Around The Paddock A Simple Guide A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A ﬁt horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. CURRAGH COMMENT Despite the big field there is an absence of winning track form, with No More Porter the only course winner after scoring twice at 7f and over a mile, the latest of those back in 2024. SUIR MONAD attempts to give weight away all round despite only being a three-year-old, racing off 7lb more after making all to win by two and a half lengths at Killarney. Similar tactics just 10 days later could see the lightly-raced Dark Angel gelding double up. Martin Hassett intrigues by trying first-time cheekpieces on Navajo Point even though he won at Gowran Park last month, while Khormor Syd, Nibras Rainbow and Mare Crisium are others capable of being in the mix.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Six-time winner GRANN’S BOY has been running well over hurdles and is useful on the Flat. The six-year-old won a Listed hurdle at the Galway Festival in August and while he hasn’t raced in this sphere since March, he finished second at Navan and had previously won over today’s trip last October. Nicky Larson has improved over hurdles recently and while reverting to the level with a favourable rating as a progressive three-year-old, he does have his stamina to prove. Glittering Gem ran well on her first attempt at this trip at Thurles last week, but does have a wide draw to contend with in stall 24.
