The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

Around The PaddockA Simple Guide

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

CURRAGH COMMENT

BLIXEN FORCE has the benefit of a run, which could prove crucial. The Persian Force colt was sent off favourite for the Brocklesby at Doncaster just over three weeks ago and showed some greenness when asked for his effort over a furlong from home It was a promising run to finish third to A Bear Affair and he can build on it. Stablemate Belle Island has performed well on the all-weather and the soft ground presents a different challenge Ballydoyle newcomer Carry The Flag also has to be on the shortlist. The No Nay Never colt was a €250,000 yearling and is a half-brother to a Listed winner

CURRAGH COMMENT

NOBLE NATION may be able to bag a follow-up win here He travelled strongly when scoring at Naas four weeks ago and was perhaps value for a bit more than his winning margin suggests. The form has been boosted recently with the runner-up Exceeding scoring at Leopardstown on Wednesday Stag Night has run well here on two outings this season and is only 1lb higher than when chasing home Bodhi Bear latest. He looks like a potential danger, likewise Shadow Of The Moon, who was an easy maiden winner when last seen.

CURRAGH COMMENT

GREAT BARRIER REEF was one of the two-year-olds Aidan O’Brien flagged up at his media morning a few weeks back and the No Nay Never colt may be able to make a winning debut here. He is a full-brother to Superlative Stakes winner Mystery Power and could be Royal Ascot material. Bull Shark has a run under his belt and is a big player He didn’t trouble the front two on his debut here last month but it was a promising effort and the fourth horse has won since Joseph O’Brien’s newcomer Santerno also makes some appeal.

CURRAGH COMMENT

ALNOFOOR comes here in fine form and may be able to bag another win before the handicapper catches up with him. The Twilight Son gelding was well backed when winning on his return at Navan and followed that up with a convincing success at Bellewstown eight days ago Going back up in trip doesn’t look like an issue and another bold showing looks assured. Bint Majestic Roi ran well when fourth over course and distance 16 days ago That was her first start over a sprint trip and she could improve from the experience, while it’s worth keeping an eye on Astute Power as well.

CURRAGH COMMENT

ROYAL RHYME has some very strong Group 1 form in the book. He only made the track twice last season and was a commendable fifth to Los Angeles in the Tattersalls Gold Cup here last May The pick of his form is a third-placed effort in the Champion Stakes at Ascot in October 2024. He has an absence to overcome, but should appreciate this ground. Green Impact is another interesting one on his return. He picked up an injury after finishing fourth in the York Stakes last July, but is a talented sort and could play a big role Group 1-winning two-year-old Twain is a fascinating runner, but may be best watched after a long absence

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4

CURRAGH COMMENT

STARMAN TOM shaped with plenty of promise on his debut at Cork and can step forward. The Starman gelding overcame a tardy start to chase home cosy winner Cardiff By The Sea and that form looks strong as the winner was fourth in the Queen Mary last season. The highest rated of those with official marks is the Jessica Harrington-trained Thenandnow Her best run came on her debut over 7f at Leopardstown, but she had some decent efforts subsequently and is entitled to play a big role in this company Cactus would be one of the lesser lights in Ballydoyle, but she has some decent placed form and could get involved.

CURRAGH COMMENT

RED CHARLIE got a fair hike for his easy win here just over three weeks ago, but may be able to follow up The US-bred gelding, who was a four-and-three-quarter-length victor over C&D in testing conditions, remains very unexposed and may be able to defy the 15lb rise Mickey The Steel, who chased him home, is now a stone better off so is entitled to give him a bit more to think about. Merisi Diamond was third in that race so has to come into calculations, especially in first-time cheekpieces. Recent Bellewstown winner Lahore Da King also has to be on the shortlist.

HAMIYAN had some nice runs in maidens last term and doesn’t look harshly treated off a mark of 79 on his second handicap start. The Wootton Bassett gelding was placed twice from four runs, including when third to recent Ballysax winner Christmas Day at Gowran Park. Boston Benjamin brings winning form into the race, having scored at Dundalk back in February He remains unexposed and Colin Keane is an eyecatching booking. Closely weakened on her comeback run in a maiden here last month, but it would be no surprise if she stepped forward with that outing under her belt.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!
