Welcome to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

I am delighted to welcome you to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby as we celebrate our 16th year as title sponsor and our 22nd year in association with The Curragh Racecourse

This year ’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby marks the 158th running of the historic race, which was first run in 1866. The event continues to generate global viewership, and this year it will be significantly enhanced by the full eight-race program after becoming par t of the Tote World Pool for the first time It ’s an exciting initiative, for which, in addition to the racing, The Curragh and Dubai Duty Free has worked together to deliver an exciting festival with something for ever ybody, including live music, style awards and much more.

Dubai Duty Free has grown to become one of the leading travel retail operators in the world in terms of turnover, with sales of US$1.74 billion in 2022. This year, we are marking our 40th anniversar y, and we are ver y excited to celebrate this major milestone.

Our operation continues to grow in line with Dubai’s impressive expansion plans and I would like to take this oppor tunity to thank His Highness Sheik h Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, for his suppor t of our operation over the years. I am also extremely proud of the effor ts of all of our over 5,000 employees in ensuring our continued success.

As par t of our ongoing promotion of Dubai, we have successfully utilised spor ts sponsorship to promote the city as a leading business and leisure destination. In addition to being the title sponsor of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, which offers a rich purse of Euro 1.25 million, the operation also regularly flies the flag in the UK for two- day race meetings in April and September at the historic Newbur y Racecourse and at Ascot Racecourse for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in August

Other major spor ting events that receive our suppor t include the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free and attracts the top WTA and ATP tennis players in the world. This year, the tournament celebrated its 31st anniversar y and was won by Barbora Krejcikova and Daniil Medvedev, respectively, who both claimed their maiden Dubai titles.

Our international spor ting stor y continues with our suppor t to the Horizon Irish Open tak ing place at the K Club from 7th – 10th September, for which we are an official par tner

I would like to thank The Curragh Racecourse, Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board and Horse Racing Ireland for extending such a warm welcome to Dubai Duty Free. I hope that the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby brings with it some of the excitement and glamour that is synonymous with Dubai itself

I wish you all a pleasant day of racing and entertainment.

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby – the highlight of the racing season here at the Curragh.

We hope that you have an enjoyable day with some wonderful racing.

We are very grateful to today’s title sponsor Dubai Duty Free and in particular Colm and Breeda McLoughlin, Salah Tahlak and his wife Fatima, Sinead and Jihad El Sibai and Jasmin Micoyco who are all true friends of Irish racing. This support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh. We are also grateful to Gain Equine Nutrition, Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables and the Irish EBF for their sponsorship of today’s programme.

We are also very proud that for the first time, the Curragh is hosting a Tote World Pool race day with all eight races available to multiple Tote betting organisations worldwide and therefore generating extensive global coverage for all races.

We have made changes to our o ering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our new café Orbys by Lucy and the Festival Quarter marquee adjacent to the pre parade ring as well as Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is available at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today as well as mobile food and beverage outlets, while after racing, the party will continue in the Festival Quarter marquee with music by Spring Break.

I would like to thank all owners with runners here today also - we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for your support.

I hope you enjoy your day and look forward to welcoming you back here at the Curragh for the Juddmonte Irish Oaks Weekend on 22nd and 23rd July.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a su cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THE GAIN RAILWAY STAKES

The Railway Stakes is one of the oldest two-year-old races in the country having first been run in 1851. From 1973 through to 2002 it held Group 3 status and since then it has been run as a Group 2 contest.

It is the premier domestic trial for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes run in August and since 2005 6 horses have won both races – George Washington (2005), Holy Roman Emperor (2006), Mastercraftsman (2008), Alfred Nobel (2009), Sudirman 2013 and Siskin (2019).

Once again this year, The GAIN Railway Stakes forms part of the “Champion Collection”, a series of three races at the Curragh forming a clear pathway of progression for two-year-olds. The winner of today’s race gains an automatic entry to the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, the first two-year-old Group 1 race of the season.

The first race in the series, the GAIN First Flier Stakes, was won by Fozzy Stack’s talented Castle Star, who then followed up in the second race of the series, the GAIN Marble Hill Stakes. The talented son of Starspangledbanner has looked much the best juvenile sprinter around following those two fine wins.

