Page 1

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes – one of the highlights of the racing season here at the Curragh. We hope that you have an enjoyable day with some wonderful racing.

Paddy Power have been a valued partner of Curragh for many years and operate our on-course betting shop in Champions Hall and we wish them every success – the most recent winners of the Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes, Whirl, Via Sistina and Bluestocking, have gone on to great success – so the standard is high.

We are also grateful to David and Diane Nagle of Barronstown Stud, Sonia and Anthony Rogers of Airlie Stud, Jebel Ali Racecourse in Dubai, The Reserve at Kilashee House Hotel, Fitzpatricks Garage, Neville Homes and Jo Browne Luxury Skincare for their support of today’s programme. Our sponsors, together with Horse Racing Ireland are critical to offering competitive prize money levels here at the Curragh.

Many thanks to all owners with runners here at the Curragh today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today including the K Club sponsored Most Stylish competition

We race next here again tomorrow for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby which promises to be a great spectacle. We look forward to welcoming you back here then and many more times during the season.

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

Around The PaddockA Simple Guide

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

GIANT SEQUOIA finished behind Bull Shark over C&D, but should benefit considerably from that experience and can turn the form around. By Frankel and out of Oaks runner-up Pink Dogwood, he was beaten at short odds on debut but finished his race off notably well. Bull Shark is capable, but had prior experience ahead of the aforementioned maiden and was well held in the Coventry Stakes last week. Ballydoyle second string Oklahoma has a top pedigree, while Venetian Power is out of a winning half-sister to a juvenile Listed winner

WIN: GIANT SEQUOIA

RACESPONSOR

DANGER: Bull Shark

David and Diane Nagle of Barronstown Stud will present a prize to be awarded to the winning owner and a €100 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

CURRAGH COMMENT

CONFUCIUS was the beaten favourite in last week’s Coventry Stakes, but nonetheless ran solidly and can make a quick winning reappearance Out of a Cheveley Park Stakes-winning dam, the son of No Nay Never had no excuses at Royal Ascot but was only beaten a length and three-quarters in that hot contest. Ballinea Star was quite green on her initial two starts before scoring at Cork and steps up in grade, while stablemate Immortal Guard finished third to the Coventry winner in the Marble Hill and can figure Mr Predicted is from the first crop of his American sire and was purchased for $300,000 in March.

CURRAGH COMMENT

MERIDEN has a fine Juddmonte pedigree so can continue to progress and has an obvious chance of completing a four-timer Out of a Group-placed dam who has already produced a stakes performer, Denis Hogan’s filly was purchased for 32,000gns as a two-year-old and while she has twice shown a tendency to hang left under pressure, she seemed well suited by this course when scoring earlier in the month. Rion Rubette is chasing a hat-trick but would prefer easier ground, while Greydreambeliever has twice finished runner-up to that rival in recent months, although she has prior form on fast ground. She’s Too Kool has shown nice ability in smart races and debuts in handicaps.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

THE ASSOCIATION OF IRISH RACECOURSE VETERINARY SURGEONS (AIRCVS)

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT

SUN GODDESS was a fine second in last week’s Albany Stakes and while she makes a quick reappearance, she is perfectly suited by conditions. Out of an unraced half-sister to a Group 3 winner, she looked smart when scoring over C&D and backed that up at Ascot, finishing second of 25 in a hot contest. Velozee has also smart form and although she disappointed at Naas in May, she ran satisfactorily in last week’s Queen Mary and goes back up in trip. Controlla was Group 3-placed on debut, but was well held in last week’s Windsor Castle Stakes.

FEATURE THE PADDY POWER

OVERVIEW

The Pretty Polly Stakes is one of Ireland’s premier races for fillies and mares. To be run over one mile and two furlongs, it is open to three-year-olds and upwards.

Named in honour of the outstanding Irish-bred filly Pretty Polly, who was foaled in 1901 and became one of the most celebrated racehorses of her generation, the race has evolved significantly since its inception. Originally restricted to three-year-old fillies, it was later opened to older mares and spent a period as a Group Two contest before being elevated to Group One status in 2004.

