€4 OFFICIAL RACE PROGRAMME
Day 2 - 10th September 2023
Welcome to the second day of the newly rebranded Irish Champions Festival. While we celebrate the 10th running of such a special weekend with a new name, the festival continues to offer what it was designed to do – showcase the very best of the Irish racing and breeding industries – and today’s programme of events at the Curragh certainly does that.
Hopefully, many of you will have participated in this morning’s Curragh Thoroughbred Trail which included visits to see world champion racehorse and leading international sire Sea The Stars at his new home at Giltown Stud, a tour of the world-renowned Curragh training grounds and a behind the scenes look at Richard Brabazon’s Rangers Lodge Racing Stables where the focus was on teaching our younger generations about life in a racing stable, the first education of young racehorses through to their retirement from racing and subsequent careers in other equestrian activities.
Thousands of racehorses are trained here on the gallops every year, making the Curragh the largest public training centre in the country. It is an undoubted centre of excellence in every aspect of the Irish thoroughbred and breeding industries.
And what lies ahead this afternoon, on one of the greatest racecourses in the world, ably demonstrates that excellence. Today’s unique racecard features four Group 1 races, the Comer Group International Irish St Leger, the final Classic of the 2023 season, the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Flying Five Stakes, the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes. It’s races like these that create the champions of the world.
Thank you for supporting Irish Champions Festival and I wish you all a thor enjoyable day. you Irish I you a thoroughly al
Suzanne Eade Chief Executive, Horse Racing Ireland
I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the second day of the Irish Champions Festival – one of the highlights of the season here at the Curragh and the only day in the flat calendar to feature four Group 1 races. After a fabulous day’s racing at Leopardstown yesterday, we are delighted to take up the baton today.
We are very grateful to today’s race sponsors - the Irish European Breeders Fund, Moyglare Stud Farm, Goffs Bloodstock Sales, Comer Group International, Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai and Tattersalls Ireland. Your support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.
I would also like to thank all owners of runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support.
We have made some changes to our offerings this season which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our new café Orby’s by Lucy which is beside the parade ring and is open seven days a week, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. To watch racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand.
There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today, including the Curragh Style Awards in association with Weir & Sons, Kilkea Castle Hotel and Moet, the Moyglare Kidzone as well as a variety of food and beverage outlets. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Newbridge Gospel Choir and the Artane Junior Band. We are also grateful to Treo Eile in association with Moyglare Stud for collaborating on a Parade of Champions which will take place in the parade following the 1st race and 4th race
We race here again at the Curragh in two weeks’ time with a two-day meeting which features the Goffs Million and Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford Stakes on Saturday and the Friends of the Curragh Irish Cesarewitch on Sunday while the weekend will also include the inaugural High Spirits and Food Fest with an exciting mix of food and drink offerings
We look forward to welcoming you back here that weekend and at our remaining meetings of the 2023 flat season.
Best wishes for a memorable day’s racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

