It has been a memorable year here at the Curragh with some wonderful racing performances and good crowds – many thanks to all racegoers for your support. We are already looking forward to 18th March 2024 when we will start up the new flat season. Group 1 winners such as Paddington, Tahiyra, Auguste Rodin, Savethelastdance, Eldar Eladarov, Bucanero Fuerte, Henry Longfellow, Fallen Angel, City of Troy, Ylang Ylang, Warm Heart, Moss Tucker, Highfield Princess and Bradsell all thrilled us at the Curragh this year and we are looking forward to more of the same next year. Today we also crown the 2023 Irish Flat racing champions, and we salute Mrs. Sue Magnier, Aidan O’Brien, Colin Keane and Jamie Powell on their respective awards. Horse Racing Ireland Flat Championship Awards Presentations will take place following the presentation of the 5th race in the parade ring.

COLIN KEANE CHAMPION JOCKEY

Colin Keane comfortably retains the title of champion jockey, gaining a stranglehold on the championship in late August and powering home for his fourth successive title and his ﬁfth in all. Keane shared Group 2 success with Ger Lyons as Zarinsk won the Romanised Minstrel Stakes at Leopardstown in July having won a Group 3 with same horse on two occasions earlier in the season. Keane also rode Group 3 winners for trainers Aidan O’Brien, Michael O’Callaghan, Willie Mullins, Henry de Bromhead and Noel Meade and partnered the Richard Fahey-trained Native American to win the valuable Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale Stakes at the Curragh at Irish Champions Festival in September. Colin rode some special winners for his dad Gerry during the season and among them were Laughifuwant at the Galway festival and the Wear A Pink Ribbon Syndicate-owned Crystal Black in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF ‘Northﬁelds’ Handicap, another at the Curragh at Irish Champions Festival.

JAMIE POWELL CHAMPION APPRENTICE JOCKEY On Friday 24th March, John Ingles submitted a piece for Sporting Life and highlighted Jamie Powell as one of two Irish Jockeys to follow for the 2023 ﬂat season, he wasn’t wrong. A local to the Curragh Racecourse, and with racing in his blood, it wasn’t until his late teens when Jamie ﬁrst sat on a thoroughbred. Jamie always had the pedigree to be a successful jockey as his father, Anthony, won the 1989 Irish Grand National on Maid of Money, while his grandfather Peadar Matthews won both the Irish St Leger the Irish 2000 Guineas in the 1960s for Paddy Prendergast. Once Jamie discovered his passion for racing, he joined and graduated from RACE ‘s Trainee Jockey Course in Kildare Town and hasn’t looked back since. The highlight of Jamie’s season was his success on the Fozzy Stack-trained Aussie Girl in the Dubai Duty Free Summer Fillies Handicap at the Curragh on Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby weekend. Powell also captured the valuable Irish Stallion Farms EBF ‘Habitat’ Handicap on James McAuley’s Tawaazon at his local racecourse on Tattersalls Irish Guineas weekend and struck up a rewarding partnership with the Mick Mulvany-trained Fratas, winning races at the Galway festival, Leopardstown and Tramore.

MRS SUE MAGNIER CHAMPION OWNER Mrs Sue Magnier is Ireland’s champion owner once again. Her racing colours are iconic and known the world over and this year, her involvement with equine stars such as Augustin Rodin, Savethelastdance, Paddington and Luxembourg helped her to become Ireland’s Champion Owner for the 22nd time.

AIDAN O’BRIEN CHAMPION TRAINER For the 26th time, Aidan O’Brien is Ireland’s champion trainer. A multiple Group 1 winner once again, Aidan won at the highest level in Ireland with Auguste Rodin taking both the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby and the Kingdom Of Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes. Paddington won the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas while also at the Curragh, Savethelastdance won the Juddmonte Irish Oaks, Luxembourg captured the Tattersalls Gold Cup with the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes going the way of Henry Longfellow.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). Adrian Murray registered his first Group 1 win in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes as Bucanero Fuerte destroyed his competition, winning by an impressive four lengths. Although this was no surprise after his debut at the Curragh where he won comfortably by 2 ¾ lengths. Launch took the early lead in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes on the near side group, with Porta Fortuna chasing. Kevin Scott raced in second place on the far side group, slightly wandering around and ending up in the centre of track. This pace allowed him to fire clear of the field with ease to score by four lengths. Porta Fortuna and Givemethebeatboys were no match for the winner.

Daniel Tudhope hit a new landmark when winning the Moyglare Stud Stakes aboard the Karl Burke-trained Fallen Angel. Carrying the Clipper Logistics colours, Tudhope’s perfectly timed ride proved to be one of the highlights of the Irish Champions Festival. Verpertilio made her challenge in the final furlong, having met trouble in the beginning of the race, but Fallen Angel proved too strong in the finish after a reminder from Tudhope and she stuck to her task gamely. She confirmed the good impression made in winning the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket to advance her claims for next season’s 1,000 Guineas.

Henry Longfellow’s win in the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes added to his perfect tally as he completed his hat-trick on the second day of Irish Champions Festival to remain unbeaten. He produced a flawless display in the hands of Ryan Moore to win by five lengths. After getting a nice stalking position in third and making smooth headway to lead two furlongs out, the son of Dubawi proved too strong for the field of four that went to post, albeit having a bit to find on official ratings with market rival Bucanero Fuerte. He more than doubled his superiority over Islandsinthestream from the Group 2 Futurity Stakes and still seems to be improving rapidly.

