Curragh Racecard - Sunday 15th September

Page 1

I’m delighted to welcome you all to the Curragh this afternoon. It’s rare that one racecourse can boast four Group 1 races on the same card and what’s in store over the next few hours on day two of Irish Champions Festival is very special indeed.

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes and Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown come four more iconic Group 1 races. The strength and renown of this afternoon’s programme is key to the return of the World Pool to the Curragh. All four Group 1 races today are World Pool events, once again extending the reach of Irish Champions Festival and Irish racing around the globe.

The Comer Group International Irish St Leger is the final Irish Classic of the season and is the last of the Festival’s six Group 1 races. Our eight-race card this afternoon is also highlighted by the Group 1 Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes and two of the best two-year-old races we’ll see all season, the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, races which often determine the champion two-yearold filly and colt in Europe.

The globally successful World Pool has made a significant contribution to Irish racing in a very short space of time and we continue to partner with the Hong Kong Jockey Club as we look to expand on the number of race meetings and races promoted as World Pool events.

Our work with the HKJC, Tote and the Racecourse Media Group allows racing fans around the world to bet into a single pool with the opportunity for unequalled value for Tote customers. It all adds to the international flavour of the weekend and it is so encouraging to see runners from Japan, France, Germany and Britain in action across the 17 races.

Irish Champions Festival is the focus of what’s best in Irish racing. Your support is very much appreciated and I wish you all a most enjoyable day.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Course winner STRIKE RED is ground-versatile, ideally suited by this distance and finished second in a decent heritage handicap at York last month. He hasn’t won since landing the Scurry Handicap here in July 2023 but has performed consistently well in similar hot handicaps and, notably, finished ahead of today’s rival Torivega at Royal Ascot and is now 4lb better off with that rival. Torivega, out of a Group 2-winning dam, has had three luckless runs here this year but, being a four-year-old, might continue to progress further Heavenly Power beat Apache Outlaw (second) to win the August C&D race in which Torivega finished third and the pair have obvious form claims.

WIN: STRIKE RED DANGER: Torivega

POEMSFORWHENYOUCAN’TFIGHTWITHWORDS

The Irish Hospice Foundation and Poetry Ireland came together to offer people with life-threatening illnesses and their carers and the bereaved a few words when they were weighed down by illness and the prospect of dying. The result was Poems for When You Can’t Find the Words.

Our book of poetry, ‘Poems for When You Can’t Find the Words’, was edited by Mary Shine Thompson, and published by Gill Books. This collection provides the gift of words at a time when words can be hard to find and is designed to speak to the fears and concerns that illness and approaching death awaken.

Created in conjunction with Poetry Ireland and including poems from Seamus Heaney, Brendan Kennelly, Emily Dickinson and Paul Durcan, plus new commissions, this is a collection of words to comfort in the most troubled times. Whether you or a loved one are facing the end of life, or if you’re grieving the loss of someone close, you will find solace and refuge here.

CURRAGH COMMENT

PURPLE LILY endured a rough passage in the Irish Oaks but holds today’s other three-year-olds on previous form and can also defeat older rivals. She failed by half a length against subsequent English Oaks winner Ezeliya at Navan in April and may have been unsuited by dropping to a mile in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, but the Irish Oaks form here in July is strong with the first two home going on to fill the same positions in the Yorkshire Oaks. The selection has 2lb to find with American Sonja on official ratings and, while she is suited by this distance and finished second in a Deauville Group 1 recently, Joseph O’Brien’s charge would prefer some cut in the ground. Elizabeth Jane was a length and a half behind the selection in the Irish Oaks and has solid place claims.

LASTYEAR’SRACE

British raider Fallen Angel confirmed the good impression she made when winning at Newmarket to take this in impressive style. Ryan Moore sent the hot favourite Ylang Ylang into the lead, with the Ballydoyle filly stalked in second place by eventual winner Fallen Angel. There was little change inside the first four furlongs but coming down to the two,

Ylang Ylang gave way to the strong travelling Clipper filly Danny Tudhope moved his mount into the lead, followed closely by Amo Racing’s Ornellaia. Coming inside the final half a furlong, Fallen Angel beat off the challenges of Ornellaia and despite a late lunge by Vespertillio, she was always doing enough to land the spoils.

