Sunday 30th June 2024
On behalf of Dubai Duty Free, I would like to welcome you all to The Curragh Racecourse for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
A great deal has happened in the past year: Dubai Duty Free celebrated its 40th Anniversary on 20th December 2023 and ended the year with record sales of US$2.16 billion.
This remarkable achievement was due in no small part to the hard work of our 5,800 employees and I join our Chairman, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in thanking them for their continued commitment.
On 31st May 2024, Mr Colm McLoughlin retired as our Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, after 41 years at the helm of the company. Colm is a familiar face in Ireland and I am delighted that both Colm and his wife Breeda are with us here today.
Dubai Duty Free is continuing to invest in retail upgrades at Dubai International Airport resulting in a better shopping experience for our customers Plans include refurbishing our Arrivals shops across all terminals as well as opening new boutiques for Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Cartier next year
The recent announcement of the US$35 billion new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which will ultimately enable the airport to handle a passenger capacity of 260 million, is a clear indication of the continued importance of the Aviation sector to Dubai.
Dubai Duty Free has also continued to promote Dubai as a leading business and leisure destination through its sponsorship of major sporting events including the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, which offers a rich purse of €1.25 million and reaches a wide TV audience.
Other major sporting events on our calendar include the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and attracts the top WTA and ATP tennis players in the world. This year’s tournament, which generated US$468 million in TV coverage, was won by Jasmine Paolini and Ugo Humbert, both of whom claimed their maiden Dubai titles.
I would like to thank The Curragh Racecourse and Horse Racing Ireland for their support and I wish everyone a pleasant day of racing and entertainment.
Ramesh Cidambi Managing Director Dubai Duty Free

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

FORMAL DISPLAY boasts a top-class pedigree, being out of a Group 1-winning mare and a sibling to smart types, and Ger Lyons’ colt makes plenty of appeal on handicap debut, having not received a clear passage in a Listed event at Leopardstown recently against older horses. Sharinay has proven handicap form and had his recent Naas run significantly boosted by the winner, Chicago Critic, subsequently finishing third in Royal Ascot’s Jersey Stakes last week. Princess Child has smart form in her native France and while lacking a recent outing, she finished second at Listed level on her previous run in November
WIN: FORMAL DISPLAY
DANGER: Sharinay
Mick Halford and Tracey Collins will be an unfamiliar name to International punters in the World Pool and are likely to be underbacked, so you may be able to find some extra value here by putting your local knowledge to good use. They run the lightly raced SHARINAY in this, who is a winner already and was 2nd last time out to Chicago Critic, who franked the form when beaten only a length by Haatem in the G3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. Off a mark of 95, he should be able to win again.
Selection: Sharinay (Tote Win)
Amo Racing came into the race with a strong hand and it was their pair who set the early pace, in what looked a competitive renewal. Lightening Army went off a frightening early pace under Gary Halpin and was very much a pace setter for eventual winner Bucanero Fuerte As Lightening Army fell away at the two furlong pole, it was Rossa Ryan and Ryan Moore who settled down to battle it out. The two pulled a mile clear of the field and as they came up to the line it was heads up heads down with the judge needing to be called in order to call the Amo Racing colt the winner.

TUNBRIDGE WELLS showed promise on debut when runner-up at Navan before going one better here last month at very short odds. The runner-up subsequently finished second in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and the full-brother to Blackbeard is expected to progress further, especially in first-time cheekpieces. Arizona Blaze was himself placed at Royal Ascot, finishing third in the Norfolk, and had previously won the Marble Hill over C&D His consistency to date is likely to stand him in good stead, while Principality was beaten by one who followed up under a penalty on his debut at Newmarket. He won decisively at Goodwood, from which the third has won subsequently, and he is of interest stepping up in grade
WIN: TUNBRIDGE WELLS
DANGER: Arizona Blaze
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore have been in the frame in 5 of the last 7 renewals of this race, but have only won it twice in that time. So while you can’t rule them out, maybe having something to beat them home in the Exacta is the way to go. Last year’s winning connections of Adrian Murray and Amo Racing are the men to follow as they clearly target this 2yo contest so pick ARIZONA BLAZE to beat TUNBRIDGE WELLS.

