On behalf of Dubai Duty Free, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all here at The Curragh Racecourse for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

A special word of thanks goes to Brian Kavanagh, CEO of The Curragh Racecourse, along with his dedicated management team and staff, for their continued hospitality and support it is always so greatly appreciated.

This year, we are proud to celebrate our 18th year as title sponsor of the Irish Derby, and our 24th year of association with this iconic venue This year also marks the incredible 160th anniversary of the running of this famous race The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby has firmly established itself as one of the premier races in the European calendar. With a prize fund of €1.25 million, it remains Ireland’s richest race and a highlight of the summer sporting season.

Also on today’s card is the Colm McLoughlin Celebration Stakes, a special race in memory of our former CEO and Executive Vice Chairman who led Dubai Duty Free for 41 years and sadly passed away in October of last year. Colm was a great champion of all things Irish and helped formed meaningful bonds between Ireland and the United Arab Emirates.

I am delighted that Colm’s wife Breeda, and his family are with us here today.

Since we were last at The Curragh, Dubai Duty Free celebrated its 41st Anniversary on 20th December 2024 and ended the year with record sales of US$2.164 billion. Building on these record sales, strong growth continues through the first half of 2025, with monthly revenues consistently surpassing each other. Currently, Dubai Duty Free’s revenue has crossed US$1 billion – reflecting a year-to-date increase of 6.5%.

We have also continued investing in the customer experience at Dubai International Airport, recently completing a major redesign and refurbishment of our Arrivals shops across all three terminals. This multi-million-dollar project has upgraded 60% of our Arrivals retail space, covering more than 2,171sqm. Looking ahead, we are excited about the opening of new boutiques including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Cartier in Terminal 3’s Concourse A.

Dubai Duty Free has also continued to promote Dubai as a leading business and leisure destination through its sponsorship of major sporting events including the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which we own and organize. This year’s tournament, which generated US$579 million in TV coverage, was won by Mirra Andreeva and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively, both of whom claimed their maiden Dubai titles

CURRAGH COMMENT

Recent Leopardstown winner MISSISSIPPI RIVER should prove hard to beat under a mandatory 7lb penalty Making all to win eased down by four and a quarter lengths, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was subsequently hit with a 10lb hike. However, as this race had already closed, he is able to race off 3lb lower and the blinkers which brought about definite improvement have been retained. Shiota, who beat Mississippi River at Naas earlier in the campaign, has every chance at these revised weights. Joseph Murphy’s filly followed that up with a victory at this track last time Its All Peachy could make her presence felt if first-time cheekpieces have the desired effect.

CURRAGH COMMENT

An eyecatching fifth on his stable debut here in May, RETRACEMENT is sure to have been targeted at this meeting. While the Johnny Murtagh-trained gelding raced over 10 furlongs on that occasion, he had winning form over this trip for previous connections. A strong traveller who sees out his races well, the four-year-old is likely to race more prominently over this shorter distance Slieve Binnian, who didn’t enjoy the clearest of passages over C&D last time, should be a leading contender Although only successful once from 20 starts on turf, the four-time all-weather winner looks more than adept. Chazzesmee and State Actor are sure to have come on from their seasonal reappearances.

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

The first three home at Epsom renew rivalry and LAMBOURN is taken to again come out on top over Lazy Griff and Tennessee Stud. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt was confirming previous Chester form with the runner-up and is likely to again be ridden prominently with stamina clearly proven. Tennessee Stud kept on well from an unpromising position and could now get closer, while Pride Of Arras reportedly didn’t handle the track at Epsom and previously impressed in the Dante at York. Green Impact lost a shoe in the 2000 Guineas, but bounced back to score over 1m1f at Leopardstown and could be a threat to all if staying this trip Puppet Master won the Lingfield Derby Trial and has scope for further improvement.

Course winner BELLAPHINA gained a third career success over this distance at Fairyhouse last autumn and has shown plenty of promise on both outings this season. She enjoys a sizeable swing at the weights having finished third to Mataariki at Gowran and subsequently didn’t enjoy much luck in running at Limerick. Bella Isabella won a Cork maiden over this trip before finishing third in a Leopardstown Group 3 and is an interesting contender on her handicap debut. Murkala and Sweet Chariot are also noted.

La Vita Nova filled the runner-up spot over 1m6f here last month with COMMON PRACTICE just over a length behind in third and Brosna Town close up in fourth. The Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding has been mainly campaigned over jumps in the past few years and is now fitted with blinkers for the first time after finishing strongly on that latest start.