GUINEASGLORY

In more recent years, this race has served as a great pointer for both the Irish and English 1000 Guineas. Minding was the first of the more recent winners, scoring in the 2016 English 1000 Guineas. She has since been followed by fellow Ballydoyle filly Love in 2020. The last two renewals of the Irish 1000 Guineas have also been taken by winners of this race, Tahirya (23 and Fallen Angel last year

BRITISHSUCCESS BREEDERS’CUP

Despite the obvious Irish success, there have been a few occasions where British trainers have taken this race back across the Irish Sea. Chimes Of Freedom in 1989 was a high profile winner for Henry Cecil. She has since been joined by Twafeaj (91), Sayyedati (92), Lemon Souffle (93), Bianca Nera (96). More recent high profile winners include Sky Lantern in 2012 and last years winner Fallen Angel.

In 2009 the race became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, with the winner earning themselves automatic invitation. Sky Lantern became the first to take up this engagement but could only manage eighth after being sent off favourite. A few more have since contested the race but none have yet managed to win the contest.

LEADING TRAINERS?

Since 2000, no trainer has come close to threatening Aidan O’Brien’s steadfast grip on this race. He racked up an impressive nine wins, the first of which came back in 2000 courtesy of Sequoyah. Prior to that, the wins came from a variety of different yards, Jim Bolger, John Oxx and Vincent O’Brien had both racked up two wins by the turn of the century. Since then, Jim Bolger has added another winner to the roll of honour, Saoirse Abu in 2007, but he still remains 6 behind leading trainer Aidan O’Brien. Sons Donnacha and Josepgh both have one win to their name but have a long way to go before taking their fathers title. Today Aidan is represented by Bedtime Story, Lake Victoria and Exactly

TOPOWNERS

With Ballydoyle so dominant in the race, it’s no surprise to see Coolmore as the leading owner Since 2000, they’ve had 10 winners: Sequoyah (2000), Necklace (2003), Rumplestiltskin (2005), Again (2008), Misty for Me (2010), Maybe (2011), Minding (2015), Happily (2017), Love (2019), Shale (2020).

WHOARETHE SPONSORS?

Only one jockey has managed to ride four winners, the jockey in question, Christy Roche. All his four wins came in a six year period, with the first in 1974 (Tender Camilla and the last in 1980 (Arctique Royale). Despite not riding for a number of years, no jockey has managed to join that level on success however Ryan Moore sits on two winners and could add to this total today.

Walter Haefner founded Moyglare Stud in 1962. Haefner was an excellent horseman and in 1963 became Fegentri Champion Amateur, at the age of 53. He was an active supporter of Irish racing through his association with The Turf Club, RACE and the Irish Equine Centre. In 1973 he founded the Moyglare Stud Stakes, a race which boasts one of the longest continual race sponsorships in the world. His legacy lives on today with his daughter Eva Maria carrying on the family tradition of breeding and racing top class horses.

BEDTIME STORY has been kept ticking over since her Royal Ascot romp and will be primed for this first Group 1 attempt. By Frankel and out of dual Nunthorpe Stakes winner Mecca’s Angel, she is a really smart filly and has won twice since Ascot at the expense of stablemate Exactly Simmering was flattered to finish as close to Fairy Godmother as she did in the Albany Stakes but, nonetheless, she won in good style at Deauville last month. She seemed to benefit from stepping up to this distance that day and is noted. Lake Victoria and Red Letter met over C&D in June and are up in class.

