I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our first Classic of the 2025 flat racing season – the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.
Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track today. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.
I would also like to thank our race sponsors Avenue Bloodstock, Irish Stallion Farms, Weatherbys Ireland, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort, QuinnBet, Revamp Restoration and Conservation, Finlay Volvo and of course our feature race sponsor Tattersalls who are great supporters of Irish racing.
Earlier this week we were delighted to announce a three-year extension of our partnership with Tattersalls which covers the three Group 1 races over Guineas weekend and the Owners and Trainers Lounge here at the Curragh. We are grateful to Edmond Mahony and his team for their consistent support.
Last year we had 70 different winning trainers here at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing. Once again, we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh this year and are delighted at the number of English trained runners throughout the weekend – you are very welcome, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh.
Our nine-race card features as a Tote World Pool Day for the first time, and we are grateful to our friends in the Hong Kong Jockey Club for this partnership. The larger pools should increase the odds of many horses, so good luck with your choices.
Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.
We race again here tomorrow where the twin features are the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT
A contest where the market should be informative Aidan O’Brien has taken the last two renewals and fields a pair of Wootton Bassett colts in BRUSSELS and Kansas. The former made 300,000gns at the sales and is the mount of Ryan Moore so a big run looks more than likely Kansas has had the benefit of an outing in Naas, where he finished third, and improvement should be forthcoming. He holds an entry in an early-closing sales race at Doncaster O’Brien is operating at a strike-rate of just under 40 per cent in juvenile races this season. Newcomer Ennoble is one of two representatives from Joseph O’Brien’s stable and is a half-brother to a Listed winner

TRUSTYOURINSTINCT sets the standard with a rating of 109 He’s a very consistent horse who landed a Group 3 over this trip at Leopardstown in September He wasn’t far behind the market leaders in third in a Group 2 over 1m2f here earlier this month, which was a creditable performance Paddy Twomey’s stable is in red-hot form and Magical Hope is a very interesting contender on her first start for him. She won at Listed level in Germany and the fact she holds a Group 1 entry at this track next month looks highly significant. Siege Of Troy was very strong in the market on her seasonal reappearance at Gowran Park before finishing fourth. She is not one to underestimate WIN: TRUSTYOURINSTINCT DANGER: Magical Hope

CURRAGH COMMENT
Joseph O’Brien’s AERONAUTIC catches the eye on his handicap debut. This Gleneagles gelding is a lightly-raced sort who has won two of his four races. On his latest outing, he was beaten two lengths into fourth in Listed company at Leopardstown last summer He can have a say off a mark of 96. Himalayan Heights is race-fit from a decisive victory in a Leopardstown handicap in April. Afterwards, connections commented that he has matured since last season so there should be more to come from him. Longbourn has gone well fresh before and is well versed in big-field handicaps. Cloud Seeker is climbing the weights but has a more-than-decent win ratio, which will stand him in good stead.

Greenlands preview from Weatherbys
All eyes will be on Aidan O’Brien’s excitingAustralianrecruitStormBoy in Saturday’s Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh, butconnectionsofformerhigh-class two-year-old Iberian will be among those hoping to spoil the party in whatlooksacompetitiverenewalof theGroup2.
Storm Boy was among the best of his generation in Australia as a twoyear-old and follows the same route as O’Brien’s 2018 Greenlands winner Merchant Navy, another former Australian sprint star who was also making his European debut when winningtherace.
Merchant Navy went on to win Royal Ascot’s Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes before retiring to stud, and Storm Boy is already vying for favouritism in the same race, as well as the King Charles III Stakes. He arrived from Australia with five wins under his belt, plus third place in the TABGoldenSlipperStakes, whenRyan Mooregotatasteofhiminwhatiswell establishednowastheworld’srichest two-year-old race, and there is no doubtinghistalent.
Storm Boy hasn’t been on the racecourse since October, when he finishedonlyeighthintheTABEverest Stakes at Randwick, but O’Brien has been making very positive noises about how he has settled in, and the
InaRacingPoststabletourlastmonth O’Brien, who also took top sprint honourswithyetanotherex-Australian sprinter in Starspangledbanner, said: “He’s fast. Before he came down, we didn’t know whether he’d want six furlongs, seven furlongs or a mile but he’s very quick and is definitely a sprinter - that was very apparent the minutehesteppedupagear.”
Ominously, he added that “You’d be very happy with everything he’s doing,” but while Storm Boy undoubtedlymeritseveryrespect, this isaraceinwhichBritishsprintershave donewellinrecentyears.CharlieHills, forone, isveryhopefulthatIberianwill take another important step along the redemption trail by following up thestable’s2024Greenlandswinwith Mitbaahy.
Iberian, one of four British sprinters in a field of nine, beat next-time-out Group1winnersSunwayandRosallion in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster at two, after which only City Of Troy was preferred to him in the Dewhurst betting. However, he disappointed there, and again in the 2000 Guineas, and it was only at Southwell last December that he begantogetbackontrack.
He followed a narrow win there with
a neck second to Spycatcher in Doncaster’sCammidgeTrophy, where he burst through looking much the besthorseintheraceuntilveeringleft andinterferingwithtworivals, andhis trainer now has little doubt that he is readyforthisstepbackupinclass.

