There are very few meetings anywhere that can offer so many elite races in such a short period of time. They will range from the sprint of the Bar 1 Betting Flying Five Stakes to the long-distance Comer Group International Irish St Leger. We are all most grateful to our race sponsors over both days of Irish Champions Festival, and to the owners of runners across the weekend. Those owners, their trainers and their jockeys give us all so much to look forward to in each of the eight races this afternoon, and I wish them all the very best of luck. Around The Paddock A Simple Guide A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign
Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race
A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip
A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight
A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears
Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)
A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT Bear On The Run continued her upward trajectory when making a winning handicap bow over C&D last month and a hat-trick cannot be dismissed. Although a 2lb rise is unlikely to prevent another bold showing from the three-year-old, the battle-hardened COUL ANGEL is more appealing. Mick Appleby’s gelding arrives on the back of two creditable efforts in defeat in competitive York sprints and compensation may beckon. Reopposing winner Sondad is 5lb worse off with the selection after finishing a length ahead, but warrants respect given his triumph here in July. Keke and Genesis are others of interest.
WIN: COUL ANGEL
DANGER: Bear On The Run

CURRAGH COMMENT Leopardstown maiden winner STAR OF STATE took a step forward to hit the woodwork in the Lowther at last month’s Ebor Festival, and she’s likely to take all the beating on these terms. Atlantic Bridge is rated 12lb lower than the selection but is probably still the main threat following a convincing win at Navan. It’s interesting that Karl Burke opts to send two here, though Mehmas Star appears to be his leading hope after a debut full of promise at Carlisle.

The Moyglare Stud Stakes
FACT FILE: A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR’S RACE
Precise followed up her Group 3 Prestige Stakes triumph at Goodwood by securing her first Group 1 success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. While market attention centred on the short-priced favourite Composing, it was Aidan O’Brien’s second string who stole the show. Under a determined ride from Ronan Whelan, Precise fended off her stablemate Beautify, who battled all the way to the finish, to land another success for the Ballydoyle operation.
DISTANCE

PRIZE MONEY

GUINEAS GLORY In recent years, this race has proven to be a strong indicator for both the Irish and English 1000 Guineas. Minding was the first notable recent winner, going on to claim victory in the 2016 1000 Guineas. She was later followed by another Ballydoyle filly, Love, who triumphed in 2020. Furthermore, three of the last four winners of the Irish 1,000 Guineas - Tahiyra, Fallen Angel and Lake Victoria - had all won this race the previous year.
BRITISH SUCCESS
BREEDERS’ CUP
Despite the strong Irish dominance, a handful of British trainers have successfully brought this race back across the Irish Sea. Henry Cecil’s Chimes Of Freedom claimed a high-profile victory in 1989, followed by winners such as Twafeaj (1991), Sayyedati (1992), Lemon Souffle (1993) and Bianca Nera (1996).
In 2009, the race was added to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, granting the winner an automatic invitation to the prestigious event. Sky Lantern was the first to take up the opportunity but could only finish eighth, despite being sent off as favourite.
More recently, notable British-trained winners include Sky Lantern in 2012 and 2023 winner Fallen Angel.
Since then, several others have made the journey, but it wasn’t until 2024 that one finally triumphed. Lake Victoria stormed to victory as the 7/10 favourite, breaking new ground for the race on American soil.

LEADING
TRAINERS?
Since 2000, no trainer has come close to challenging Aidan O’Brien’s dominant hold on this race. He has claimed eleven victories during that time, beginning with Sequoyah in 2000. This year, Aidan O’Brien is strongly represented once again, saddling strong favourite Sun Goddess, Ibelieveicanfly and Alpha. Before O’Brien’s era, wins were more evenly spread among various yards, with Jim Bolger, John Oxx and Vincent O’Brien each securing two victories by the turn of the century. Bolger has since added a third success with Saoirse Abu in 2007, though he still trails O’Brien by some margin. O’Brien’s sons, Donnacha and Joseph, have each registered a single win, but they have some way to go if they hope to match their father’s formidable record.
TOP OWNERS Given Ballydoyle’s dominance in the race, it comes as no surprise that Coolmore stands as the leading owner since 2000. During that period, they have celebrated 12 victories, including winners such as Sequoyah (2000), Necklace (2003), Rumplestiltskin (2005), Again (2008), Misty For Me (2010), Maybe (2011), Minding (2015), Happily (2017), Love (2019), Shale (2020) and Lake Victoria (2024) & most recently Precise (2025).
LEADING RIDER? Only one jockey has managed to ride four winners in this race - the legendary Christy Roche. His remarkable run came within a six-year span, starting with Tender Camilla in 1974 and culminating with Arctique Royale in 1980. Despite the passage of time and his retirement from the saddle, no other jockey has yet matched his tally. However, Ryan Moore currently sits on two wins and today rides Sun Goddess.
WHO ARE THE
SPONSORS? 39
Moyglare Stud was founded in 1962 by Walter Haefner, a passionate and accomplished horseman. Remarkably, in 1963, at the age of 53, he was crowned Fegentri Champion Amateur. Beyond his success in the saddle, Haefner was a dedicated supporter of Irish racing, making significant contributions through his involvement with The Turf Club, RACE and the Irish Equine Centre. In 1973, he established the Moyglare Stud Stakes, a race that now boasts one of the longest-running sponsorships in global racing. His legacy continues through his daughter, Eva Maria, who proudly upholds the family tradition of breeding and racing top-class thoroughbreds.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

