I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to our fifth meeting of the year here at the Curragh on the eve of the first Classics of the 2024 flat racing season.
We have a competitive eight race programme and some great music in the Champions Hall after racing.
As the flat season gets into full swing, our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.
Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we appreciate your support - and to our race sponsors Irish Stallion Farms, James Nolan’s Bar Kildare, Cavalor Equine Nutrition, Mongey Communications, Ryans Cleaning and Quinnbet, who are supporting tonight’s feature race.
We race again here tomorrow where the feature is the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas and on Sunday for the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas and the Tattersalls Gold Cup.
Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.
Best Wishes, Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive bkavanagh@curragh.ie

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BARTON KEY didn’t get a straightforward passage when showing promise on debut and might reverse form with New Theory, who was fifth. That form looks quite strong, with the runner-up scoring subsequently, and the selection merits plenty of respect. No Such Thing, whose dam was a winning juvenile, was a €50,000 yearling and concedes plenty weight, while Fairhaven is out of a Group 3 winner and is a half-sister to a Listed scorer but similarly has a lot of weight to carry Gazelle D’or and Gloriously Glam have each shown ability and can progress.

Earlier today the HRI Equine Welfare Department were delighted to host a symposium on equine welfare
“Changing Stride - The Way Ahead for Horse Racing Safety and Care.”
World-class speakers delivered stimulating presentations on the human factors involved in racehorse welfare, what a day in the life of a racehorse looks like, how a good start sets racehorses up for a good life, and what is done on racedays to ensure racehorse welfare.
There was also a solutions-focused session with ‘elevator pitch’ presentations from some of the leading companies working in this area
As part of the symposium researchers involved in the study of equine welfare presented posters about their work. We are delighted to showcase this work here this evening on the Level One concourse in the grandstand.

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.
This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

GLOBAL ENERGY has been running well recently and while much of his best form is on an easy surface, he ran well on good ground last time at Leopardstown. He has dropped back in distance in recent times and having won on heavy over a mile in March, has competed well twice subsequently, suggesting he should again get involved at the business end. Ferrybank has also done well in recent months and while much of that form was on the all-weather, he reverted to turf when also running well at Leopardstown last week. He is 3lb higher but should again prove competitive Karlsberg can cope with a 7lb hike for winning at Cork last month, but needs soft ground. WIN: GLOBAL ENERGY