A host of talented horses have won the GAIN Railway Stakes. Subsequent Champion Sire and sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Paddy O’Prado to name a few, El Prado, won this race under Lester Piggott in 1991 for trainer Vincent O’Brien, while the 2000’s saw a period of dominance by Aidan O’Brien.

King of Kings became O’Brien’s first winner in 1997, with the likes of Rock of Gibraltar, George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor and Mastercraftsman all successful in the race during unrivalled Ballydoyle success.

Back to back winners trained in the UK, Formosina and Lilbourne Lad, trained by Jeremy Noseda and Richard Hannon Sr respectively, marked a notable sea change and it wasn’t until 2015 that Aidan O’Brien won the race again, with Painted Cliffs.

In recent years, Ger Lyons has tasted success, first with Medicine Jack in 2016 and then Siskin in 2019, both ridden by Colin Keane. In 2020, Ken Condon recorded a welcome win with Laws Of Indices, a talented son of Power who defied big odds to win under Chris Hayes.

Ridden for the first time by Hayes, Laws Of Indices started the 66/1 outsider of the field, which included the smart Lucky Vega, Aidan O’Brien’s Merchants Quay and the Ger Lyons-trained favourite, To Glory.

Held up at the back of the field, Hayes moved his mount into a challenging positon two furlongs out before asking him for more in the final furlong, where he tenaciously took up the lead.

Go Bears Go won an extremely competitve renewal in 2021. He became the first British trained winner since the Richard Hannon trained Kool Kompany back in 2014.

Shartash lowered the colours of the well fancied Ballydoyle runner Blackbeard in last year’s renewal. Johnny Murtagh had, as a jockey, ridden two winners but up until last year had been unable to get his name on the roll of honour as a trainer. That changed 12 months ago, when his talented juvenile squeezed through the narrowest of gaps under Ben Coen, to pip Blackbeard in the shadow of the post.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Ever since he made a sparkling debut here in March, BUCANERO FUERTE has been highly touted by connections and he went someway to proving them right when an excellent third in the Coventry. The winner of that contest looks very smart, and his form looks a level above that of the Norfolk Stakes, in which His Majesty (fourth) finished ahead of Devious (sixth) when leading home his group on the near side. Unquestionable made quite the impression when scoring over C&D latest and he must enter calculations as well.

WIN: BUCANERO FUERTE DANGER: Devious

Bucanero Fuerte ran an exceptional race in what looked a strong Coventry at Royal Ascot. He did well to finish third after being prominent throughout and should continue to progress. His Majesty ran creditably to finish fourth in the Norfolk, finishing first in his group and a fair way clear of second. His run can be marked up having been slowly away and raced on the wrong side, and he is expected to finish in the frame here. Unquestionable is difficult to assess, having won comfortably on his second start, but he finished third behind His Majesty on debut, who is taken to confirm his superiority over his stablemate. Of the rest, I Am Invictus makes most appeal. He finished third behind excellent Coventry winner River Tiber, before a good second to Pearls And Rubies, who was second behind Snellen in the Chesham. He should continue to progress, and whilst he is unlikely to break his maiden here, he should run another fine race.

CURRAGH COMMENT

COMMANCHE FALLS has been running with plenty of credit in Group races having gone down by a head in the Group 3 Abernant at Newmarket in April. His most recent display saw him finish third in the Duke Of York and a repeat of that performance at this level would make him tough to beat. Tango Flare remains open to improvement on just his sixth career outing, following a brace of victories at Cork and Fairyhouse, while others for the shortlist include Wodao and Mooneista.

WIN: COMMANCHE FALLS

DANGER: Mooneista

A tough race to unpick, with a variety of interesting contenders. The ever reliable Commanche Falls continues to run as well as ever, and is the top rated horse in the race by 4lbs. He should go very close back down in grade. Twilight Jet is also back down in grade, having finished down the field in three group races on his last three starts. He has won his last two starts in Group 3 races and should be there or thereabouts in this Listed contest. Wodao also brings some strong form to the table, having won a Listed race last season, before finishing second in two Groups 3s on soft ground last year. This improving 3 year old should make good use of his weight allowance, and if he acts on good ground (he has won on it before, but most of his form is on softer), he could also fill the frame. It would be remiss to fail to mention Mooneista, who has not won for a while, but often runs well in defeat. Finally, Tango Flare looks to be on the upgrade having won his last two starts, but this is a marked step up in grade and he might find a couple of these too classy.