RACE THREE
Phoenix Stakes heroine SUN GODDESS met all sorts of trouble in the Harry’s Half Million at the Ebor Festival but it made no difference to the result, as she scythed through the field to record a resounding success. Stepping up to 7f should be no issue at all for the daughter of Sioux Nation, who can show her class once again to enhance an ever-improving CV. Green Empress has chased home the selection twice this season before gaining a deserved success in the Debutante over C&D, and she is undoubtedly the main threat. Dancing Destiny (second) and Alpha (third) are others to note.

FACT FILE: A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR’S RACE
Ridden by David Egan, Arizona Blaze ended his career in style when landing last year’s renewal, becoming the first three-year-old to win the contest since Fairyland in 2019. Bouncing back from a below-par performance in the Nunthorpe, he had already shown a strong affinity for the Curragh and used that experience to his advantage, to claim his first success at the highest level.
DISTANCE
Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)
PRIZE MONEY
€400,000 €236,000 - winner
HISTORY OF THE RACE? The Flying Five Stakes, now sponsored by Bar One Betting, was established in 1985. Originally staged at Phoenix Park as a Listed race for horses aged two and upwards, it was also held at Leopardstown during its early history. As the race grew in stature, it moved to the Curragh in 2002 and continued its rise through the ranks. In 2018, the race was awarded Group 1 status, cementing its position as one of the most important races in the sprinting division.
KEY TRENDS
DUAL WINNERS?
• Horses trained in Britain have won the Flying Five three times in the last six years and four in the last eight.
The legendary Benbaun remains the most successful horse in the race’s history, having won three consecutive renewals between 2005 and 2007. Before that, Flowing, Tropical and Tedburrow all recorded back-to-back victories during the 90s.
• Four of the last ten winners were returned as favourite for the race.
In the modern era, however, there has yet to be another dual winner, and that record looks unlikely to change this year, with last year’s winner Arizona Blaze now retired to stud.
• Five of the last 10 winners were returned at 5/1 or shorter. • Eight of the last ten winners were drawn in stall 8 or lower, 44
LEADING
CONNECTIONS?
This race has consistently been fiercely competitive, making Dermot Weld’s achievement of five victories particularly impressive. He won the inaugural running with Committed in 1985 before embarking on a remarkable run of four further victories between 1991 and 1994. In more recent years, Aidan O’Brien has emerged as the leading trainer, recording three wins, most recently with Fairyland in 2019. Michael Kinane has also etched his name into the race’s history books, holding the record with six victories. Four of those came in partnership with Dermot Weld, while he also triumphed aboard Ishiguru and Ringmoor Down in the early 2000s. More recently, Ryan Moore has been the jockey to follow and today rides Mission Central.
WIN AND YOU’RE IN Alongside the Moyglare Stud Stakes, the Flying Five is part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” programme. Victory in the race earns the winner an automatic berth in the $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Numerous horses have attempted to conquer America, but only Glass Slippers has completed the double. Trained by Kevin Ryan, she powered home down the Del Mar straight under Tom Eaves to defeat the American speedsters on their own turf.
MOST SUCCESSFUL? One of the finest winners of the race was Caravaggio, who landed the contest as a three-year-old. In 2022, Highfield Princess established herself as the queen of the domestic sprinting scene. She boasts an outstanding résumé, with victories in the Prix Maurice de Gheest, Nunthorpe and this very race, highlighting a phenomenal career. Other notable winners include Benbaun, Reverence, Sole Power and Glass Slippers, all of whom have left their mark on this prestigious contest.

