I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you today for the fourth meeting of the 2025 racing season at the Curragh – our Newbridge Community Race Day. We are delighted to be back racing at the Curragh as the ﬂat season in Ireland gains momentum. Congratulations to our colleagues in Punchestown on a wonderful festival of National Hunt racing last week.

Last year we had 70 different winning trainers at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing. Once again, this year we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh.

In 2025 we will race 24 times in total with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby scheduled for Sunday June 29th. We have increased our prize money again this year with the focus on our Listed, Group 3 races and better class handicaps. We are grateful for the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our race sponsors who are critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.

Please try out our café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall, including our Big Screen. To watch the racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the ﬁnal furlong at the front of the stand. We are always interested in hearing customer feedback.

We are delighted to work closely with Newbridge Parishes, in particular with Father Ruairi O’Domhnaill and the Reverand Isobel Jackson. The Curragh in collaboration with the Parishes Race Day organising committee ensure we do all we can to make this a fun day out for all the community, in addition to raising funds for very worthy projects in our locality

We race here again at the Curragh in three weeks’ time for the first classics of the Irish flat season, the Tattersalls Irish 2000 and 1000 Guineas. We look forward to welcoming you back here that weekend (May 23rd – 25th) and regularly during the 2025 flat racing season.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. Impressive Dundalk maiden winner LADY IMAN should be hard to beat if able to replicate that form on grass. Well supported to make a winning debut, the daughter of Starman had clearly being showing plenty at home The form of that race has been well advertised subsequently, with both the runner-up and third placed horse going on to land their respective maidens. Power Blue, who won the opening juvenile race of the season over course and distance, holds every chance On collateral form, the Adrian Murray-trained colt has work to do with the selection but he is entitled to have improved from that initial run. True Love, a full-sister to a winning juvenile, has to be respected on her introduction.

The Paddy Twomey-trained CURRAWOOD should be progressive enough to cope with this rise in class. Placed in two maidens at this track last season, he opened his account at Dundalk towards the end of March. Back on grass last time, the son of Acclamation easily disposed of some smart previous winners to land a competitive contest at Cork. He certainly deserves to take his chance in Listed company here and holds every chance of completing the hat-trick. CHANTEZ was a smart juvenile last year and should be suited by this distance on her first start at three By Wootton Bassett, her previous races have all been at Leopardstown and having readily won her maiden, she landed September’s competitive Ingabelle Stakes. She has already beaten five of these rivals, with Garden Of Eden finishing second in the Ingabelle She disappointed in two subsequent runs here but returned lame having lost a shoe last September and is entitled to have come forward for last month’s reappearance Cercene is another to bear in mind.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

LOS ANGELES returns following a fine three-year-old season. KWA HERINI ran well in a recent handicap and has an unexposed profile Out of a Group 3-winning dam who has already bred five winners, the selection showed just mild promise at Dundalk last winter but ran a solid race over course-and-distance last month, with further progression possible She’s Smart ran well on soft ground at Navan recently and while she is also suited by a sound surface, her best form is at five furlongs.
