I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the first of three race meetings to be held here in October.

We are very grateful to today’s race sponsorsthe Irish European Breeders Fund, the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, Ms Kirsten Rausing of Staffordstown Stud, Darley, the Quirke Family and QuinnBet. Your support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh. Today we also commemorate a pioneer of training and education in the industry, the late Derek O’Sullivan, while after the last race we are delighted to welcome eight pony club members who will take part in an exhibition ride.

I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support.

We have made some changes to our offering which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our new café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities throughout the enclosures. To view racing, free seating is available throughout the front of the stand.

Finally, we would like to wish Andy Farell and the Irish rugby team all the very best in their big World Cup match against Scotland tonight.

We race here again at the Curragh on Thursday next October 12th featuring the Equine MediRecord Student Derby and we look forward to welcoming you back here then and for our remaining two meetings of the 2023 flat season.

Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Solar Saving sets a clear standard of those with race experience following his third at Navan on Wednesday. That said, preference is for ILLINOIS, who is a half-brother to the five-time Group 1 winner Danedream and he is also a full-brother to the Group 3 scorers Venice Beach and Broadway. Invention is another well-bred newcomer who merits plenty of respect on his racecourse bow, while Mont St Michel and Tour Of Duty complete the shortlist.

KITTY ROSE has made a very impressive start to her career and she arrives here seeking to add to her record of two wins from two starts. Natalia Lupini’s charge shed her maiden tag over 7f at Naas before scoring in Listed company over the extended 7f at Leopardstown, and she appears primed to give another good account. CURRAGH COMMENT

There is a lot to like about the chance held by Whatcouldhavebeen as she reverts to the level for the first time since winning at Galway off 8lb lower last October. Her strong hurdles form only boosts her profile. However, PACHMENA has been placed over C&D twice before now and, given she has been given a live chance by the handicapper, this could be her day to shine. Let Her Loose, Narlita and Plains Indian are also considered.

This can go the way of FOUR BLONDES, who wasn’t beaten far at Naas last month. Her third-placed finish on debut behind the talented Cherry Blossom appeals as strong form as well, and she is preferred to Slaney Swagger, who must be of interest dropping in trip after a decent debut effort over a mile here recently. BRIGID’SPASTURESSTAKES

We are delighted to stage the second running of the Brigid’s Pastures Stakes today which will be sponsored by Darley for the first time.

The race name celebrates the life of St Brigid, as part of the build up to “Brigid 1500” in 2024, acknowledging her close association with almost every corner of County Kildare, from the town of Kildare itself, where the fire of Brigid still burns, to the plains of the Curragh, also known as Brigid’s Pastures, where it is said she laid out her cloak.

Hewn from the earth by Ice-Age glaciers, the Curragh was once the training ground of the mighty Fianna who were based at the Hill of Allen. In the time of Brigid the land became part of her convent at Kildare. In return for a small miracle, the King of Leinster granted St. Brigid land for her church – all the land her cloak would cover. The Saint extended her cloak to lay claim to the entire mighty plain of the Liffey and the Curragh became known as Brigid’s Pastures

St. Brigid, with Patrick and Columcille, was one of the three most important Irish saints. She died in 524 AD and in honour of the

1500 year anniversary which takes place next year, the Curragh Racecourse is delighted to name a race to commemorate her legacy.

CURRAGH COMMENT

PINAFORE bounced back to winning ways at Nottingham on her latest start when delivering a career-best effort. That was also the first time she had encountered soft ground and there is every chance the daughter of Dark Angel may find another chunk of improvement. Aussie Girl continues to be in fine form and enters the reckoning once again following her recent fourth at Ayr. Bells On Her Toes and My Eyes Adore You appeal most of the remainder.

LANWADES THEQUIRKE FAMILY

STEPHENQUIRKE 1932–2001

Stephen was a member of the well-known Quirke racing family based on the Curragh. His father Martin, himself a former Champion jockey, trained at Mountjoy Lodge from 1940 and having studied veterinary at UCD he took over the licence from his father in 1962.

Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s he sent out hundreds of winners from the yard many at the highest level including classics in two 2,000 Guineas (Atherstone Wood and Mistigo) and a St Leger (Parnell). He trained the super fillies Noble Mark to win a ‘1,500’ at Phoenix Park (now the Phoenix Stakes) and Phils Fancy to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. He had a band of loyal owners from all over the world who relied on his expertise, acumen and sheer pleasure in the sport. He employed a faithful cohort of staff many of whom were with him for years.

Stephen was one of the founder members of the Racing Academy and Centre of Excellence as he recognized the responsibility of trainers and racing yards for young people seeking to make a career in the racing industry.

He left the training ranks and joined the Turf Club as a Stipendiary Steward and then filled the role of Senior Starter before he retired in 1998. Stephen was highly regarded by his owners, his staff and colleagues and muchloved by his family and friends.

CURRAGH COMMENT

POP STAR could be the one for leading connections. Aidan O’Brien’s unexposed three-year-old left a lasting impression when getting off the mark at the third attempt in first-time blinkers on his Navan return, and a mark of 82 could really underestimate this son of Sioux Nation on his handicap debut. Harry’s Hill is 2-6 over C&D and must be taken seriously, while Petit Calvados brings decent French form to the table and Mymomentintime is expected to go well from the foot of the weights.

DEREKO’SULLIVAN ANAPPRECIATION

This afternoon’s apprentice race is run in memory of Derek O’Sullivan, founding Director of RACE from 1973 until his untimely passing in 2002 and it represents a fitting tribute to a man who devoted so much time and energy to the training and development of young people in the horse racing industry.

Originally from Dublin, Derek served his time as an electrician and worked his way through college, completing a social science degree before first meeting Stan Cosgrove in 1971 and accepting the challenge of setting up a school for apprentice jockeys as a form of social project. RACE opened its doors in September 1973 and for the first few years Curragh House was a hostel for a small number of young apprentices, offering lodgings, educational and social supports. The original Trustees/ Committee included Stan Cosgrove, Joe McGrath (Turf Club Senior Steward), Michael Osborne (Irish National Stud), Tom Ryan, Tom Casey, Jim Marsh (stipendiary steward of the Turf Club) and Tom Brophy (local auctioneer in Newbridge).

From such small acorns do giant oaks grow and the fledgling apprentice centre has evolved over more than 40 years into a broad-based academy offering professional training for jockeys, stable staff, trainers, breeders and farriers with a campus and facilities that are the envy of the racing world. Great appreciation is due to the Army Equitation School in the Curragh Camp who provided practical training facilities and support during all those formative years and to FÄS who structured and funded the initial training programmes from 1978 and to Horse Racing Ireland and Kildare Wicklow ETB who still support the Trainee Jockey programme.

Derek had a vision for RACE that extended far beyond Kildare town and his pioneering work led to an enduring friendship with Japan and the setting up of a training school in Hokkaido for the Japan Racing Association (JRA). Ireland was put on the map as a centre of excellence for training racing staff and riders from around the globe and Derek was one of the founders of the European Association of Racing Schools (EARS).

Derek always envisaged that RACE would be a catalyst for change in the Irish racing industry and he fought passionately for more investment in the professional training and education of young people and the welfare of stable staff. He understood that the all-round development of the person is what creates the foundation for a successful career and a fruitful life and his legacy is evident in the hundreds of RACE graduates who have made their mark in Ireland and around the world.

CURRAGH COMMENT

LOINGSEOIR would appear to have been teed up for this again having won the previous two renewals, the latest off 7lb lower. His recent course fourth would suggest he is more than capable of competing from his current mark, though, and he is fancied to complete the hat-trick. Rampage is 7lb better off with his Bellewstown conqueror Mogwli and it would be no surprise were he to reverse that form. Others to note include Lady Arwen, Hokusai and Speckled Meadow.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

MAGICAL VISION excels when the mud is flying so the more rain the better. The lightly-raced six-year-old has enjoyed a summer break since failing in her bid for the four-timer over C&D back in April and she is back down to a nice mark. The ex-French Universally is settling into Irish life nicely and deserved his breakthrough success at Fairyhouse. He is up 8lb, which is 1lb less than the hike Run Forrest Run got for his comprehensive Cork victory. Transcendental and Sounds Of Spring are a couple more to consider.

WIN: MAGICAL VISION

DANGER: Universally