CURRAGH COMMENT TIME FOR SANDALS was desperately unlucky in the Nunthorpe and would have gone very close had she secured a clear passage, but can gain compensation on this occasion. Harry Eustace’s filly does have something to find with the July Cup winner Comanche Brave, though, and will need to be at the top of her game again. Starlust (second) and Rumstar (third) finished ahead of the selection on the Knavesmire and neither can be underestimated but nor can Night Raider, who should be well suited by this course and distance.

The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes
FACT FILE: A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR’S RACE
Zavateri maintained his unbeaten record, adding to back-to-back Group 2 wins in Britain with another terrier-like performance to strike on this first try at the top level. All the rage in the market was around the short-priced favourite Gstaad, who ran with plenty of credit under Christophe Soumillon to finish second. The pair battled out the finish to pull nicely clear of Italy, and were only separated by a head.
DISTANCE
Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
PRIZE MONEY
€400,000 €236,000 - Winner
WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE? Run over a distance of seven furlongs, this race regularly attracts the leading juvenile talent from both Ireland and Great Britain. As a result, it has become a reliable indicator of future Guineas winners, with many participants going on to excel over longer trips as they mature. Notable recent examples include Churchill, Gleneagles, Dawn Approach, George Washington.
HISTORY OF THE RACE First established in 1849, the race was originally known as the National Produce Stakes before later becoming the National Stakes. The inaugural running, held more than 170 years ago, was won by a horse named Chatterbox. Initially classified as a Group 2 race, the National Stakes was elevated to Group 1 status in 1985. It became part of the prestigious Irish Champions Weekend fixture in 2014. 52
MOST IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE ? In a remarkable performance, Godolphin’s exceptional colt Pinatubo demolished his rivals by an astonishing nine lengths in the 2019 renewal. He travelled effortlessly throughout the race and unleashed a devastating turn of foot to leave a field of high-class juveniles trailing in his wake.
LEADING
JOCKEYS
The late Lester Piggott left an indelible mark on the National Stakes, winning the race four times between Cellini in 1973 and Fatherland in 1992. That impressive tally was later matched by another riding legend, Michael Kinane, who also recorded four victories during his illustrious 34-year career, with his most memorable coming aboard the brilliant Hawk Wing. Among the current jockeys, William Buick leads the way with three wins in the famous Godolphin blue. Close behind are Ryan Moore and Declan McDonogh, both with two victories apiece.
HOW DO BRITISH RUNNERS FARE?
Despite Ballydoyle’s dominance in recent decades, Britishtrained runners have maintained a respectable record in the National Stakes. Barry Hills struck with Tap On Wood in 1978, followed eight years later by Lockton’s victory in 1986. In more recent times, Godolphin enjoyed a golden spell, capturing the race with Quorto in 2018, the brilliant Pinatubo in 2019, and Native Trail in 2021 - bringing their short but impactful run to a close, while Zavateri flew the flag again for Britain again last year.
LEADING TRAINERS? Vincent O’Brien holds a long-standing record in the National Stakes, having saddled an incredible 15 winners - a benchmark that has stood for decades. His dominance began with Sir Ivor in 1967 and included a remarkable hat-trick of successes from 1971 to 1973. His final triumphs came with El Prado in 1991 and Fatherland in 1992, just before his retirement from racing in 1994. However, that historic record is now under serious threat from Aidan O’Brien and the modern-day Coolmore operation. Over the past 28 years, Aidan has trained twelve National Stakes winners - an extraordinary achievement in its own right. His roll of honour includes generational talents such as Mastercraftsman, Gleneagles and Churchill. In this year’s renewal, he looks to Florida Bay, Giant Sequoia and the Acomb Stakes winner Haffner.

CURRAGH COMMENT Monogram’s debut win over this C&D could be the precursor to bigger things. The son of Kingman needs a big step forward in this much deeper event, but he might well possess the quality to do just that. However, both the Futurity Stakes winner GIANT SEQUOIA and Haffner, who impressed when winning the Acomb at York, have more proven credentials. The former is already a dual track-and-trip winner and boasts the stronger profile at this stage. The Vintage Stakes winner Dr Rascal is another must for consideration.

