I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the first day of our three-day Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby weekend – the highlight of the racing season here at the Curragh. I hope that you have a good evening and find a winner or two.

We hope you will enjoy your visit to the Curragh, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures tonight as well as mobile food and beverage outlets, while after racing, the party will continue in Champions Hall with music by the The Whistlin Donkeys

We are very grateful to tonight’s sponsors – the Irish European Breeder Fund, Keadeen Hotel, Diageo Spirits, Fitzpatrick’s Garage Group , Schweppes, McGuinness Maintenance, O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey, and the Silken Thomas and Lock 13 for the support which they have given us this evening. This support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.

Tonight, also sees the running of the Corinthian Challenge here at the Curragh where thirteen amateur riders will ride over the Irish Derby course to raise monies for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund. This is our last race of the evening and please show your support for our riders as they take on this special challenge.

I would also like to thank all owners with runners here today also - we hope your experience is a good one and thank you for your support. Please enjoy the hospitality in the Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the grandstand.

We are now on the final countdown to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, and we look forward to another wonderful day’s racing tomorrow before the big one on Sunday.

I hope you enjoy your evening and look forward to welcoming you back here to the Curragh tomorrow and Sunday and many more times during the season.

A bright, alert expression & pricked ears are a good sign

Blinkers and visors keep a horse focused, often a negative because the horse is otherwise not concentrating on the race

Around The PaddockA Simple Guide

A fit horse is easy to see, very lean & tight

Look at the length between the saddle and the hindquarters: the longer the back, usually the further the horse will stay (10f+/ 1¼miles+)

A good walk: the hindleg gets well underneath, the hips dip & sway like a super model, the tail base will show the hip

A top-class Group 1 horse carries itself well, the good walk clear in the angle of hindquarters (bottom), large clear eye & ears

A short-coupled horse, rounder & plumper, is usually a better sprinter (5f/6f/7f)

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

TREAN finished with blistering speed on his recent debut and is taken to build on that promising effort. The half-brother to a couple of winners faces tougher rivals today, but big-race entries suggest there is plenty more to come from Paddy Twomey’s charge Abraham Lincoln is out of a Group 3-winning mare who has already produced two blacktype performers, while stablemate Haffner and Anchor Road, the half-brother to smart sprinter Beauty Crescent, are others to note

VALENTINO ECLIPSE has a good pedigree and showed nice ability on debut. From the family of Dubai Millennium, the half-brother to three winners recovered from a slow start at Leopardstown to finished a close second and is open to plenty of improvement. The four-year-old Loughrea ran well at Gowran in May He could feature along with the 79-rated Karrygrant, but Bang Bang looks vulnerable to more progressive types including the newcomer Gliondar

HEADGEAR EXPLAINED

Have you ever wondered why some horses wear headgear? Is it just a fashion accessory? Most definitely not. Headgear is a useful tool in the armoury of a trainer and is used to aid a horse’s performance on the track.

BLINKERS - Blinkers can be used to aid concentration. A half cup placed behind the horses eye helps them to keep looking forwards to focus on the job at hand - winning their race!

VISORS - Very similar to blinkers but with a slit cut in the side of the cup, which enables a horse to see the other runners around them.

CHEEKPIECES - Sheepskin Cheekpieces work on a similar principle to Blinkers and Visors but allow a slightly better range of vision.

EYE SHIELDS - Eye Shields are a fine mesh that covers the entire eye but they do allow full vision.

HOOD - Covering the ears and head, a hood is used for horses that are easily spooked by crowds or noises, rather than for concentration purposes.

NOSEBAND - A Noseband is designed to restrict the field of vision and encourage a horse to focus on the race, usually lowering their head in the process.

TONGUE STRAP - Horses do not breathe through their mouth but even so, it can hamper speed and performance to have their mouth open or tongue flopping about. A tongue strap prevents this by keeping the tongue in place for the duration of the race.

CURRAGH COMMENT

THEREWILLBEGLORY will likely benefit from her recent seasonal reappearance The runner-up on four occasions on turf last year, she was narrowly beaten at Dundalk on her first start for 218 days and looks on a workable mark for her handicap bow Tofino scored over C&D last August and has solid recent form. She should prove competitive, while Prevalence met trouble in-running here last month and beat Liberation Date (third) when landing a Dundalk maiden last November

CURRAGH COMMENT

The three-year-old INVINCIBLE WILL is already a dual winner over C&D and can continue to progress. Although he scored here on soft ground last September, it was quick going when successful on his latest start and Gavin Cromwell’s charge may well defy a 5lb rise Summer Island won here prior to finishing a decent second off today’s mark last month. He could land a blow, while Little Empire has been running well in valuable handicaps recently and goes well on fast ground.