DOUVAN(FR)
13yo -Sire: Walk In The Park (IRE) Dam: Star Face (FR)
Trainer: W P Mullins
Owner: Mrs S Ricci
Breeder: S A R L Haras De La Faisanderie
A win and placing over hurdles in France as a 4-year-old was the starting point for Douvan, before continuing his career with Willie Mullins from November 2014. This was a racing career that saw Douvan unbeaten from his first run for the Closutton trainer on 22 November 2014 to February 2017.
Incorporating 14 wins over hurdles and fences, this feat included eight Grade 1 races and three Grade 2 races.
Douvan was cheered into the Cheltenham winner’s enclosure for the 2015 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Gr1 and the 2016 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase Gr1, with a win also at Aintree in the Doom Bar Maghull Novice Chase Gr1 in 2016.
On home soil, Douvan added Grade 1 wins in the Champion Novice Hurdle and Ryanair Novice Chase in Punchestown, while at Leopardstown his name is on the Racing Post Novice Chase, the Arkle Novice Chase and the Paddy Power Chase.
Douvan last raced in November 2019 and he is presently enjoying a showing career with Clare Ricketts in Carlow. He stood 4th in the Racehorse to Riding Horse class at this year’s Dublin Horse Show.
FAUGHEEN(IRE)
15yo - Sire: Germany (USA) Dam: Miss Pickering (IRE)
Trainer: W P Mullins
Owner: Mrs S Ricci Breeder: Dr John Waldron
Faugheen, famously nicknamed as ‘Faugheen the Machine’, commenced racing in 2012 and of his 26 starts, he was only out of the frame 4 times.
He was the winner of 13 graded races over hurdles and fences, of which 11 were Gr1, making him one of the best National Hunt horses ever.
His wins include the Cheltenham Novices Hurdle & Champion Hurdle, back-to-back Christmas Hurdles at Kempton, Leopardstown Irish Champion Hurdle, Punchestown Champion Hurdle and Morgiana Hurdle.
He unfortunately got injured during 2016 and 2017 meaning that he had to have a long time off but he came back for a chasing career at the age of 11, and won two Grade 1s.
Faugheen was retired to the Irish National Stud in Kildare in 2020, where he joined the other ‘Living Legends’ from the racetrack. He now has a second career in ‘Tourism’, enjoying the adoration of all that visit the tourist attraction.
SIZINGJOHN(GB)
13yo - Sire: Midnight Legend (GB) Dam: La Perrotine (FR)
Trainer: Mrs John Harrington
Owner: Ann & Alan Potts Limited
Breeder: Bryan & Sandra Mayoh, Eskdale Stud
Sizing John raced from March 2014 to December 2019 – he won 2 hurdle races and 7 chases.
He won the 2014 Gr 1 Paddy Power Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown
Within a month of winning his beginner’s chase, he won the Gr2 Craddockstown Novice Chase at Punchestown.
In 2017 Sizing John became the first horse to complete the coveted Irish Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Punchestown Gold Cup treble. He was unbeaten in 5 straight graded runs, with wins also in the Gr3 Kinloch Brae Chase at Thurles and the Gr 1 John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase.
Unfortunately, a halt was called on his racing career due to an injury.
Back in the whole of his health, Sizing John commenced his transition to a second career last year. The pinnacle of this year’s showing season was to win the hotly contested Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show, ridden by Kate Harrington.
MAXDYNAMITE(FR)
13yo - Sire: Great Journey (JPN) Dam: Mascara (GER)
Trainer: W P Mullins
Owner: Mrs S Ricci

Max Dynamite commenced his racing in France in 2012 and raced in a total of 5 countries, including Ireland, the UK, Hong Kong and Australia.
He won the Gr2 Lonsdale Cup at York and his career was highlighted by 2nd and 3rd places in the Melbourne Cup in Australia in 2015 and 2017, regarded by many as of one of the hardest races in the world to win.
He showed his versatility by also winning over hurdles and running at the Galway and Cheltenham Festivals. Max Dynamite won over €1 million in prize money, something that is achieved by only very small number of horses. His last run was in August 2020. He now has a showing career with Liz Murphy in Galway and competed in the highly regarded Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show in August.
TIGERROLL(IRE)

It was not until he took to fences that he came into his own. Tiger Roll won the 2016 Munster National and Lisa O’Neill partnered him to win the 2017 Cheltenham National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Chase Gr2.
The little bay won the hearts of the public when he won back-to-back Randox Health Grand Nationals at Aintree in 2018 and 2019 under Davy Russell. He quickly became one of the best-known horses of the current century, renowned for his versatility and will to win.
He put his stamp on the Cheltenham Cross Country race, by winning it three times in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and placed second in 2020 and on his final outing in March 2022.
2022 saw Tiger Roll’s adaptability came to the fore again as the gelding and Ted O’Leary won in the show ring and stood third in the Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show. He is presently retired to his owner Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown Stud.

IRISHCORRESPONDENT(IRE)
9yo -Sire: Teofilo (IRE) Dam: Contrary (IRE)
Trainer: A S Cruz
Owner: Eddie Wong Ming Chak & Wong Leung Sau Hing
Breeder: Ballygallon Stud Limited
Irish Correspondent commenced his racing career in 2017 with Michael Halford in Co. Kildare with two wins and was 3rd in the Irish 2000 Guineas to Churchill, who is now a very successful stallion.
He was sold to be trained by Tony Cruz in Hong Kong and as is the normality with horses exported to Hong Kong, his name was changed, to Exultant.
He recorded 11 wins from 32 starts abroad, never worse than fifth-place in any race with prize-money earnings of over €8 million – making him the second highest-ever earner in Hong Kong racing history. This included five Group 1 triumphs including the Hong Kong Vase, a sole Group 2 victory and four Group 3s.
He was 2020 Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, twice crowned Champion Stayer and Champion Middle-Distance Horse, both times in successive seasons - which confirmed that he was a horse of great durability.
Following a retirement ceremony in the Parade Ring at Sha Tin racecourse in 2021, his breeder Belinda Strudwick and the team at Ballygallon Stud welcomed him back to County Kilkenny, where he is enjoying his retirement.
SUPASUNDAE(GB)
13yo - Sire: Galileo (IRE) Dam: Distinctive Look (IRE)

