I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our first Classic of the 2026 flat racing season – the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.
Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track today. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.
I would also like to thank our race sponsors Tally Ho Stud, Irish Stallion Farms, Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes, Keadeen Hotel, Weatherbys Ireland, Scott Heider and his family, NorthStandard, O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey and of course our feature race sponsor Tattersalls who are great supporters of Irish racing.
We were delighted last year to announce a three-year extension of our partnership with Tattersalls which covers the three Group 1 races over Guineas weekend and the Owners and Trainers Lounge here at the Curragh. We are grateful to all of the Tattersalls team for their consistent support of the Curragh.
Once again, we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh this year and are delighted at the number of English trained runners throughout the weekend – you are very welcome, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh.
Our nine-race card features as a Tote World Pool Day for the second time, and we are grateful to our friends in the Hong Kong Jockey Club for this partnership. The larger pools should increase the odds of many horses, so good luck with your choices.
As well as the racing, there is plenty of entertainment off track including ‘Conversations with Robbie Irwin” on our Champions Hall stage, The Ramblin’ Rovers keeping the excitement going in Lilywhites Lounge and building to our Saturday night Afterparty with O’Driscoll’s Irish Whiskey and The Highstool Prophets.
Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.
We race again here tomorrow where the twin features are the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign
Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race
Around The PaddockA Simple Guide
A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight
Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)
A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip
A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears
A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Aidan O’Brien has saddled the last three winners of this race, all partnered by Ryan Moore, and the jockey is on SERGEI DIAGHILEV, who could be the most forward of O’Brien’s three newcomers. This Wootton Bassett colt is a brother to a Tipperary maiden winner who has been placed in Group 3 contests. Wayne Lordan takes the ride on Bold Commander, whose brother proved good enough to win the Birdcatcher at Naas last season so he ought to be speedy Joseph O’Brien’s Folsom Blues is a nicely-related sort who could show plenty of dash, while South Dakota may be third choice on Ballydoyle’s jockey bookings but has plenty of winners in his pedigree

Orby was one of the most important racehorses in Irish racing history, remembered for becoming the first Irish-trained winner of the Epsom Derby and for establishing Ireland as a major force in international flat racing.
Foaled in 1904, Orby was bred and owned by Richard ‘Boss’ Croker, the colourful former Tammany Hall political boss from New York who had returned to Ireland and established his racing operation at Glencairn Stud in County Dublin.
Trained by Fred McCabe and ridden by American jockey Johnny Reiff, Orby showed promise as a young horse despite early issues with fragile feet and immaturity. At three years old, he developed into a top-class colt, winning important preparatory races before travelling to Epsom for the Derby in 1907 On a difficult, rain-softened track, Orby produced a superb performance to defeat a strong field and secure a historic victory for Ireland and for Boss Croker, whose triumph captured widespread public attention.
Orby later became the first horse to complete the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby double, further cementing his reputation as one of the finest horses of his era. Although injury and health problems cut short his racing career, he retired with a distinguished record and later enjoyed success as a breeding stallion, siring future Classic winners including Grand Parade.
Today, Orby remains a legendary figure in Irish racing he is buried in the grounds of Glencairn House, now the official residence of the British Ambassador to Ireland
H.E Kara Owen, the British Ambassador to Ireland is joined by Roseanne De Vere Hunt and Marcus Magnier of Sherry FitzGerald Country Homes together with Evan Arkwright of The Curragh pictured at Orby’s grave

NYRA, who was third in the German Oaks last year, is a fascinating recruit for Joseph O’Brien’s yard. The fact that she holds a Group 1 entry at this track next month looks significant. Purview is of interest on the first run of his four-year-old campaign. He signed off last season with a Listed success over an extended 10 furlongs at Cork and steps up to a mile and a half for the first time The admirable eight-year-old gelding Chally Chute sets the standard with a mark of 112, although he would prefer more cut in the ground on his seasonal reappearance Trustyourinstinct won this race last year and will be sharper for his unplaced run in a Group 3 last month.