16 YEARS OF THE DUBAI

DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY

2023 marks the 16th year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby, the premier Classic in the Irish flat racing season.

2008

The first year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby yielded a familiar result, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Frozen Fire running out the 16/1 winner under Seamie Heffernan.

Fame And Glory went one better at the Curragh than at Epsom, winning cosily under Johnny Murtagh by a five length margin. Settled into mid-division, Fame And Glory stretched away a furlong from the finish to win comfortably.

2010

2009

A talented son of Galileo, Cape Blanco made it five in a row for Aidan O’Brien when seeing off stablemates Midas Touch and Jan Vermeer to run out a half length winner and land back to back renewals of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for Johnny Murtagh.

Treasure Beach was only beaten a head at Epsom but made amends at the Curragh, winning in the hands of Colm O’Donoghue. He led home a Ballydoyle 1-2-3, with Seville and Memphis Tennessee rounding out the placings.

2012

2011

Camelot made it five races in a row and maintained his unbeaten record when winning as 1/5 favourite under Joseph O’Brien, marking a first Irish Derby for the rider.

He saw off four rivals to win cosily and maintain his reputation as a leading colt.

It was up to Jim Bolger to halt the period of Ballydoyle dominance, and Trading Leather did so in 2013. A winner of the Silver Stakes on his previous win, he got the better of Galileo Rock, Festive Cheer and Ruler Of The World to win the 2013 renewal. 2013 2014

One of the best winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Australia was imperious and made it an Epsom-Curragh double when winning as 1/8 favourite under Joseph O’Brien. He made it another 1-2-3 for Ballydoyle, with Kingfisher and Orchestra in behind. 2015

Behind Golden Horn at Epsom, Jack Hobbs showed his class to win the 2015 renewal of the race under William Buick for John Gosden and the Godolphin team. He became the first British-trained winner since Balanchine in 1994.

2016

A fine winner under Pat Smullen, Harzand backed up his dominant Epsom victory by winning cosily to give Dermot Weld his first winner of the race since Grey Swallow in 2004, was also ridden to victory by Pat Smullen. 2017

Capri showed grit and determination to turn round the form from Epsom and come out on top in a blanket finish under Seamie Heffernan. Delivered late, he beat Cracksman into second and Epsom winner Wings Of Eagles into third. 2018

A first Classic winner for Joseph O’Brien as a trainer, and a first Irish Classic winner for brother Donnacha in the saddle, Latrobe improved from his course and distance maiden win to see off Rostropovich and the talented Saxon Warrior.

A surprise winner of the 2019 renewal, Sovereign was most impressive when making all under Padraig Beggy to see off Epsom winner Anthony Van Dyck and six other rivals by a wide six length margin. 2019

A comfortable winner at Royal Ascot, Santiago was backed up quickly and just held off the late surge of stablemate Tiger Moth to record another Classic winner for Seamie Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien.

2020

Colin Keane gave Westover an uncomplicated ride when winning last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. Like Hurricane lane in 2021, he had been a strong finisher in the Epsom equivalent and ran home an impressive winner at the Curragh. In doing so, he made it back-to-back winners for Britain.

2021

Hurricane Lane ran a brilliant race at Epsom in defeat before taking victory in the 2021 classic. Frankie Dettori looked as though he may have stolen victory from the front, but Buick would not be denied and under an excellent drive ran Lone Eagle down in the shadows of the post.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A wide-open contest in which preferences lies with the unexposed RUN RAN RUN. A game winner over C&D on his most recent outing, the son of No Nay Never left a strong impression that there would be more to come and he can mount another bold bid off a 2lb higher mark. Silmaniya finished in seventh behind the selection on her latest run but can give him plenty to think about now on this occasion. Big Gossey and Laugh A Minute are just two others who boast solid credentials.