During a period in his career, he ran in ten consecutive grade one hurdle races and was never out of the first three, showing he was one of the best hurdlers around at the time.
Jockey Robbie Power described Supasundae as a tough, honest horse who always gave in his runs.
In 2020, Robbie Power welcomed Supasundae in his retirement and in the hands of Grace Dehaene he also lined up for the Racehorse to riding Horse class at this year’s Dublin Horse Show.
ROYALDIAMOND(IRE)

Royal Diamond won the St Leger Trial Stakes (Gr3), the Listed Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown, before travelling to Ascot to win the British Champions Long Distance Cup in 2013 when trained and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, which is something that doesn’t happen too often.
During the latter stages of his career, he ran at the Dubai World Cup Meeting, Royal Ascot, and in the Melbourne Cup, which proved to be his final race in 2014.
His second career is in ‘education’, heading up the panel of ex-racehorses at the Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE) in Kildare. Horses of this calibre are important in the education of our future jockeys and industry staff.

CURRAGH COMMENT
In a typically competitive sprint, it may pay to side with the UK challengers on this occasion, headed by Archie Watson’s ALBASHEER. He got up to force a dead-heat with Summerghand at York after waiting for room and may better that effort if he gets a clearer run. David O’Meara’s nine-year-old is still more than capable. though, and could get involved once again, alongside maiden winner Never Shout Never, who caught the eye at Cork ahead of his handicap debut. Dandyville and Fresh also make the shortlist in a fascinating renewal.

With thanks to Moyglare Stud! BOLDLAD
The first race today honours the great Bold Lad. Trained by Paddy Prendergast, Bold Lad began his career in 1966 by winning the Youngsters Stakes in Ireland and was then sent to Royal Ascot to contest the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in which he defeated a field which included Royal Palace. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster defeating the previously unbeaten Ribocco, after which Prendergast described him as the best two-year-old he had ever trained, including Windy City.
In September he won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the season’s best juveniles, he was rated three pounds clear of runner-up Royal Palace giving him Champion honors in Ireland and England.
Bold Lad began his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland. Sent to England, he was the 100/30 joint-favorite with Royal Palace going in to the Classic 2,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He finished unplaced behind Royal Palace and Taj Dewan, having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. Bold Lad then started favourite for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Irish-trained four-year-old Bluerullah. In the last race of his career, ran third to Reform in Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Retired to stud at a fee of 400 guineas, Bold Lad made a “spectacular” start to his breeding career, siring the 1000 Guineas winner Waterloo in his first crop of foals. He also sired the leading sprinters Boldboy and Never So Bold, the Richmond Stakes winner Persian Bold (sire of Kooyonga) and Ballad Rock, the sire of Chief Singer.