Seven-year-old COMMANCHE FALLS hasn’t won since last September but returned to form recently and reverts to this distance, over which all 12 of his wins have come. His biggest success was a Group 3 last July and, while well held at Haydock recently, the winner subsequently finished fourth in both of Royal Ascot’s Group 1 sprints. Dual course winner Ano Syra finished third in the course-and-distance Group 2 Greenlands Stakes last month. That was probably a career-best effort but she disappointed subsequently at Cork. Three-year-old My Mate Alfie has progressed well this year and is another to bear in mind.
WIN: COMMANCHE FALLS
DANGER: Ano Syra
The favourite has won five of the last seven runnings of this race and nothing has returned a Tote Win dividend bigger than €4.40 since its inception in 2015. That directs you to the top of the betting where you’ll find last year’s winner and English raider COMMANCHE FALLS He geared up for his defence of this when 2nd to Believing in the Listed Achilles Stakes at Haydock. Form that has been franked with the winner finishing 4th in a pair of G1’s at Royal Ascot.

Dubai Duty Free, now in its 41st year of operation, has grown into one of the biggest single travel retail operators in the world.
Now employing over 5,800 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow.
Dubai Duty Free is committed to promoting Dubai through a series of high level sporting events such as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary in February 2024 and was won by Jasmine Paolini and Ugo Humbert, respectively, who both claimed their maiden Dubai titles.
To date, Dubai Duty Free has received over 780 awards including its record tenth ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’ at the prestigious Frontier Awards held in Cannes last October 2021. In May 2023, Dubai Duty Free won its 23rd consecutive Business Traveller Middle East Award for “Best Duty Free Shopping in the Middle East”.
Much awareness is also created by the operation’s involvement in horse racing and Dubai Duty Free regularly flies the flag in the UK in April and September at the historical Newbury Racecourse.
The distinctive Dubai Duty Free branding is back at The Curragh Racecourse for the 17th running of the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on 30th June.
Since taking over the title sponsorship of this major European race, Dubai Duty Free has created a weekend Festival of racing and social activities, which include the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Golf Classic being held at the K Club in Kildare.
Meanwhile the world’s premier international jockey’s challenge, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, is held at Ascot in August and brings together top riders, male and female, from the world’s top racing nations representing Great Britain & Ireland, Rest of the World, Europe and The Ladies team.
Back in Ireland, Dubai Duty Free will return to the K Club as official partner for the Horizon Irish Open in September.
Other sports to benefit from Dubai Duty Free’s support include the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup and the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby 7’s to name a few.

STURLASSON’s initial juvenile form was quite smart and, while he subsequently dropped below that level, he has returned to his best in recent runs and finished second in Epsom’s three-year-old Dash earlier this month. He easily won a maiden last month and at Epsom he met trouble in-running before finishing well behind the winner, who subsequently finished second in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot. Lethal Nymph’s rating had fallen in recent times and, while well held in the Dash at Epsom, he ran well in a big-field handicap at Thirsk recently and should be competitive Kendall Roy is a thoroughly progressive three-year-old who won over C&D recently
WIN: STURLASSON