WIN: RUN RAN RUN

DANGER: Big Gossey

A very competitive handicap that could be won by any number of horses. Run Ran Run seems the obvious place to start, having won two of his three starts at the Curragh. He is lightly raced and should still be improving, and a chance is taken on that improvement here as he has snuck in near the bottom of the weights. Tawaazon has made rapid improvement this season, winning five of his ten starts since joining James McAuley. He was a disappointing favourite last time out, but it would be no surprise to see him resume progress despite his career high mark. Jon Riggens and Screen Siren both have collateral form with Tawaazon, but if there is one that could be lurking on a handy mark it looks to be English raider Sheikh Maz Mahood. Declan Carroll is a lesser known English trainer who is unlikely to be well-supported in the pool, but he is excellent at readying his handicappers. Zak Wheatley is well worth his 5lb claim and should provide some further value in the pool. He has won three of his last five and is on the upgrade.

Bet Type: Quinella

Selections: Run Ran Run, Sheikh Maz Mahood

2023

2023 will mark the 158th running of the Irish Derby. This is the 16th year of sponsorship of Ireland’s flagship race by Dubai Duty Free.

History

The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third. There were only three runners.

Back then, the Irish Derby was run on the second day of a four-day meeting and Selim won on each day. He had a walk-over on the first day, the day after the Irish Derby he again beat Tom King in the three-mile Queen’s Plate and on the final day he won over four miles.

Selim was bred by Dublin sports writer D. Kinsella and was owned by Englishman James Cockin who was based at Hednesford in Staffordshire and made frequent raids on Irish races.

In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-andthree-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

Female Trainers

The Irish Derby has never been won by a horse representing a female trainer. The Jessica Harrington-trained Gold Maze was the latest one to attempt to break the hoodoo in the 2020 renewal.

British Challengers

British runners have traditionally enjoyed much success in the race (23 wins in the last 51 years), and enjoyed success in last years race with Westover. Hurricane Lane in 2021 and Jack Hobbs in 2015 are other recent British trained winners.

The biggest ever British raiding party was in 1996 when a nine-strong British team came up short behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zagreb.

Maidens

The last maiden to win the Irish Derby was Sindon in 1958, trained by Michael Dawson in Ireland and ridden by Liam Ward.

French Challengers

Pardal, third in 1950, was the first French runner in the race. He was owned by Marcel Boussac and ridden by Rae Johnstone. French-trained horses have won the Irish Derby eight times in all including four victories in the last 25 years, namely; Hurricane Run in 2005, his sire Montjeu in 1999, Dream Well in 1998 and Winged Love in 1995. Malacate (1976), Irish Ball (1971), Prince Regent (1969) and Tambourine (1962) were the others.

Record Time

The fastest winning time in the Derby was registered by St Jovite in 1992 when Jim Bolger’s brilliant colt came home in a time of 2 min 25.6 sec, which smashed the previous record of 2 min 28.8 sec set by Tambourine II in 1962.

Smallest/ Largest Fields

The smallest ever field was in 1868 when Madeira defeated his sole rival, Bee Quick, by six lengths. Madeira only ran twice after his Irish Derby win where he was beaten on successive days at Bellewstown!

1962 witnessed the biggest ever turnout for the race as Tambourine II saw off 23 rivals to become the first ever French-trained winner of the race.

2012 and 2014 saw the joint smallest fields since 1912, with just four rivals taking their chances against the Derby heroes Camelot and Australia respectively.

Dead Heats

Only twice has the result of the Irish Derby come down to a dead heat and on both occasions the horses involved have been English-trained raiders. Haine and Zodiac shared the honours in 1924, while 10 years later Patriot King and Primero were inseparable passing the post.

Most Successful Jockey

Morny Wing is the most successful jockey in the Irish Derby, recording six victories between 1921 and 1946. Steve Donoghue and Lester Piggott both won five.

Seamus Heffernan is the most successful current licenced jockey with four wins in the race. Ryan Moore has yet to win the Group 1 classics.

Most Successful Owners

The 2016 victory of Harzand saw the Aga Khan overtake his grandfather His Highness the Aga Khan III as the most successful individual owner in the history of the race with what was his sixth success. The latter had his colours carried to victory five times between 1925 and 1949, while Shergar gave the present Aga Khan his first success in 1981 and was followed by Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988), Sinndar (2000), Alamshar (2003) and the aforementioned Harzand (2016).