LASTYEAR’SRACE

Moss Tucker confirmed the drop in trip from his Phoenix Sprint success proved no issue to take home gold in the 2023 renewal. Billy Lee made nothing complicated and launched Moss Tucker into a strong early position. Given the downpour of rain and a bit of cut in the ground, his chances were boosted before the off and this proved a game changer

DISTANCE

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres) PRIZEMONEY

€400,000

He narrowly edged into third inside the furlong, chasing down Get Ahead and Equality, but proved he had the stamina and determination to gallop strongly to the line, confirming himself as a true Group 1 animal when the conditions are right.

HISTORYOFTHERACE?

The Flying Five Stakes, now sponsored by Bar One Racing, was established in 1985 and was formerly held at Phoenix Park at Listed level, for two-year-olds and upwards and also at Leopardstown. Rising through the ranks, the race was moved to the Curragh in 2002 and earned its Group 1 status only 6 years ago in 2018.

DUALWINNERS?

The legendary Benbaun is the most successful horse in the race, winning three consecutive renewals between 2005 and 2007. Prior to that, Flowing, Tropical and Tedburrow both produced back-to-back victories in the 90’s. In the modern era, there has yet to be another dual-winner but could Moss Tucker follow up on last year’s victory today?

COURSEAND DISTANCEFORM

Nine of the previous 13 winners have had at least one run at the Curragh, so it could worth taking a chance on something with course form.

Moreover, the distance is also an important factor when trying to choose a winner, with ten of the past 13 winners having at least two victories over this trip

LEADING CONNECTIONS?

This contest has always been an ultracompetitive contest so Dermot Weld has done a remarkable job to lead with five winners. He won the inaugural renewal with Committed in 1985. He then went on to land a four-timer between 1991-1995. In recent times, Aidan O’Brien leads the way with three wins, with the latest coming with Fairyland in 2019.

Michael Kinane again adds himself to the list of honours by riding a record six winners. Four of these came with Dermot but also scored on Ishiguru and Ringmoor Down in the early 2000’s. Ryan Moore is the one to follow recently and today rides Believing.

WINANDYOU’REIN

Along with the Moyglare Stud Stakes, this race is part of the ‘Breeders Cup Win and You’re In’. A successes in this race gains the winner an entry into the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint worth a $1million.

There have been numerous horses to attempt to conquer America but only Glass Slippers has completed the double Trained by Kevin Ryan, Glass Slippers powered home the Del Mar straight under Tom Eaves to beat the American speedsters in their own back yard.

MOSTSUCCESSFUL?

One of the best winners of the race was Caraveggio who landed the contest as a three year old.

In 2022, Highfield Princess became the domestic sprinting Queen. She has an outstanding résumé, landing the Prix Maurice De Gheest, Nunthorpe and Flying Five in a phenomenal career

Others to note include Benbaun, Reverence, Sole Power and Glass Slippers.

CURRAGH COMMENT

BRADSELL has underperformed in two course runs but is top class when conditions are in his favour Winner of the 2022 Coventry Stakes, he disappointed in the Phoenix Stakes here as a juvenile but has since found his niche running over this distance He won the King’s Stand as a three-year-old and, while he disappointed in this race last year, softening ground blunted his speed that day and he should take all of the beating if replicating his Nunthorpe Stakes performance. Believing finished second in the Nunthorpe and should again run well, while last year’s winner Moss Tucker might need a bit of cut underfoot.

PRIZEMONEY

Stunning Peach’s race looked over from the start as she was slow out the gates. Bucanero Fuerte failed to stay the seven furlongs which left the door wide open for Ryan Moore on the son of Dubawi, extending five lengths clear as they hit the line

It was easy to see why this colt was the stable’s number one, as he had plenty of knee action and was a class above on the day

WHYISITANIMPORTANTRACE?

Run over the seven furlongs trip, this race attracts the best of the best juveniles from both Ireland and Great Britain. Therefore, it has proved a very good guide to finding the following season’s Guineas winner due to many of them stepping up in trip with age The likes of Churchill, Gleneagles, Dawn Approach and George Washington are some recent prime examples.

HISTORYOFTHERACE MOSTIMPRESSIVE PERFFROMANCE?

