Curragh Racecard - Saturday 28th June

BACK

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes – one of the highlights of the racing season here at the Curragh. We hope that you have an enjoyable day with some wonderful racing.

Paddy Power have been a valued partner of Curragh for many years and operate our on-course betting shop in Champions Hall. This is the first time they have sponsored a Group 1 race with us, and we wish them every success – the last two winners of the Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes, Via Sistina and Blue Stocking, have gone on to great success globally including a Cox Plate and a Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – so the standard is high.

We are also grateful to David and Diane Nagle of Barronstown Stud, Sonia and Anthony Rogers of Airlie Stud, Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables located in Dubai, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes, Fitzpatrick Mercedes Benz and the Keadeen Hotel for their support of today’s programme. The support of our sponsors, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to offering competitive prize money levels here at the Curragh. We are also very grateful to the K Club for their support of our style competition.

Sadly, today we mourn one of the doyens of Irish flat racing, Kevin Prendergast, who passed away on June 20th. Having trained on the Curragh for over sixty years, it is hard to imagine the training grounds without Kevin. While we remember all of Kevin’s great winners here at the Curragh, we extend our deepest sympathies to Kevin’s family and his wide circle of friends and admirers. At the suggestion of Malih Al Basti and with the support of his family, today’s Al Basti Equiworld Dubai International Stakes is being run in Kevin’s honour.

Many thanks to all owners with runners here at the Curragh today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today as well as mobile food and beverage outlets

We race next here again tomorrow for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby which promises to be a great spectacle with gates opening at 11am

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Dorset is out of a half-sister to Classic winner Winter and shaped well when second to Amadeus Mozart on debut here. He’ll have learnt plenty from that and will be hard to beat

RW Ballydoyle have declared three runners and I’ll be siding with Dorset who Ryan Moore has picked.

2.20

JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE AND STABLES ANGLESEY STAKES

RD Flushing Meadows looked a smart prospect when beating experienced rivals on his racecourse bow and can take the step up in class in his stride.

RW Flushing Meadows dug deep to win on debut and he is the percentage call.

PADDY POWER PRETTY POLLY STAKES

Older fillies have held sway in recent years and Kalpana is preferred to Oaks runner-up Whirl after a good third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup on her return to action.

RW Kalpana was denied a clear run last time, should have improved and looks the pick to me.

4.40

FITZPATRICK’S MERCEDES-BENZ HANDICAP

RD Gordon Bennett has shaped well on his last couple of starts and looks well drawn here, so the C&D winner can have no excuses from an attractive handicap mark.

RW Saturn Seven can defy a 9lb rise in the weights after a snug course victory earlier this month

1.45

AIRLIE STUD STAKES

Lady Iman has taken the scalps of some useful rivals in three wins to date and stands out from a form perspective.

RW Lady Iman’s form with True Love at this venue will make her hard to beat.

AL BASTI EQUIWORLD, DUBAI INTERNATIONAL STAKES

Trustyourinstinct was a fine third to Los Angeles in the Mooresbridge Stakes over C&D before winning impressively over further here last time. He can concede weight all round.

RW Deepone over-raced when too keen in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. The drop in grade will suit now.

4.05 SHERRY FITZGERALD COUNTRY HOMES LADIES DERBY HANDICAP

RD

Nicola Burns is riding really well, and she can add to her recent flurry of wins aboard Leopardstown winner Bear Profit, who made up plenty of ground when scoring there.

RW Tatateo makes his stable debut on the Flat after an eye-catching run over hurdles at the Punchestown Festival.

5.15 KEADEEN HOTEL IRISH EBF MAIDEN

RD Naples was sent off a warm order for his debut at Limerick and, while he couldn’t justify support, is clearly considered better than he showed there, and is worth another chance

RW Sun Soldier didn’t get a clear run on debut at Navan in May. The extra furlong and application of cheekpieces should suit.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Aidan O’Brien saddles three, with Ryan Moore taking the mount on DORSET The Wootton Bassett colt was runner-up on his debut over C&D earlier in the month, getting within half a length of stablemate Amadeus Mozart, and should be hard to beat with that run under his belt. Wayne Lordan rides newcomer Benvenuto Cellini. The Frankel colt is a full-brother to Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Giselle Unbreakable Duke was third in a tight finish on his debut at Fairyhouse and has to be respected, but this will probably be a stronger maiden.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

LADY IMAN looks hard to oppose as she bids for a fourth straight success. Her form looks very strong, particularly her easy defeat of Queen Mary winner True Love here early last month. She was a good winner at Naas last time and can take another step up the ladder Beautify is the sole representative from Ballydoyle and could be the danger The Wootton Bassett filly looks likely to improve considerably from her debut run here last month, when placed behind Albany third Balantina. Leblon Queen was a massive price when winning at Roscommon, but that form has been boosted by the runner-up since She could bag some valuable black type.