Mind, that title could well be disputed as various combinations of the Coolmore partners, namely John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have owned 14 winners of the race in the last 22 years. Indeed, all bar one of the recent winners have all carried the silks of Derrick Smith, which puts him right behind the Aga Khan.

Winning Siblings

The last siblings to win the race were Ribocco in 1967 and his full-brother Ribero in 1968. Both horses were trained in England by Fulke Johnson-Houghton, ridden by Lester Piggott and owned by Charles Engelhard.

Beaten French Derby Runners

Cape Blanco was the last horse to be beaten in the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club) before winning the Irish Derby in 2010. He is not alone in showing improved form here at the Curragh as five years earlier, Hurricane Run finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club before triumphing in the Irish Derby as favourite. In 1995, Winged Love improved from his third place at Chantilly to capture Ireland’s premier Classic.

* N.B The distance of the Prix du Jockey Club was shortened from 12 furlongs to 10½ furlongs in 2005.

Leading Sire

Another jointly held title, the accolade of the most successful sire in the race is held by Gallinule, Sadler’s Wells and the perennial Galileo – three giants of their time. Gallinule produced six winners between 1895 and 1901, while Sadler’s Wells got off the mark with Old Vic in 1989. The following year his daughter Salsabil won before Dream Well in 1998, Montjeu in 1999, Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral in 2002. Sovereign’s 2019 win saw Galileo join Gallinule and Sadler’s Wells as the leading sire of the race with six winners.

Shortest Priced/Longest Priced Winner

In 1907, Orby was the first horse to attempt the English-Irish Derby double and he duly obliged, with his starting price of 1/10 making him the shortest ever priced winner of the Classic. The shortest priced horse in the race since then was Australia at 1/8 in the 2014 renewal.

Zarathustra is the longest-priced winner, prevailing at 50/1 in 1954. Ridden by Paddy Powell and trained by Michael Hurley, he had finished fifth in the Irish 2000 Guineas but had run badly in the Gallinule Stakes on his previous start.

Fillies’ Record

Beaten Epsom Runners In Recent Years

Both Frozen Fire in 2008 and Soldier of Fortune in 2007 finished unplaced at Epsom before triumphing in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Soldier of Fortune was fifth at Epsom while Frozen Fire was only 11th. Last year’s winner Capri finished 6th at Epsom before winning at the Curragh. Previous to that duo, the last horse to win the Irish Derby after having been unplaced at Epsom was Tyrnavos (12th at Epsom) who caused a 25/1 shock on soft ground in 1980.

Others who were placed at Epsom before triumphing at the Curragh recently were last years winner Westover (third at Epsom), Hurricane Lane (third at Epsom), Jack Hobbs (second at Epsom) in 2015, Treasure Beach (second at Epsom) in 2011, Fame and Glory (second at Epsom) in 2009, Dylan Thomas (third at Epsom) in 2006, Alamshar (third at Epsom) in 2003, St Jovite (second at Epsom) in 1992, Sir Harry Lewis (fourth at Epsom) in 1987, Law Society (second at Epsom) in 1985 and the great El Gran Senor (second at Epsom) in 1984.

St Jovite’s win was unusual in that he turned the tables on his Epsom conqueror Dr Devious, finishing two lengths second to him at Epsom prior to inflicting a 12-length defeat on him at the Curragh.

Only 10 fillies’ have won the race since it’s inception and the first of these came in 1871. Maid Of Athens won only the sixth race since it’s inception and the following year Trickstress made it two from two for the fillies. Gallinaria made it winner number eight but the next filly to win didn’t come until 1990 in the form of Salsabil. She was quickly followed by Balanchine in 1994.

LEGENDARY WINNERS

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY

In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-three-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

1970 NIJINSKY

Vincent O’Brien won the Irish Derby on seven occasions during his career and perhaps the most iconic of those victories was that of Nijinsky in 1970. The son of Northern Dancer arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby as the unbeaten winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby and he didn’t disappoint.

Nijinsky would go on to even greater fame in the months after that, completing the fabled Triple Crown by winning the St Leger at Doncaster. To this day, no other horse has completed the Triple Crown.