2024 marks the 17th year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby, the premier Classic in the Irish flat racing season. The new Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Wall of Fame located on the walkway to the Derby Bar on Level 1 of the Grandstand will be unveiled by Colm McLoughlin and Ramesh Cidambi at approx 12.20pm today.
2008
The first year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby yielded a familiar result, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Frozen Fire running out the 16/1 winner under Seamie Heffernan.
Fame And Glory went one better at the Curragh than at Epsom, winning cosily under Johnny Murtagh by a five length margin. Settled into mid-division, Fame And Glory stretched away a furlong from the finish to win comfortably.
2010
2009
A talented son of Galileo, Cape Blanco made it five in a row for Aidan O’Brien when seeing off stablemates Midas Touch and Jan Vermeer to run out a half length winner and land back to back renewals of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for Johnny Murtagh.
Treasure Beach was only beaten a head at Epsom but made amends at the Curragh, winning in the hands of Colm O’Donoghue.
He led home a Ballydoyle 1-2-3, with Seville and Memphis Tennessee rounding out the placings.
2012
2011
Camelot made it five races in a row and maintained his unbeaten record when winning as 1/5 favourite under Joseph O’Brien, marking a first Irish Derby for the rider.
He saw off four rivals to win cosily and maintain his reputation as a leading colt.
It was up to Jim Bolger to halt the period of Ballydoyle dominance, and Trading Leather did so in 2013.
A winner of the Silver Stakes on his previous win, he got the better of Galileo Rock, Festive Cheer and Ruler Of The World to win the 2013 renewal.
One of the best winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Australia was imperious and made it an Epsom-Curragh double when winning as 1/8 favourite under Joseph O’Brien. He made it another 1-2-3 for Ballydoyle, with Kingfisher and Orchestra in behind.
Behind Golden Horn at Epsom, Jack Hobbs showed his class to win the 2015 renewal of the race under William Buick for John Gosden and the Godolphin team. He became the first British-trained winner since Balanchine in 1994.
A fine winner under Pat Smullen, Harzand backed up his dominant Epsom victory by winning cosily to give Dermot Weld his first winner of the race since Grey Swallow in 2004, was also ridden to victory by Pat Smullen.
Capri showed grit and determination to turn round the form from Epsom and come out on top in a blanket finish under Seamie Heffernan. Delivered late, he beat Cracksman into second and Epsom winner Wings Of Eagles into third.
A first Classic winner for Joseph O’Brien as a trainer, and a first Irish Classic winner for brother Donnacha in the saddle, Latrobe improved from his course and distance maiden win to see off Rostropovich and the talented Saxon Warrior.
A surprise winner of the 2019 renewal, Sovereign was most impressive when making all under Padraig Beggy to see off Epsom winner Anthony Van Dyck and six other rivals by a wide six length margin. 2019
A comfortable winner at Royal Ascot, Santiago was backed up quickly and just held off the late surge of stablemate Tiger Moth to record another Classic winner for Seamie Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien.
Colin Keane gave Westover an uncomplicated ride when winning last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. Like Hurricane lane in 2021, he had been a strong finisher in the Epsom equivalent and ran home an impressive winner at the Curragh. In doing so, he made it back-to-back winners for Britain.
2023
Hurricane Lane ran a brilliant race at Epsom in defeat before taking victory in the 2021 classic. Frankie Dettori looked as though he may have stolen victory from the front, but Buick would not be denied and under an excellent drive ran Lone Eagle down in the shadows of the post.
Auguste Rodin joined an illustrious list of nineteen horses to do the English-Irish Derby double. Sent off 4/9, he obliged in a workman like performance to eventually reel in the pace setter Adelaide River. It was a professional performance that ended a recent string of British winners.
The Curragh has been delighted to work closely with Weir & Sons for the first time to create the magnificent Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby trophies which have been specially commissioned by Dubai Duty Free. We would particularly like to acknowledge Andrew Meehan - Goldsmith & Workshop Manager, David Mulreany - Master Hand Engraver and Nicola McDowell.
When designing this trophy, the team at Weir and Sons wanted to bring in multiple elements and inspirations to form a striking design which grabs your attention across a room. First and foremost, they wanted to make reference to the long heritage and linage of the event, secondly, they wanted to give the overall effect of a victory laurel wreath, and lastly wanted to tie in elements relating to the land itself and the coming together of cultures that makes the event possible.
The design starts with a circular silver dish featuring a golden horse’s head feeling that this would be nice subtle nod to the flow of the racecourse, the noble animals that make up the ‘sport of kings’, and then enclose them in a decorated halo In researching ancient depictions of victory laurels, it is often shown bound in a ribbon, especially in engraving and sculpture, which produced the idea to include a double helix of ribbons to mimic the shape of DNA strands as reference to the genetic heritage, breeding, and lineage of the horses. This idea is further emphasised by having the names of the past winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on the ribbons. Anchored at the top, with a full complement of hallmarks from the Dublin Assay Office, established in 1637, the names of past winners flow around the trophy clockwise, bringing us through a brief glimpse of the long history of the sport, with the final space left black to be completed on the day by adding the name of the victor in prime position beside of the title of the race.
While the ribbon pattern is mirrored left to right to give it an uplifting visual, echoing a victory wreath held aloft, the scrollwork contained inside the ribbons is a continuous pattern flowing in a circle around the dish reaching back through time echoing the long heritage, linage, and age of the race The scrollwork itself is a mixture of old European styles with Arabic influences representing the coming together of cultures and histories from around the world to form a larger pattern of beauty and celebration.
The victory wreath is frequently depicted as being held at the bottom by Victoria, the roman goddess of victory, so the winning owner’s name placed there to represent them victoriously holding the wreath while the rest of the pattern reaches upwards to the title of Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby in the highest position. The shield shape presenting the winning owner’s name was chosen to be akin to the shields used on a coat of arms, thus referencing pride in name, victory in battle, and prestigious title The goddess of victory is depicted as having wings, so stylised wings were added to the sides of the shield. The crown of leaves at the top of the shield are stylised birch leaves. The birch is native to Ireland and in Celtic lore it is long associated with purity, and medieval herbalists associated Birch with Venus, who is also associated with victory as well as prosperity and beauty. These attributes would be perfect to represent how the event is not only tied to the history of the land but also long associated with victory and prosperity.
And finally, the scroll placed at the top of the piece featuring the title Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby was chosen to echo a royal edict, with embellished edges and the logo placed at the top of the scroll in the same manner that a royal coat of arms appears at the top of royal scrolls and papers. The careful linework on the letters will catch the light as the viewer passes by making them look like they are lit from within.
Once the design was finalised, a transfer was placed onto the flat outer edges of the dish. The pattern was then carefully scribed on to the flat silver with a sharp point and any corrections or additional details were added free hand. Then the engraving could begin.
The engraving and carving process took many weeks of hard work, concentration, and dedication.
It’s worth noting that everything on the trophy was engraved by hand. No engraving machines or lasers were used at any point during the entire engraving process.

