WELCOMETOTHECURRAGH

I would like to warmly welcome you to the Curragh today for our fourth Classic of the 2024 flat racing season – the Juddmonte Irish Oaks and what a race we have, with our biggest Oaks field since 2010. International runners have enjoyed much success at the Curragh so far this season and we are delighted to see such strong British and French participation here today.

Many thanks to all owners with runners today – we greatly appreciate your support - and to our race sponsors - Irish Stallion Farms, Barberstown Castle, Paddy Power plc, Comer Group International, DMG Media, La Celia Wines and of course our feature race sponsors Juddmonte who are fantastic partners for the Curragh and great supporters of Irish racing. The third race today is being run today in memory of the recently deceased David Power a greatly respected and sadly missed member of the Irish racing and bookmaking community. We welcome David’s family and friends here today.

We are delighted with the declared runners for all races and there is competitive racing throughout. After racing, there is music by the Rambling Rovers in Lilywhites Bar.

Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.

We race again here tomorrow with a competitive card featuring the Romanised Minstrel Stakes and finishing with the Corinthian Challenge which is an important fundraiser for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund.

Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.

Best Wishes, Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive bkavanagh@curragh.ie

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

CURRAWOOD was noted staying on in third over C&D on debut last month, which makes him a big player The horses in fifth and sixth have since shed their maiden tags to give a solid look to the form. He holds an entry in the Group 1 National Stakes. Aidan O’Brien’s Ides Of March has big-race entries and can improve from an opening fourth over a furlong shorter at this track. Dakota Blue ran well in second at Tipperary without landing a blow on the winner, while O’Brien’s The Lion In Winter was an expensive acquisition and certainly merits a market check ahead of his racecourse bow

CURRAGH COMMENT

Joseph O’Brien has landed three of the last four renewals of this race and has a leading contender in RUDI’S APPLE. This No Nay Never colt was a creditable sixth in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot before being outgunned in second at Fairyhouse by a useful sort. Shimmy Jimmy has to rate a danger in receipt of plenty of weight. He showed good resolution to beat a big field in a maiden at Navan last weekend. Snapdragon hasn’t been beaten overly far in three maidens and ought to get involved for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, while Withoutfurtherado showed marked improvement in third at Down Royal.

WIN: RUDI’S APPLE

DANGER: Shimmy Jimmy

INMEMORY OFDAVIDPOWER

A bright light went out in Irish racing and bookmaking on July 8th with the passing of David Power. The Curragh Racecourse would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to David’s wife Sabena and their children Willie, Paddy, Shani and Tessa on their sad loss. We are thinking of you all at this time.

David was a great friend to the Curragh Racecourse in multiple capacities as a bookmaker, sponsor, owner and shareholder and he rarely missed a meeting here. For many years David operated the number one pitch in the ring at the Curragh and in 2015, David and Sabena enjoyed great success here as owners when Sole Power was successful in the Flying Five Stakes, enabling the race to be upgraded to Group 1 status.

It was always a pleasure to meet David at the races and you left any encounter with him feeling better informed and advised. We are delighted that David’s former colleagues in Paddy Power PLC have decided to commemorate David by renaming the Scurry Handicap today in his name. Included in the declarations for the race is the family-owned Heavenly Power, trained by Eddie Lynam, and wouldn’t it be a poignant moment if he could win today.

We will ask you to observe a minute’s silence in David’s memory in advance of the David Power Memorial Premier Handicap.

CURRAGH COMMENT

MY MATE ALFIE has been consistent in stakes company since being fitted with blinkers and had Tango Flare back in third when landing a Listed prize here on Derby weekend. The handicapper left his mark alone and Ger Lyons’ charge may be able to follow up Top-weight Tango Flare is 5lb better off with the selection and there may not be much between them at the revised weights. Prolific winner Mr Wagyu hasn’t struck since landing this prize two years ago but comes here in good heart, while Heavenly Power, second here last time, would certainly be a poignant winner Greek Flower, a fast-finishing runner-up over 5f on her latest outing, is another for the shortlist.

He broke smartly under David Allan to sit in second in second behind fellow British raider, White Lavender As she fell away following her early exertions, Tim Easterbys charge was left to travel powerfully into an uncontested lead. He was held onto until they entered the final furlong, when he was then sent on by Allan, to win his race in the colours of King Power Racing.