The race has been won by some of the finest fillies and mares of the modern era, including multiple Group One winners Alexander Goldrun, Minding and Magical. More recent victors such as Bluestocking and multiple Australian Group One winner Via Sistina have also used success in the Pretty Polly Stakes to cement their place among the world’s leading middle-distance performers.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

After narrowly being denied in the Epsom Oaks by stablemate Minnie Hauk, Whirl wasted no time in bouncing back to land the Group One Paddy Power Pretty Polly after a sustained battle with Kalpana.

Ryan Moore set out in front after breaking well, setting steady early fractions, with the remainder of the field spaced evenly in behind.

Turning for home, Ryan was the first to get serious aboard the long-time leader, as Colin Keane travelled effortlessly alongside her aboard Kalpana. It looked as though Andrew Balding would be picking up another Group One winner but Whirl and Ryan Moore battled back bravely to eventually repel the challenge and win by a length and a quarter

THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW

8 of the last 12 winners were aged 4 or older

7/12 winners were in the top 3 in the betting

9/12 winners had at least 1 win in a group 1-3 race

Thundering On arrives here after an emphatic victory in the Epsom Oaks. She came home an eventual three-and-a-quarter-length victor after travelling powerfully into the race before clearing away under Dylan Browne McMonagle Joseph O’Brien’s daughter of Frankel will be hoping to follow in the hoofsteps of her Dam Thundering Nights but is up against it if the stats are to be believed, with only three of the last ten winners being three-year-olds. Of the older horses, Estrange stands out as a leading contender David O’Meara’s mare made a pleasing return at Carlisle when scoring on ground that was on the faster side of what she would have preferred. She looks set to get softer conditions on Saturday, which would boost her chances. British raiders have a good recent record, with two of the last three winners coming from across the Irish Sea. Red Letter was only narrowly beaten by See The Fire at York last time out. Her record at the Curragh is a good one, and another step forward cannot be ruled out for Ger Lyons.

CURRAGH COMMENT

THUNDERING ON has improved massively since stepping up in trip from a mile as she broke her maiden tag in the Salsabil at Navan before taking another giant step forward when a very impressive winner of the Oaks. The manner in which she quickened up at Epsom suggests the return to 1m2f will pose no problems for Joseph O’Brien’s filly, who appears to have the world at her feet. Estrange boasts some excellent form against the likes of Minnie Hauk and Kalpana. She will appreciate any rain in the forecast and commands the utmost respect. Red Letter and One Look complete the shortlist.

FIXATION wasn’t disgraced over C&D in May and gets the vote in this open-looking handicap on suitably fast ground. The handicapper dropped him 1lb for that effort and the addition of cheekpieces are likely to aid his cause Diamond Exchange should appreciate a return to a sounder surface, having disappointed on soft ground at Leopardstown recently, while able handicapper Clear Quartz is respected after finishing second on his return at Leopardstown.

CURRAGH COMMENT

THE PIPER’S CALL was runner-up at big odds on his debut last June and that race has thrown up many smart winners, with Puerto Rico (fourth) later scoring twice at Group 1 level. The selection underperformed at Naas in July but did well to win over C&D recently following a 333-day layoff and is expected to have more to come. Fox In Flight was beaten by a subsequent winner at Cork recently and reverts back up in trip, while another three-year-old Unauthorized is 7lb higher than when scoring at Listowel.

CURRAGH COMMENT

STARBORN LEGEND didn’t get a clear passage when finishing sixth over C&D recently and can turn placings around with Tide Of Fortune and Trek Home Out of an unraced half-sister to two Group 1 winners and by a leading stallion, the selection was purchased for 330,000 euro at a Breeze-Up sale last June and is entitled to improve from his initial debut effort. Tide Of Fortune himself met some trouble in-running when finishing a useful runner-up on that occasion, but is potentially vulnerable to the selection.

DANGER: Tide Of Fortune

Jo Browne will present prize to be awarded to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and €100 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out.

BETTING EXPLAINED

The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.

Another common bet is each-way This is effectively two bets in one. One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:

All races of less than 5 runners – win only

All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2

All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3

Handicaps of 12-15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3

Handicaps of more than 15 runners –1/4 , 1,2,3,4