The event was established in 1849, and it was originally called the National Produce Stakes and then the National Stakes. The inaugural running was won by Chatterbox over 170 years ago

The National Stakes was classed at Group 2 level, before achieving Group 1 status in 1985. It was then added to become part of the Irish Champions Weekend fixture in 2014.

In an extra-ordinary effort, Godolphin’s fabulous Pinatubo stunned his rivals by nine lengths in the 2019 renewal.

He travelled through the race like a dream and showed an abnormal turn of foot to stun some quality opposition.

LEADING JOCKEYS

The much missed Lester Piggott won the race on no less than four occasions, with success flowing from Cellini (1973) to Fatherland (1992). This record could only be matched by the legendary Michael Kinane who also rode four winners during his 34 year career in the saddle Kinane’s most famous success in this race came aboard Hawk Wing.

Of the current crop, the all blue of William Buick has seen himself in the Winners Enclosure on three separate occasions, while Ryan Moore and Declan McDonogh are both tied on two wins a peice Today Ryan rides Henri Matisse and Declan rides Cowardofthecounty

HOWDOBRITISH

RUNNERSFARE?

Despite Aidan O’Brien’s dominance, the British still hold a fair record in this race Tap On Wood scored for Barry Hills in 1978 and it was only eight years later when Lockton crossed the Irish Sea for success. Of more recent times, Godolphin landed the spoils with Quorto (2018), Pinatubo (2019) and their short reign ended with Native Trail (2021).

LEADINGTRAINERS?

Vincent O’Brien saddled a record-breaking 15 winners in the National Stakes, a record that has not been broken in many years. His domination started with Sir Ivor in 1967 and it was not long before Vincent won three consecutive renewals between 1971-1973. His final successes flowed with El Prado (1991) and Fatherland (1992) before retiring from the game in 1994.

This record, however, is now close to being surpassed by Aidan O’Brien and his current Coolmoore operation. He has achieved success twelve times in the past 27 years - a remarkable training performance. Aidan has saddled generational talents such as Mastercraftsman, Gleneagles, and Churchill in more recent times and today saddles Henri Matisse, Rock Of Cashel and The Parthenon.

WHOARETHE SPONSORS?

Goffs is a bloodstock auction house that sells horses at sales throughout the year They have sales in Ireland and the UK, including a boutique sale at Kensington Palace before Royal Ascot. Goffs’ sales offer nearly 10,000 horses each year.

NATIONALSTAKES(GROUP1)

HONOURINGATRUELEGEND OFTHETURF

If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does.

From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard.

However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and Influential sons of his including Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor.

The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs.

At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982

Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983).

Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. Hopefully today’s renewal will live up to the high standard that Vincent helped to set in the race during the course of his remarkable career.

CURRAGH COMMENT

HENRI MATISSE is still a work in progress but can progress further Out of a Group 1-winning dam, none of his wins have been flashy performances and while displaying signs of inexperience in both the Railway Stakes and the Futurity, he finished that latest race quite well and is ideally suited by this distance Aomori City also seemed to benefit from stepping up to this distance when winning at Goodwood in July He had previously finished third to subsequent Prix Morny winner Whistlejacket at Newmarket, while the form of his recent win was subsequently boosted by the third-placed colt winning at Group 2 level. Hill Road stays well as he impressively won his maiden over a mile, but steps up markedly in class.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

It was at this point David Egan sent him for home and despite the best urgings of Ryan Moore, there was not enough in the tank for Kyprios to go with the leader He did plug on well but this race was all about Roger Varian’s four-year-old, who came home the winner by 3 1/2 lengths.

WHYISITANIMPORTANTRACE?

Unlike it’s British counterpart, this race gives an opportunity for the classic generation to be pitted against their older rivals. Since 2014, there have been 3 three-year-olds to win the race, the latest being Search For A Song back in 2019 Today The Euphrates represents this age group.