1981 SHERGAR

Having won the Derby by no less than 10 lengths in 1981, he arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby on a wave of expectation. With Lester Piggott taking over the reins from Walter Swinburn, the son of Great Nephew made no mistake, prevailing by a very easy four lengths. After his racing career finished later that year, Shergar returned to The Curragh to stand as a sire in Ballymany Stud.

Such was the regard he was held in by Irish racing people, he was paraded down the main street in Newbridge in scenes unlikely to ever be repeated.

WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE WINNERS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY INTO ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS RACES IN THE WORLD

1992 ST JOVITE

1990 SALSABIL

Prior to the 1990 renewal of the Irish Derby, 90 years had passed since Gallinaria won the race in 1900.

In 1994 Balanchie beat King’s Theatre to make it two wins in four years after a 90-year drought. Since then, only three other fillies’ have contested the race, Qualify, who like last year’s runner Tuesday, won the Espsom Oaks on her previous start. She finished sixth to Jack Hobbs in 2015. The other was the William Mott trained New York Girl, she finished seventh in 2020. Tuesday was unable to win the race last year and this year we have no fillies’ in the line-up.

There have been few more spectacular winners than St Jovite in 1991. While the son of Pleasant Colony had finished second to Dr Devious in the Derby earlier that month, the rematch at the Curragh was no contest at all, with St Jovite powering away from his rival to score by a remarkable 12 lengths.

It wasn’t just a visually impressive performance either, as he came home in a time of 2 minutes 25.6 seconds, which smashed the previous race record of 2 minutes 28.8 seconds set by Tambourine II in 1962.

It is a record that stands to this day.

2001 GALILEO

Arguably the best of Aidan O’Brien’s twelve winners of the Irish Derby is Galileo, who won by four lengths in 2001. The son of Sadler’s Wells followed his Epsom success with another smooth victory in the hands of Mick Kinane before completing a notable treble when landing the King George at Ascot. He has since become the greatest stallion of his generation, to date siring five winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

Let the Roar Begin

A song for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

The new Irish Derby anthem will be heard for the first time at the races when performed by well known Kildare based tenor Paul Linehan accompanied by the Newbridge Gospel Choir as the horses for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby go to the start of the race. Words and music by Kildare natives Mario Corrigan and Pierce O’Donnell.

Mario is a Senior Executive Librarian with Kildare Co. Council, he has written over 20 books, including children’s books and a graphic novel on Michael Collins for O’Brien Press in 2022. His father Paschal Corrigan, had worked most of his life with John Oxx at Curragbeg, as travelling-head-lad. Pierce O’Donnell, whose mother Teresa had co-written a Eurovision entry, wrote the music. He is a secondary school teacher in Athy, Co. Kildare

There’s Saratoga, Epsom Downs, Newmarket, Ascot too, Flemington & Tokyo, Longchamp, Meydan, it’s true. But I’ll wager you a score or more, there’s no better thing to do, Than being at the Curragh Races, on a Derby afternoon.

CHORUS

Let the roar begin, reach out and punch the sky

Cheer your favourite horse to win, friends there by your side

Feel the pulse within,

We’ll put you through your paces, at the classic Curragh Races, and we’re doin’ it in style

Hooves upon the shortgrass, thunder on the ground, Kicking up the sainted turf, contenders chasing down. Jockeys on the bridle, asses in the air, A thousand pounds of horseflesh, comin’ home upon the rail.

CHORUS

Let the roar begin, reach out and punch the sky

Cheer your favourite horse to win, friends there by your side

Feel the pulse within,

We’ll put you through your paces, at the classic Curragh Races, and we’re doin’ it in style

Let the roar begin, reach out and punch the sky

Cheer your favourite horse to win, friends there by your side

Feel the pulse within,

We’ll put you through your paces, at the classic Curragh Races, and we’re doin’ it in style

We’ll put you through your paces, at the classic Curragh Races

The summer’s come at last and we’re doin’ it in style

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY TROPHY 2023

Kilkenny based artist Ani Mollereau has unveiled the spectacular trophy that will be presented by Colm McLoughlin,

Executive Vice President Dubai Duty Free to the winning owner of the 2023 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

The sculpture depicts a falcon holding a spiral with a horse’s head.