CURRAGH COMMENT
CLOUD SEEKER knows how to perform in these big-field handicaps and has a shot at going one better than last year when he just failed by a short head. This is his trip and ground. There are any number of dangers, though. Deressa has switched to Paddy Twomey after a couple of victories for Dermot Weld and could do damage with Colin Keane booked. Fiver Friday is in a rich vein of form and was a ready winner of a good pot over C&D last month when she travelled notably well. There is certainly more to come from Yulia, who suffered a less-than-clear route on her way to fifth on her Irish debut in Sligo

Race preview from Weatherbys
11 go to post for this afternoon’s Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, a Group 2 contest over 6f, in which there are five British-trained runners.
That quintet includes last year’s winner James’s Delight, who bids to go back-to-backforCliveCoxandowners
Paul & Clare Rooney. The Invincible Army five-year-old finished strongly in 2025 and should strip fitter for his recentreturninDoncaster’sCammidge Trophy.
Third last year, the evergreen Big Gossey was only beaten a short-head andaneck, andwasinwinningcourse form at this track in late March, when capturing the Gladness Stakes over an extra furlong. Ground conditions are unlikelytobeassofttoday.
The four-year-old Powerful Glory has to concede weight to all, given that he caused a huge (200/1) shock in the Group1BritishChampionsSprintStakes when last seen. Winner of the Group 2 MillReefStakesasajuvenile, heremains very lightly-raced and open to further improvement.
Karl Burke’s Spycatcher and William Haggas’ Montassib clashed with James’s Delight in the Cammidge Trophy, with the latter coming out on top (fourth). He was 6½ lengths off Powerful Glory at Ascot last autumn, then finished the best part of 5 lengths
The British challenge is completed by Marvelman, a four-year-old Invincible Spirit colt trained by Andrew Balding. He drops back to this trip for the first time since his juvenile days and wears afirsttimehood.
Winner of the 2023 Phoenix Stakes, BucaneroFuerte hashadtworunsthis season and will appreciate stepping back up in trip following his latest start in the Woodlands Stakes at Naas. The same connections have Valiant Force to rely upon, too, but the former would appear to be the first string, with David Eganinthesaddle.
Donnacha O’Brien’s Comanche Brave is another who was racing over further last term, with his third in Royal Ascot’s Jersey Stakes following on from his fifth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. It will be interestingtoseeifRyanMooreadopts positive tactics over this trip and he is another four-year-old with scope to showfurtherimprovement.
Interestingly,ChicagoCritic, whowears first time blinkers, finished third in the 2024 Jersey and also comes back in distance, having raced over 7f-1m1f whilst in the UAE, and the filly Fregada completes the line-up. She remains very lightly-raced but hasn’t won since makingasuccessfuldebutovercourseand-distanceasatwo-year-old.

CURRAGH COMMENT
COMANCHE BRAVE was far from outclassed in fifth behind superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising in Sha Tin last month and there may be more to come from him in the sprinting division. Last season, he was campaigned over longer trips and was placed several times in Group races. British raider Powerful Glory is entitled to maximum respect after winning the Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot last October Bucanero Fuerte hasn’t quite been at his best in two outings this season, but he has plenty of winning form over C&D and ought to be in the thick of the action. Big Gossey loves it here and continues to defy expectations, while Montassib is another to consider WIN: COMANCE BRAVE DANGER: Powerful Glory