DUALWINNERS CLOSEFINISHES

Since the Comer Group International Irish St Leger became an open-age race in 1983, there have been multiple repeat winner The most successful of which was Vinnie Roe, winning the race four times in a row between 2001 and 2004. Vintage Crop became the fist dual winner in 1993 and 1994 and has since been followed by the likes of Kayf Tara, Order Of St George and Search For A Song Can Kyprios join this illustrious list today?

The closest finish came in 2011, when Duncan and Jukebox Jury could not be split by the judge. The pair had it between them at the top of the straight and settled down to fight out arguably the most to and fro finish in the races history. It looked as though Jukebox Jury had just done enough to hold his rival but a late lunge meant the pair dead-heated.

LEADING TRAINERS?

Vincent O’Brien and Dermot Weld sit as joint leaders atop the tree of most successful trainers in this race. Vincent O’Brien registering nine wins in an illustrious career The last of those came in 1988 courtesy of Dark Lomond. Dermot Weld was responsible for training the races most successful horse in Vinnie Roe and also trained two other dual-winners in Vintage Crop and Search For A Song Aidan O’Brien sits on six winners, so could move to just two behind the leading pair if Kyprios can deliver the goods.

ONTHECLOCK

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 2:57.15 was set by Brown Panther in 2014, which is the quickest time over that period. The runner was trained by Tom Dascombe and ridden by Richard Kingscote. The slowest winning time was set in 2009 when Alandi won in a time of 3:14.82, ridden by Mick Kinane.

LEADINGRIDER?

WHOARETHE SPONSORS?

Morny Wing is the one they all have to beat to become leading rider His first win came over 100 years ago, but still no jockey has managed to surpass his seven winners.

Pat Smullen and Mick Kinane both came close with four winners apiece. While of the current crop Ryan Moore leads the way on three wins and he’ll be hoping Kyprios can find the Winners’ Enclosure today to take him level with Pat Smullen and Mick Kinane.

CURRAGH COMMENT

KYPRIOS was beaten in this at a short price last year but has looked back to his brilliant best this term and should prove the class act. The son of Galileo had an injury interrupted campaign last term but has been flawless in four starts this year, winning his second Ascot Gold Cup and most recently running out an impressive victor of the Goodwood Cup Giavellotto looks the obvious danger and will make sure it’s a solid test. He steps back up in trip after a cosy Group 2 success at Newmarket in July He beat Vauban in fine style in the Yorkshire Cup in May, while Willie Mullins’ charge restored his confidence on the Knavesmire last month.

WIN: KYPRIOS DANGER: Giavellotto

THANKYOU

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the support of stable staff today with over €5,000 presented to grooms across our race programme including generous presentations to grooms in charge of horses judged to be best turned. We would also like to thank Moyglare Stud for their ongoing sponsorship of the Stable Staff Canteen. Their support provides a complimentary meal to all stable staff working today.

CURRAGH COMMENT

SPIRIT D’OR can give trainer Gavin Hernon a big winner here. The Invincible Spirit filly ran well to finish fourth in Listed company at Deauville on her penultimate start and there is an Irish line of form to work with there as the consistent Shamrock Breeze was just denied in that race The handicapper has given the maiden winner a mark of 93 and she sets the standard. Aidan O’Brien tries cheekpieces on Right And True and he could be a big player after solid placed efforts in maidens the last twice English raiders have a fine record in this and Karl Burke’s Unspoken Love drops in class.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Ryan Moore gave WIGMORE STREET a fantastic ride to win here 15 days ago and there looks scope for further improvement from the American Pharoah gelding. He came with a late charge to gain a head victory in the Irish Cambridgeshire and going another couple of furlongs now should suit. Gerry Keane had a memorable day when taking this last year with Crystal Black and Genuine Article could run a big race again for the same connections. He was a touch unlucky when fourth at Galway recently and is tried in blinkers now Former Group 1 winner Helvic Dream has been eased a few pounds and is interesting back in handicap company

WIN: WIGMORE STREET

DANGER: Genuine Article