Irish 1,000 Guineas sixth AZADA can make the most of this easier opportunity The Dermot Weld-trained filly, who was making the first start of her three-year-old career, is entitled to have come on from that seasonal reappearance Given connections’ decision to pitch her into a Classic on just her second start, the Aga Khan-owned daughter of Siyouni is clearly held in some regard. Joseph O’Brien’s Atlantic Coast filled the same position in the 2,000 Guineas here but has yet to recapture his juvenile form. A very smart two-year-old, there is still time for the colt to deliver on that promise Dundalk winner Mundi was well beaten here last time but the fact Ryan Moore remains loyal is surely significant.

2024 will mark the 159th running of the Irish Derby. This is the 17th year of sponsorship of Ireland’s flagship race by Dubai Duty Free.
The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third. There were only three runners. Back then, the Irish Derby was run on the second day of a four-day meeting and Selim won on each day. He had a walk-over on the first day, the day after the Irish Derby he again beat Tom King in the three-mile Queen’s Plate and on the final day he won over four miles. Selim was bred by Dublin sports writer D. Kinsella and was owned by Englishman James Cockin who was based at Hednesford in Staffordshire and made frequent raids on Irish races.
In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-andthree-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.
The Irish Derby has never been won by a horse representing a female trainer. The Jessica Harrington-trained Sprewell was the latest one to attempt to break the hoodoo in the 2023 renewal.
British runners have traditionally enjoyed much success in the race (23 wins in the last 51 years), and enjoyed success in last years race with Westover. Hurricane Lane in 2021 and Jack Hobbs in 2015 are other recent British trained winners.
The biggest ever British raiding party was in 1996 when a nine-strong British team came up short behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zagreb.
The last maiden to win the Irish Derby was Sindon in 1958, trained by Michael Dawson in Ireland and ridden by Liam Ward.
Pardal, third in 1950, was the first French runner in the race. He was owned by Marcel Boussac and ridden by Rae Johnstone. French-trained horses have won the Irish Derby eight times in all including four victories in the last 29 years, namely; Hurricane Run in 2005, his sire Montjeu in 1999, Dream Well in 1998 and Winged Love in 1995. Malacate (1976), Irish Ball (1971), Prince Regent (1969) and Tambourine (1962) were the others.
The fastest winning time in the Derby was registered by St Jovite in 1992 when Jim Bolger’s brilliant colt came home in a time of 2 min 25.6 sec, which smashed the previous record of 2 min 28.8 sec set by Tambourine II in 1962.
The smallest ever field was in 1868 when Madeira defeated his sole rival, Bee Quick, by six lengths. Madeira only ran twice after his Irish Derby win where he was beaten on successive days at Bellewstown!
1962 witnessed the biggest ever turnout for the race as Tambourine II saw off 23 rivals to become the first ever French-trained winner of the race.
2012 and 2014 saw the joint smallest fields since 1912, with just four rivals taking their chances against the Derby heroes Camelot and Australia respectively.
Only twice has the result of the Irish Derby come down to a dead heat and on both occasions the horses involved have been English-trained raiders. Haine and Zodiac shared the honours in 1924, while 10 years later Patriot King and Primero were inseparable passing the post.
Morny Wing is the most successful jockey in the Irish Derby, recording six victories between 1921 and 1946. Steve Donoghue and Lester Piggott both won five. Seamus Heffernan is the most successful current licenced jockey with four wins in the race. Ryan Moore registered his first win last year.
