Curragh Racecard - Saturday 29th March

Page 1

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the second meeting of the 2025 flat racing season at the Curragh. We are delighted to be back racing and are looking forward to a great season.

Last year we had 70 different winning trainers at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing.

This year we will race 24 times between March and November with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 29th. We have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed and Group 3 races and our better class handicaps. We are grateful for the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our race sponsors who are critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.

Today’s race sponsors are the Irish European Breeders Fund, Tote Ireland, the Irish National Stud, and Jamie Piggott Bloodstock who sponsors our feature race the Gladness Stakes in memory of Lester who rode so many winners at The Curragh. We are delighted to welcome Tracy Piggott and members of her family here today.

I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We have made some changes to our offering for owners this year with the Tattersalls Owners Club located on Level 2 of the racecourse. We hope you will relax and enjoy your day here and thank you for running your horse at the Curragh.

We are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please don’t hesitate to speak to a member of our race day staff who will assist you in any way they can.

Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Goffs Champagne Bar, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.

We race here again at the Curragh in two weeks’ time on Saturday April 12th when our feature races will be the Lodge Park Stud Irish EBF Park Express Stakes and the Tote Alleged Stakes.

We look forward to welcoming you back here that day and regularly during the 2025 flat season.

Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Adrian Murray has a couple in this and jockey bookings would suggest that MIAMI DESTINATION is the pick. The Ten Sovereigns filly cost 30,000 pounds as a yearling and is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Captain Marvelous. Oh Cecelia was a 48,000-euro purchase and her dam was a two-year-old winner at this venue She is another to note Gavin Cromwell has done well with his two-year-olds in recent years and Joyful Tidings also commands respect.

A very competitive contest and TWO STARS gets the vote Fozzy Stack generally has his horses well forward at the start of the year and this Starspangledbanner gelding may be able to pick up from where he left off last season. He won over course and distance in November before getting pipped late on at Doncaster just six days later Keke was a big improver last term, winning four handicaps, and is another who could progress again this season. Real Force won over C&D on his seasonal debut last year and is another to consider

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

MATHAN got going a bit too late when second on his return here 13 days ago and can go one better now The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt was finishing off strongly to get within a neck of Glen To Glen over six furlongs and it looks like a good move to step up to seven. Ryan Moore takes the mount on Ballydoyle newcomer Monkstown and the market may prove the best guide to his chances. 2023 Champion Bumper winner A Dream To Share kept on nicely when fourth over a mile here recently but the drop to 7f doesn’t look ideal.

LESTER PIGGOTT AT THE CURRAGH

The Curragh is delighted to welcome family members and friends of the legendary Lester Piggott to the races today.

The Gladness Stakes, sponsored by Jamie Piggott Bloodstock, will be run in honour of the 16-time Irish classic winning jockey.

Lester enjoyed phenomenal success at The Curragh between 1965 and 1981 winning the Irish Derby five times, the last of which came on perhaps the most famous horse of all, Shergar

Today’s feature race is named after Gladness, who Lester rode on many occasions, including to victory in the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and the Ebor at York.

Lester’s most famous partnsership came with Vincent O’Brien, with the pair enjoying many years of success at the Curragh. In 1990 when Piggott returned to the saddle, O’Brien was quick to support him and shortly after his return, he went onto ride four winners in one day at The Curragh.

The eleven-time champion jockey rode 31 major winners in Ireland, including three Irish 2000 Guineas and two Irish 1000 Guineas. He would retire with 4,493 winners, making him one of the greatest jockeys to ever ride.

You can visit the Lester Piggott statue located at the entrance to the Aga Khan Grandstand which was donated to the racecourse by the St. George Family.

CURRAGH COMMENT

CAMILLE PISSARRO was a smart juvenile last year and handled soft ground very well when landing the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere over this trip at Longchamp Poet Master has gained all five career wins over 7f and was particularly impressive when easily beating Lord Massusus in the Minstrel Stakes over C&D last summer Power Under Me relishes a soft surface and has been a great servant to connections over many years. He had Fleur De Chine and Mexicali Rose behind in second and third when successful at Tipperary last October.

CURRAGH COMMENT

J M’S JOY was placed a number of times including on soft ground for Pat Martin last year and should be suited by this extra 2f after staying on into second behind Athlumney Warrior over a mile at Dundalk last month. Red Scarlet also showed promise as a juvenile including when unlucky in running on her final start in a valuable event at Naas, while Dawn Spirit should step forward from her debut at Leopardstown last autumn. Restful and Adrienne boast placed form in maidens and both are now blinkered for the first time, while Mother Mara and Response Finale are others to consider in an open-looking maiden.

CURRAGH COMMENT

There is little to choose between Akecheta and INDIGO FIVE on running behind Rhythm King over C&D last backend with Titanium, No More Porter and Casanova all further adrift. The Johnny Feane-trained mare may now hold a slight fitness edge having made a pleasing reappearance when fourth to Oranadi here in the Lincoln with Fort Vega just a length behind in sixth. The application of a tongue tie proved key as Goldrush Kid opened his account over C&D on the opening day of the season and he is again on the shortlist, despite a 6lb rise in the ratings.

CURRAGH COMMENT

PARTY DRESS won a 1m1f Tipperary maiden on soft ground last year and also scored over hurdles when last seen at Thurles in November The selection appears fairly handicapped judged on her last Flat outing when finishing well into third behind Nans View (now 20lb worse off) here over 1m2f Duke Of Leggagh reverts to the level having won twice over hurdles at Naas this year, while Whimsy is also well suited by a soft surface and ended a frustrating sequence of places over hurdles in decisive fashion at Gowran earlier this month. Bear Profit, Solar Breeze and Calzaghi are others to consider.

WIN: PARTY DRESS

RACE SPONSOR

DANGER: Whimsy
