WELCOME

Emma Meehan, CEO

I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming you all to our Ladbrokes Festival 2021; I don’t think any of us could of envisaged when we moved Behind Closed Doors in March 2020 it would be almost two years before we welcomed you back on mass to enjoy the full Down Royal festival experience. We have been overwhelmed by your support since we have been able to reintroduce public to the racecourse. The patience and resilience you have shown as we have navigated the road back has been so very much appreciated and has allowed us to get to where we are today! We are very grateful to our sponsors who have shown their unwavering support of the continuity of top-quality racing at Down Royal by supporting us during the pandemic and continuing to do so as we remerge. We are incredibly proud to have the support of so many top brands across both days and a special mention must go to both WKD who lead out on Friday and of course Ladbrokes our headline sponsor. Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who make racing happen here at Down Royal, across industry, suppliers and staff all of whom have done their upmost to ensure the successful continuation of our sport through the pandemic. Your help, support, and effort has been the rock on which we built our successful return and for that I thank you. All that remains for me to say is to have enjoy a fantastic day of racing! Yours in Sport, Emma Meehan

Horse Welfare – A Priority

At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. The Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRCVS)

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Win: HOLLOW GAMES

Next Best: Simply Shabra

Gordon Elliott has dominated this race in recent years, winning five of the last six renewals, and he appears to have another outstanding chance with HOLLOW GAMES this time around. Bought for 255,000 pounds shortly after a 30-length point-to-point success, he made no mistake in two bumper appearances towards the end of last year and it will be a huge shock if he doesn’t make a winning start over timber. The progressive Simply Shabra is fancied to take second, ahead of the 109-rated Eat The Book.

Win: PURPLE MOUNTAIN Next Best: Party Central Willie Mullins has farmed this contest with three wins in a row from 2014 to 2016 and another in 2019, and he may strike again with PURPLE MOUNTAIN. Unbeaten after two starts over hurdles, she stayed on well to win a similar race at Tipperary and has already proved her ability in this grade. Party Central is the obvious danger in receipt of 7lb and she looks to have a bright future, while the unbeaten Impervious could figure if she has the early pace for this reduced trip, having won twice over further.

Thank You

Down Royal Racecourse would like to thank the Irish European Breeders Fund, Ladbrokes, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Lough Construction Ltd, Tote Ireland and WKD for their generous sponsorship of today’s meeting.

Noel Meade began his training career with one horse in 1970 and in the subsequent 49 years, he has established himself as one of the leading trainers in Britain and Ireland. Initially, Meade was largely focussed on the flat and in fact his breakthrough success came in 1978 when a horse called Sweet Mint won what is now the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. He soon became established as one of the leading flat trainers in Ireland but having always kept some jumpers in the yard, towards the middle of the 1990s, Meade decided to switch his attention to the National Hunt scene full-time. That has proved an excellent decision as Meade has been crowned Champion Trainer on seven occasions and has enjoyed notable success at all the major Festivals. That time also saw him team up with jockey Paul Carberry who was synonymous with riding for the Meade yard until retiring from the saddle in 2016. There have been many talented performers to have passed through Noel Meade’s hands but few can match the achievements of Harchibald, who won five Grade 1s including two renewals of the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle. He liked to be held up towards the rear which was a perfect match for the quiet riding style of Paul Carberry and he retired in 2009 with career earnings of over £500,000. Go Native was another hurdler of immense talent to be trained by Noel Meade, winning seven of his thirteen starts. Having won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2009, he won two further Grade 1s the following season in the Fighting Fifth and the Christmas Hurdle. I have already alluded to the fact that Meade has enjoyed success at the Cheltenham Festival, with his first winner coming courtesy of Sausalito Bay, who won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2000. Since then, he has added a further four Festival victories, namely Nicanor (2006 Neptune Novices’ Hurdle), Go Native (2009 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle), Very Wood (2014 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle) and most recently Road To Respect, who won the Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase at the 2017 Festival. Road To Respect also gave Noel Meade his one Grade One success in 2018. Jeff Kidder was the star of last season for the yard and proved his win in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle was no fluke. A Grade Two followed at Fairyhouse and then a Grade One at Punchestown in the Ballymore Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle. A remarkable training performance to get a horse who was beaten into last at 50/1 only four starts before that to winning a Grade One. He’s been described as a ‘film start in the yard’ and the Noel Meade team will be oozing with confidence going into the 2021 season.

GORDON ELLIOTT

ZANAHIYR

JACK KENNEDY

Focus On... Zanahiyr Zanahiyr has only had the five starts over hurdles since moving to Gordon Elliott from Mick Halford. He began life on the flat where he won his final start at Fairyhouse in a Maiden before being gelded and bought by Noel and Valerie Moran. He was sent to Gordon Elliott and began life over hurdles by winning at Ballinrobe in a Maiden Hurdle under Keith Donoghue. He immediately stepped up in grade to take a Grade 3 juvenile hurdle at Fairyhouse beating Saint Sam by an impressive 14 lengths. Jack Kennedy then rode him again at Christmas where he justified short odds to win at Leopardstown, which often throws up a top hurdler. He didn’t look to be the same horse in the JCB Triumph hurdle and despite running a lot better at Punchestown the team at Cullentra will be hoping he can make into a top hurdler this season. The WKD hurdle looks the perfect opportunity to get back into the winner’s enclosure and it should be a fascinating race to watch.