BETTING EXPLAINED
The first thing to consider is which type of bet you wish to place The most common is a win bet, where if your selection wins, you win. It is a no nonsense, on the nose bet and if you are lucky enough to pick a big-priced winner, you will receive a nice return. For example, place €5 to win on a 10-1 shot and you will receive €55 back, €50 winnings plus your €5 stake.
Another common bet is each-way
This is effectively two bets in one One bet is on your selection to win and the other is on it to place. Depending on the type of race and how many runners are in the race will determine how many places are offered. The industry standard bookmaker place terms are as follows:
All races of less than 5 runners – win only
All races of 5-7 runners –1/4 odds a place, 1,2
All other races of more than 8 runners –1/5, 1,2,3
The Irish 2000 Guineas is one of the most prestigious races in the Irish flat racing calendar and is in fact the first of the five Irish Classics staged here at the Curragh. Run over one mile, the race is open to three-year-olds and serves as Ireland’s equivalent of the 2000 Guineas race at Newmarket. First established in 1921 the contest attracts leading horses from across Europe
The Irish 2000 Guineas is renowned for showcasing emerging champions with strong prospects for the remainder of the racing season and many of the excellent cast of runners you see today will go on to achieve big things this year. 2024 winner Rosallion for example went on to take the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot the following month, a feat that was matched by 2025 winner Field Of Gold.
LAST YEAR’S WINNER
The 2025 renewal saw the well-backed Field Of Gold sweep home in impressive style to take the win for John & Thady Gosden. Racing in the Juddmonte colours, the three-year-old was held up in the rear early on before beginning to make good headway from just over two furlongs out. Colin Keane began to edge his mount forwards, and he took the lead just before entering the final furlong. From then on there was no catching him as he stormed towards the finish.
Finishing in second was fellow Juddmonte runner Cosmic Year Trained by Harry Charlton he also finished strongly but ultimately proved no match for the winner Rounding out the podium positions was the classy Hotazhell.
THIS YEAR’S PREVIEW
Seven of the last 12 winners were favourites
Seven of the last 12 winners came from stall three or lower
Six of the last 12 winners ran in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket
A strong field of 10 goes to post for this race and Aidan O’Brien holds a powerful hand with the well-backed market leader Gstaad. The three-year-old Starspangledbanner colt is a clear favourite at the time of writing and it’s not hard to see why After a trio of Group 1 seconds last season, he signed the year off in style with an excellent win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in November His sole start so far this season saw him produce a strong second in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month and he looks well placed to score here Finishing one place behind the favourite then was Charlie Appleby’s Distant Storm. The Night Of Thunder colt was a fine winner of the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket last year and has placed in a pair of Group 1’s since Karl Burke’s Alparslan is also a contender after he got this season off to a flyer with his success in the Greenham at Newbury last month.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Aidan O’Brien’s GSTAAD looks very much the one to beat. Last season’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner reappeared in the 2000 Guineas and moved clear with the winner before giving best in the closing stages. Distant Storm, who has been chalked up as second favourite behind Gstaad for this assignment, was some eight lengths back in third at Newmarket so it is hard to see that form being overturned, despite the first-time cheekpieces and his solid overall form. Thesecretadversary was behind them in fifth on the Rowley Mile, when keen, but could improve upon that if settling better on home turf Karl Burke’s Alparslan made all in the Greenham at Newbury and is hunting a cheque

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.
This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

ABBREVIATIONSEXPLAINED
You will occasionally see letters after a horses form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here at Curragh may suggest that it will run well again today
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here at Curragh but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here at Curragh and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite Advises that a horse was well fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today

GO ATHLETICO held a career-high rating of 108 and dropped down to a mark of 86 when landing the valuable Scurry Handicap over a similar distance here last summer The Ado McGuinness-trained gelding gave plenty of encouragement that another competitive handicap is within his grasp when third to Keke at Naas last month. He gets the vote to improve past runner-up Indigo Dream, who has held her form well since taking a Dundalk maiden in December Sir Les Patterson has gained all five career wins on the all-weather but appears fairly treated, while Dmaniac would appreciate any further rain. Aviatrice and Barbapapa are others to note

COUNT BEZUKHOV caught the eye on debut when keeping on into third behind odds-on stablemate Cannes at Leopardstown earlier this month. The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt had Amethyst Stone and Glen Echo both well behind and should benefit from that initial experience The Shandyman was only caught close home when runner-up to the selection’s stablemate Acclamatic over a mile here last autumn and may prove the chief threat, while Theorist and Lonely Island have also shown some promise Sakoku and Saxony Charms are two newcomers to note in the market.
WIN: COUNT BEZUKHOV