There was little surprise to see the King Power connections send Art Power back to Ireland to conquer yet another Group 2 sprint for the season. This time with David Allan in the saddle, he broke well from the stalls again but the other riders in the race were keen not to let him get a free lead. However, dropping down to the minimum distance seemed to make no difference, as he powered away from the pack and hit the line hard to make it 4-4 here. This was arguably the best performance of his career, before making use of the soft ground to land the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot at 40/1.

He was given a perfectly timed ride to challenge Get Ahead and Equality in the closing stages to have a flourish of speed, which enabled him to win by half a length. CURRAGH COMMENT On ratings, this looks a great opportunity for four-time course scorer BIG GOSSEY to regain the winning thread. The only chink in the six-year-old’s armour is the fact that he has yet to triumph over 7f. Nevertheless, he looks the one to beat, with last-time-out maiden winner Yosemite Valley feared most. The Shamardal colt is heading in the right direction and will appreciate the extra furlong, while Real Force should appreciate the step up in distance too.

After her narrow defeat in the British version of this race, Tahiyra went one better to land the Irish equivalent, giving trainer Dermot Weld success in this race for the second year in a row. Tahiyra got a nice position tracking Mediate, before eventually pushing for the lead after a brief challenge. The Siyouni offspring went clear inside the ﬁnal 110 yards and wasn’t for catching, under a positive ride from Chris Hayes. This classy type got the better of Meditate, as she did in the Moyglare Stud Stakes the previous year. Tahiyra went on to back this success up in the Coronation Stakes at Ascot and Coolmore Stud Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. She has now been retired but will be remembered as a generational ﬁlly.

Via Sistina backed up her win in the Dahlia stakes at Newmarket, with a handy victory here by two lengths, and the outsider Stay Alert following in second. Via Sistina didn’t have a straightforward start and there was plenty of question marks about her position. This worked to her benefit, however, after she was kept wide during a scrappy moment in the closing stages. In true Jamie Spencer style, she flew from last to first with a flourish while Stay Alert had to take a check as the leaders weakened towards the finish. After missing out in the English Oaks, Savethelastdance came here with something to prove and went one better to land the Irish equivalent in special fashion. With two furlongs to go, it appeared that the winner would be Library, who was clear at the front of affairs. However, those coming through the weakening horses were the stars of the show and Bluestocking made the first move, while Savethelastdance had to be switched wide around her and other weakening horses. She rallied inside the final furlong to challenge the lead of Bluestocking and ultimately proved the class act of the field. The ride was a fabulous bit of horsemanship by Ryan Moore.

On the opening day of our 2023 season, we were not only treated to the Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire, but also the Park Express Stakes. The first Group race of our season saw the hot-favourite Insinuendo defy her short price in the mud. The six-year-old was keen enough throughout and saw plenty of daylight from the widest draw but eventually made headway to get the better of Redressed, albeit hanging right towards the finish. She put her experience to the fore and went one better than last year when finishing behind the 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth.

Paddington continued his dominant start to the season by producing an impressive display when landing the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas. This gave Aidan O’Brien his twelfth win in this historic race as he landed the ﬁrst Classic of the season once again. After a less than smooth start, he still had the capabilities to run away with the race, leaving second placed Cairo and third placed Hi Royal in his trail. His impressive tally now also includes a win in the St James’s Palace Stakes, Coral-Eclipse and Qatar Sussex Stakes. He has been the best miler this season.

Although a race for fillies and mares only, it feels unacceptable not to include the breath-taking performance of Just Beautiful in the Mile category. The five-time winner in Britain was held in high regards before being purchased by Moyglare Stud at the sales for 625,000gns and showed her quality for Paddy Twomey here. Gaining a soft lead out front, the mare was good enough to take full advantage from the front under a well-timed ride from Billy Lee and kicked clear by over two lengths. She clearly still has more to give as well, finishing just two lengths behind Tahiyra, giving away 5lb, in the Marton Stakes at Leopardstown during the Irish Champions Festival.

Kicking on from his Listed victory at Naas in March, the Joseph O’Brien-trained Visualisation remained unfancied here, albeit going close behind Point Lonsdale in the Tote Alleged Stakes. Declan McDonogh was keen to get his front-running tactics back into the game plan and was allowed an uncontested lead and arguably won a stronger race on paper than when third in this race last year. He conﬁrmed his love for soft/heavy ground, which possibly aided his cause on the day, to win a shade cosily by one and a half lengths. Layfayette came with a late charge from the back of the sevenstrong ﬁeld to pick up second.

Ryan Moore hit another landmark as he got Luxembourg back to winning ways in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, giving Moore his third victory in this race. He went from pillar to post and made all to dictate the pace for the entire race. Initially it seemed he wouldn’t be able to keep the lead as Piz Badile battled him early, however, he showed his class to power away towards the ﬁnish and keep the well-fancied Bay Bridge back in second. Subsequently hitting the frame in both the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and the Royal Bahrain Irish Champions Stakes, he is now one of Aidan’s powerhouses in his stable and is held in extremely high regard.

The well-known combination of Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore secured victory in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, after Auguste Rodin defeated stablemates Adelaide River and Covent Garden into second and third, respectively. It was Auguste Rodin’s race to lose being such a short-price and after turning into the home straight, he and Adelaide River went clear of the rest of the ﬁeld. He travelled smoothly and from two furlongs out and Adelaide River was no match for him which secured Aidan O’Brien his fourteenth Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

CURRAGH COMMENT HANS ANDERSEN remains unexposed and the son of Frankel was an impressive winner of the 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown in the spring. It would be no surprise if he were to prove a cut above Listed level on his return from a break. Proven mud-lover Helvic Dream remains well up to this level and, buoyed by a recent C&D win, is likely to throw down a strong challenge, while Feathertop is one to consider from an each-way perspective.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if an injury occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