The Comer Group International Irish St Leger
FACT FILE: A LOOK BACK AT LAST YEAR’S RACE
Al Riffa had proved well suited to stepping up to this trip when landing the Curragh Cup and took this just as easily. Dylan Browne McMonagle cruised into contention after giving the five-year-old a patient ride, putting a strong field to the sword by four lengths. Almiloc improved again in defeat after a positive ride from Rossa Ryan, holding fellow British raider Al Qareem by half a length, while the favourite Illinois failed to fire in seventh.
DISTANCE
One mile and six furlongs (2,800 metres)
PRIZE MONEY
€500,000 €285,000 - Winner
WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT RACE? Unlike its British counterpart, this race gives an opportunity for the classic generation to be pitted against their older rivals. Since 2014, there have been 3 three-year-olds to win the race, the latest being Search For A Song back in 2019.
DUAL WINNERS Since the Comer Group International Irish St. Leger became an open-age race in 1983, it has produced several repeat winners. The most successful of them all is Vinnie Roe, who claimed victory on four consecutive occasions from 2001 to 2004. Vintage Crop became the first dual winner of the race, securing back-to-back victories in 1993 and 1994. He has since been followed by other notable multiple winners, including Kayf Tara, Order of St George, Search For A Song and, most recently, Kyprios. 58
CLOSEST FINISH The closest finish in the race’s history occurred in 2011, when Duncan and Jukebox Jury could not be separated by the judge, resulting in a dead heat. The pair emerged clear at the top of the straight and engaged in what was arguably the most fiercely contested battle the race has ever seen. It appeared that Jukebox Jury had done just enough to prevail, but a late surge from Duncan ensured they crossed the line together.
LEADING
Vincent O’Brien and Dermot Weld share the distinction of being the most successful trainers in the history of this race, with nine victories apiece. Vincent O’Brien’s final win came in 1988 with Dark Lomond, capping a remarkable career. Dermot Weld, meanwhile, trained the race’s most successful horse, Vinnie Roe, as well as two other dual winners, Vintage Crop and Search For A Song. Aidan O’Brien is close behind with seven wins to his name, the latest coming when Kyprios secured his second victory in the race. As Aidan bids to join the elite force of the past, can Scandinavia, Jan Brueghel or Queenstown help aid his cause here?
TRAINERS?
ON THE CLOCK Over the past 20 renewals, the fastest winning time was recorded in 2014 by Brown Panther, who completed the race in 2:57.15. Trained by Tom Dascombe and ridden by Richard Kingscote, he posted the best time during this time period. In contrast, the slowest winning time came in 2009, when Alandi, ridden by Mick Kinane, crossed the finish line in 3:14.82, due to the softer ground.
LEADING RIDER? Morny Wing remains the benchmark for all jockeys aspiring to become the leading rider in the race’s history. His first victory was recorded over a century ago, yet no one has managed to surpass his remarkable tally of seven wins. Pat Smullen and Mick Kinane both came close, each securing four victories. Among the current generation, Ryan Moore leads the way with three wins to his name and today Ryan will look to add to his impressive tally aboard Scandinavia.

CURRAGH COMMENT The glaring omission on the resume of SCANDINAVIA is a win at the Curragh and the high-class son of Justify is strongly fancied to put that right here. Having only tasted defeat once in his last nine starts, this four-time Group 1 winner is very hard to oppose after adding the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and another Goodwood Cup to his portfolio. Jan Brueghel and Queenstown are high-calibre stable companions of last year’s St Leger winner and boast solid credentials. However, Trustyourinstinct is highly consistent and he could be a bigger danger.

RACE SEVEN
CURRAGH COMMENT This revolves around Oaks heroine THUNDERING ON, who failed to replicate that performance when fourth in the Pretty Polly over track and trip in June. The daughter of Frankel was reportedly coughing post-race, so if she reproduces anything like her scintillating victory at Epsom, she could prove a very tough nut to crack. Lilt failed to land a blow in the Prix de Diane last time, but this is just her fourth career start and there is likely to be more under the bonnet. Of the remainder, Jennifer Jane makes the most appeal.

CURRAGH COMMENT High Degree has been a model of consistency this season, finishing in the top three in five out of his six starts, and should go well once again in first-time blinkers. Irish Cambridgeshire runner-up Manton Bay is likely to be in the shake-up, but the one who appeals most is ALPHONSUS LIGUORI. Joseph O’Brien’s colt successfully made it two wins from three appearances over a mile at Cork in July and this step up in trip promises to unlock further improvement. An opening mark of 90 might not be beyond him and he looks the one to side with.
