Europe’s Richest 2YO Race

WELCOME TO 23 SEPTEMBER 2023
€4

Welcome to Million Day

It is with great pride that I welcome you to The Curragh for the Goffs Million, the richest two-yearold race in Europe, with a guaranteed minimum prize fund of €1,000,000 exclusive to horses purchased at last year’s Goffs Orby Sale. It promises to be a day of superb racing alongside live music, family fun and the first High Spirits & Food Festival showcasing the best of Irish food and drink.

The Goffs Million really caught the imagination of Orby buyers over the past two years, and to further broaden the appeal we were delighted to announce earlier this year that it will evolve into the Goffs Two Million Series for 2024 Over 1000 beautifully bred yearlings will go under the hammer at Goffs next week at Orby Book 1 and Orby Book 2 and every one of them will be eligible to compete for a guaranteed minimum of €2,000,000 prize money next season.

GOFFS TWO MILLION SERIES COMPRISES:

1. The Goffs Million worth €1,000,000 and run over 7 furlongs at The Curragh on 28 September 2024 – once again it will be Europe’s Richest Two-Year-Old race

2. The Goffs 500 worth €500,000 over 6 furlongs at The Curragh on 28 September 2024

3. The Goffs €50,000 bonuses for a series of 2YO maidens at Irish racecourses throughout 2024

Goffs is Ireland’s global shop window for the Irish thoroughbred, and we look forward to welcoming huge numbers of buyers from around the world to Kildare Paddocks for the 2023 Irish National Yearling Sales. Following another memorable season bookended by Group 1 winner Jannah Rose and dual Classic winner Eldar Eldarov, along with the unique Two Million Series, there has never been a better time to buy an Orby yearling. On behalf of all the team at Goffs, I wish to thank Brian Kavanagh and his colleagues for their welcome and hard work, and wish all racegoers an enjoyable and successful day.

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the first day of the High Spirits and Food Festival featuring the Goffs Millions and the Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes – two of the highlights of the season here at the Curragh.

We are very grateful to today’s race sponsors - the Irish European Breeders Fund, Goffs, The Smurfit Family, Fitzpatrick’s Garage Mercedes-Benz, Bermingham Cameras, John Ormonde Wexford Sand, Ornella Underwriting, DMG Media and Manguard Plus. Your support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.

I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support.

We have made some changes to our offering which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our new café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. To watch racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today with the inaugural High Spirits & Food Festival running alongside a packed program of racing with the opportunity to try delicious food from a range of vendors.

We race here again at the Curragh tomorrow with the Friends of the Curragh Irish Cesarewitch, Europe’s richest flat handicap the feature race. We look forward to welcoming you back here tomorrow and for our remaining meetings of the 2023 flat season.

Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

No Nay Never colt, out of a half-sister to French 2000 Guineas winner Aussie Rules. His full-brother Hispanic is a decent sprinter for Ballydoyle so he is worth a look on debut. Star Rating 3

CURRAGH COMMENT

Aidan O’Brien holds a strong hand with three colts returning from mid-season breaks. There was a good word for Emperor Of Rome prior to his debut second at Dundalk, but the master trainer also spoke favourably of BATTLE FLEET and his Navan fourth behind the classy Givemethebeatboys was most encouraging. Latin finished behind Star Hunter at Leopardstown back in May but the chief threat to the Ballydoyle trio could come in the shape of Pipsy, who beat all bar the exciting King Cuan at Cork.

CURRAGH COMMENT

NO MORE PORTER started his solid season off with a fifth in the Irish Lincolnshire and he has hardly run a bad race all year, furthered by his most recent fourth at Leopardstown. The son of Elzaam is allowed to compete off the same rating and he ought to go very close. The main threat is Fernao, who took his maiden in smooth style at Listowel in June and he tries a first-time visor after a gelding operation. Half Nutz completes the shortlist.

THESMURFITFAMILYAND THECURRAGH

The Smurfit Family have enjoyed a successful association with The Curragh for many years, and in particular one of racing’s finest ever stayers.

Known for his fine association with Dermot Weld, Dr Michael Smurfit enjoyed many successes on the racetrack, both on the flat and in the National Hunt sphere. At the Curragh in particular, the Gladness Stakes of 1988 marked the start of an era, with Mick Kinane guiding Careafolie to victory in the seven furlong Group 3 for Dermot Weld.

Two of Dr Smurfit’s horses clashed in the 1991 Macdonagh Boland Stakes, a Listed race over seven furlongs, with the Jim Bolger-trained Ballyloop under Christy Roche getting the better of Pre-Eminent in the same colours for Dermot Weld and Mick Kinane.

A few years later, Vintage Crop emerged. A victory in Newmarket’s Cesarewitch under rider Walter Swinburn marked him as a stayer to follow, and he improved to win the 1993 Curragh Cup under Mick Kinane.

A short break followed, before he made a promising return over a mile and a quarter and took a step forward to land the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger in 1993, beating Richard Hannon’s Assessor and Foresee back in second and third.