CURRAGH COMMENT

TRUSTYOURINSTINCT looks the one to beat, despite giving weight to all of his rivals. The Churchill gelding comes here in fine form having won well over further on his last visit to the course. He ran a cracker over C&D previously when third to Los Angeles in Group 2 company and has won over 10f here in the past. Elizabeth Jane makes a belated return having missed a couple of engagements this year She was a Listed winner over this trip at Leopardstown last October and is nicely treated at the weights. Deepone weakened in Group 1 company on his return this season and may get closer now down in grade

Bluestocking continued her fine start to the season when taking this contest 12 months ago Eventual runner up Emily Upjohn looked to have one hand on the prize as she kicked clear into a commanding lead inside the final two furlongs. Ralph Beckett’s filly emerged as the only real threat and ran down the Gosden five-year-old with just over a hundred yards to go, no doubt aided by the softer underfoot conditions. It was a first Group 1 for the talented filly, who would go onto win two more before her racing career came to a close

CURRAGH COMMENT

KALPANA ran a cracker on her last visit here when third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and can strike again in a Group 1. She won at the highest level in testing conditions over almost a mile and a half at Ascot last October The Study Of Man filly showed last month, though, that she’s also capable of a top-class performance on better going over this trip Oaks runner-up Whirl gets a nice chunk of weight and has to be a big danger She was just edged out by stablemate Minnie Hauk at Epsom and is entitled to be a big player again. Magical Hope won well at Cork recently and could grab some valuable Group 1 black type WIN: KALPANA

CURRAGH COMMENT

Nicola Burns takes a useful 7lb off BEAR PROFIT and he may be able to follow up his win at Leopardstown earlier in the month. The Profitable gelding came with a strong run to lead inside the final furlong and going a bit further now should suit. Masoun also comes here in winning form, having scored at Leopardstown too, and is a previous C&D winner Jody Townend rides Tatateo and he is interesting back on the level after a good run to finish third in a Punchestown maiden hurdle just under three weeks ago

CURRAGH COMMENT

BACK DOWN UNDER may be able to bag another win here She scored over course and distance on her seasonal debut in March before chasing home easy winner Brigid’s Cloak last month. The latter was well beaten at York last time but had run well when runner-up here on her penultimate outing and is respected. Cold Hearted won her maiden over C&D earlier in the month and is another for the shortlist.

CURRAGH COMMENT

NAPLES is interesting here dropping in trip on his second start. The Mehmas gelding was sent off a short price on his debut at Limerick and travelled well to the two furlong marker He didn’t appear to see out a mile that day and it’s no surprise to see him trying this distance Sun Soldier made a promising debut when chasing home Seattle at Navan. He met some traffic problems in the run before finishing second and is entitled to improve. Stella Alpina sets the standard with a rating of 77.

Everybody at the Curragh was saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Prendergast on June 20th.

Kevin was a legend of the turf and a trainer here for over 60 years. It is hard to imagine the Curragh gallops without him.

On the track he enjoyed great success with 8 Irish Classic wins and numerous other Group 1 winners.

Great horses such as Pidget, Arctique Royale, Northern Treasure, Oscar Schindler, Awtaad, Conor Pass, Rebelline, La Collina and Miss Beatrix all graced the Curragh turf with distinction. His horses were always immaculately turned out.

Kevin was a cherished and widely respected member of the Irish racing community, and we extend our sympathies to his family and wide circle of friends and colleagues.

Together with our sponsor Malih Al Basti and with the support of the Prendergast family, we are pleased to be able to honour Kevin’s memory today with the running of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai International Stakes in honour of Kevin Prendergast. Pr