He added: “We could have gone to York last week, but that’s a quick six furlongs and I think the stiff six at the Curraghwillsuithimwell.Wemadean entry at Salisbury on Saturday too to giveourselvesoptions, astheforecast wasunsettledatthestartoftheweek, but the Greenlands has always been the preferred option and that’s where he’llgo.

He’s got a lot of natural talent and has always looked like a verygoodhorse.”
The Abernant Stakes second and third, GrandGrey and LethalLevi, are among three other possibles from Britain, along with James’s Delight, who was one of those hampered by IberianatDoncaster.GrandGrey, who will carry the old Via Sistina colours, finished well at Newmarket and looks particularly interesting, as that was his first run for Kevin Ryan after his €340,000purchasefromFrance.
Joining Storm Boy among the domestic defence is the Ger Lyonstrained My Mate Alfie, a three-time courseanddistancewinner, including in the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes. He beat Big Gossey, who is set to reoppose, that day, and having been only narrowly beaten at Naas on his reappearance he looks sure to give a goodaccountofhimself.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Aidan O’Brien takes the wraps off Australian import STORM BOY, who could be an exciting addition to the sprinting ranks. He won at this level at Randwick as a juvenile and is a son of Justify with plenty of dash. He holds Group 1 entries for Royal Ascot. Grand Grey ran on strongly for second (ahead of Lethal Levi in third) in a Group 3 at Newmarket, which was a notable effort on his first start since switching to Kevin Ryan. My Mate Alfie really enjoys the Curragh and is likely to come on from his runner-up berth on his reappearance in Naas. Charlie Hills won this last year and sends Iberian across the Irish Sea, so his chance is respected.

Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas The Jockeys
By Donn McClean
Gavin Ryan (1. Commanche Brave)
Gavin Ryan had ridden over 20 winners before he sat his Leaving Cert in 2019
The following year, he was crowned champion apprentice when he rode 51 winners, which saw him finish sixth in the overall jockeys’ championship
He has quickly established himself in the top echelons of Irish jockeys. His relationship with trainer Donnacha O’Brien has been key in that regard, and he landed his first Group 1 race when he rode Proud And Regal to victory for the trainer in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in October 2022. He rode Commanche Brave to win his maiden at Cork last September, and he rode him to finish second in the Group 3 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on his debut this season, just a half a length behind Henri Matisse, who won the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (the French 2000 Guineas) two weeks ago, and he is fully deserving of his place in the line-up for the first Classic of the 2025 Irish racing season.
Oisín Murphy (2. Cosmic Year)
A native of Killarney in County Kerry, Oisín Murphy spent much of his formative time as a fledgling rider with his uncle Jim Culloty, who famously rode Best Mate to 12 of his 14 wins, including his three victories in the Cheltenham Gold Cup
It was always flat racing for Oisín Murphy though and, after bursting onto the scene in 2013 when with Andrew Balding in Britain, he embarked on a fast-track to the top of the sport. Champion apprentice in Britain in 2014, he claimed the champion jockey’s title in Britain for the first time in 2019, a title he retained in 2020 and in 2021, and one which he regained last year
He has added many of the top races around the world to his CV: the Prix de la Foret, the Japan Cup, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, the Hong Kong Vase, the Dubai Turf, as well as the 1000 Guineas and the 2000 Guineas in Britain, and the Nassau Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup and the Eclipse He landed his biggest win to date in Ireland in September 2018, when he drove Roaring Lion to victory in the Irish Champion Stakes, and he will obviously be hoping to add to his Irish Group 1 haul today on Cosmic Year
Wayne Lordan (3. Expanded)
From Upton in County Cork, Wayne Lordan rode his first Group 1 winner in August 2010, when he sprang a 100/1 shock on the then unheralded Sole Power in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
It is somewhat incongruous that he beat the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Starspangledbanner into second place that day because, these days, trainer and rider are usually on the same team, enjoying many successes together at the highest level. They have teamed up to win the 1000 Guineas with Winter and Hermosa, the Matron Stakes with Hydrangea, the Tattersalls Gold Cup with Magical and the Moyglare Stud Stakes with Lake Victoria. Wayne Lordan rode Expanded to win his maiden on his racecourse debut at The Curragh last October, and he is back on board the Wootton Bassett colt today in a race for the first time since
Colin Keane (4. Field Of Gold)
Colin Keane is Ireland’s champion jockey. He has been Ireland’s champion jockey every year for the last five years. It’s a continuum.
In 2021, he rode 141 winners in Ireland, more winners than any jockey had ever ridden in one Irish Flat racing season, beating the previous best by 15. It is likely that tally will stand for a long time, unless Keane himself beats it sometime soon.
He travels too Recognition goes well beyond Ireland’s borders these days. He has won Group 1 races in Britain, France, Italy and America too and, when John and Thady Gosden were looking for a rider for their Irish 2000 Guineas favourite Field Of Gold, Colin Keane was the automatic choice He has won the race before, on Siskin in 2020, for his boss Ger Lyons and for Field Of Gold’s owners Juddmonte, and he is odds-on to win it again today
Shane Foley (5. Hotazhell)
Shane Foley rode the first Group 1 winner of his career on this weekend nine years ago, when he drove the Adrian Keatley-trained filly Jet Setting home in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, getting to the winning line a head in front of warm favourite Minding. And he rode his second on this weekend seven years ago, when he teamed up with trainer Ken Condon and won the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas on the 25/1 shot Romanised.
His latest Group 1 win was at Doncaster in October, when he teamed up with Jessica Harrington, as is his wont these days, and got Hotazhell home by a nose in the Futurity Trophy. He has been teaming up with Jessica Harrington for a while now, quite successfully too, as evidenced by the exploits of Millisle and Albigna and Lucky Vega and No Speak Alexander and Discoveries and Magical Lagoon at the top level. Hotazhell hasn’t run since October, but you know that he won’t lack for fitness, and you know that he won’t lack for assistance from the saddle.
Ryan Moore (6. Officer)
Ryan Moore won 19 Group or Grade 1 races last year He won 19 Group or Grade 1 races too in 2023, at least one Group 1 win every month from March to November inclusive, and dotted, as they were, around the globe: Ireland, Britain, France, Dubai, Australia, America. On four different continents. He is the go-to international rider, the jockey to whom the planet looks, and he is Aidan O’Brien’s number one
Name a famous horse race in the world, anywhere in the world, and Ryan Moore has probably won it. The Epsom Derby? Of course, four times. The Oaks? Four times too The Ascot Gold Cup? Also four times. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France? Twice The Prix du Cadran? Also twice The Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in Germany? Linngari, 2008. The Gran Criterium in Italy? Scintillo, 2007
Go further afield. The Breeders’ Cup Turf in America? Yes, five times. The Canadian International? Twice The Hong Kong Vase? Three times. The Japan Cup? Twice The Tenno Sho? The Asahi Hai Futurity? Yes and yes. The Dubia Sheema Classic? Check. The Dubai Turf? Check again. The Cox Plate in Australia? The Golden Slipper? The Mackinnon Stakes? Yes, yes and yes. The Melbourne Cup? The race that stops a nation (Australia)? Protectionist, 2014. The Irish 2000 Guineas? Three times. Gleneagles, Churchill and Paddington. He could make it four times today on Officer
Sean Levey (7. Rashabar)
Watching last year’s Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas live, there was a point in the race when you thought that favourite Rosallion had a lot of ground to make up on the leader, his stable companion Haatem. That he might not get there Rosallion’s rider Sean Levey never thought that though. He bided his time before asking his horse for his effort and he delivered him, momentum up, to get up and win by a head.
Apprenticed to Aidan O’Brien for six years, during which time he won listed and Group 3 races for the champion trainer on Hindu Kush and Psalm and Poet, Sean Levey bagged his first Group 1 win in 2018, when he landed the 1000 Guineas on 66/1 shot Billesdon Brook for trainer Richard Hannon, and he landed his second when he won the Sun Chariot Stakes the following year on the same filly He won the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot last year on Jayarebe for Brian Meehan, and he teams up with Brian Meehan again today with Rashabar, on whom he finished second last year in the Prix Morny and in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere
Dylan Browne McMonagle (8. Scorthy Champ)
Dylan Browne McMonagle’s reputation reached racing before he did. 218 wins on the pony racing circuit will do that. And the Dingle Derby, and just about every race at Dingle
He hit the ground running too when he took out his apprentice’s licence. He rode his first Group race winner in April 2021, Baron Samedi in the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan, a 20/1 shot on the day and still an apprentice Trainer Joseph O’Brien was happy to put him up in a Group race, even though an apprentice can’t utilise his claim in a Group race And it snowballed. Champion apprentice for the first time in 2021, champion apprentice for the second time in 2022, first Group 1 win in September 2022, Al Riffa in the National Stakes. Last September, he landed his second National Stakes when he rode Scorthy Champ to victory in the race, delivered with his run on the far side to get up and win by three parts of a length. Scorthy Champ is back for more today
Chris Hayes (9. Windlord)
It is ironic that Chris Hayes rode his first winner on a horse named Anonymity
Almost all of the rider’s early big-race wins were for Kevin Prendergast. It is nine years ago this weekend that he rode Awtaad for his boss in the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, and the pair of them came home two and a half lengths clear of the Newmarket Guineas winner Galileo Gold.
Many more Group 1 wins have followed since, Search For A Song and Romantic Proposal and Homeless Songs. In 2022, Chris Hayes rode Tahiyra for Dermot Weld to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes, and in 2023 he rode the Siyouni filly to win the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes and the Matron Stakes. Last year, he won the Epsom Oaks on Ezeliya, also for Dermot Weld, and he will be hoping to add to his Group 1 haul today on Windlord for Andrew Balding.
ROSALLION confirmed himself a high-class miler, building upon his fine 2,000 Guineas runner-up effort at Newmarket on seasonal debut. He showed a very willing attitude and devoured the ground to dig deep to give Richard Hannon a 1-2 as he won by a head River Tiber came home strongest of the Aidan O’Brien trio but was no match for the winner in a competitive renewal of the Tattersalls 2,000 Guineas.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Asian Daze gained a third career win when making an impressive reappearance over 7f here earlier this month, beating SLUICE by three and a half lengths. However, the Joseph O’Brien-trained filly could be suited by the combination of moving up to a mile and this sounder surface, so may reverse the form on 10lb better terms. Flight Of Fancy takes a drop in class after her fourth in a Naas Group 3 and the step back in trip could suit, while Zaynab showed a smart turn of foot to snatch a 7f maiden here last month. Evening Blossom and September Leaves are two to consider on their handicap debut with useful claimers booked.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Irish Lincoln winner ORANDI has every chance of landing another big prize for trainer Tony Martin. Narrowly denied when bidding to follow up in the English equivalent at Doncaster, the seven-year-old was subsequently raised 4lb With Jack Kearney taking 3lb off his back, the gelding looks favourably treated and given his liking for these big-field cavalry charges, he has to be the first port of call. A real eyecatcher on his recent stable debut at Limerick, Lord Church has to be of interest on his second start for Emmet Mullins. Stablemate Derry Lad is another who should appreciate a strongly-run mile