CURRAGH COMMENT

As ever, a strong challenge from Britain for this Group 2 contest and BELIEVING gets the vote A Group 3 and three-time Listed winner, she ran two fine races within five days in Group 1 company at Royal Ascot. The form of her Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes fourth was boosted in the July Cup, and she had Makarova over two lengths behind over this trip earlier that week. Makarova has since won a Group 3 at Sandown and merits respect along with dual 5f Listed winner Beautiful Diamond, who may fare best of the three-year-olds. Not beaten far at this level in the Greenlands Stakes over 6f here in May, Ano Syra looks the main hope for the home team.

The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.

WHOAREJUDDMONTE

Juddmonte is the international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding enterprise founded in 1980 by the late Prince Khalid bin Abdullah. Under Prince Khalid’s vision and direction, Juddmonte has, for over 40 years, consistently produced top-class homebred thoroughbred horses competing at the highest level on racecourses across the world. They have bred over 100 individual Group/Grade 1 winners of over 200 Group/Grade 1 races, with their horses racing in Prince Khalid’s famous pink, green and white colours.

HISTORY

The event was established in 1895, and it was originally contested over a mile. It was extended to its present length in 1915.

The field usually includes fillies which ran previously in the Epsom Oaks, and several have won both races. This year looks a bumper edition with fourteen runners, the most since we had 15 back in 2010.

Since then, a whole host of horses have done the illustrious double Fair Salinia (1978), Blue Wind (1981) and Unite (1987) all won on both sides of the Irish Sea. Ouja Board claimed victory in both in 2004. While more recently Enable came over to romp home for the Gosden’s The late Snowfall was the last to do it in 2021.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Trained in France by Cork native Gavin Hernon, DARE TO DREAM got a taste of the Curragh when third to Content over a mile in the autumn. A Group 3 winner in April, she didn’t have the clearest of runs when a creditable fifth in the Prix de Diane and her trainer is confident that the daughter of Camelot will relish this step up to 1m4f. Content, the choice of Ryan Moore, ran well against classy older rivals when third over 1m2f in the Pretty Polly, while stablemate Port Fairy proved her effectiveness over this trip when outstaying Lava Stream in the Ribblesdale Leopardstown maiden winner Lope De Lilas is highly regarded, but takes a steep rise in class.

SAY IT WITH MOËT

Emily Dickinson proved her staying prowess 12 months ago when, after being held up in midfield, picked up stylishly to land the prize. They’d gone an honest enough gallop in the early stages, with Young Ireland and Gooloogong battling it out on the front end. Amusement was the first to lay down a serious challenge under Gavin Ryan but was headed by Rosscarberry and Emily Dickinson. The pair settled down to battle it out but it was Ryan Moore, who pulled out more to win going away

CURRAGH COMMENT

Turning for home in the Ascot Gold Cup, VAUBAN was travelling as well as eventual winner Kyprios but the 2m4f was a bridge too far for Willie Mullins’ talented dual-purpose performer, who emptied to finish fourth. Back at the trip over which he was second in the Yorkshire Cup, he can confirm the form of that race with Tower Of London. A winner of valuable staying prizes in Saudi Arabia and Dubai early in the year, perhaps Tower Of London was feeling the effects of his travels when below par at York and a brighter display is expected after a break. Shamida, a dual Group 3 winner over this trip last term, returns after 10 months off WIN: VAUBAN DANGER: Tower Of London

CURRAGH COMMENT

PUTURHANDSTOGETHER had Courageous Strike just over a length behind in third when going down narrowly to Tachos over an extended 1m1f at Gowran last month. The Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding has progressed when steadily stepped up in trip and Courageous Strike subsequently gave the form a boost when successful here over 1m4f Siege Of Troy carries top-weight on handicap debut after winning a maiden over C&D last month, while Gibbs Island had the staying-on pair It’sonlyjustbegun and Slurricane behind when runner-up over a similar trip at Roscommon. Lord Church is bidding for a four-timer and is another to bear in mind.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Kailasa and WHITE CLOVER were separated by about a length when both made their debut behind Zaynab over C&D on testing ground in April. The Joe Murphy-trained filly was subsequently third to Igor Stravinsky and Apricot Ice (won both outings since) at Leopardstown, while Kailasa hasn’t really progressed and finished almost three lengths off Castanets when the pair were placed in the Roscommon maiden won by Serious Notions. Castanets could well step forward from that debut effort and rates a greater threat than Counterculture, who is closely matched with Nunc Est Bibendum on running behind Glen Princess at Gowran.

WIN: WHITE CLOVER

DANGER: Castanets