BREEDERS’CUPCONNECTION
The Moyglare Stud Stakes is a race for the top two-year-old fillies and is a part of the Breeders Cup Challenge Series, where the winner gains automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf race.
Aidan O’Brien’s 2017 victor, Happily, has been one of only two horses to attempt to complete the double so far. After her very close victory over Magical in this contest, she landed a Group 1 in Chantilly in convincing fashion leading to her being sent off as 9/4F out in Del Mar. It was the quickest ground she had ever encountered however, and it took its effect as she finished last of the fourteen runners that day.
Joseph O’Brien has won the Moyglare Stud Stakes as both a jockey and a trainer, and he landed his first Group 1 as a trainer in this contest back in 2016 with Intricately. A shock winner of this contest at 25/1, the Fastnet Rock filly took her chance at the Breeder’s Cup when lining up in Santa Anita on her next start. She could not take advantage ‘Win and You’re In’ series either though, eventually weakening into 11th.
However, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner did in fact compete in the Moylgare Stud Stakes, and landed the spoils over in Keeneland despite being beaten into second at the Curragh. Meditate fell victim to a mesmerising performance from subsequent Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Tahiyra in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 2022, but produced a fantastic performance of her own when swooping powerfully down the outer under Ryan Moore to land the Grade 1 at the Breeders’ Cup in impressive style.
The Flying Five Stakes on Irish Champions Festival is also “Win and You`re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, worth a whopping $1million. The double has only been completed once, and that was by Kevin Ryan`s sprinter Glass Slippers.
In 2020, Kevin Ryan`s five-year-old landed the Group 1 sprint here under regular rider Tom Eaves as the jockey was able to follow the pace of the leaders and get a nice tow into the race, before kicking on to win by half a length. Glass Slippers was the only non-American runner in the field at Keeneland and the filly was waited with patiently by Tom Eaves as they set off at a breakneck pace, before picking the gap and squeezing through to power home and land the prize. It was a fantastic ride by Tom Eaves on his Breeder`s Cup debut as he beat off the American speedsters in their own back yard to become the first European jockey to land the Turf Sprint.
Fellow Yorkshire trainer John Quinn also attempted to complete the lucrative double last year with his superstar filly, Highfield Princess. After a dominant performance in the Flying Five Stakes, landing her third consecutive Group 1 in the process, she too lined up at Keeneland. Her impressive run would unfortunately come to an end, but she lost nothing in defeat as she ran a superb race to finish fourth amongst the world’s best sprinters.

MOYGLARESTUDSTAKES
HISTORY
The event is named after its long-term sponsor, Moyglare Stud and the inagural renewal came in 1970. It was formerly contested over 6 furlongs, and for a period it held Group 3 status. It was promoted to Group 2 level in 1979, and to Group 1 in 1983. Its distance was extended to 7 furlongs in 1992. In 2014 it became part of the Irish Champions Weekend fixture.
The Moyglare Stud Stakes became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series in 2009. The winner of the race now earns an automatic invitation to compete in the same year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.Champions Weekend fixture.
MOSTSUCCESSFULJOCKEY
Despite Aidan O’Brien’s dominance over the years, he has never had a consistent winning jockey. Surprisingly, the leading jockey has just 4 wins and lies with the former Flat champion jockey Christy Roche.
RECORDTIME
Despite the 1980 and 1984 renewal having no official time, the fastest time over six furlongs was in 19991 when Chimes of Freedom came home in a rapid time of 1.10. 90.
Over the new seven furlongs, the record time stands with the British-raider Rizeena, who set the Curragh alight in 2013.
SHORTESTPRICE/ LONGESTPRICE
In 2005 the fabulous filly Rumplestiltskin was named the Champion two-year-old filly and was the highest rated filly internationally. Her SP was as short as 2/7 on the day, as she narrowly prevailed by a neck.
On the other hand, the 2016 renewal saw a shock winner as the Joseph O’Brien trained Intricately stepped up on her maiden win to land the spoils at a huge price of 25/1.
SMALLEST/ LARGESTFIELDS
The smallest field in the Moyglare has been seven, which has occurred on four occasions (1989), (2009), (2013) & (2016).
However, the largest field size in this race came back in 1983 when Kevin Moses rode Gala Event to success. She beat her 19 other rivals that day and it is unlikely this will ever be topped, now upgraded to Group 1 status.
MOST SUCCESSFUL TRAINER
The master trainer for Ballydoyle, Aidan O’Brien’s success began in 2000 when Sequoyah stole the show.
Out of his record 9 wins, Rumplestiltskin (2005) Misty for Me (2010), Happily (2017) Love (2019) have all been fan favourites and will be remembered for years to come.