WIN: INVINCIBLE WILL

DANGER: Summer Island

RACESPONSOR

Bernie Donohoe representing Schweppes will present prize to be awarded to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and a gift to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out.

HANDICAPS EXPLAINED

After three races on the track, the handicap rating system knows enough about a horse to give them an official rating, which in turn determines how much weight they carry in future contests.

For example, if one horse is rated 100, and the other is rated 95, the horse rated five points more than the other will essentially carry an additional 5lb in weight. Should the horse carrying 5lb extra continue to beat horses rated inferior to them or amongst those with similar figures, that horse would rise up the class system to tackle harder races against better individuals.

The aim of a handicap race is to give every horse an equal chance of winning, and the plan is to have every horse crossing the finish line at the same time - which is surprisingly yet to happen!

CURRAGH COMMENT

A race that often goes to a lightly-raced, improving three-year-old sees the hat-trick seeking DARIUS DARK hold leading claims. Unbeaten in both starts over this distance, the Johnny Murtagh-trained Dark Angel gelding remains capable of better on what is only his sixth career start. A game winner at Leopardstown last time, the application of first-time cheekpieces could eke out further improvement. Beaten just a length when third in that same contest, Keepsgettingbetter shouldn’t be far away A dual winner at Dundalk, the Donnacha O’Brien-trained filly showed that she handles turf just as effectively Eastern Peace and Faro Island also catch the eye with leading apprentices booked.

CURRAGH COMMENT

With the form of his Leopardstown third working out well, the Jessica Harrington-trained WYMAN can register a first career win. Entitled to be all the better for that first start since September, the Australia colt sets the standard. Numantia caught the eye staying on late when fourth over C&D on his introduction. Another who should have benefited from the outing, it would be no surprise to see an improved effort on this second run. An 84-rated colt, Changing Lanes was a beaten favourite last time, but could be capable of better now that connections have opted to drop him back in distance

CURRAGH COMMENT

BALLYADAM can follow up his recent Listowel win. Although now in the latter stages of his career, the Henry de Bromhead-trained 11-year-old retains plenty of enthusiasm and has been highly consistent under both codes in recent starts. Given that he was able to finish a creditable fourth off 152 in Cheltenham’s BetMGM Cup just three runs back, a mark of 83 doesn’t look beyond him. A staying-on third over two furlongs shorter here last month, Kilmeaden should relish the extra yardage. Too Bossy For Us also commands respect in a competitive affair.

One Mile and Four Furlongs (2,400 metres) Howth Post 1m 4f

BIO: I am from Kildare and my family have been involved with horses for as long as I can remember In 2006, I enrolled in RACE and gained valuable experience working in both Ireland and England, where I achieved my first victory in a point-to-point race Currently I am employed at Holmestead Saddlery and although I still enjoy riding and take care of my own hunters. Embracing this new challenge is exciting, and it will be incredibly special for my family to see me riding around our local track, the Curragh, during Derby weekend. I would like to thank James Fahey and Heather Heffernan for their help in preparing and also my sponsors Mongey Communications.

RIDER:GRAHAMATKINSON

BIO: From Upton in Co Cork I’ve always had a strong connection to the racing world. My brother Don Atkinson, used to be a point-to-point jockey and my cousin, Wayne Lordan, is renowned as one of Ireland’s top flat jockeys. In 2018, I achieved a significant victory in the Corinthian Challenge series, which involved three races. This year, I’ve decided to participate again, eager to regain my racing form and make my family proud, especially my wife, Theresa, and our kids, Lucy and Charlie I have been a long-time supporter of the charity and continue to volunteer whenever possible I’m passionate about raising awareness for Irish Injured Jockeys and the work they do

RIDER:IVANNADEMPSEY

BIO: I am from Clane, Co Kildare, and in 2020, alongside my studies, I began riding out for Ross O’Sullivan, where I well and truly got the bug for racing. Since then, I’ve been lucky to ride out for a number of trainers including Johnny Murtagh, Andrew McKeever, Brendan Walsh, Rod Northam and Bjorn Baker, gaining experience both at home and abroad. I graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science (Equine) from University College Dublin in 2024 and am a graduate of the Godolphin Flying Start programme I’ve always wanted to ride in a race, so the Corinthian Challenge is an incredible opportunity to push myself and experience it firsthand, and most importantly raising funds for Irish Injured Jockeys.