The representation of the falcon and the horse epitomises the characteristics of both species, hugely significant in Arabian culture and renowned for their bravery, pride, nobility, grace and power. These qualities are the epitome of racing. The partnership in racing between Dubai and the Ireland embodies both the love and the passion for the horse. The inter-cultural relationship results in the two halves becoming one.

The wings of the solid bronze trophy symbolises the aim to highly achieve with grace and valor. The ten feather tips on the wings represent the ten fingers of the hands that have helped mould and train the horse to achieve this wonderful victory from birth to track. The breeder, the trainer, the exercise rider, the groom, the jockey and the owner all collaborating to do their very best for the racehorse to cross the finish line first.

The falcon’s head represents the keen eye for success, the attention to detail and preparation. The claws symbolise the strength and resolve to hold firm to your goals and the competitiveness of racing. The tail has 12 feathers which represent the 12 furlong length of the race.

The spiral with the horse’s head symbolises the racecourse and the path to victory. The Curragh, with its natural terrain is represented by the irregularity of the modelling. It is a historical site symbolised by the spiral, an early Celtic symbol.

The Bog Oak base, sourced from well known Kildare based artist Brian O’Loughlin, carries the stories and history of the Curragh Plains.

CURRAGH COMMENT

AUGUSTE RODIN massively improved on his effort in the 2000 Guineas when running down King Of Steel to win the Derby at Epsom last month. The second boosted that form with an impressive win at Royal Ascot recently and it is very hard to oppose this son of Deep Impact. Sprewell (fourth) finished a place behind White Birch (third) on that occasion but may well be able to reverse that form on this more conventional track, while Up And Under is the pick of the remainder.

WIN: AUGUSTE RODIN DANGER: Sprewell

The Irish Derby is headed by English Derby hero Auguste Rodin, aiming to become the first horse since Harzand to complete the English/Irish Derby double. He is without doubt the most likely winner and could be something quite special, but he sets the race up perfectly for exotic bets such as exactas and trifectas. The Coolmore contingent other than the favourite seem to be well held by the front four in the market, and their prices indicate as much. Indeed, Up and Under looks to be well held by Sprewell and White Birch, who have both beaten him in his short career so far. Sprewell is taken to reverse the Derby form with White Birch, and the value bet for the race looks to be the trifecta.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

However, preference is still for CHAZZESMEE, who has won his last two and comfortably went in at Naas in March. The five-year-old continues to improve and could be up to defying his 13lb hike. Last-time-out victor Blues Emperor and No More Porter are just a couple of others to consider in a wide-open contest.

WIN: CHAZZESMEE

DANGER: Blues Emperor

No More Porter does not win a lot of races, but he is incredibly consistent, having been placed in seven out of his nine starts at the Curragh. He has run creditably in three starts for Adrian McGuinness, and if he repeats that form he should be an interesting option for the Swinger, in which bettors need to pick two horses to finish in the top three. Farnborough won a good maiden in taking fashion last time out, but he is likely to be well found in the pools because of his Coolmore connections. He is lightly raced and could well be on a handy mark, but the value is likely to lie elsewhere. Brave Troop won two handicaps at the start of the season, having been well supported in both. He could continue to progress, but most of his best form is on ground softer than this, which is unusual considering he is by Australian sire Pride of Dubai. Chazzesmee has not run many times for various different reasons, but his trainer seems to have found the key to him this season, winning his last two starts. He has risen sharply in the weights, but he should continue to improve and is the second selection for the Swinger.

Bet Type: Swinger

Selections: No More Porter, Chazzesmee

CURRAGH COMMENT

YERWANTHERE finished half a length behind her reopposing stablemate Adelaise in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot recently, but is fancied to reverse the form now dropped to 7f en route to gaining a first success of the season. Lan Cinnte opened her account in a Limerick maiden last month and is feared most on her handicap debut off what looks a fair opening mark. The aforementioned Adelaise can’t be dismissed either and is also likely to pick up a race of this nature at some point.