A historic and ground breaking victory in the Melbourne Cup followed, before he returned to the Curragh for victory in a conditions race to prepare the talented stayer for a repeat victory in the feature St Leger. The victory did indeed follow under Mick Kinane, winning by a widening margin of three lengths to see off John Oxx’s Rayseka and Johnny Murtagh.

The Smurfit silks were also carried to victory by talented mare Cheviot Amble, trained by Patrick Flynn.

The tough mare was a multiple Listed winner, landing the Mooresbridge Stakes in heavy conditions in 1994 under John Egan.

Humbel too was a smart horse for Dermot Weld, winning the 1995 Blandford Stakes (then a Group 2 over 11f and open to colts), and although Media Puzzle only won once at the Curragh, he too was a smart stayer in the hands of Dermot Weld, winning the 2002 Melbourne Cup under Damien Oliver.

The family’s association with The Curragh has successfully continued through Tony Smurfit.

The winner of his first two starts at Leopardstown and Killarney but beaten twice since with a four-length fourth in the Group 2 Golden Fleece Stakes earlier this month. More needed. Winning Range Yld-Gd. Star Rating 3

One of three representing the stable who have won nine of the last 10 renewals of this contest, and arrives with a

record after scoring at Galway by over two lengths. Expected to improve for that experience Winning

Lightly-raced Dubawi colt who improved considerably form his debut courtesy of a comfortable success on heavy ground in a Galway maiden. He needs to step up on that to take a hand here but is open to plenty of improvement. Winning Range Hvy.

Once-raced Oasis Dream colt who came home a six-length fifth in a Naas maiden after weakening late on over the seven furlongs. Expected to find plenty of improvement but this still looks a huge ask. Star Rating 2

CURRAGH COMMENT

Stromberg may prove popular here after strolling home on his last two starts, but this represents a significant step up in class and he will need to improve again. GROSVENOR SQUARE won his only start despite running green at Galway and, with improvement to come, the half-brother to Irish Derby winner Santiago may come out on top, while stable companions Chief Little Rock and Navy Seal are last-time-out winners too and also warrant respect.

WIN: GROSVENOR SQUARE

CURRAGH COMMENT

SILMANIYA has finished runner-up the last twice and this looks a good opportunity to go one better on this occasion. Johnny Murtagh’s charge is on 3lb better terms with The Highway Rat, who finished just half a length in front of the selection at Navan earlier in the month. The top-weight is feared most with this drop in trip likely to bring out some more improvement in the five-year-old, while the consistent Never Shout Never can improve further and go well despite a 3lb rise for his second over 6f here last time.

WIN: SILMANIYA

JOEMcGRATH

DANGER: The Highway Rat

The Joe McGrath Premier Handicap pays tribute to one of the leading figures in Irish racing who died in 1966. He was one of the most influential figures in Irish politics and business and can also take a huge amount of credit for the success of the Irish racing industry today He enjoyed plenty of racing success most notably with Arctic Prince who won the Epsom Derby in 1951.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

CURRAGH COMMENT

CHERRY BLOSSOM was an easy maiden winner over 6f here before going on to fill second place in the Group 2 Lowther at York a month ago. The daughter of No Nay Never may improve for this step up in trip and will be hard to beat if doing so. Guildenstern should not be underestimated having chased home a top-class prospect on his racecourse bow at this venue last month. My Mate Alfie edges out Do It With Style and Storm Miami to be best of the rest.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Martin Hassett rode a winner at Punchestown last week and he has another good mount in this apprentice handicap courtesy of MAGIC CHARM, who was only beaten two lengths into fourth at Naas last time despite traffic problems and racing from 7lb out of the handicap. A drop back to the trip of his only success should help and he is expected go well in first-time blinkers. However, there are no shortage of dangers, most notably recent C&D winner Brewel Hill and Partisan Hero, who can improve again following a confidence-boosting first victory. Morning Approach and Coffeemeanscoffee are others to consider.

WIN: MAGIC CHARM

DANGER: Brewel Hill

CURRAGH COMMENT

YOSEMITE VALLEY was pitched into the Anglesey on the back of a promising debut fourth over C&D last year and proved it wasn’t tilting at windmills, chasing home brilliant sprinter Little Big Bear. He was then forced to sit out 13 months, and was turned over at short odds on his Navan comeback, but the run should help bring him forward and he can get his career back on track. Vera’s Secret shaped like an imminent winner on her Punchestown introduction and is the logical threat, although newcomer Never Cry Never is worth a look.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Plenty of unknown quantities here, but it may be best to focus on the experienced runners, starting with FEATHERTOP. Twice raced, she has finished third and second so far and if she finds any further improvement, she may get off the mark. Shrewsbury Road could surprise a few after running on into fifth on his return and, with improvement likely, he can go close. Jupiter Rock and Nostringsattached are a couple more to consider.