The 2016 victory of Harzand saw the Aga Khan overtake his grandfather His Highness the Aga Khan III as the most successful individual owner in the history of the race with what was his sixth success. The latter had his colours carried to victory five times between 1925 and 1949, while Shergar gave the present Aga Khan his first success in 1981 and was followed by Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988), Sinndar (2000), Alamshar (2003) and the aforementioned Harzand (2016).
Mind, that title could well be disputed as various combinations of the Coolmore partners, namely John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have owned 16 winners of the race in the last 27 years. Indeed, all bar three of the last seven winners have been owned by the Coolmore partners.
The last siblings to win the race were Ribocco in 1967 and his full-brother Ribero in 1968. Both horses were trained in England by Fulke Johnson-Houghton, ridden by Lester Piggott and owned by Charles Engelhard.
Cape Blanco was the last horse to be beaten in the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club) before winning the Irish Derby in 2010. He is not alone in showing improved form here at the Curragh as five years earlier, Hurricane Run finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club before triumphing in the Irish Derby as favourite. In 1995, Winged Love improved from his third place at Chantilly to capture Ireland’s premier Classic.
* N.B The distance of the Prix du Jockey Club was shortened from 12 furlongs to 10½ furlongs in 2005.
Another jointly held title, the accolade of the most successful sire in the race is held by Gallinule, Sadler’s Wells and the perennial Galileo – three giants of their time. Gallinule produced six winners between 1895 and 1901, while Sadler’s Wells got off the mark with Old Vic in 1989. The following year his daughter Salsabil won before Dream Well in 1998, Montjeu in 1999, Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral in 2002. Sovereign’s 2019 win saw Galileo join Gallinule and Sadler’s Wells as the leading sire of the race with six winners.
In 1907, Orby was the first horse to attempt the English-Irish Derby double and he duly obliged, with his starting price of 1/10 making him the shortest ever priced winner of the Classic. The shortest priced horse in the race since then was Australia at 1/8 in the 2014 renewal.
Zarathustra is the longest-priced winner, prevailing at 50/1 in 1954. Ridden by Paddy Powell and trained by Michael Hurley, he had finished fifth in the Irish 2000 GuineasbuthadrunbadlyintheGallinuleStakesonhis previous start.
Sovereign in 2019 joined Frozen Fire in 2008 and Soldier of Fortune in 2007 to finished unplaced at Epsom before triumphing in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Sovereign was tenth, while Soldier of Fortune was fifth at Epsom and Frozen Fire was only 11th. 2017 winner Capri finished 6th at Epsom before winning at the Curragh. Previous to that duo, the last horse to win the Irish Derby after having been unplaced at Epsom was Tyrnavos (12th at Epsom) who caused a 25/1 shock on soft ground in 1980.
Others who were placed at Epsom before triumphing at the Curragh recently were 2022 winner Westover (third at Epsom), Hurricane Lane (third at Epsom), Jack Hobbs (second at Epsom) in 2015, Treasure Beach (second at Epsom) in 2011, Fame and Glory (second at Epsom) in 2009, Dylan Thomas (third at Epsom) in 2006, Alamshar (third at Epsom) in 2003, St Jovite (second at Epsom) in 1992, Sir Harry Lewis (fourth at Epsom) in 1987, Law Society (second at Epsom) in 1985 and the great El Gran Senor (second at Epsom) in 1984.
St Jovite’s win was unusual in that he turned the tables on his Epsom conqueror Dr Devious, finishing two lengths second to him at Epsom prior to inflicting a 12-length defeat on him at the Curragh.
Only 10 fillies’ have won the race since it’s inception and the first of these came in 1871. Maid Of Athens won only the sixth race since it’s inception and the following year Trickstress made it two from two for the fillies. Gallinaria made it winner number eight but the next filly to win didn’t come until 1990 in the form of Salsabil She was quickly followed by Balanchine in 1994.

WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE WINNERS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY INTO ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS RACES IN THE WORLD
The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third.
In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-three-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.
Vincent O’Brien won the Irish Derby on seven occasions during his career and perhaps the most iconic of those victories was that of Nijinsky in 1970 The son of Northern Dancer arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby as the unbeaten winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby and he didn’t disappoint. Nijinsky would go on to even greater fame in the months after that, completing the fabled Triple Crown by winning the St Leger at Doncaster. To this day, no other horse has completed the Triple Crown.
Having won the Derby by no less than 10 lengths in 1981, he arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby on a wave of expectation. With Lester Piggott taking over the reins from Walter Swinburn, the son of Great Nephew made no mistake, prevailing by a very easy four lengths. After his racing career finished later that year, Shergar returned to The Curragh to stand as a sire in Ballymany Stud.
Such was the regard he was held in by Irish racing people, he was paraded down the main street in Newbridge in scenes unlikely to ever be repeated.
Prior to the 1990 renewal of the Irish Derby, 90 years had passed since Gallinaria won the race in 1900
In 1994 Balanchie beat King’s Theatre to make it two wins in four years after a 90-year drought. Since then, only three other fillies’ have contested the race, Qualify, who like last year’s runner Tuesday, won the Espsom Oaks on her previous start. She finished sixth to Jack Hobbs in 2015. The other was the William Mott trained New York Girl, she finished seventh in 2020
There have been few more spectacular winners than St Jovite in 1991. While the son of Pleasant Colony had finished second to Dr Devious in the Derby earlier that month, the rematch at the Curragh was no contest at all, with St Jovite powering away from his rival to score by a remarkable 12 lengths.
It wasn’t just a visually impressive performance either, as he came home in a time of 2 minutes 25.6 seconds, which smashed the previous race record of 2 minutes 28.8 seconds set by Tambourine II in 1962. It is a record that stands to this day
Arguably the best of Aidan O’Brien’s fifteen winners of the Irish Derby is Galileo, who won by four lengths in 2001. The son of Sadler’s Wells followed his Epsom success with another smooth victory in the hands of Mick Kinane before completing a notable treble when landing the King George at Ascot. He has since become the greatest stallion of his generation, to date siring six winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

