Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer Handicap Rating

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Around The Paddock A Simple Guide A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

CURRAGH COMMENT

ABLETAI improved for dropping in trip on his second start, finishing just a head behind the classy Carry The Flag. Although his subsequent effort at Listed level was slightly underwhelming, this Phoenix Stakes-entered colt sets the standard with an official rating of 93. Atlantic Bridge cost 300,000 euro at a breeze-up sale in May and comes from a speedy family, while Bold Commander progressed from his debut when second at Bellewstown and is entitled to have more to offer.

CURRAGH COMMENT STAR PERFORMER gets the vote on debut for Joseph O’Brien, whose yard remains in excellent form. A 160,000-euro breeze-up purchase for Michael Tabor, the daughter of Sea The Stars has the pedigree and connections to make an immediate impact under Dylan Browne McMonagle. White Sand Beach has had nine starts and an official rating of 81. She continues to knock on the door, including when runner-up at Killarney on Monday, and she is respected, along with stable companion Cape Primrose, who showed promise last year behind Green Carrera but is yet to show that level of form in two outings this year.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT IBELIEVEICANFLY has contested two of the strongest maidens run this season and has bumped into two smart fillies. The Frankel filly was favourite on debut but could only manage fourth before chasing home her stable companion Alpha on her second start. That was still a very good run and she should take plenty of beating on this occasion. Alpine Wedding finished behind the selection on debut and, holding Moyglare and Debutante entries, she is expected to come forward from that experience, while the impeccably-bred Sparkles is worth noting for the future.

WIN: IBELIEVEICANFLY

TWO THEGLENROYALHOTELAND SHODACAFÉMINSTRELSTAKES PRIZE MONEY €130,000

OVERVIEW

KEY TRENDS

The Minstrel Stakes is one of Ireland’s leading summer contests for milers and specialist seven-furlong performers. Run over 7 furlongs, the Group 2 race is open to thoroughbreds aged three years and older and takes place each July as part of the track’s high-quality midsummer programme.

10 of the last 12 winners were aged 4 or older

Named in honour of the outstanding Irish-trained racehorse The Minstrel, winner of the Derby and Irish Derby in 1977, the race has undergone several changes since its inception. Originally staged at Phoenix Park over a mile for three-yearolds, it moved to the Curragh in 1991, was opened to older horses and later shortened to its current distance of 7 furlongs. It was promoted to Group 2 status in 2016. The race has attracted a number of top-class performers over the years, with recent winners including dual winners Romanised and Order Of Australia, as well as future Group 1 winner Diego Velazquez.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

10/12 winners were in the top 3 in the betting 9/12 winners had at least 1 win in a group 1-3 race

2025 winner: Diego Velazquez.

Dropping back into Group 2 company, Diego Velazquez showed his class 12 months ago when coming home a comfortable winner under Ryan Moore. Breaking well from the stalls, the Aidan O’Brien runner was sent into a share of the lead before eventually settling just behind the pacesetter, California Dreamer. Moore was one of the first to make his move, quickly sending the eventual winner to challenge the long-time leader. East Hampton emerged as the biggest threat, closing to within a short head of the Ballydoyle runner, but Diego Velazquez’s class ultimately shone through as he held his rival to land the Group 2 prize.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

ROLL OF HONOUR 2016-2025

Ten-time course winner Big Gossey once again lines up in search of an eleventh success. Last time out, he justified favouritism in the Listed Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables Dash, scoring by just under a length following a fine ride from Billy Lee. Lee retains the partnership aboard the Charles O’Brien-trained sprinter, who arrives here with every chance of adding another Curragh victory to his impressive record. British raider Audience was only narrowly denied in the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown last time out. A proven performer over this distance, he remains a dangerous opponent despite now being in the latter stages of his career. East Hampton has gone close on several occasions at the Curragh, finishing in the first three on each of his last three starts over course and distance. He looks almost certain to give another good account of himself, and this could be the day he returns to the winner’s enclosure. Power Blue looks the pick of the two three-year-olds in the field. He drops back into much calmer waters after contesting three consecutive Group 1 races and should find this company far more manageable. YEAR

CURRAGH COMMENT

POWER BLUE ran with plenty of credit when fourth in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot and the drop in class represents a fine opportunity for the Amo colt to get back to winning ways. Audience bounced back to form when runner-up at Leopardstown last time and if he gets an easy time in front, the former Lockinge winner may prove difficult to peg back under Colin Keane. Course legend Big Gossey seeks to gain another success here after a heroic effort most recently and he may prove reliable for place prospects.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3 Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4 27

CURRAGH COMMENT Runner-up over 7f here last month, MALLAVELLY can go one better. Keeping on well close home on that occasion, the Ger Lyons-trained mare should appreciate stepping back up to a mile now. The form of that race has already received a significant boost with the winner going on to land a Listed contest at Killarney earlier in the week. Successful in the corresponding race last year, Pink Oxalis has almost certainly been laid out for a repeat. Despite not coming into this in the same form as 12 months ago, the five-year-old has to be respected. An unexposed three-year-old, Kirkland Sioux also warrants attention in a competitive affair.

