The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A FESTIVAL OF LIVE MUSIC
Racegoers will be met with live performances from Newbridge Gospel Choir and Manila Strings as they enter the track. Trad rock band Rake The Ashes will headline Saturday evening’s entertainment in the Derby Village Marquee from 17:30. While throughout the day you will find DJ Lance West pumping out the best tunes in Derby Village, Ramblin’ Rovers rocking in Lilywhites Lounge, Manila Strings roaming the grounds with their infectious energy and the Artane Band performing between races from the Grandstand.

CURRAGH COMMENT
JAN BRUEGHEL won impressively on his debut over today’s C&D last month, is a well-bred brother to Irish Derby winner Sovereign and has many big-race entries. The form of that maiden success is far from outstanding and he started a largely unsupported 7/2 shot, but won in the manner of a potentially high-class type and should progress with racing. Bolster has progressed very well in handicaps recently and while he is the top adjusted-rated runner, he was previously well beaten in his sole stakes start. Wendla defeated the subsequent Irish 1,000 Guineas fourth to win a Group 3 last month and faces a slightly stiffer task today, as she also steps up to this distance for the first time

Jamie Spencer opted to deploy his usual tactics, riding her cold at the back of the field with just one rival behind him for the majority of the contest. BLUESTOCKING finished second in last year’s Irish Oaks and won well on her seasonal reappearance Frustrating to follow last year, she nonetheless produced many fine efforts in defeat, is dependable, suited by conditions and seemed better than ever at York. Emily Upjohn is top-class on her day and was unfortunate not to have won the 2022 Oaks at Epsom. A keen-goer, she won the Coronation Cup last June but her latest runs have been disappointing. She is the top adjusted-rated runner but needs to reproduce her best. Stay Alert was flattered to beat subsequent Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Running Lion so well at Newmarket recently, as the runner-up hung left, but finished second in this race last year

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority

BIALYSTOK hasn’t run on the Flat for 1019 days but is a 140-rated hurdler who has shown pace over jumps. His champion trainer is seeking a first win in this race and while the selection hasn’t run since falling at the Punchestown Festival, he had smart French Flat form some years ago and, being still just a six-year-old, should compete from his 92 rating. Scholarship is capable at this level and while well held on two recent course visits, the winner of both races subsequently won the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot. Good Heavens notably finished second in the 2022 Irish Cambridgeshire but is long absent and, under top-weight, might prove best watched for now
