I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the opening day of the 2026 Irish flat racing season our St. Patrick’s Festival Race Day. We are delighted to be back racing here at the Curragh and are looking forward to a great season ahead. This year we will arace 24 times between today and November 1st with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 28th. With the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our sponsors we have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed and Group races and our better class handicaps. Today’s race sponsors are the Irish European Breeders Fund, Capital Stud, 1xBet and Nua Healthcare Services who sponsor five races including our feature race the Irish Lincolnshire for the third time. Your support is greatly appreciated, and I hope you have a great day. I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We hope you will relax and enjoy your day at the Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the grandstand. Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand. There is plenty of family entertainment throughout the enclosures today, including the Moyglare Kidzone as well as food and beverage outlets. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Newbridge Gospel Choir and Nitetrain. We race here again at the Curragh in two weeks’ time on Saturday 28th March when our feature race will be the 1xBet.ie Gladness Stakes. We look forward to welcoming you back here that day and regularly during the 2026 flat season. Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing. Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive bkavanagh@curragh.ie

Official Handicap Rating

Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

In memorIam As this is our first race meeting of 2026, the Curragh Racecourse wishes to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of three people who sadly passed away in recent months. In different ways, all three had a close connection with the Curragh and will be sadly missed and remembered with affection.

edward (eddIe) harty Edward (Eddie) Harty was an inspirational man who contributed to the Irish horse racing and sport horse industries in so many ways. He holds a unique record of having represented Ireland in the Olympic Games and also ridden the winner of the Grand National. He trained for many years here on the Curragh a tradition now being successfully continued by his son Edward and grandson Patrick. He was also closely involved with the Newbridge Community Race Day held here every year as well as the Newbridge Lions Club. We would also like to extend our sympathy to the Harty Family on the passing of Eddie’s wife Patricia.

doctor andrew heffernan Doctor Andrew Heffernan was a regular and welcome visitor to the Curragh right up to the end of last season. He was a highly respected consultant endocrinologist and held a trainer’s licence for many years. Andrew enjoyed many successes as a racehorse owner both in his own right and through the family’s HOS Syndicate.

werner mayerhofer Werner Mayerhofer is a name that racegoers may not recognise, however as husband to Jean Monahan, a key member of our racecourse staff, we were all deeply saddened by Werner’s passing at an early age last month. Jean and her son Dean are very much in our thoughts as we resume racing here at the Curragh today.

CURRAGH COMMENT Newly-licensed Robson De Aguiar runs four in this season’s opener and his yard might win it for the fourth consecutive year with FORCE NOIR, who is first string on jockey bookings. Sold for 68,000 euros and 130,000 euros respectively as a foal and a yearling, he is a half-brother to five winners, including a Listed victor, and while he encounters testing ground, he will know his job. Stablemates Bull Shark, a half-brother to a Group-placed winner, and What A Girl Wants, a half-sister to four winners, were also each purchased from Tally-Ho Stud and could be capable. Equus Victor is out of a winning mare who has produced a black-type performer and is stallion Blackbeard’s first runner.

CURRAGH COMMENT BREAKING DAWN showed ability last autumn and can put that experience to good use. A 47,000gns breeze-up purchase, he is a half-brother to two winners and although no star, he ran nicely on both starts, has shown an ability to handle easy ground, and Colin Keane rides. Monmouth is out of a Listed-winning sister to smart performers Gustav Klimt and Wonderfully, but it is a small negative that he was listed - albeit subsequently withdrawn - from a horses-in-training sale last October. Fate’s Gambit disappointed at Dundalk last month and now encounters heavy ground.

WIN: BREAKING DAWN

DANGER: Monmouth

CURRAGH COMMENT MICKEY THE STEEL relishes testing conditions and will be ready for this early-season reappearance. A five-time winner, he is now an eight-year-old but held his form last autumn. Jon Riggens is another eight-year-old with solid claims, as three of his four wins have come at this course. He also handles heavy ground and should compete, despite having to carry 10 stone. Two And Two runs in a first-time hood and scored over this distance at Dundalk in January, but now encounters contrasting ground conditions.

DANGER: Jon Riggens

WIN: MICKEY THE STEEL

RACE SPONSOR

Dannika McCartney representing Nua Healthcare will present a trophy to the winning owner and a gift to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look

RACE THREE

after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?

C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Curragh may suggest that it will run well again today. D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit. CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Curragh but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards. C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course. BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today. 22

CURRAGH COMMENT DMANIAC is at his best on heavy ground at this course and remains capable of further progression as a four-year-old. He is generally consistent and while he has won just once from 10 starts, that success came on his latest start in October and connections will have had this race in mind since. Staysound Susie also goes well on easy ground and while she too scored on her latest start here, she is more exposed than the selection. Unique Journey can also go well.

