Curragh Racecard - Sunday 24th May

Page 1

I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our second Classic of the 2026 Irish flat racing season – the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas as well as the prestigious Tattersalls Gold Cup.

Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.

I would also like to thank our race sponsors Revamp Conservation and Restoration, Irish Stallion Farms, Kilkea Castle Hotel, Lanwades Stud, BYD at Finlay Motors Group, Velo Coffee, Cavalor Equine Nutrition and of course our feature race sponsors Tattersalls who are great supporters of Irish racing.

We were delighted last year to announce a three-year extension of our partnership with Tattersalls which covers the three Group 1 races over Guineas weekend and the Owners and Trainers Lounge here at the Curragh.

We are grateful to all of the Tattersalls team for their consistent support of the Curragh.

Once again, we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh this year and are delighted at the number of English trained runners throughout the weekend – you are very welcome, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh.

Our two Group1 feature races are part of the Tote World Pool and we are grateful to our friends in the Hong Kong Jockey Club for this partnership. The larger pools should increase the odds of many horses, so good luck with your choices.

As well as the racing, there is plenty of entertainment off track including “Conversations with Daragh Ó Conchúir” on our Champions Hall Stage, Nitetrain in Lilywhites Lounge and various activities to keep mini racegoers occupied in the Moyglare Kids Zone.

Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.

Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

Around The PaddockA Simple Guide

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

SUN GODDESS was a fast finisher over 5f on her debut at Naas and can put that experience to good use The Sioux Nation filly powered home to dead-heat for a close second and would have been up in another couple of strides. That promising effort came against colts and the extra furlong looks sure to suit. Lan De Ghaire has been beaten no more than a length on both starts and is likely to go well. All five newcomers, including 950,000gns yearling Snowing, hold entries in a Group 2 over C&D next month, so this has the makings of a hot contest.

CURRAGH COMMENT

The form of the C&D maiden won by GREAT BARRIER REEF hasn’t been enhanced by those who finished behind him, but the No Nay Never colt was visually impressive as he scooted clear to post a six-length victory Races like the Coventry and Dewhurst were mentioned in the aftermath, and it will be a surprise if he’s not better suited by the likely quicker ground on this occasion. Edward Thatch won easily over 5f at Cork and is another who will likely be encountering a sounder surface Otherworldly had a luckless passage when second to Immortal Guard over C&D and could reverse the form.

CURRAGH COMMENT

PREVALENCE and Green Carrera finished upsides when placed over 7f here earlier in the month and the former can come out on top in the rematch. A maiden winner on the all-weather in November, Ger Lyons’ runner did plenty wrong last time, losing ground at the start and difficult to settle, but came home well enough to suggest that stepping up in trip will suit. Green Carrera is already proven over this trip and is respected along with Mayflower, who has performed creditably in a pair of Group 3 races this term.

LANWADES HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Fifth in last year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas over C&D, the lightly-raced CITY OF MEMPHIS has won both starts this season and can continue her progression. The Sioux Nation filly won a Group 3 over 7f at Leopardstown earlier in the month and stepping back up to a mile shouldn’t be an issue Jancis was a revelation when landing a Group 2 over 1m1f at Newmarket and she’s expected to have her say A stablemate of the selection, One Look was a first-time-out winner last term and should also be considered.

CUP FACTS&STATS

OVERVIEW

The Tattersalls Gold Cup is one of Ireland’s most prestigious middle-distance races. First run in 1962, this Group 1 contest has long been regarded as a key early-season championship test for elite horses aged over three years and regularly attracts the best talent from Ireland, Britain and beyond.

The race has produced many outstanding winners and amongst the most memorable was Daylami, who captured the prize in 1998 before going on to enjoy a remarkable career that included victories in the Eclipse, Coronation Cup, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and the Breeders Cup Turf Another outstanding name on the list of honours is the 2001 winner Fantastic Light.

No discussion of this race would be complete without mentioning the dominance of Aidan O’Brien and his 11 winners in this race Magical’s dual victories in 2019 and 2020 will have been a particular highlight for the legendary trainer

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

Los Angeles followed nicely on from his Mooresbridge success here earlier in the month to pick up a big win here and continue Aidan O’Brien’s tremendous success in this contest. With Ryan Moore in the saddle the fouryear-old son of Camelot was prominent throughout, leading from inside the final two furlongs. He was briefly caught inside the final furlong but kept on well to secure the win.

Just half a length behind in second was Anmaat. The Owen Burrows trained gelding had a strong race under Jim Crowley, waiting towards the rear and biding his time He made a late charge for the front but couldn’t find enough to fend off Los Angeles. Andrew Balding’s Kalpana took third.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

11 of the last 12 winners were aged 4 or 5

5 of the last 12 winners were trained by Aidan O’Brien

8 of the last 12 winners had won at the Curragh before

Aidan O’Brien has trained 11 winners of this race throughout his career and this year he has a great chance of making it 12 with the well-fancied Minnie Hauk. The four-year-old daughter of Frankel had a fantastic 2025, racking up multiple Group 1 successes including the Oaks at Epsom, the Irish Oaks here at Curragh and the Yorkshire Oaks at York. After her impressive display in taking the Mooresbridge here earlier this month she will be the one to beat. Heading up the British contingent will be Almaqam and Saddadd. The former, trained by Ed Walker, has to yet to feature this season but put forward a top effort when third in the Champion Stakes in October and will be a contender here Saddadd was a strong winner in a Sandown Group 3 last month and there is certainly more to come from Roger Varian’s colt.