Celebrating the
Over 50 years of continual, unbroken and increasingly enthusiastic sponsorship of one of the world’s most influential juvenile fillies’ races. An occasion to celebrate, applaud, shout to the sky THANK YOU to the Haefner family for this enduring legacy.
Established by Moyglare Stud founder Walter Haefner in 1973, the stewardship of this famous race passed to his daughter Eva-Maria well over a decade ago, as did his commitment to Irish racing.
1984 - Park Appeal
1988 - Flamenco Wave
1989 - Chimes of Freedom
1982 - Habibti
Consistency and quality have long been the mark of the Moyglare Stud Stakes, now well established as a pre-eminent source of Champion race fillies and future leading broodmares. The roll of honour stretches through the years from Arctique Royale, Habibti, Park Appeal, Chimes of Freedom, Flamenco Wave, Edabiya, Sequoyah to Chelsea Rose and in the recent decade Misty For Me, Maybe and Sky Lantern, top race fillies, already the dams of a Guineas winner, July Cup winner and G1 winning fillies. These are the tap root for the thoroughbred dynasties so vital for the breed worldwide, a veritable equine hall of fame resulting from a single race – and a single dream.
As the Moyglare Stud Stakes moves into it’s Sixth decade, we applaud all the past winners, and their breeders, owners, trainers, jockeys, stable and stud staff and look forward in eager anticipation to the future of this great race built on such strong foundations.

CURRAGH COMMENT
It will be interesting to see how Never Ending Story goes back in a Group 2, but JACKIE OH still looks the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s quartet on the evidence of her fetching victory in Group 3 company at Gowran in July. The daughter of Galileo would probably prefer easier ground but she may still have too much class for this field, with Araminta and Mashia others to note from a possible value perspective.

HORSE WELFARE- A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

A horse that thrives when coming across the pond, Tim Easterby’s charge is 4-4 at the Curragh and remains with a leading chance to land this Group One, on a track that he loves.
Subsequently gelded before the start of the season, the six-year-old returned with a triumphant display in the Group Two Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes, making all to win cosily by just under five lengths.
Just two months later, over this course and distance, he produced arguably his best performance of his career, powering away from the pack as he hit the line in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes.

CURRAGH COMMENT
Art Power might not be quite the force of old, but Tim Easterby’s stable star has recorded four victories in as many visits here and merits the utmost respect with that in mind. Bradsell defeated HIGHFIELD PRINCESS in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot but the latter reversed the form at York and last year’s winner gets the nod. The classy Night Of Thunder mare bolted up 12 months ago and she is fancied to lead home a one-two-three for the UK.

TRAINER: Karl Burke
OWNER: Clipper Logistics
SIRE: Too Darn Hot (GB)
DAM: Agnes Stewart (IRE)
BREEDER: Branton Court Stud Ltd
Fallen Angel makes her first trip to the Curagh to attempt to conquer her first Group 1 success.
With a solid start to her career, a nearly perfect two from three, which included success in the Sweet Solera at Newmarket and narrowly missing out in Sandown Listed race. Her most recent win she blew away the rest of the field, winning comfortably by three lengths.
She gave Too Darn Hot a first black type winner. Trainer Karl Burke said, ‘she is a nice filly with a good head’. It appears she could go on again to perform well in this race.
Unbeaten in her two starts as a two-year-old, this flashy filly put up a high-class performance to fend off the Coolmore runner Meditate under Chris Hayes.
Returning to the scene of her sparkling Moyglare victory as a three-year-old, and on the quickest ground she’s encountered, she landed her first Classic in the 1000 Guineas here and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
TAHIYRA
2022MOYGLARESTUDSTAKESWINNER
Following on from a year of anniversaries and celebrations, once again, we acknowledge all stable, stud and backroom staff, far and wide, who keep the business of racing going through the vagaries of weather, pandemics, politics of all kinds, and we thank you.
2023 brings an anniversary of a different kind. Fifty years is a milestone of consequence, however you look at it, for a man to work for the same people on the same stud through it’s evolution, that for sure deserves applause, respect and acknowledgement with thanks and affection.
Pat Farrell started work at Moyglare Stud in 1973. Born on Baroda Stud, brought up on Old Connell, apprenticed on the Curragh, Pat was born into racing Moving to Moyglare Stud alongside his father John, Pat has pretty much done every job a stud hands up - travelling, foaling, breaking, riding, sales preparation/presentation and well known for his accurate record keeping through the years. In 1990, he succeeded to the Stud Groom role at Moyglare Stud and that role will see out his days.
Pat recalls traveling to Kentucky to bring a young Be My Guest back to Moyglare Stud, preparing him for sale at Goffs, and watching him make what was then the world record price for a yearling; a favourite mare Honey Bend and her 14 foals; attending the races to see Free Eagle, Search For A Song, Kyprios and Homeless Songs as just a few of the Group One winners he foaled over the years.
Rarely away from the stud, Pat and his wife Olive are keen racegoers including their annual pilgrimage to Galway for fishing and racing. Always happy to see a victorious Moyglare Stud graduate, as with Livio Milo this past year
In 2018, Pat Farrell deservedly won both the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Irish Racing Excellence Award and the Dedication to Racing Award, in front of his family, co-workers and friends. An award for excellence amongst your peers is for most of us, a rare event.
Though gradually moving into retirement mode, Pat is an integral part of Moyglare Stud and always will be. Everyone has a story about Pat, including all the Haefner family, who are deeply grateful for his years of dedication, hard work and humour.
Thank you PAT FARRELL