CURRAGH COMMENT SIGNORA makes her first start since finishing mid-division in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last June. The Frankel filly was sent off favourite that day having made a very promising debut in Group 3 company at Naas the previous month. The form of that race has worked out well as the winner Lady Iman went on to score again at the same level, while runner-up Green Sense was a Group 2 winner in France. Girl Bear was third on her debut at Galway in a decent contest, but that form wouldn’t look anywhere near as strong. Feel The Love, a St Mark’s Basilica half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Fancy Blue, is a newcomer to note.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place. The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake. Another common bet is each-way. This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows: All races of less than 5 runners – win only All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2 All other races of more than 8 runners – 1/5, 1,2,3 Handicaps of 12-15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3

RACE FIVE

Handicaps of more than 15 runners – 1/4 , 1,2,3,4

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race! VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them. CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision. EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision. HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes. NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process. TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

KEY TRENDS

One of the traditional curtain-raisers to the Irish Flat season. Run over a mile and open to horses aged four and older, this competitive handicap provides an early test for many of Ireland and Britain’s leading yards.

Only three winning favourites in the last 10 years

Recent runnings underline the race’s competitive nature. Orandi produced a powerful late surge to land the 2025 renewal under Shane Foley, while the British raider Lattam struck in dramatic fashion for trainer William Haggas in 2023. Earlier winners include Layfayette, who used victory here as a springboard to a strong season in higher company, and the decisive 2016 scorer Sruthan. With its large fields, unpredictable pace scenarios and the promise of improving horses returning from winter breaks, the Irish Lincolnshire continues to be one of the most fascinating handicaps of the Irish racing calendar and an ideal way to signal the return of the Flat turf season.

PRIZE MONEY

9 of the past 10 winners were Irish trained

8 of the past 10 winners were aged 4-6

LAST YEAR’S WINNER Victory went to Orandi, trained by Tony Martin and ridden by Shane Foley. Sent off at odds of 10/1, the seven-year-old was held up in the rear during the early stages before making strong late headway in the straight. After briefly meeting traffic two furlongs from home, Orandi produced a powerful run inside the final furlong to take the lead and stay on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length. Kortez Bay finished second after briefly disputing the lead approaching the final furlong, while Smooth Tom stayed on well from off the pace to claim third, almost five lengths behind the leading pair. 2025 winner: Orandi (right)

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

ROLL OF HONOUR 2016-2025

Andrew Slattery’s Eastwatch is looking a popular option in the betting, with the four-year-old widely tipped to kick on in his four-year-old season. A strong winner at Gowran Park in June, he could be a contender here. Last year’s winner Orandi could be the biggest contender though, he was excellent in this last year and while winless since, his experience could be enough to see him through. Highbury See See scored over this course and distance on his latest outing back in October, and this stablemate of Eastwatch is another with strong claims. Engines On has claims too, the six-year-old was an impressive winner here in September. YEAR

CURRAGH COMMENT ENGINES ON has won twice at the Curragh and likes a good dig in the ground. He finished last season with a victory over 7f here and was value for a bit more than his winning margin. The Sioux Nation gelding ran a cracker in the Irish Cambridgeshire over this trip previously and there looks to be a nice prize in him this season. Ribee was progressive in testing conditions last autumn and is another who could still be on an upward curve. Top-weight Big Gossey rarely runs a bad race, but may be vulnerable against less-exposed types. Tuscan Hill was a Listed winner in soft ground and is an interesting contender on his first outing for Robson De Aguiar.

WIN: ENGINES ON

DANGER: Ribee

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests. For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals. The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

CURRAGH COMMENT NAVINSKY was just edged out late on when second at Navan in September and may be able to go one better now. The Zarak gelding went down by a neck to Railwayview Lady that day and had recent Cheltenham Festival winner Saratoga back in third. Ryan Moore rides Scientific so he looks the pick of the Ballydoyle newcomers. The Wootton Bassett colt is a half-brother to Group 3 winners Taniyar, Tanaza and Tarawa. Stablemate Shaftesbury Avenue is a half-brother to three-time US Grade 1 winner Up To The Mark, while Spanish Rising is another to consider.

CURRAGH COMMENT KAKORI showed progression last season and may be able to make a winning return here. The Le Havre filly stayed on nicely to finish fifth in testing conditions on her handicap debut at Gowran last October. The four-year-old looks open to further improvement this term. La Tulipe Noire ran well over seven furlongs here in November and she’s capable of getting involved. Former C&D winner Starting Monday is a fairly consistent sort and is another who could make his presence felt.

DANGER: La Tulipe Noire

WIN: KAKORI
