The Keeneland Association of Lexington, Kentucky — which is both a racetrack and the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house — is proud to sponsor the historic and prestigious Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh. This autumn, the eyes of the Thoroughbred world will be on Keeneland for an extraordinary stretch of racing, sales and championship competition. The schedule begins Sept. 14 with the September Yearling Sale and is followed by the Fall Race Meet from Oct. 2-24; the Keeneland Championship Sale during Breeders’ Cup week on Oct. 28; the Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Oct. 30-31; the November Breeding Stock Sale, which begins Nov. 3; and the November Horses of Racing Age Sale on Nov. 11. This marks the fourth time Keeneland has hosted the Breeders’ Cup, following 2015, 2020 and 2022. Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A ﬁt horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. CURRAGH COMMENT JEWEL IN A CROWD showed the benefit of his debut at Cork when a promising third behind Abraham Lincoln over C&D and the form of that race has been working out well since. New Bond Street (third) and My Lucky Journey (fourth) were separated by less than a length behind Man’s Best Friend over a similar trip at Naas last month and the winner has since followed up in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. Riding arrangements suggest that Snowing is preferred of Aidan O’Brien’s three runners, although she was no match for Concorde Landed at Naas last month.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Five of these were separated by two lengths in a premier handicap over this trip at Cork, and that is clearly the main formline to use in working out this puzzle. A Listed winner over C&D winner as a juvenile, IPANEMA QUEEN gained her first win of the campaign when just holding Erosandpsyche by a short-head. The latter, who was hampered close home, is now 3lb better off, but Robson De Aguiar’s filly can confirm the form. Confirmed front-runner Genesis heads the remainder.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most deﬁnitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race! VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

JAMES’S DELIGHT won the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes over C&D last year and was third to July Cup winner Comanche Brave in this year’s renewal in May. The selection was just behind Big Gossey on that occasion, but is preferred on overall form to the popular veteran. CURRAGH COMMENT SUN GODDESS can give Aidan O’Brien an unprecedented 18th success in this illustrious contest. The Sioux Nation filly was second in the Albany at Royal Ascot and went one better in a Group 2 over C&D on Derby weekend. She seems a a very professional juvenile and is well suited by fast ground. Celeron left behind a disappointing run in the Windsor Castle, where he finished well behind King Of Cloughan, when proving three lengths too good for Tribeca in the Railway here last month. King Of Cloughan has since finished second of three in the Prix Morny and may be better suited to this trip than Tyros runner-up Folsom Blues.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

BETTING EXPLAINED

The ﬁrst thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered.