WIN: YERWANTHERE DANGER: Adelaise

Joseph O’Brien’s Yerwanthere was a well-supported favourite in the Kensington Palace at Ascot, and ran well to finish fifth (beaten less than a length and a half) despite having difficulties in running. Similarly, Adelaise finished one place further forward in the same race for the same trainer, but went off a much bigger price in the pool because she was considered to be the second string. Once again, this is likely to be the case. Of the rest, No Niki No continues to improve and has an excellent strike rate, and Lan Cinnte looks a very interesting runner for Jessie Harrington. She trained the winner of the fillies’ handicap at Ascot, so knows what it will take to beat Joseph O’Brien’s two runners. This filly is unexposed and on the up, and could well find herself in the top three.

Bet Type: Combination Trifecta

Selections: Yerwanthere, Adelaise, Lan Cinnte

CURRAGH COMMENT

TARAWA is bred to be smart, being related to a couple of Pattern-level winners, and she went someway to proving herself when running a career-best in the Irish 1000 Guineas over C&D. The form of that contest has been franked by her stablemate since and the fact she receives plenty of weight in this contest gives her every chance of seeing off Glencairn Stakes runner-up Salt Lake City and the returning Hellsing, who has significant potential as a three-year-old. Cosmic Vega and Didn’thavemuchtodo are entitled to be thereabouts as well.

WIN: TARAWA DANGER: Cosmic Vega

An intriguing Listed contest with a number of unexposed types in the race. Tarawa ran exceptionally to finish fourth behind Tahiyra, beaten just three lengths. She has improved with each start and receives weight all round as she is a three year old filly. She could be hard to pin back. Fernao has a similar profile, finishing third and second on his first two starts before winning his third start by eight lengths. He only made his debut this year at four years old, and there could be plenty more to come. Salt Lake City has some strong form, particularly his second behind Al Riffa last year, but once again, his jockey/trainer combination means that he is likely to be well found in the pool. Hellsing is another interesting, unexposed runner, but his form has not been franked how won would have liked. A tentative selection goes to Lord Massusus, who is in excellent form, having won four of his last five starts. He is likely to overpay in the pool because of his lesser-known jockey/trainer combination, but he certainly knows how to win.

Bet Type: Win

Selection: Lord Massusus

Better known as a smart hurdler these days, he is not without hope back in this disciple and the fitting of cheekpieces adds a touch of intrigue, so a betting is a must.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Safecracker has form that ties in with a good number of the opposition and it would come as no surprise to see him heavily involved again. However, SMOOTH TOM has shown improved form since being tried in a visor and, given he has scope to progress further over this trip, he shades preference. Plenty of others also need to be taken seriously, not least Hell Bent, Timourid and Laelaps. Brazil is also of interest back in a race like this with headgear now applied.

WIN: SMOOTH TOM

DANGER: Hell Bent

There are several here that have been running over obstacles, so it is not an easy race to assess. My Mate Mozzie is a very talented hurdler, who has won at Group 3 level, however, he has never won on the flat and is likely to find one or two too good here. Chally Chute is one from one here at the Curragh and is on a steep upgrade. He won three from three towards the back end of last year, and his reappearance was pleasing. His connections are unlikely to appeal to international punters and should overpay in the pool. Zoffman is an intriguing runner, who was shown to best effect last season at this trip, having finished his season running over further. He should go well for Noel Meade. Brazil is perhaps the most intriguing runner in the race. This Cheltenham Festival winner is very well treated based on his hurdles form, and Seamie Heffernan should have a good chance of steering him to victory in the final race of the day.

Bet Type: Swinger

Selections: Brazil, Chally Chute

RAGUSA

Foaled in 1960, Ragusa was a top class thoroughbred, who raced between 1962 - 1964.

Bred by Harry Frank Guggenheim, Ragusa was not the biggest of foals and was sold at the Ballsbridge Sales in 1961. He was picked up for what proved to be a bargain of 3,800 Guineas by Paddy Prendergast, on the behalf of James R. & Meg Mullion. His first appearance came at the Curragh, where he won the Suir Maiden Plate over seven furlongs as a juvenile.

As a three-year-old he finished third in the Epsom Derby before returning to the Curragh to win the Irish Derby. Success kept on coming with a win in the King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and then in the Great Voltigeur. He rounded off his classic campaign with a win in Britain’s final classic, St. Leger at Doncaster. Ragusa returned to the track as a four-year-old to take the Eclipse and retired a true great for Paddy Prendergast and James R. & Meg Mullion.