CURRAGH COMMENT
YLANG YLANG has created a fine impression in both of her victories to date and looks more than capable of landing a hat-trick now stepped up to the highest level. Vespertilio (second) finished behind the selection at Leopardstown in July and franked that form when winning a Group 2 over course and distance last month. The Night Of Thunder filly is feared most, ahead of the consistent Porta Fortuna, who looks a potential improver now upped to 7f.

A race named after the fifteen time winner of this race Vincent O’Brien, the National Stakes has been dominated by the O’Brien family for years, with Joseph O’Brien landing this race in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
However, Aidan O’Brien has not seen success in this race since Churchill (2016) but today has one of the most exciting two-year-olds in training in his firepower.
Unbeaten in his two starts to date, he made a fine debut here in July, before producing a breath-taking performance by just over six lengths in Group 2 honours in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket. A worthy short-priced favourite.
MOSTSUCCESSFULJOCKEY’S ANDTRAINERS-NATIONALSTAKES
The National Stakes has long been one of the top two-year-old races in the European calendar, a race where superstars are made, and the most successful trainer in the contest is the one who it is now aptly named after; Vincent O’Brien. The legendary trainer won the prize an incredible 15 times, including a dominant span from 1979 where he landed the spoils in eight of the ten editions.
The man who he was succeeded by at Ballydoyle has carried the torch in a similar vein. Aidan O’Brien won the National Stakes for the first time back in 1996 with Desert King and has since won a further ten renewals of the contest. Eight different jockeys have won this in the saddle for the master of Ballydoyle, including his son Joseph. Twice a winner in the saddle for his father, aboard Gleneagles and Air Force Blue, Joseph O’Brien has since added two National Stakes victories as a trainer too, including last year’s renewal. From across the Irish Sea, the British challenge has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years. Charlie Appleby’s powerful Godolphin operation have sent over just four horses to the Curragh for the National Stakes in the last five years, but amazingly have come away with the prize in three of those. Richard Hannon Sr also won the Group 1 event in 2013 with Toormore, and so British trainers have been building up quite the record in the past decade.
Leading jockey honours in the National Stakes are split between Lester Piggott and Michael Kinane, each with four victories to their name. Kinane rode two victories apiece for Dermot Weld and Aidan O’Brien but couldn’t secure that record-breaking fifth win in subsequent rides.
In recent years, William Buick has proven to be the most successful jockey in the National Stakes with three wins in the past five years, including that mesmerising performance aboard Pinatubo in 2019. He will no doubt be searching for that elusive fourth victory to join the top of the leader board. Perhaps surprisingly, Ryan Moore will be searching for just his second success in the National Stakes, the jockey winless in six attempts since Churchill’s wide-margin victory in 2016. Fellow Ballydoyle rider Seamie Heffernan has two victories on his record but not since Power in 2011.

HONOURINGATRUELEGEND OFTHETURF
If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does.
From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard.
However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and influential sons of his such as Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor.
The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs.
At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982.
Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983).
Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. Hopefully today’s renewal will live up to the high standard that Vincent helped to set in the race during the course of his remarkable career.

CITY OF TROY could hardly have been more impressive when pulling clear of his rivals in the Superlartive Stakes at Newmarket last month. That performance suggests that the son of Justify is more than capable of making his mark at Group 1 level and he merits the utmost respect. That said, Bucanero Fuerte cannot be discounted following his four-length win in the Phoenix Stakes here last month, while similar comments apply to the selection’s stablemate Henry Longfellow after his Futurity success.