RIDER:ROBINDEPELSMAEKER

Bio: I am from Co Tipperary and currently based in England as an equine vet. I rode in the Corinthian Challenge last year and enjoyed every minute of it, so much so that I’m riding again this year, partnered with the same horse San Andreas, who was due to retire but is coming out for one last hurrah! Currently riding out regularly at Killahena McPherson Racing in the Cotswolds, I’m looking forward to coming home and once again enjoying the thrill of racing in The Curragh on the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Weekend in aid of such a wonderful organisation, the Irish Injured Jockeys.

RIDER:SARAHLIONTI

BIO: I’m originally from Lancashire and have been living in Kildare since September 2025. From a young age, I have been immersed in the world of horses, riding frequently and participating in various equestrian disciplines such as showing, show jumping, and hunting. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy while working full-time as Head Girl for Andrew Kinirons Racing Team. Since joining the racing industry, I quickly recognised how physically and mentally demanding it can be, one fall can dramatically alter a jockey’s life I have witnessed the remarkable work of the Irish Injured Jockeys charity, and being able to contribute to raising funds for such a noble cause would mean a great deal to me and many others.

RIDER:PATRICKSTRINGER

BIO: I am from Navan in Co Meath. The first time I sat on a horse I was 6 years old and from that moment, I fell in love I did some time in England and worked in Juddmonte stud for a few years breaking horses. I’m now working for Jack Davison coming up to 2 years now and the love has come back all over again for riding out every morning, even though I don’t think it ever left. I’m really looking forward to the day as it will be a great day out for my family and friends. I’m just going to enjoy the buzz of the day and of course the thrill of putting on the silks for one last time I would like to thank my sponsors Jack W Davison Racing, LH Welding. Any bit off support would be gratefully appreciated.

RIDER:PAULCALLAGHAN

BIO: Hailing from Meath Hill, County Meath, I have a lifelong passion for National Hunt racing. I began my career as an amateur jockey with Tom George, achieving my first win on Dellone in 2001. After three seasons, I transitioned to riding for various trainers, including Howard Johnson, where I notably won with Katmandu. Throughout my career, I rode for esteemed trainers and even worked with Monterosso, a future Dubai World Cup winner After transitioning to media due to injuries, I completed training with Racing TV and hold a business degree In January 2023, I joined The Irish Field as an Advertising Executive and engage in media work, including presenting on Racing TV I feel fortunate to remain in the industry supporting initiatives like the Irish Injured Jockeys.

RIDER:MAXFOLEY

BIO: I am from Carlow and began riding at the age of four My brother, Jack, who is now a trainer, was the Champion Conditional Jockey in 2022. Jason, another brother, earned the title of European Junior Champion in 2018 and triumphed in the World Young Horse Championships in 2019 I also achieved the 148 RDS Championship in 2018. Recently, I completed my bursary training with five-time Olympic medallist McLain Ward at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida. I’m eagerly anticipating the charity race and the opportunity to learn a different riding style, with plenty of tips from Michael O’Neill, a former winning rider

RIDER:JERRYSCULLY

BIO: I grew up in Limbo Stud, Creagh Skibbereen, West Cork and my life has always revolved around horses. I have been riding from the age of six, graduating from ponies to cobs to horses, a rural background of pony racing and hunting. I attended RACE 40 years ago and that whetted my appetite further but the tragic loss of my beloved mother Kathleen meant that I could not progress at that time and returned home I subsequently went to England and spent many years riding out. It is an honour and a dream come true to ride as a jockey on Limbocall, a horse I have known from a yearling, trained by Michael O’Callaghan and owned by my good friend Chynel Phelan.

RIDER:TARAMONEYPENNY

BIO: I am from Downpatrick and have been working as an exercise rider in Gordon Elliott Racing. Before this, I spent seven years in an eventing yard, competing up to the EI100 level. Having been involved in racing for over a year now I have always been a passionate supporter of the sport. I took part in the Pat Smullen race last year and that has really given me the racing bug. Witnessing the impact of the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund on riders and jockeys some of whom have become friends has inspired me to lend my support and raise funds for this worthy cause

CURRAGH COMMENT

SAN ANDREAS looks the class act in this race and should prove difficult to beat. A 10-time winner, the veteran has proved an ideal schoolmaster for young apprentices in recent times and should give his pilot a day to remember Recent Listowel third The Mediator looks the most likely danger The Gordon Elliott-trained gelding will be straighter after that outing and, on official ratings, he holds strong claims. Stablemate Spinola Bay helps give Elliott a strong hand. Twice successful over flights last season, he is entitled to make his presence felt.

WIN: SAN ANDREAS