After bouncing back from a disappointing run intheEnglishGuineastowintheEpsomDerby, all eyes were once again on the son of Deep Impact to become the nineteenth horse to do the double. Ryan Moore anchored him in third in the early stages, with stable companions Adelaide River and Covent Garden making out the early running At the top of the track , Auguste Rodin looked to have the race at his mercy but Adelaide River made sure he had to be at his best, with the pair neck and neck down most of the straight. Eventually his class prevailed to do the infamous double.

Epsom Derby runner-up AMBIENTE FRIENDLY can land the Irish equivalent for trainer James Fanshawe Winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial on his penultimate start, the son of Gleneagles has upwards of 5lb in hand on official ratings. His main threat may come from Los Angeles, a place behind in the Epsom Classic. Aidan O’Brien’s first string lost his unbeaten record on that occasion but should be better suited to the Curragh. Ryan Moore is sure to have Ambiente Friendly in his sights throughout. Although unable to get competitive at the business end of the French Derby, Sunway didn’t get the clearest of passages. Oisin Murphy will be hoping for better luck here WIN: AMBIENTE FRIENDLY

In 1994, when Paul Newman was working with the Irish Government to secure the lease on the Barretstown Estate, there was a formal signing ceremony organised with Paul, Sir Anthony O’Reilly and Albert Reynolds in Barretstown on the weekend of the Irish Derby As it turned out, the actual lease paperwork was not ready for the ceremony and had still to be signed by Paul before he left. He was attending the Derby the following day and the official papers were brought to the Curragh and the actual signing took place on Irish Derby Day in 1994.

The Paul Flynn-trained CHEERS AGAIN can open his account on turf. A three-time winner at Dundalk, the five-year-old was somewhat unlucky in running when third over this course and distance last time Short of room on the rail over two furlongs out, the gelding finished strongly once the gaps appeared. State Actor, the winner of that race, gives the impression of having plenty more to offer The lightly-raced four-year-old quickened up smartly to score and has scope off 9lb higher Colin Keane looks a significant booking. Coeur d’Or makes a quick reappearance having performed really well at Royal Ascot and is also noted.
WIN: CHEERS AGAIN
DANGER: State Actor
The Trifecta is the way to play this one with a dividend of €3,084.60 last year versus €1,275.23 on the tricast. Recent C&D winner STATE ACTOR is a good place to start as he won with a bit up his sleeve last time and can go close again, while the Harry Redknapp-owned BENAVENTE was a fast finisher when hands and heels last time and will be tuned up for today. Finish your perm with the in-form CHEERS AGAIN and the consistent CASANOVA

The Dermot Weld-trained KAYHANA can step up on her reappearance second at this venue Having her first start since last September, the Aga Khan-owned filly only weakened late on over a mile and dropping back a furlong should be very much in her favour here Naas winner Plume Noire had a bit in hand on that occasion so might still be fairly treated off a revised mark. The fact that James Ryan can take 5lb off is worth its weight in gold in a race of this nature Dagoda seems to reserve her best for the Curragh, so the Jennifer Lynch-trained mare has to be a contender under Oisin Murphy

Last year’s runner-up ZOFFMAN was unable to get to Safecracker on that occasion but holds every chance at these revised weights. Fresh from a close second in the Cork Derby earlier this month, the five-year-old should go close under Colin Keane. The aforementioned Safecracker carried a big weight to victory in 2023, so the fact he has topweight is less of a concern. Johnny Murtagh’s gelding seldom runs a bad race at this track. Having won twice over hurdles recently, Joseph O’Brien’s lightly-raced Intellotto could be open to further improvement on the Flat this season.
WIN: ZOFFMAN
DANGER: Safecracker
