The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 9

THE HORSEWARE STUDENT DERBY

ANNALISE CULLEN

My name is Annalise Cullen. I am 19 years old. I am studying Global Commerce in NUIG and I am an apprentice jockey. I came up through the pony and junior ranks while eventing and show jumping. I’ve evented up to 2* level at international events in Ireland and show jumped up to 1.20m level. In early 2020, I turned my attention to racing. This was due to the covid-19 pandemic, as I started working full time at home riding out for my Dad. Racing has always been a massive part of my family. I took out my apprentice license in November 2020. I’ve had 5 winners since then in my first season from 43 rides. Two of these wins being at The Curragh Racecourse! During the summer I rode out for Dad, Michael Grassick and Willie Mullins. I also took out my conditionals license and have had 3 rides over jumps. This is something I hope to build on in the future. While it has been challenging to balance studying in college with race riding, I am delighted to be able to combine the two and represent my college in the Student Derby!

Hi, my name is George Connolly. I am 22 years old, and I am from Leighlinbridge in Co Carlow. I am in my final year in UCD studying Commerce. I was fortunate to have grown up on a stud farm and have been around horses all my life. As a result, I have always had a great interest in racing and bloodstock.

GEORGE CONNOLLY

My Dad owns and runs Burgage Stud which is a very successful National Hunt stud farm. I have enjoyed and learnt from Jim Bolger, Willie Mullins John Gosden, Nicolas Clement, Pat Fahy and Jimmy Barcoe. I am really looking forward to the opportunity of representing UCD in the inaugural Student Derby. It is a great concept to encourage new participants to the world of racing. For me it will be an amazing experience to actually ride at the Curragh racecourse where so many great horses and jockeys have made their name.

MARK MCDONAGH I am a 7lb claiming conditional national hunt jockey in Ireland along with studying Business Studies in the University of Limerick. I started riding ponies and show jumping from a young age which progressed into going racing from the age of 16 as an amateur. I turned professional in September 2019, and I rode my first winner in September 2020 in Listowel. My career highlights involve a Grade B winner in Killarney and riding a double in Tramore earlier this month. I’m currently in 3rd year in college and I have majored in Accounting.

12

ALICE MCGONNELL

Hi! I’m Alice Mc Gonnell, a third-year medical student at Oxford University. I have been riding for my entire life and currently event my 7-year-old mare in England. I am also Captain of the University Equestrian Club and absolutely adore competing for Oxford with some of my best friends. Before I found out about this race, I had never sat on a racehorse; consequently, I started riding out for Jamie Snowdon 2 months ago. I have also had a few lessons with David Crosse, who has given me a crash course in race riding! I feel extremely lucky to be riding at such a prestigious venue and I can’t wait to ride in my first race on Tuesday.

HARRY SWAN My name is Harry Swan and I study biological and biomedical science in Trinity College Dublin. I’m an amateur jockey in Ireland and I’ve ridden 7 winners on the track. I rode my first winner in Worcester when I was 16 for my grandfather Timmy Hyde who has been a great supporter of mine. My best moment in the saddle is winning a Grade 3 Novice Hurdle in Naas racecourse aboard on Eagles Wings, also for Timmy. This season I wish to ride as many winners as I can, both on the track and in point to points.

SARAH VERLING

My name is Sarah Verling. I am a first-year business student in MTU. I am from Castlelyons in Co. Cork. I’m a graduate of the Race Academy in Kildare and have an apprentice license with trainer Rodger Sweeney. Also, I have gained valuable experience working for both Ken Condon and Johnny Murtagh here on the Curragh. I have only recently taken out a jumps license and I am riding out in Henry de Bromhead’s yard in Waterford at the weekend.

THE HORSEWARE STUDENT DERBY

BEN HARVEY

My name is Ben Harvey, I am 20 years old and studying equine business in Maynooth university. I come from a racing a background with my grandfather and father both training track horses and point to pointers. I am an amateur jockey and spend most of my time riding out for John McConnell, Pat Doyle and Peter Flood. I’ve had some good success riding both on the track and in point to points having ridden a winner around the cross-country course at Cheltenham at the December meeting, winning the Ulster grand national and winning the novice riders championship for the 2018/19 point to point season. I am really looking forward to representing Maynooth in the student derby and getting the chance to ride at the Curragh racecourse.

PADDY BARLOW My name is Paddy Barlow and I have grown up around racing currently study Veterinary Medicine alongside riding as an amateur. I have ridden in all sorts of races from Arabs to Point-to-Points and am looking forward to adding riding in the Horseware Ireland Student Derby to my roster.

