The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Ger Lyons was expecting a big debut performance from RED LETTER over C&D and the daughter of Frankel performed well when narrowly defeated by the Ballydoyle-trained Lake Victoria. The pair pulled nicely clear of the remainder and the form of that race received a couple of boosts at Leopardstown on Thursday Aidan O’Brien introduces Ballet Slippers, who is the first foal of multiple Group 1 winner Magical and is partnered by Ryan Moore, and the Wootton Bassett filly Whirl. Dermot Weld sent out an impressive juvenile debut winner at Leopardstown during the week and Deressa is well entered up in Pattern races, which is also the case with Sunglow and Varshini. Despite a slight peck leaving the stalls, Colin Keane managed to get plenty of cover for Kairyu in the stands side group. Gaenari initially raced alone form the rest of the pack but was bought over by Leigh Roche to contest the lead with The Caribbean. Those in front of Keane began to get quite animated in the saddle, while Kariyu was smuggled into the race She caught the eye entering the final furlong and once given a flick of the reigns, moved into the lead. Try as she might, Pearls And Rubies couldn’t bridge the gap and Kairyu came home a ready winner.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Sent off odds-on favourite, BABOUCHE showed speed throughout when bolting up by five lengths in a maiden at Cork last month. It is a vote of confidence from her trainer that he pitches her in against colts for this Group 3 contest on just her second start. Course maiden winner Cowardofthecounty had Camille Pissarro behind when beaten less than two lengths in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot but the latter, Ryan Moore’s pick from three Ballydoyle-trained runners, was touched off in a similar race here on his previous start and is capable of better California Dreamer went close in a Group 2 here on Irish Derby weekend and is another to note

CURRAGH COMMENT

KENDALL ROY may have a slight class edge over these rivals and can resume winning ways. Katie McGivern’s sprinter was winning for the fourth time in five starts when landing a premier handicap for three-year-olds over C&D last month. He was out of the money in the Rockingham Handicap last time but a couple of horses who finished behind him have been successful since Ostraka was a debut winner over 6f here last year but her best handicap run came over 5f at Cork and she will appreciate this return to the minimum distance Eruption has enjoyed a fine season with two wins and two seconds from six starts and cannot be overlooked.

WIN: KENDALL ROY DANGER: Ostraka

Order Of Australia made it back-to-back wins in the Romanised Minstrel Stakes under Ryan Moore. He was sent into the lead from flag fall, tracked in second by Pearls Galore and Willy Lee. They were the fancied runners in the market before the off and once Ryan Moore began to up the pace, it soon became a straight shoot out between the pair As the Ballydoyle runner began to go through the motions, it quickly became apparent that he had too much class for his rivals and came home an impressive three and a half length winner.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment.

This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

BREATHE AGAIN appears to be progressing with each run and receives weight all round on her handicap debut. The Sheila Lavery-trained filly kept on well in the straight to take third behind Flight Of Fancy last time over a mile at Limerick and the form looks solid with the winner placed during the week in a Listed race at Killarney Four Blondes, Serious Notions and Glen Princess all won maidens last time, while Back Down Under and Indigo Five both scored over 7f here on their latest start, the latter landing a Premier Handicap on Irish Derby day WIN: BREATHE AGAIN DANGER: Four Blondes

MeadowCourt

The Curragh is delighted to welcome Al Shira’aa Racing as a race sponsor today for the first time. Owned by Sheikha Fatima bin Hazza Al Nahyan and managed by Kieran Lalor, their Irish base is located at Meadow Court Stud located close to the Curragh. They purchased the farm in 2016 from Eimear Mulhern.

The Stud was originally owned and developed by the legendary trainer Paddy “Darkie” Prendergast who named the stud after his famous 1965 Irish Derby winner

Paddy had sent out Meadow Court to beat all bar the brilliant Sea Bird II in the Epsom Derby, but in the absence of that French superstar the 1965 Irish Sweeps Derby appeared to be Meadow Court’s for the taking.

Ridden, as he had been at Epsom, by Lester Piggott, Meadow Court was sent off 11-to-10 favourite to beat twenty rivals and duly did so with two lengths to spare from English challenger Convamor In giving his trainer a fourth Irish Derby following Dark Warrior (1950) , Thirteen of Diamonds (1952) and Ragusa (1963), Meadow Court provided Lester Piggott with the first of five such triumphs in Ireland’s premier classic. Bred by American Pansy Parker Poe, Meadow Court was owned in partnership by Max Bell, Frank McMahon and Bing Crosby. The last-named enchanted the Curragh crowd with his impromptu rendition of ‘When Irish Eyes Are Smiling’ in the winner’s enclosure.

Meadow Court went on to emulate Ragusa when demolishing a high-class field in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on his reappearance. Beaten as much by the soft going as the mud-loving Provoke in the St Leger, Meadow Court bowed out when only ninth to Sea Bird II in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Meadow Court proved infertile at stud in England, prompting Max Bell to buy out his syndicate partners, intent on putting the horse back in training in Canada, without success. On Max Bell’s death in 1972, Meadow Court passed to his daughter, for whom he covered a strictly limited book of mares with some success.

Lily Pond was sent into a prominent position to track the early pace set by Galleria Borghese and Wayne Lordan. Favourite Purple Pay sat just a length away in third, with the field fanning out as they moved into the home straight. Lily Pond came under pressure as they came inside the two furlong pole but stuck her head down and battled gamely Purple Pay looked as though she would kick on but faded inside the final hundred yards as the stamina of Lily Pond kicked in power her into the lead, eventually landing the prize.

CURRAGH COMMENT

JACKIE OH is the clear pick on form following a solid campaign last year and it will be interesting to see how strong she is in the market on her belated seasonal debut. The Galileo filly won a Group 3 over a similar trip on soft ground at Gowran last summer and finished off the season when placed in Group 1 events at Longchamp and Ascot. American Sonja made a successful start to the year over 1m2f at Longchamp but couldn’t find any extra in the closing stages at Saratoga last month, while Caernarfon enters calculations after showing improved form to land a Listed race at Pontefract recently Sparks Fly would be well suited by any rain.

SIDIZA made a bright start when keeping on well into third behind Hanalia over 1m2f here in May The form of that maiden has been working out well since and the daughter of Sea The Moon is bred to appreciate this extra quarter-mile Ephesus was placed on his opening two starts, including when making a promising debut behind stablemate London City at Dundalk in April, but the Galileo colt finished four lengths behind Rosso when disappointing at Leopardstown last time and needs to bounce back with cheekpieces fitted for the first time Kalkanli and Kaptain Bay are others to consider with plenty of scope for improvement.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Gordon Elliott is well represented in this charity race and NDAAWI looks the pick. The dual-purpose gelding won twice on the Flat for Andrew Balding and has done well over hurdles for current connections, winning a Naas maiden and finishing third in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. The selection was a creditable seventh when returning to the level last month in the 2m4f Ascot Stakes. Jessica Harrington has three runners and Jungle Cove may prove the main threat having won four times on the Flat, including valuable handicaps at Leopardstown and Ascot. If You Let Me and Endless Pursuit are others to consider