CURRAGH COMMENT

MINNIE HAUK enjoyed a tremendous campaign last season completing the Oaks/Irish Oaks double and adding a further Group 1 victory at York for good measure The Frankel filly lost nothing in defeat when beaten a head by Daryz in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and warmed up for this test with a comfortable win in a Group 2 here earlier this month. Almaqam also showed smart form last year finishing off the season with a fine third behind Calandagan in the Champion Stakes at Ascot, while Bay City Roller was a wide-margin winner of a Group 1 on soft ground in Germany Saddadd should also be considered for the places.

WIN: MINNIE HAUK

RACESPONSOR

DANGER: Almaqam

Edmond Mahony, Chairman Tattersalls will present a trophy to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and €200 to the groom in charge of the winning horse and a €200 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out. A member of the Rogers Family will present the Rogers Perpetual Trophy to the winning owner.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

IRISH1000GUINEAS FACTS&STATS

OVERVIEW

The Irish 1000 Guineas is the second of the prestigious Irish Classic races. Run over a mile, this race is for three-year-old fillies. First established in 1922 where Lady Violette took the win, it serves as Ireland’s equivalent of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The roll of honour of this race includes Pidget in 1972 who scored here en route to completing an impressive double with her success in the Irish St Leger that same year In 2004, Attraction became the first horse to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 2000 Guineas, a monumental achievement. Finsceal Beo became the second to achieve this feat in 2007 Arguably the most famous winner in recent years was Winter who completed the Guineas double in 2017

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

The 2025 renewal of this contest saw Aidan O’Brien’s well-backed favourite Lake Victoria produce the win in impressive style. The threeyear-old raced prominently throughout the contest, sitting on the inner and waiting for room. Ryan Moore edged his mount left from two furlongs out and the filly pushed into the lead inside the final furlong. There was no catching her from here and she took the win comfortably.

California Dreamer was a surprise in second, Adrian Murray’s filly went off at a massive 50/1. She led for almost the entire race and was just headed by Lake Victoria in the final furlong; despite her best efforts she was no match for the winner but took a clear second.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

Seven of the last 12 winners had at least one previous run here

Six of the last 12 winners ran in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket

A strong field of 12 goes to the post here and it’s hard to look past True Love Aidan O’Brien’s No Nay Never filly has been in superb form this season with wins in the Priory Belle Stakes at Leopardstown and the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. This three-year-old will take some stopping. Her biggest threat may be stablemate Precise who rounded off her two-year-old season with an easy win in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. She struggled when seventh in the 1000 Guineas but should be better here. The lightly raced Abashiri looks to be the pick of the British runners. Charlie Appleby’s Frankel filly will be starting for just the third time here today though will need to find more than she did at Newmarket earlier this month. Recent Newbury winner Sukanya is another to keep an eye on after her successful return to action last month.

CURRAGH COMMENT

TRUE LOVE was a speedy juvenile winning the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Cheveley Park at Newmarket, before dispelling any worries about her staying a mile last time when finishing strongly to land the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. The daughter of No Nay Never holds both Abashiri and Precise on that form but the latter, who was the champion two-year-old filly, had an interrupted preparation this spring and may now get a lot closer Magny Cours and Pivotal Attack filled the places behind the selection at Leopardstown last month, while America Queen and Black Caviar Gold are the pick of the remainder

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way

This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place

Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

CURRAGH COMMENT

SUMMER ISLAND made a successful start for Natalia Lupini over this trip at Dundalk in February and is improving at a rate of knots judged by his latest outing here over 7f when quickening clear inside the final furlong, with Java Wood back in fifth. Highbury See See won over C&D last autumn and again shaped well here last month, but is probably best suited by softer ground. Spanish Temptress also comes here in good form, but is another who would appreciate an ease Others to consider include Greek Flower and Thaloria.

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Willie Mullins is a good starting point when trying to solve a staying Flat handicap and he relies on two interesting contenders in STORM HEART and Highwind. The former hasn’t run on the Flat since easily winning a maiden in France over three years ago but has proved a smart sort over hurdles, winning the Grade 3 Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran. Highwind was fourth behind Alba Chiara in the Ulster Cesarewitch at Down Royal last September and now meets that rival on considerably better terms. Kilmeaden and Kingstonian filled the minor placings behind Saratoga over a similar trip at Listowel last autumn, and Kingstonian ran a cracker when reappearing in the Chester Plate earlier this month.