Having been successful off a similar break in the past, GENUINE ARTICLE can make a winning reappearance
Lightly raced for previous connections, the five-year-old has shaped with promise on more than one occasion since joining Gerry Keane Third over C&D on his final start last season, the gelding remains open to further improvement. Merisi Diamond, who looked to be coming to hand when fourth at Limerick last month, shouldn’t be far away Although versatile when it comes to trip, this appears to be his optimum distance Pinar Del Rio is entitled to be sharper for his recent narrow defeat at Naas.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Cork maiden winner JAGGED EDGE looks open to improvement from an initial mark of 90 Well on top in the closing stages, the form received a boost when the runner-up won easily next time out. Given how strongly he travelled when opening his account, dropping back a furlong in trip should see the son of Blue Point in an even better light. Madrid Handicap winner East Hampton has to be respected, despite his big weight. That Naas race has thrown up plenty of subsequent Graded performers over the years. British raider Shameful has to enter calculations with Colin Keane booked.

CURRAGH COMMENT
The Dermot Weld-trained ESHERANN has every chance of improving on his debut second at Leopardstown. Always prominent, the Wootton Bassett colt kept on nicely to take minor honours close home Stepping up an additional three furlongs looks very much in his favour, while the experience of racing over shorter on his introduction will not have been lost on him. Rizal, who was very strong in the market when fifth at Gowran Park, is another who should have benefited from his initial outing and it would be no surprise to see Johnny Murtagh’s colt leave that form well behind. Propose is also worthy of consideration.
