy describes what it was like to win on Minella Indo after the Gold Cup.

What’s in a Name

Running in this afternoon’s penultimate race of the day is Hoke Coburn. Named after a protagonist hero in the play ‘ Driving Miss Daisy’ . Hoke Coburn was played by Morgan Freeman in the 1989 adaptation. Maybe he will prove a hero for the punter’s today?

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Next Best: Light Brigade

Win: YAFORDADOE

Leading owner J P McManus has won the last couple of runnings of this contest and jockey bookings would suggest that Magic Tricks is the best of his three representatives today, although Charli Parcs and Hearts Are Trumps certainly aren’t out of it. Eskylane and Glorious Zoff are other Gordon Elliott runners who could go well, although former Elliott inmate Homme D’Un Soir is arguably even more interesting on his handicap/ stable debut. Light Brigade and Gua Du Large can’t be ruled out either, but YAFORDADOE has been in fantastic form on the Flat and he could exploit and lenient hurdles mark.

Abandonment Notice Tickets will not be exchanged or refunded other than if racing is abandoned before the start of the 2nd race. Should the meeting be abandoned after the start of the 2nd race there will be no refunds or exchanges made. Refunds can not be made on raceday. To obtain a refund, tickets should be sent to The Secretary’s Office, Down Royal Racecourse, Maze, Lisburn, Co. Down, BT27 5RW. All refunds must be claimed within 28 days of the race meeting.

Horse Welfare – A Priority At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing.

Race 4

A race which witnesses the return of last season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner MINELLA INDO, who held sway over his better-fancied stablemate A Plus Tard in the showpiece event back in March. The eight-year-old will no doubt be using this race as a springboard to success on an even bigger stage in the future but may just have too much class for his rivals, with the improving Galvin tipped to follow him home. Frodon is always a dangerous rival when getting into a good rhythm on the front end and shouldn’t be ruled out

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Next Best: Coko Beach

Win: ENVOI ALLEN

Race 5

It would be a huge surprise if ENVOI ALLEN wasn’t able to successfully give these rivals weight and a beating on his return to action. He landed a beginners chase impressively over C&D at this meeting last year before winning his Grade 1 in the Drinmore and, although things never went right for him in the spring, Henry de Bromhead’s charge should get this season off to the best possible start now he’s dropped in trip. Gordon Elliott’s pair Coko Beach, a Grade 2 winner, and Vado Forte are expected to put up most resistance.

Drones In accordance with public safety and animal welfare, no drones may be flown over any part of Down Royal Racecourse or any adjacent areas.

It’s the social event of the year so of course we’ll be covering every minute of it on social media! You can get in on the action too – send us your snaps using #DownRoyal Facebook.com/downroyalracing

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Next Best: Clondaw Secret

Win: WESTSTREET

WESTSTREET is an interesting addition to Gordon Elliott’s yard and he could be well handicapped over fences. His last run for Oliver Sherwood when narrowly denied at Fontwell in February was good form in the context of this race and, after shaping nicely over hurdles at Limerick, he looks a big player. The other Elliott inmate Clondaw Secret is also a leading contender as he makes just his third start over the larger obstacles, while Shanroe Al C is another for the shortlist.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Win: AMERICAN MIKE

Next Best: Cocoplum

AMERICAN MIKE ran out an emphatic winner on his sole point-to-point start, brushing aside his rivals with consummate ease, and the 195,000-pound purchase can continue his ascendancy under Rules. The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding gets the nod to hit the ground running, while Champ De Gane demands the utmost respect after giving a good account to finish second on racecourse debut in May. Cocoplum has fitness on her side after finishing second at Galway earlier this month and the daughter of Nathaniel completes the shortlist.