FREDDIE PROCTOR

Hello, I am Freddie Procter, I am 22 years old studying Politics and Economics at Cardiff University. I started riding out and pony racing at 9, moved onto point-to-pointing at 16. Spent a season at Joseph O’Brien’s after A-Levels and currently riding out for Will Biddick around Uni. I have spent time at Colin Tizzard’s, Harry Whittington’s and a brief stint at Willie Mullins yard. I have two winners from four rides over hurdles so far this season. I am really looking forward to competing in the Horseware Ireland Student Derby. 14

ALBI TUFNELL

I worked for Fergal O’Brien full time as an amateur jockey during the 2020/21 national hunt season and hold a category B amateur license. I’ve ridden 7 winners point to pointing and 3 winners on the racecourse. All three were career highlights at Sandown, Stratford and Cheltenham. I plan to continue race riding whilst at Cambridge and hopefully make it to both the Aintree and Cheltenham fox hunters.

Hi, my name is Áine Lane and I will be representing University College Cork in the Horseware Student Derby on the 26th October. I started riding ponies when I was about 7 years old and competed in show jumping, eventing and pony games. I started riding racehorses for Andrew and Aileen Lee in 2015 and worked there on weekends and school holidays. In 2020 I moved to Terence O’Brien and have now been working for John Murphy in Innishannon since May.

AINE LANE

I am currently in third year of Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science in UCC. I am an active member of the horseracing society and the judo club in college.

BILLY CHATTERTON I am in my final year at Harper Adams University studying Agriculture with Farm Business Management, also an active member of the rugby club representing the 1st XV. I try to ride out for Phil Rowley twice a week in between my lectures and Laura Morgan at the weekends to help my fittest for point to pointing. I grew up on a family farm in Leicestershire where hunting was a big part of my childhood and still is today. Once school and rugby commitments reduced, I decided to follow my dad and brother’s footsteps into point-to-point riding and have enjoyed success on some of the family’s horses, culminating in winning the Midlands novice championship last season. I am looking forward to starting my third season with the aim of riding out my 5lbs novices claim. I cannot thank Riley and Paddy enough for organising this race and all the trainers who are kindly running their horses, I can’t wait to be involved. 15

RACE ONE

CURRAGH COMMENT A typically strong juvenile contest at this track, featuring all of the usual top yards, and a smart performance is likely to be required in order to land the spoils. The Ballydoyle juveniles have been in excellent form of late and the beautifully-bred TOY looks the one to focus on, being out of one of the most prolific broodmares in recent times. The Irish 1000 Guineas entrant can get the better of another Classic entry in the shape of Ha Ha Ha, while the Ger Lyons-trained Scarlet Angel is another newcomer deserving plenty of attention. Dissociate and Life In Colour may do best of those with experience.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. Big race wins on Helvic Dream in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Mooniesta in the Paddy Power Sapphire Stakes and Search For A Song in the Raa Atoll Loughbrown Stakes have been highlights in a season which saw him smash Joseph O’Brien’s record for winners in a season, riding 128 winners. Colin set a new record for winners in a season in Ireland when he landed his 127th victory of the campaign aboard Power Under Me at the Curragh.

Raise You is of interest on the step up in trip, while stablemate Shoshone Warrior and Protagonist are others to consider.

WIN: BARBADOS

DANGER: MICRO MANAGE

THANK YOU The Curragh would like to thank Eva Bucher–Haefner’s Moyglare Stud for the generous sponsorship of the Stable Staff Canteen for the 2021 season.

CURRAGH COMMENT L’Un Deux Trois forced Crassus to settle for another supporting role when springing a surprise over 1m4f here, although that form isn’t guaranteed to be confirmed. Slieve Bearnagh and Dha Leath also arrive in winning form, but the latter only accounted for CHACHA DANCER by half a length at Navan and is 3lb worse off. Chris Timmons’ filly has since been beaten here, but the drop from 1m4f is in her favour and the performance can be upgraded because she fluffed her lines at the start.

CURRAGH COMMENT

RACE EIGHT

A race that isn’t easy to get a handle on and plenty of the runners have something to find, having either been struggling over obstacles or being unproven on the Flat. Lunar Display produced a useful piece of form when finishing third in a Listed event over hurdles at Limerick earlier this month and is respected if taking part after scoring at Wexford on Sunday, though it is the Jessica Harringtontrained NEVERUSHACON who makes the most appeal. The 10-year-old was a talented chaser in the past and, despite not being the force of old, he still makes a more compelling case than most of his rivals. Vermilion Cliffs and Rebel Early can both make the frame.

WIN: NEVERRUSHACON

DANGER: LUNAR DISPLAY