Quote Marks

“He’s not just a juvenile, he’s big and “strong and only going to get better.” ” Gordon Elliott talking about Zanahiyr after his second win over hurdles at Fairyhouse.

Win: ZANAHIYR

ZANAHIYR looks to be head and shoulders above his opposition in this contest having put together quite the novice hurdle campaign. A winner of three of his five starts, including twice in Graded company, the son of Nathaniel contested Grade 1s at both Cheltenham and Punchestown where he performed with credit on both occasions. Receiving 5lb from the selection, Cask Mate is the main danger having finished second in the Royal Bond last season. Bonarc is likely to pick up the pieces if there are any mishaps from the top two.

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

The daughter of a dairy farmer and a teacher, Rachael Blackmore certainly doesn’t hail from the usual ‘racing’ family that many jockeys have as a starting point and yet, she has risen to the very top of her profession regardless - an exceptional example of her relentless character and will to win. Blackmore grew up on a farm and her connection with horses started there, with regular access to ponies and therefore the opportunity to take part in Pony Clubs, hunts and races followed. She often harks back to the day when she had her first pony race win, at the age of 13, when she defeated none other than Willie Mullins’ number one jockey, Paul Townend - a memory that still burns brightly for the competitive 29-year-old. Under rules, she had to wait until 2011 for her break - Blackmore’s first winner was Stowaway Pearl at Thurles in the Tipperary Ladies’ Handicap Hurdle after being recommended to ‘Shark’ Hanlon by champion jockey Davy Russell. It’s hard to put into words quite how remarkable last season was for Rachael Blackmore. She was one of, if not the best jockey during last season and backed it up with a quite emphatic Cheltenham. Her relationship with Henry De Bromhead has continued to go from strength to strength and it was onboard his horses that she picked up the Champion Hurdle and finished second in the Gold Cup before going on to claim victory in the Aintree Grand National. One horse comes to mind when you think of Rachael Blackmore and that’s the superstar mare Honeysuckle. The two have picked up no fewer than eight Grade ones and still remain undefeated. Her win in the Champion Hurdle was frightening and she went on to finish her season in fine style by winning the Irish Champion Hurdle at Punchestown. With it looking likely she will remain over hurdles, it is hard to look past her for next years Champion Hurdle. In the 2020-21 season she rode 92 winners and who knows, she may even get to the magic 100 winners this season!

DOWN ROYAL FORM GUIDE

Win: OUTSIDE THE DOOR

Next Best: Game Catch

Race 4

The Padraig Roche-trained OUTSIDE THE DOOR posted his best piece of form when winning comfortably at Listowel last month, getting the better of a progressive rival in the process, and the five-year-old is tipped to prove too strong for his rivals. Game Catch continued his progression when finishing second at Tipperary earlier this month and looks set for another bold showing, while China Princess and the Gordon Elliott-trained Excelcior are others to consider in a competitive affair.

Race 5

Gordon Elliott has frequently targeted this race with future stars and GRAND PARADIS may be able to add his name to the illustrious roll of honour, which includes Envoi Allen, Samcro and Delta Work. The five-year-old went from strength to strength over hurdles, finishing with a comfortable Grade 3 victory, and considering he is related to plenty of smart chasers, he can continue his ascendancy on his seasonal reappearance. It is impossible to escape the threat of the destructive Albert Bartlett winner Vanillier, but his best exploits may come over further this season, while Beacon Edge is another to consider.

It’s the social event of the year so of course we’ll be covering every minute of it on social media! You can get in on the action too – send us your snaps using #DownRoyal Facebook.com/downroyalracing

Next Best: The Abbey

Win: WEIHNACHTS

WEIHNACHTS got the hang of things over fences with two comfortable victories at Fairyhouse and Gowran Park earlier in the year and Philip Rothwell’s gelding may have more to offer this season. Bentham has been knocking on the door recently, placing on his last three starts, and he is likely to be competitive once again with cheekpieces applied for the first time. Others for the shortlist include The Abbey, who is likely to benefit from the return to the larger obstacles, and Ingleby Mackenzie.

Race 6

Horse Welfare – A Priority At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing.

Next Best: Maxios

Win: THE MEDIATOR

Gordon Elliott, who has won four of the last six runnings of this contest, saddles two here and it’s his newcomer, THE MEDIATOR, who gets the vote. Jockey bookings point to the son of Maxios and he is certainly bred for the job, with his half-brother Applaus successful in the bumper sphere. Lieutenant Highway also represents Elliott and could build on his opening performance at Punchestown, although Sundrenched brings the best form to the table and is feared most.