Kyprios makes his long-awaited return today at the Curragh to attempt to conquer his fifth Group 1 success.
A perfect six from six last season, which included success in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, the Goodwood Cup and the Irish St Leger last year, before going on to blow his opponents away with a 20 length success in the Prix du Cadran on Arc weekend.
Injury has ruined the first half of his campagin but Aidan O’Brien has said ‘he is in very good shape’ and should be feared again to retain his Irish St Leger crown, albeit not being seen for almost a year.
MOYGLARE’SRECENTSUCCESSIRISHSTLEGER
Moyglare Stud have had an excellent record in the Group 1 Irish St Leger in recent years, and their famous silks have been worn to victory in three of the past four renewals of the Irish Classic.
This began in 2019, when Dermot Weld’s three-year-old, Search For A Song, announced herself as a big player in the staying division. Following a breakthrough Listed success at the York Ebor Festival, the homebred daughter of Galileo stepped up in trip for the very first time and took the extra distance in her stride. Travelling keenly through the field in the early parts of the race, she pulled herself to the lead under Chris Hayes as they hit the mile marker. The filly wouldn’t see another rival though, as she kicked clear to extend her lead in the home straight, repelling all rivals as she powered home to win by over two lengths in fine style.
Search For A Song would return a year later to defend her crown, this time with a new jockey in the saddle in the form of Oisin Orr. She would settle a lot better in 2020, tracking the pace in the rear of midfield, however she still had a bit of ground to make up on the long-time leader Fujaira Prince entering the home straight. She pulled out a real tough, determined performance to stay on past the field and win the battle to record back-to-back victories in the Irish St Leger.
Unfortunately, she was unable to land the hattrick in 2021 but it was another Moyglare Stud-bred and part-owned horse that landed the prize in 2022; Kyprios. Aidan O’Brien’s son of Galileo had asserted himself as the King of the staying division with four straight victories on route to the Curragh, including the Gold Cup at Ascot. Despite being sent off a short-priced favourite, he had to really dig deep for the victory under Ryan Moore, just holding off the strong challenge from English raider Hamish.

CURRAGH COMMENT
All eyes will be on the returning KYPRIOS as he makes his first appearance since completing the perfect season last year with a demolition job in the Prix du Cadran at Longchamp. Unfortunately, the five-year-old has been sidelined for the majority of this campaign due to a setback, but he has clearly been pleasing connections in recent weeks and is a cut above the opposition based on his achievements in 2022. Stable companion Emily Dickinson (second) and Eldar Eldarov (fourth) both had no chance from their positions in the Goodwood Cup, but the pair are more than capable of taking advantage if the selection falters.

has yet to recapture the promise of her debut when runner-up at Cork over just shorter
distance, and it is difficult to build a case for her now Star Rating 3
A promising filly who has improved with every start and her most recent second at Cork was
encouraging. She is entitled to be a leading contender on the back of that. Star Rating 4
She was never a factor on her debut at Leopardstown in July and she would need a lot to go her way if she is to get involved in this. Star Rating 2
She must hold strong claims on the back of an eyecatching debut at Navan last week, where she kept on for a close-up fourth late on. Star Rating 4
Her trainer looks to have stronger claims with the more experienced Vestigia and this newcomer is bred to get further in time, with her half-brother winning solely over seven furlongs-plus. Star Rating 2
She may well need the experience on her debut but her half-brother Earls has been a prolific handicapper, although a lot of his best work has been over further Star Rating 2

CURRAGH COMMENT
NATIVE AMERICAN has not been in action since an impressive victory at York in May and he looks to have been laid out for this valuable contest with Colin Keane booked for the ride. Richard Fahey’s colt could be anything and he is preferred to Nikki Swango, who continues to improve with each start, as well as promising Navan fourth Lively Set. CURRAGH COMMENT
Johnny Murtagh sent out a 1-2-3 in this event 12 months ago and can taste further glory courtesy of TAKE HEART, who ended Golden Spangle’s hat-trick ambitions at Naas and is open to plenty of further improvement. Starry Eyed and Genuine Article are other unexposed three-year-olds to consider, while the latter’s stablemate Coeur d’Or tops the weights on the back of his Irish Cambridgeshire triumph, although third home Crystal Black could reverse that form. Didn’thavemuchtodo seems on a nice mark for one who has gone close in Listed company more than once.