TWO THE1XBET.IE PROUD SUPPORTERS OF IRISH RACING CURRAGH CUP PRIZE MONEY €130,000

OVERVIEW

KEY TRENDS

The Curragh Cup is one of Ireland’s leading staying contests, bringing together top-class middle and long-distance performers each summer. Run over 1 mile and 6 furlongs, the Group 2 race is open to thoroughbreds aged three years and older. First staged in 1987, the race was initially run at Listed level before being promoted to Group 3 status in 1994. Its growing prestige was recognised with a further upgrade to Group 2 in 2016, cementing its place among Europe’s leading staying races.

8 of the last 12 winners were aged 4 or older 10/12 winners had their last run within the last 34 days

The Curragh Cup boasts an impressive roll of honour, with notable winners including Vintage Crop, Daliapour, Kastoria, Red Cadeaux and Rekindling. Often serving as a stepping stone to major staying prizes such as the Irish St. Leger back here at the Curragh in September.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

8/12 winners had at least 1 win in a group 1-3 race

2025 winner: Al Riffa

Al Riffa proved himself a level above his rivals when scoring by an impressive five lengths under Dylan Browne McMonagle for Joseph O’Brien. The five-year-old was anchored near the rear of the field, where he had only two behind him for much of the contest. Drawn To Dream set honest enough fractions for Seamie Heffernan, with around six lengths separating the field as they turned into the home straight. Shackleton was first to challenge under Ryan Moore and despite being headed, did battle back gamely to claim second however he was only ever playing for a place, with the impervious Al Riffa coming home a ready winner, after a sustained run down the outside of the field.

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

ROLL OF HONOUR 2016-2025

2025 winner Al Riffa returns to defend his crown for Joseph O’Brien and will once again be partnered by regular rider Dylan Browne McMonagle. He was a class above his rivals 12 months ago, but now, as a six-yearold, he must defy a trend that has seen no horse of that age win this race since 2019. Previous dual winners are a common feature of this contest, however, so it would come as no surprise were this classy performer to successfully defend his title. Illinois produced a game performance to land the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot. He now drops back markedly in trip, but the talented son of Galileo possesses more than enough ability to make his presence felt in a race of this nature. Tennessee Stud was a little disappointing at Down Royal last time, although he has already proven himself at Group 2 level. Quicker ground may not bring out the best in him, and Joseph O’Brien will be hoping for some rain to enhance his chances of success. YEAR

2025 - 1st Al Riffa (FR) 2nd Shackleton 3rd Drawn To Dream (3 min. 1.8 sec.)

CURRAGH COMMENT AL RIFFA can make it back-to-back wins in this race. An impressive scorer on his first try at this trip in last year’s renewal, the Joseph O’Brien-trained six-year-old went on to land the Irish St Leger over C&D on his next start. Having run with credit in both the Melbourne Cup and Hong Kong Vase after, the son of Wootton Bassett has raced over further this season. Dropping back to this distance should see him hard to beat. Queen Alexandra Stakes winner Illinois rates the main danger. A thorough stayer, the son of Galileo may just be vulnerable to one with a better turn of foot, while Green Impact also has to be of interest stepping up in distance.

DANGER: Illinois

2025 - 1st Stop The Nation 2nd Which Wolf Wins 3rd Gavoo (1 min. 14.2 sec.)

CURRAGH COMMENT Highly tried since winning his maiden over the minimum trip here in April, LARS SOLDIER can defy top-weight. With both the second and third horses in that aforementioned contest going on to score next time, the form of that particular contest looks strong. Wesley Joyce takes a valuable 3lb off here and an opening mark of 86 looks fair. Equipped with first-time cheekpieces and with Colin Keane a significant booking, I Ready has to be a leading contender. Gelded since last seen, Seven Nation Army is one that could improve on what he has shown to date. Any market support for the Joseph O’Brien-trained representative should be noted.

WIN: LARS SOLDIER

DANGER: I Ready

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

35

RACE SEVEN

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Just touched off at Cork on his seasonal debut, ABBOTSFORD can make amends. A twice-raced son of Frankel, the Dermot Weld-trained gelding kept on strongly last time, suggesting that the extra distance will be very much in his favour here. Runner-up at this track last time, the Donnacha O’Brien-trained Numantia should appreciate stepping up in trip. Another to take minor honours on her most recent start, Sakoku shouldn’t be far away. Having stepped up considerably on her first run, the Johnny Murtagh-trained filly could still have more to offer.

WIN: ABBOTSFORD

DANGER: Numantia

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race! VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

37

RACE EIGHT

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.
